    Hey,

The VBios file says: 1W0V_N17E-G2_86.04.5B.00.44_ GSYNC.rom
I think this new VBios turns GSync on, its for MSI GT72VR 7RE models, i already have GSync activated but ive upgraded the VBios anyway, if its there its for a reason.

By the way, whats your 3DMark Fire Strike score?

    Cheers.

Hey guys - I just quickly went through every page of this thread looking for temps and didn't see very many. I am about to return my p670hs-g - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MS7NTNZ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - because its running temps in the upper 90s within 10min of playing battlefield 1 and overwatch. I am considering the MSI GT72VR Dominator Pro-257 with the 6700hq because I think the new processor is causing a lot of heat issues. What kind of temps are you guys getting with this comp or anything similar even the 1060 or the 7700hq?

P.S. also please let me know if there are any issues I should know about; I would greatly appreciate the info.

The banding issue is well known, and has been discussed at length ad nausium.

Most people agree that it is not visible unless you are closer to the screen than normal viewing distance.

Unfortunately, it is the screen, not MSI. This same screen is used by many brands, and because it is the screen, not the notebook manufacturer, it is there on all of them if you look hard enough for it.

Starting a 'posting' campaign will unfortunately be of little use.

First of all , yes its visble big time and its really ugly its something that you cant unsee ,
Secondly i bought from MSI ,, they set up their price and i pay for it, and what that about its not their fault ? Yes its , if they care they wouldnt sell it or get a better display from a better company or at least find a fix .
And lastly yes it will help , are you telling me that they dont care about their reputaion ? Well people do care when they hear about the MSI support they are not going to be their customers ..
once agian , all we asked for is to make the overclocking sulotion to work agian ..
When i posted about the problem they didnt respond they just deleted my previos post and some other guys as well and thats just saying from their side that they dont care at all and they are not going to waste their time to fix it

One person who updated to it said he was having trouble booting and wanted to go back to older bios, but he should have dumped the old one with gpu-z first....

Besides, isn't Bios 86.04.5B.00.8A linked from the chinese forum better anyway? And I'm guessing newer since 8Ah is larger than 44h...Everyone who used it was happy. I updated my GT72VR-7RE with this and no problems. I downloaded the .44 one before MSI took it down but I'm not flashing a broken beta bios...

    Hey guys!

Im thinking about buying the MSI GT72VR 7RE laptop but I am put off by one thing. I really hate polished black plastic. On the pictures it looks like the hinges and outer screen bezels is made of polished black plastic, is it indeed this bad?

Hi, I played Star Wars Battlefront (2015) on ultra settings at 2560x1440. My room is about 72 degrees f ahrenheit. Dragon center reports 68 degrees celsius for cpu, 72 degrees celsius for gpu, sport mode/auto fan in dragon center, played around 15 minutes in walker assault multiplayer. I have the 6700hq and gtx 1060, no issues encountered with heat as far as i know.

    Hey guys,

No OC, everything is set to default, cpu/gpu default clocks, default fan speed,

Just had 2nd reboot, while playing this game Bulltetstorm Remaster,

    Event log says this:

"Speed of processor 0 in group is being limited by system firmware"
"Speed of processor 5 in group is being limited by system firmware"
"Speed of processor 4 in group is being limited by system firmware"
    etc

    How to fix this?

    Hello,

    Bios is set to default,

Every single driver, bios, vbios, ec firmware, is updated, im using the last Windows 10 version as well.

This is not related to the kernel process power error, this error, among other errors, only happens after the reboot.

I think this is not software related but an hardware issue.

The reboot only happened, while playing Bulletstorm Remaster, limited at 90fps by the way, and 3D Mark Ice Storm.

Sometimes i can finish the Ice Storm bench without any problems, but today it was different, two reboots in the middle of the bench.

    Important facts:

    - No blue screen, no memory dump (windows options is set to create memory dump)
    - Eventlog shows no errors before the reboot
    - If i change in the windows options to no reboot if windows crash, the screen freezes and stays there
    - Reboot Bulletstorm Remaster, 90fps limited - the game is not by any means demanding - , played 4 different games and a lot more demanding: no reboot
    - It only reboots on Ice Storm bench, the less demanding benchmark of 3D Mark
    - Lastest drivers/vbios/bios/firmware, Windows 10 last version, nothing running on background, no virus/malware
    - Everything is default, cpu/gpu clocks, fans default, bios everything default

    Reboot error, Eventlog:

    Evento: Critico , Origem: Kernel-Power, ID 41 Tarefa 63

    Event: Critical , Source: Kernel-Power, ID 41 Job 63

"O sistema foi reiniciado sem primeiro ter sido encerrado de forma correta. Este erro pode ter ocorrido porque o sistema parou de responder, sofreu uma falha ou ficou sem energia inesperadamente."

"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could occured because the system stopped responding or lost power all of the sudden."

    Google: "Ice Storm reboot":

"Spontaneous reboot (not bluescreen) is pretty much 99% surely a power supply issue.

