Hey, so this means that I will get "full speed" from my SSD if I put it in the ODD space? Or is there some advantage to installing the SSD into the current HDD slot, and putting the HDD into the ODD slot? I'm not that great with this so I don't wanna change more than I have to, and also I'm not sure if my files on the HDD are in any way affected if I switch these up. I also saw you had some G-Sync issues doing it this way.

    Thanks for your reply.

Sure. The first is the M.2 slot. You can see at the bottom a spot for a screw for a bracket. The 2nd pic shows my SSD in the slot, clearly I need a bracket to secure it.

    SSD2.png

You can see in a picture here, the SSD is secured with a bracket.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

MSI totally gimped the GT72 compared to the GT62, when the GT73VR came out. Pretty sad. You can try to call MSI on the phone and politely ask for a retaining bracket. They've been known to send replacement fans for dead fans so they might be able to help you if you are lucky, polite, reach the right person, and the sun and stars align perfectly.

Otherwise you would have to buy it from someplace with parts (ebay, aliexpress, taobao? No idea).

I'm fine with it having only one M.2 slot. I have a 500gb SSD ready to drop in there, so I don't need the additional 3 M.2 slots the older models have. I do need that bracket, though and I don't even know what it's called. That kind of precludes me buying it from somewhere. The models that do come with an SSD have that bracket already installed.

Try to do a search, either here or on the MSI forums on the MSI website. I am 100% sure that another person asked about the "missing" SSD and how to retain it.

Yeah there are threads that reference it on the MSI website. None seem to have any solutions.

    Hi.
Yes, I place the HDD in the ODD slot, and the SSD in the HDD slot; but I'm sure you'll get full SATAIII speed with your SSD if you place it in the ODD slot. You'll need an ODD caddy like this https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B00G4UZEKG
Btw, I had not G-Sync issues. I had display-GPU related issues, but not with the GSync.
Did you get a refurbished laptop? In both scenarios, you should ask your reseller for the piece.
If you reseller doesn't provide it, I would suggest you to search for it in aliexpress/ebay... like @ Falkentyne told you.

I got it brand new. Bought it from Mobile Advance off Amazon. They didn't seem to know what I was talking about. I did talk to MSI and they told me to email their parts guy [email protected]. I did so, and i'll update as soon as I hear from him. It's pretty simple, they're going to send me the bracket or I'm just going to return it.

Ok cool, I went ahead and ordered one through aliexpress (cost like $2.5 vs. the 10€+shipping at Amazon or closer to 50€ in Norwegian online stores...). Hopefully all will go well, I'll try just doing it the easiest route and go for SSD in the ODD slot, that way I move fewest possible components. While I'm in there I guess I'll have to clean it out and all. It will be worth it to stop being in the "not enough space" on my 128gb SSD-hell I'm currently in.

I posted this is in my recommend thread as well.

Ok so this is finally on the right track. I contacted MSI and they put me in contact with their parts guy, Tom. Tom had the following to say...

    We have
E3N-0000050-Y31, 2280 Form Factor, 80mm, HDD Bracket set w/ two screws, $10.00 + S/H (US Priority Mail: $10.00 for US; $24.00 for Canada)
If you want to buy from us, please fill up the attached order form (2 pages) and reply to me.

I was a little miffed by having to pay 20 dollars for it, so I called Mobile Advance (who I bought the laptop from) and they refunded me 20 dollars to cover the cost after I complained for a few minutes to them. Installation looks like it'll be easy. There's adhesive on the back of the bracket and the screws should line up as in the picture. I'll reserve final judgement when I actually get it and have a working SSD. It was amazing to me how many places I saw this question asked on the MSI forums and no one had this part# or solution. I'm posting it all over the place so people know.

Tom even sent me the same picture back.

Hope it works for you. What I don't understand is why they have to charge so much $10.00 for the part and $10.00 for shipping? Isn't this part supposed to be in the laptop already? In my opinion they should send it to you no charge if it is supposed to be there already, especially since your laptop is new. It's nice the seller you bought it from is covering the charge.

