Sucked it up and updated the bios, ec, and v-bios. Banding is still present. I overclocked to no avail as well. Oh well, I tried and did succeed but just leaning more and more that this was a 2500 piece of crap.

Is there a way to install a better panel?

Dont know much about instaling a better screen, did you use the latest bios for your model, could you link to that page for it?

Try opening the Nvidia Control Panel, change resolution, select your resolution and look at Output Color Depth. See if you can change it to 6 bpc. My screen does the banding when it's set to 8 bpc.

Yup here is where i got the files from, followed and confirmed version after install.
    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-6RE-Dominator-Pro.html#down-bios

Mine only has 6 bpc as an option in the drop down. No 8 bit.

I will admit its better, but for a 75hz, gsync screen maybe Im expecting too much compared to an 8 year old 1080p external dvi monitor, which has no trace of banding what so ever?

As well is there a better power brick. The one I have gets too hot to hold when running 4k content and games. I know this thing sucks down some power but man thats a ton of draw. Does MSI make a higher output power supply to keep the one it comes with from catching fire?

I hadn't noticed anything unusual about the psu, although i have gtx 1060 powered laptop, mine is 230 watt chicony technology, do you have the same one? By the way, is your screen 4k?

Nope 1080p 75hz display. I use my tv for to. Ill have to look at my psu to see which one it is. Its impossible to hold after an hour or more of gaming or video editing.

Hmm, anyone else here not able to change the refresh rate to 100 Hz anymore?

EDIT: Nevermind, it was a program reverting it to 75 Hz.

    Hi,

I have GT72VR-6RD and I have problem with wireless card now and then.
Sometimes when I turn laptop on I have no connection to the Internet, it's like wireless card is disabled.
    Check included screenshot.
In order to fix this, I have to TURN OFF laptop. Simply restart doesn't work.
    http://imgur.com/a/4KCOF

    Wireless card is Killer 1435.

Can someone tell me if they experienced same problem, and what drivers are you using?
    Thanks!

I use the Killer Control Center (For connection priorities) with drivers in this page and haven't had a problem:
    http://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/killer-control-center-x64

If you don't have a use for that, get this instead: (It's just the drivers without any extra software)

I actually use that one (driver only).
    Well, that's weird.
Even found some "solution" online when I googled "device descriptor request failed" which involved making a key in registry, but it didn't quite worked.

And it happens quite a lot, I would say every 4th times I turn on the laptop. And it just started like a 2 months back, so maybe it's connected to windows 10 updates or something.

Hi, I have noticed that since i updated to win 10 creators update , i have had a bit of trouble connecting by wireless where i takes a bit of time to connect to the internet. It will connect to my router but it says no internet access for awhile like 5 minutes? I don't know the driver I am using as currently i am working on desktop pc. I use the killer control center as well.

I've had the GT72-6RD for about 2 months now. I can say that there's something with the LCD Panel that they've used. There is backlight bleed on my panel but it is minimal, but the colour banding is terrible. It's a 60Hz panel with the ability for G-sync to push it to 75Hz and then, of course, the option to OC the refresh rate via. custom resolution - hence how it's possible to get it to 100hz.

On my system, the Geforce Control Panel doesn't have an option to set the Output Color Depth to 6bpc, the only option in the drop-down is 8bpc. This fact drives me nuts because I would have no issue at all with the system if it were possible to get rid of the banding.

The only option I have now is to go through a lengthy RMA process with the retailer I purchased the unit from and, with any luck, MSI will give me a credit for the amount I paid so that I can get a different model. I've heard the GT73 doesn't have this banding issue.

Edit: Just saw the post about the VBios flash on the MSI website and there is a recent one for my model. I'll have to give that a try before I do anything else. Will post later - probably sometime tomorrow - regarding results.

Yes I have backlight bleeding too. Unfortunately, that's very common on MSI's laptops as far as I saw.
I don't have mentioned color banding.
About refresh rate, I had it on 100Hz, overclocked it via Nvidia drivers but from like 2 months ago as Nvidia pushed newer drivers it seems I can't overclock it to more than 75Hz.
Screen turns black and I can't get it back..I have to shut down laptop with power button. Even 76Hz doesn't work anymore. 75 is max.
I don't know why. Got used to 100Hz and now I have to use 75 lol.
Default refresh rate is sadly 60.

