Hi Hugodra,
I have the gtx 1060 model.
-
No crash/reboot problem with your 1060?
-
I play a lot of Star Wars Battlefront (2015), no major issues with crashing or reboots. I also play Drift City, don't think there was an issue with crashing or reboots either. I just started playing drift city again, need to test more when i get the time. Drift City is probably a lot easier game for the 1060 to handle, run at 1080p max settings, and star wars battlefront i have dsr on-2560x1440p, and ultra settings-more gpu usage etc.Hugodra likes this.

You need to play games that doesnt not get the 1060 hot, like 60 C while playing - a low level stress game
Examples:
Bulletstorm Remaster, Left 4 Dead 2, Project Cars, The Last Remnant, Wolfenstein New Order, Doom, etc
Benchmark: 3DMark Ice Storm -
i think drift city is a low level stress game, how about wolfenstein enemy territory i can try that.

Yes it is, both Drift City and Wolfenstein is enough to make sure your laptop is working 100% good.
Play them for a few hours and give feedback. -
What does this mean in layman's terms? Is my gpu under-performing? Or will it cause crashing? I play Heroes of The Storm a lot and get occasional crashes. I have the 6700hq 1070 gt72vrHugodra likes this.

Hey guys! I just about to buy MSI GT72VR 7RE in the near future. What do you guys think about its screen quality? Should I buy no dead pixel warranty for it or not? Anyone has a dead pixel issues on your screen?
Thanks. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
The screen on this model is 17.3" 1920x1080 TN @120Hz 5ms, 94% NTSC, G-Sync.
Chi Mei/Innolux N173HHE-G32 (CMN1747) -
How is the screen hold up? Is it has a good quality or many defective items? Should I bought the no dead pixel guarantee for this screen or mostly the laptop will come with no problem like dead pixel etc?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
The Chi Mei/Innolux N173HHE-G32 is the sweetest 120Hz~5ms Full HD (1920x1080) screen available today. However as I told you today, defective pixels can happen even with the best quality screens...so why risk getting up to 3 stuck / permanently lit sub-pixels for want of spending $35 to insure getting a perfect panel? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's good, and here's more details on the screen as far as review goes.

I bought the MSI GT72VR 6RE. The 120 Hz TN screen is great, mine has no issues in that department at all. No dead pixels, no backlight bleeding, nothing. But if you can get the dead pixel warranty for cheap, definitely do so. Sadly my MSI has other issues, mostly software for which I threw it at MSI to deal with in warranty when it was barely 1 or 2 days old, still waiting for it to return (no one should have to spend hours googling and fixing problem after problem to still not having it 100% for this price). In the end I do prefer IPS over TN screens for the nicer whites and more vivid colors, but tbh unless they are side by side you won't even notice unless you try to view the screen under an angle.
-
Thank you
What means is that you need a "beta" vbios or some chinese vbios to fix the crashes, because MSI didnt release any official vbios to fix this crashes.
yes both vbios limits your gpu power, but you can overclock it with a 3rd party program like MSI afterburner to have the same level of performance as before.

Just finished a 3 hour + game of drift city, cant really test wolfenstein enemy territory because there's no good server to play on.. Part of the time the game was just running but i wasnt actually playing it. For the rest, I was actively playing although not much change in the dragon center monitor. Attached is a screenshot of dragon center monitoring, i experienced no errors or crashing/reset. Temp in my room is about 73 degrees farenheit. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the feedback
Tell me your laptop serial number -
Just a question, what do you need my laptop serial number for?

Just tell me the first digits if you are afraid, like "K1609N" for example.
It seems that 2016 builds are defective and K1701N, etc are working good. -
Thanks,
Build 2016 and no problem, but your laptop is 1060 gtx, there are a lot more people with problems on 1070 gtx -
What kind of problems does the 1070`s GT72VR have?
I got a 257 model, serial k1609, sometimes I have some weird boot delays, even total blackout for a while, this has happened
3-4 times in the 6+ months I have owned.
Also, fans are a bit noisy at medium - high load.
I even had a weirdo incident trying to install a second hdd: got a 17822 card and place in the M.2 slot, with the M.2 ssd and a 7 pin slot adapter loaded on... just when I turned on it came a dusty smoke from the keyboard along a deep burnt smell... no need to say how scared I was... try to turn again and nothing happened... fortunately, after removing the 17822 and pressing the turn on button couple times, it came to life again, checked everything and it was, apparently, good...
That was a week ago, it is still working, but started to have weird gamma changes when a game starts.
Idk if I should I send it back to MSI -
That sounds super scary, you must've thought for a second there it would catch on fire haha. Anyway, before sending it off to MSI make sure your bios/vbios/ec firmware and possibly other drivers are up to date. If your booting up problem persists, I recommend recording it for evidence if it only happens randomly (yeah setting up camera every time you boot up sucks but it's in case MSI cannot replicate it). Does this delay happen before or after MSI logo? Can you access bios/f3 menu when this happens? Do you see any errors in event viewer after it starts up? I am not a tech person but with this info others could maybe advise you better.
-
It happens before MSI logo post, no access to anything, only way to go back is kepping pressed the ON button. Some very weird times it post to a pink pixelated image then goes right to Windows logon screen.
-