It should be noted that Ice Storm is exceedingly harsh on the power usage of many GPUs - the framerate climbs to be so massive on modern GPUs that the GPU power draw can exceed what you'd see in games. A fully working system can happily take it, but I've also seen systems that are stable for everything else and do spontaneous shutdown on Ice Storm. And in every case trying with a better PSU gets around the issue.

So I guess the PSU in your case is kinda on the borderline - probably fine for most uses, but in extreme cases it can't quite handle the load."

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Feniks, explain how a software issue would cause a 'kernel-power' in the event log and no BSOD and no minidump. How does software bypass the operating system and force the motherboard to issue a hard shutdown to the power supply?

I just can not see how it could be a software issue. I think it must be an issue with household electrical system providing dirty power, or failing PSU, or issue with GPU voltage regulators running high FPS at low load, or issue with high CPU load and low GPU load causing a power supply cross loading issue, or something. It just has to be a hardware issue. If I were the one with the problem, I would definitely try a different PSU.

I dont know what to say, this is really strange.

    Hi dancsank,

I think all the gt72vr variants have a combo slot according to this chart. If you get the right nvme ssd, shouldn't be any problem to replace the m2 drive already there.

    https://www.msi.com/asset/global/picture/faq/10011971@2017-0206-0212-051284@faq_01117_en.pdf

For gsync, im not sure but i dont think the model you are interested in has gsync, but i could be wrong.

I guess theres only 1 ssd slot then but if the preinstalled os is on the m.2 ssd, how can I get the os on a new nvme ssd. Will I get a windows cd?

You can fit a regular ssd into hdd/ssd slot as well. I don't believe you get a windows cd with the laptop. I forgot if there is a way to transfer os to a new drive utlizing an msi tool/software. For me, if i was installing a new drive, I would clean install the os, which you can download iso or to a flash drive from microsoft site, and either get a new key or its possible to use a win 7 or win 8 key to do the activation for win 10 i think.

I believe you can get full performance when using only battery, its just that if you set everything to high performance, battery will drain faster, have to turn off battery boost in geforce experience if you have it, also set the appropriate power plan and check dragon center too to make sure the performance options are set when on battery.

Ok, i will test with battery only.

But, i dont think its the psu, i already tried to run 3dmark stress test and more demading games and benchmarks like firestrike and no problem at all.

Ive already contacted msi to send the laptop to warranty, im already tired of testing so many things to search for the reason of this problem.

Turned off battery boost, set everything to high performance/100% on windows options.

I loose like 60% of performance running from battery only, fire strike runs at 10/15fps, while i get 60/80 using psu.

    Thanks for the advice anyway.

Got this computer yesterday. Very impressed with the cooling capabilities. Played battlefield 1 and temps were hitting mid 80s after 30min of play but then when I turned the fans on max, which are surprisingly quiet, the temps drops below 70! Can I keep the fans running at max for hours or is this something I shouldn't be doing?

Whats interesting between this comp vs the p670hs is that their pros and cons are the exact opposite. The gt72vr has great cooling and sound but bad screen and keyboard, while the p670hs has bad cooling and sound but a great screen and keyboard.

I can live with the keyboard and possibly the size (this thing is so thick it won't fit in my 17" laptop bag which is a huge bummer) but I don't know about the screen. The colors look much more muted than on the p670hs. Can the screen be altered or replaced easily?

    Hi guys
I am thinking to get GT72VR 7RE Dragon edition with 128GB SSD and stock configuration. Hopefully it is with 120Hz G-sync screen.
While reading about it in the forum I see few issues in this:
    • Does it have a bad screen. Is it something I will regret after buying it?
    • Is it true that hinges quality is bad and feels like it will break?
    • I am buying from ExcaliburPc from Amazon. Are they reliable, since I will be getting a stock configuration so they should not have a reason to open the box.
Is there anything else that I should be aware about?

It's hard to make that new laptop decision. Just made mine, and in the build wait process. went with Donald S at HIDevolution !

I also just ordered the GT72VR 6RE. It's a version with the i7-6820HK so I am looking forward to it a lot as it's overclockable right out of the box. Also comes with 500 GB SSD and 1 TB of HDD. Should arrive Thursday, most likely I will let you guys know how quality seems here in the Netherlands. For 2200 euro it better be high.

Is there a setting for running fans at max in dragon center?

Hi dont know about replacement of screen, but do you have the msi true color software installed, that might help in your situation.

Hi, don't know about the 120hz gsync screen, but the regular screen some people have issues with colors, backlight bleeding when screen is almost completely black, and color banding. For me though, i'm not having any issues, but that's just me.

I did not notice anything with the hinges, feel fine in my opinion.

ExcaliburPC, never ordered from them, but i know of their site for years now, seems ok from looking at their site/policies.

There are more complaints on the 4K screen than the Gsync, but after all it is personal preference.

The GT72VR has G-Sync and much better cooling, the GE72MVR has optimus. I'd still get the GT series!