    EDIT:
So now I tried to overclock it again and it worked. I guess in the meantime, with new drivers, they fixed that issue.
Well, glad to be again on 100Hz.
Screen is darker tho. Guess that's the side effect of overclocking the refresh rate.

And the final verdict is thus:

After flashing the bios (uefi) the issue has been resolved. What the flash did was change it so that instead of the option for only Output Color Depth at 8bps the system now gives only the option for 6bps which, as has been noted previously, is the solution to the colour banding issue.

    Huzzah!

    I have a problem.
My laptop since this morning has a black vertical centered line in the display:

It doesn't appear with an external display so, looks like the primary display is not working well. So I'm afraid I'll have to start a RMA...

This is either circuit board issue on the LED panel, or the ribbon cable. And RMA is the right way to go.

Just a note if someone else has the same issues.
It seems turning off "fast startup" helped with this issue as from then on I don't have it anymore.

    Cool.

By the way, new bios up for my model

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html

    Version
    E1785IMS.117

    Release Date
    2017-07-25

    Feature:

    Update CPU microcode.

Also interesting feature from nvidia with latest drivers and gfe 3.8.1.89 beta - "whisper mode"

    Going to try it out.

It's kind of like a frame rate limiter

Also, it has to be turned on in gfe and set on as welll in nvidia control panel and configured for each game/application as well. So far for each game/application, you can adjust frame rate. I think it also mentioned that games need to be optimized from gfe as well, but im not sure.

As far as fan noise, haven't tested enough games yet.

Interesting, I believe the microcode update is for the Skylake and Kaby Lake hyper-threading microcode bug.

    Guys, another problem.
After buying my 2nd GT72VR three weeks ago, yesterday was playing Diablo III for a while. Then stopped playing and back to windows, suddenly the display appeared full blank-white.
Tried to uninstall graphics drivers with DDU, tried to reinstall windows. No way, even I am not able to go BIOS in the main display. Only a secondary display works, so this issue should be directly related to the main display of the laptop.

Im 100% sure that my next laptop won't be a GT72Vr...

Hi, my first language is spanish so I will try to explain myself in english the best I can.

I bought a second-hand MSI GT72VR 7RE Dominator Pro on Amazon. It said in the description that the laptop had aesthetic problems. The price of this laptop in Spain is about 1700 € and I have paid about 1500 €. I didn't care about aesthetic problems as long as they weren't too big, and in the description didn't say they were big. As Amazon has a 30 day return policy, I decided to give it a try.
When the laptop arrived past friday it was like new, no aesthetic problems at all. If it wasn't for the open box and the wharehousedeals-refurbished sticker I would have think it was new. The warranty sticker at the bottom was missing too, so I think the real problem of this laptop wasn't aesthetic, was hardware and that is the reason for the 200€ discount. This worries me much more.

It came with FreeDOS, so I installed Windows 10 (I enabled UEFI and convert the SSD to GPT before) and downloaded all drivers and utilities from MSI website. I even downloaded updated drivers from Intel, Realtek, Nahimic, etc... websites. The first day I get two Blue Screen of Death. The error code was BAD POOL CALLER. Then, after playing a game called PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for about 2 hours, the screen freezes, turns white and the laptop reboots. The temperatures were fine, I even had the cooler boost activated. It was only once but I haven't play enough time since then to see if it happen again. I reinstalled Windows, but this time I only installed drivers from MSI website but the BSoD persist. I think I figured it out, but I'm not sure. I deinstalled Dragon Center and it seems to be ok now, but it need more test.

The other thing that bothers me is the screen. It has blacklight bleeding in the bottom. It shows when the screen is black or with a dark color, but it bothers me. But what really worries me is that the monitor is really hot on that bottom area. The plastic, where the letters MSI are, is really hot, the heat even spread a little towards the panel. The monitor in my previous laptop, an MSI too, wasn't never hot, not even my 24'' desktop monitor.

I'm seriously thinking about returning it. Is that heat normal?. Is the blacklight bleeding a common problem in this laptops?. And what do you think about the BSoD and the freeze, white screen and reboot?.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Can you post a screenshot of GPU-Z? You must have the first revision of the GTX1070, wich gives some problems like blue/black screens, flickers and reboots.