If you are comfortable doing this, can you try disconnecting all drives and see what happens? -
I did, disconnecting all drives led to a succesfully post to MSI logo and BIOS access... I returned the 17822 adapter and I'm awaiting for a 17812 that, hopefully, will get the job done.
The issue that continues to bewilder me is the smoke and smell of burning that I witnessed and of which I have no idea if it caused any damage, even though everything seems to be normal now. -
Falkentyne Notebook Prophet
Which models came with this adapter installed in the first place?
How do you know that the 17822 was wrong and the 17812 is correct?
Where or how exactly did you find information on this? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Something is damaged as a result of burning of internal wiring and it's usually not visible by bare eyes. You have no choice but to contact MSI to request for a RMA service. -
Well, I tried the 17822 myself and didn't work.
I think next week I may be able to confirm if 17812 is the one to go.
You have no idea how much I bother with that idea, I live in FL and it's like 10 days back and forth to California, and that's only the shipping without the actual fixing time by MSI. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yeah I know but the wire is broken so you gotta send it in to MSI service center. -
I think I will end doing that, now I question myself if I made the right call going MSI, I would have chosen an Asus G752, but I wasn't sure it had such a stunning screen as the MSI got.Last edited: May 26, 2017

Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Using incorrect adapter can cause damages due to incorrect mapping of wiring so gotta be more careful. FYI, Asus G752's display is 17.3" 1920X1080 IPS LED @75Hz, Anti-Glare G-Sync and it's great for gaming with good contrast on visual. -
That depends on what you call stunning. Here the only screens for gt72vr are TN screens which I find less pretty than the IPS ones such as the asus has. Tbh, I don't see the dif between 120 and 75 Hz for it to be worth the worse viewing angles and colors.

@Milardo

GT72VR has IPS
-
MSI GT72VR 6rd gtx1060 just got Bios update i believe its a fix for the color banding issue
-
You are right, some of the models do. Mine is GT72VR 6RE-266NL and has the Chi Mei 120Hz 5ms TN panel. Still a more than sufficient screen, but when I put my LG G2 with full HD IPS screen next to it, it looks like a joke, with whites being pinkish. Somewhat better than my old laptop's asus k55vj TN screen (also Chi Mei) that looks obviously pink next to it with blacks looking pretty much grey though and dull colors. Checked with HWInfo.
-
You may want to calibrate the colors with Color Management, I found it very useful.
-
Can confirm that the latest BIOS fixed the color banding on the 75 Hz screen model. I always ran it at 100 Hz, but some games still get color banding in fullscreen mode so it's really nice to get a fix.

That is true it fixed it , there is no more need to change the refresh rate to 100 hzKevin@GenTechPC likes this.

17812 v1.0 won't fit in the laptop's slot.
Don't know what else to do in order to be able to expand to another HDD
-
I have the GT72VR 6RE and the color banding is absurd. I have the 75hz G-Sync panel if it makes a difference. If I update the Vbios, do I also need to do the system bios? Last 2 times I tried to update older MSI laptops I bricked both upgrading system bios so Im a tad gun shy.
-
Hi, don't know if this helps, but somewhere in this thread somebody mentioned about replacing the optical drive with a caddy for another hdd, maybe you could try that? Unless it doesn't fit or you rather keep the optical drive.
-
I updated the bios and vbios on my GT72vr successfully (I am a girl, so you gotta handle that stuff). I recommend to PRECISELY to the word follow MSI guides (posted along with downloads on their website or somewhere there). I had it opened on my other laptop/phone and just took my time understanding what they required me to do...If something goes wrong, at least you have something to blame (you can also make a video on your phone of the progress for eventual proof). Users above do mention the bios though, not vbios for fixing the color banding, so you will most likely have to go through with it. Or just overclock your screen like others did if you are too scared.
-
Hi, I'd recommend updating the system bios first then ec firmware, and then vbios. It states at least for my model something like you need a certain bios for gsync, and i guess that means also that if you update vbios, you need to update system bios as well. Looks like you need to update system bios to get rid of the color banding which is fixed i believed in latest bios.
Updating bios isn't too hard, just have to follow instructions carefully, let me know if you need help with that.WilliamSmallwood likes this. -
Ive follwed the directions in the past 2 times and bricked them both. Ill strap on my big boy pants and go for 3. I already have g-sync, I was trying to avoid the system bios. Ive had this laptop a year and have no clue how to over clock the display. I might look into that, I hate dealing with MSI. I have proof of purchase on EBay and still can't even register as I bought it used.
Ill try it tomorrow I'm the AM, unless someone jabs me into an early attempt.
Thank you all.

So far so good, bios went well and it restarted into Windows. Tomorrow ill take on the Vbios and see if it looks like it should. Thats my only gripe with this PC. 6th gen i7, 1070 gtx, m2 hdr, 64 gig of ram, and a crap screen

What do you mean by EC firmware then vbios?