I would take the GT72VR 6RE as I have it right now again any day as it has the i7-6820HK overclockable CPU, 512GB SSD and 1070 GTX. My other choice was a 7RD for 200 euro less, but it came with gtx 1060, 256 GB SSD and i7-7700HQ.... was a clear choice. Could not test my laptop that well yet cause I made the unfortunate decision to reinstall windows 10 which set me up for hours of drivers drama after receiving it today.... But it does not have color banding or screen bleeding and wifi appears to work on b/g mode (our ancient router does not support "n" stably and that also took me couple hours to figure out!)

    Does gt72vr 7re dominator pro dragon edition 638 have G-sync, also does gt72vr 7re 450 have it?
Is it worth extra $100, I just saw in photos and looks good to me

All of the 6th and 7th Gen MSI GT models support G-Sync. You just have to enable it in the BIOS.

The ge72mvr doesn't have g-sync? Where do you see that? And if it doesn't, wouldn't Optimus be better for battery life and can the gpu be switched to discrete?

In terms of the screen, I called MSI. They say the gt72vr screen can come from 2 different companies which they can't tell even from the SN. My screen problems are that the colors look really muted and less sharp than my previous p670hs, and when I'm watching cartoons in particular, certain solid colors will allow me to see rows of lcd blocks (best way I can describe it). I really like everything bout this computer but the screen and size. Just deciding whether I can deal with it or not.

All the MSi GE series laptops come with Optimus. It's impossible for Optimus and G-Sync to coexist, since G-Sync requires the panel to be fully wired to the dGPU, and all Optimus laptops have the display wired to the iGPU (with the software switch called Optimus, causing stutters and issues).
Optimus? Battery life? All MSi laptops tend to have a horrible battery anyway, so why bother with battery life if Optimus gives less than 45 minutes extra? I'd rather go 100% dGPU with a seamless performance and the possibility to use G-Sync, than 45 more minutes of battery, coupled with endless issues wih Optimus.

P.S, No, you can't manually switch to dGPU, it's software sided and is only done when the algorithm deems or necessary. Expect to see graphics switching at unwanted times, causing freezes and FPS drops.

The Titan series laptops do NOT have Optimus (as they do have Gsync), BUT they do have a MUX switch to switch between the integrated GPU and the dedicated GPU, but this requires a reboot. The alienware laptops have a similar switch. The GT72VR is permanently hardwired to the dGPU. This is not the same as optimus, because there is no direct access to the other GPU. However HWinfo can see that two GPU's exist.
Using the iGPU is good for about 2 more hours of battery life if you aren't running a 3D game on it.

The only issue is that GPU-Z cannot dump the Bios on MUX switch laptops, while it can on the GT72VR (this might just be an MSI issue; no idea for Alienware. You can flash with nvflash just fine, no idea if nvflash can create a backup or not).

Thanks for the info. On the p670hs - I could switch between hybrid and discrete so wasn't sure about all this. Anyway I just went to bestbuy and compared the ge72 with asus and hp screens and they all have the rows of slight pixel discoloration like I mentioned earlier showing up with certain solid colors. I guess that isn't just something going on with the gt72vr. Looking more and more like I'll be keeping this comp and shutting up soon.

    Problem:

    News:

Sent the gt72vr 7re to msi, they installed BIOS 86.04.5B.00.82 and limits 1070 clock to 1443mhz.

Msi told me they are working with nvidia to resolve this issue, but it seems is taking a lot of time and the 6RE version of this laptop, from August 2016, suffers from this.

This needs to be in the official FAQ laptop page, for warning people that are interested in buying a msi laptop with 1070 gtx.

    - Bios version installed by MSI, 86.04.5B.00.82, DEBUG vBIOS, clocks 1443/3606
    - Dragon Gaming Center / Turbo mode does not work
    - Loss of 5/10 fps on games and benchmarks
    - Loss of 600mhz, before it could reach 1900mhz while playing games
    - Affects other MSI models with 1070, GT73VR, GT62VR, GT72VR
    - The GT72VR 6RE, laptop from August 2016, has this issue, so its been months and no official fix

    @Milardo @ekkolp

Question for msi owners with 1070gtx laptop:

Is there any MSI Laptop with 1070 GTX card, that works 100% with the original vbios? And goes above 1650mhz on boost mode?

Or, all msi laptops with 1070 GTX are limited at 1443-1650mhz from now on?

Is your 1070 gpu working good? whats your default clocks and vbios?

    Let me know,

    Thank you.

I sent my laptop to MSI too this monday, still wondering how it'll come back, should take another 2 weeks or so. It had a crash in an older game with pink stripes over the screen and then proceeded onto desktop, no nvidia driver error though. HWinfo reported boost clocks on the gtx1070 that spiked over 2000, which aint right imo. Did not want to return the laptop (was 1 day old when I found out) as I would never get another one with same specs for this price. Did not have any probs with dragon age inquisition though, same clock speeds (slightly above 1600 constant, above 1800 boost and hwinfo still noticed the weird over 2000 spike, but no crashes in cca 1 hour that I was testing it). It did run pretty warm considering cooler booster was on (over 70 degrees). Will see, MSI promised that if they can't make it run right they will offer me another model without having to pay up. It had some more minor issues, mostly driver related which I requested to be looked at and dealt with as I tried everything.