I've returned two GT72VR with the A1 revision of the card...

Sorry to hear. I have not owned mine as long as yours but for the most part its been ok. I also have a gt72vr with a 1060 here and its ok so far.

Are you getting rid of yours? Nvidia and MSI should do something about this issue. I'm not sure why Nvidia has not owned up to this yet.

I just undervolted my CPU by -175 mV even though this thing's cooling isn't lacking... Results are very very good, 55 C maximum under gaming load. 62 C max under OCCT for 20 mins.

The fans don't even go past 1700 RPM.

It was my 2nd GT72VR, the first one died in 11 months. Second one, 3 weeks. I sent it to my reseller (I live in Spain). and they refound me the money.
What worries me, its that I already had issues with both GT72VR 6RE and 7RE, that's why I'm not choosing another MSI for a long while...
Its sad, because I loved the GT72VR while it worked fine. And 1700€ for it was a very good price IMO.

Hello checking in with a freshly purchased GT72VR dominator-238. I also ordered a samsung 960evo 500GB SSD to throw in. Any suggestions or tips for first things to do when she comes out of the box? Pretty new to gaming laptops.

I was able to pick it up for 1200 on Amazon, it was hard to beat for a 17 inch laptop with a 1060.

    Hi, cupasoup11m,

I suggest installing a new copy of windows 10 x64 and update the bios, ec firmware, and vbios, install the drivers, and utilities as well. If i remember correctly, there was unwanted software that gets installed even if you just reset everything to factory settings.

    Sure, here's some links.

    Operating system:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If your not sure how to proceed after getting either an iso copy or flash drive copy of windows 10 installation media, let me know.

Main page for downloads, bios, ec firmware, vbios, drivers, utilities, for the video card, I would install the one from nvidia site:

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html

    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx

For the bios, i believe there are instructions in a pdf file included with the bios.

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html#down-bios

    ec firmware:

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html#down-firmware

    https://www.msi.com/files/pdf/EC_Firmware_Update_SOP_for_Windows_EN.pdf

    vbios:

    https://us.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-Dominator-6th-Gen-GTX-1060.html#down-firmware

    http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/VBIOS_flash_sop_for_Skylake.pdf

Unless noted, you can install in that order i believe.

    Drivers:

Holy crap! Thank you so much. I wouldn't have done or even thought of 1/4th of this. I'll be dropping in a SSD as well. Where would that fit on this list? I'd like to move the OS and everything to the SSD, so I imagine I should install the SSD before this? I appreciate your patience.

Yes, if you are going to clean install windows 10 from dvd or flash drive, you should put the ssd in first. Shouldn't be any problem there

The GT72vr has been one of the laptops I've been contemplating since I had good look with my GT71.

After reading this thread, is there anyone out there who don't have a freaking problem? What the hell is MSI doing and why are the resellers pushing them and then washing their hands of it 2 months later when things start to go wrong.

I was also looking at the GE73 but I just don't know anymore.

Hell, all these companies making gaming laptops suck now. We keep feeding them money and they just keep pushing out $hit. I can't find a single laptop with a GTX 1060 or higher that doesn't have a ton of problems. All these companies need to be reported to the better business bureau.

    Okay, rant over.

Be careful to take it with a grain of salt. How many people have purchased this laptop with no problems post here? Read through the posts and see how many are , "hey, just dropped in to say I love it and everything works great." There aren't many because people who don't have issues don't post as much as those that do. There looks to be lots of issues, sure. However, there's also lots of solutions.

I understand that. People only seem to post when something goes wrong. Sometimes I also wonder if some of these issues are caused by user error and people doing things (such as overclocking) they have no business doing.

It just seems like the quality is going down hill.

Ok, so I got my GT72VR 6rd-238 and purchased an ssd to throw in it. I opened it up and the M.2 slot is there, yet there needs to be a bracket to hold the SSD in place. Does anyone know how I would get a hold of one of these?

I found a picture from the MSI forums. It's that little metal bracket on the bottom with 2 screws.

GT72VR can only run one M.2 ssd.

I am aware of that. The model I purchased didn't come with an SSD, yet it still has the M.2 slot. That picture I posted shows a bracket that holds an M.2 SSD in place. That's what I was hoping to find.