I agree it's ridiculous that the bracket isn't in there. MSI never seemed like they would consider sending it to me for free. Mobile Advance relented, but I did whine on the phone for a good 10 minutes before the girl just wanted to shut me up, lol. I agree though, why even put a M.2 slot in the machine and then be surprised people want to put something in there? Equally surprising is how little info there is on this. There's at least 3 threads in the MSI forums asking the same question, with no answers.

You can't, different cooling solutions for 1070 and 1080 (better for the second one) are required, and maybe your PSU wouldn't be enough powerful.

And what were the GPU temps? LM doesn't improve GPU temps very much compared to IC7 or Kryonaut.

As already mentioned in MANY other posts, GPU will get almost NO benefit from LM paste compared to good traditional paste.
That is why HIDEvolution does not use liquid metal on GPU's.

GTX 1080 draws much more power (200W) and runs much hotter, so it will get benefit, but still not as much as the CPU.
Also putting LM on GPU requires even more preparation because of all of the tiny resistors and conductors around the GPU slug..if any LM touches those...say goodbye to your GPU.

Can you please tell us HOW you prepared the GPU for kryonaut?

Did you use kapton or electrical tape? Did you apply a foam barrier like Mr Fox did, around the silicon (after putting on tape)? or did you apply nail polish to cover the resistors (this can take the place of electrical tape, but you still need a foam barrier IF you are moving the laptop around in a backpack often).

Hi, are you keeping the freeDos os? If not, i suppose you would just take your windows 10 pro os flash drive or dvd, plug in or put in, and delete or format those partitions already created and create a new partition(s) and let windows installer do the rest, as far as i know you don't need any additonal drivers except for raid. Don't forget to check the bios, ec firmware, vbios and drivers afterwards on the msi site to complete the installation.

hi, thx for your reply, i purchased an official win 10 pro license from amazon..so im installing it.

Yesterday i downloaded a crapload of bloatware (something like 2gb of stuff), from the msi support page of the product wich i dont actually know if are really necessary or not...so, im asking wich ones i have to install, to fully make use of the hardware. I would really like to avoid stuff that slows down the system and lower it's performances, or that cause issues...

i need also advises on how to configure the bios, and the windows settings...because i'm coming from a lenovo y50-70 with windows 7 (wich i love tbh)

thx again for any help and sorry for my bad english

    my gt72vr: i7-7700, gtx1070, ssd256, hdd1tb, 16gb ram, full hd tn 120hz g-sync
i dont need any VR related stuff/streaming or recording app for youtube an sht

Do you need advice on configuring bios settings or updating? For settings, can you post screenshots of your bios settings? For the bios update, i believe there are instructions in a pdf file included with the bios.

    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-7RE-Dominator-Pro.html

    For the ec firmware update,

    https://www.msi.com/files/pdf/EC_Firmware_Update_SOP_for_Windows_EN.pdf
    I don't see a vbios update there.

Remember to check your bios and ec versions in the help desk center before you install the newest versions. Also can check this in bios too.

    For drivers,

    https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT72VR-7RE-Dominator-Pro.html#down-driver&Win10 64

I recommend installing all except for vga, which the latest one is from nvidia site.

    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx

for utilites, i'm not sure about all of them because my model doesn't have those vr ones, i recommend a test install of these to see if you really need them or not.

Tridef vr, tridef smartcam, nahmic vr i dont know about, everything else i'd probably install.

For windows settings and software, I recommend installing classic shell also winaero tweaker at least

    http://www.classicshell.net/

    https://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.1836

For the windows settings, there is a separate "pc settings" or "settings"
that you should go through and check the settings, it's kind of up to each user to see what settings to enable or not.

Let me know if you need more help.

Those utilities do not have bloatware but you may not need all of them except drivers.
Can you show a screenshot of what you have downloaded?

Ok, you are good. You got all of them besides the guides.

You can download a copy of win 10 x64 and install for testing.

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

I think you can press delete key to enter bios when msi logo comes up when starting pc or you can enter from windows os-settings, recovery, advanced startup-which restarts the pc and gives you some option to enter uefi bios settings.

I recommend winaerotweaker for easily disabling those windows privacy stuff.

You'll want classic shell to get a a win 7 like interface.

I don't know about if msi utilities do any log/privacy stuff, or if they have performance issues.
