Hey guys, I have a question... If I change the M.2 SSD, do I have to buy Windows or does the machine already have a key built in? Thanks.

If your GT72VR came with windows 10 preinstalled, it should automatically activate if you use the same version, which is probably win 10 home x64. I'm not sure if is a "digital license" or actual product key which you can enter. If you install win 10 pro x64, you'll need to either buy a key or use a win 7 or 8.1 key if you have either to upgrade i think.

omg it has arrived today...it is humongous, love the screen brightness
after windows 10 installation, it downloaded all the drivers by itself...so i didn't really had to do much work...the transition from win 7 to this is quite traumatic....
after that i used that O&O suggested app for privacy stuff
then i installed the steelseries 3 program (music illumination ftw)
    and finally installed office

is there any other really required app to make all the hardware work? (as for the keyboard light for example)

cool program indeed...i was able to switch settings using the smartphone (the mobile app is a little buggy, since it can't find the pc by itself on the network but only inserting the ip manually...iunno what's wrong)

bios and firmware uppdated in the meantime (almost had an heartstroke when the monitor didnt light up...i was tempted to brutally turn it off...luckily i didn' ant waited until it finally restarted....phew)

now i dunno if i have to install smart screen and audio with nahm-somthing...feel like those are unnecessary, but i have a feeling the subwoofer isnt working properly...dont know how to test it properly still. i tryed a subwoofer test on youtube and....if i turn the front audio level to 0 leaving the woofer to 100 i hear no sound. if i turn the woofer to 0 makes no difference.

Installing Nahimic with Audio Driver gives one an interface to the sound options besides the regular windows one. I'm not sure what that smart screen is? Also if you have a song or video that has lots of bass in it, you'll know the subwoofer is working if you hear the deep beat/bass sound. It's quite a noticeable difference than not having a subwoofer at all on a laptop.

    According to my manual,

    the steelseries one:

This notebook may be pre-installed a unique keyboard
    manager application, SSE (SteelSeries Engine).
With this application, users will be able to own several
combinations of keyboard hot keys defined separately
    for specific occasions.
    • Use this button repeatedly to switch between keyboard
    1 (layer 1), keyboard 2 (layer 2), keyboard 3 (layer 3),
and keyboard 4 (layer 4) recurrently.

    the media player button one:

Use this button to activate video recording and realtime
    online broadcasting while playing games.
    • Button LED glows when this function is activated.
    • If XSplit Gamecaster is not installed, this button will be
used to launch the User Defined application.

However, i don't actually know how to map a user defined application to this button?

Lastly the screen button is quite handy:

Use this button to switch OFF the display of the
    notebook.
    • To restore the display, simply hit any key on the
    keyboard, or move the mouse.

By the way it says if you don't have the scm utitlity installed:

    7. Quick Launch Buttons
Use the quick launch buttons to activate the specific applications or tools. The
following quick launch buttons will only be functional in the operating system with
the SCM application installed. Find the SCM exe file in the optional all-in-one
disk that comes with the package or download it from MSI's website for easy and
    convenient operation.

    allright...
-got the screen off button working (it ask for reactivation password even if i disabled it when i wake up the screen...kinda tedious)
-the media button ask for a media program so i guess it's fixed
    -the steelseries is still broken...kinda
-the camera works, it was hidden in the devices....was able to turn it on by fn+f6

edit:uninstalling steelseries engine made the steelseries button kinda woriking. for example it switches to full illumin>game illumin>no illumin. haven't yet tried to reinstal steelseries engine 3

Yes it is removable, disconnect it from the main board and remove the camera and its cabling by opening up the screen panels.

Possibly a defective thermal module, see if you can get a replacement and change it yourself, but if you aren't comfortable of doing this yourself then you will have to request a RMA to send the system back for repair.

    Hey,

So while watching movies and on certain websites, I get these annoying "dividers" between colors, like you can clearly see the transition from one hue to another, it's not smooth or "blended" but clearly one block of color, then next. I found a fix a long time ago, which said to set the screen refresh rate to 90hz. Though it said that could lead to troubles. It didn't, but to be "sure" I put it up to 80hz as that already fixed the issue and the default was 75hz, so I thought that's not much more.

Then after I update my nvidia drivers it resets and I gotta do it again. And after the second to last update my screen won't turn back on after I shut it off, either with the button or after it shuts off for inactivity. I have to restart my laptop to get it working again. While I still had it at 75hz, I didn't have this issue, but when I put it up to 80/85hz the issue returns.

Anyone experienced something similar? I think it's an issue with "color gradients" and while googling to remove it, I've come across many users with the 72vr that had the same issue. This change of Hz helped them all. My screen iz a 120hz one, so going to 80 shouldn't really pose a problem, should it?

I was under the impression that BIOS updates are potentially dangerous? I might be mistaken though. Will I need to format and such if I do update my BIOS?

No need to format, it's done in the BIOS with the update file being in a USB drive. As long as you follow the instructions in the PDF file it comes with, it'll be fine.

BIOS updates fix some issues with the laptop such as the color banding so I'd suggest updating it if you're up to it.

EDIT: Also make sure it's for the model of the laptop you're using.

No, you do not need to format the OS to update.
It's better to update BIOS & EC and it's much safer compared to a long ago.
Also, make sure the system isn't overclocked/unstable prior to perform any of the updates.

Hi all, I somehow have a problem where my GPU has stopped boosting. It's stuck at the stock 1500 Mhz clock under load.

I already did a clean driver reinstall and switching power options around... I'm stuck. Could use any help, thanks.

I also have the latest BIOS, E1785IMS.118.

GPU-Z and FurMark keeps saying it's hitting a power limit... I don't understand why, it's well below it's usual 1900 Mhz boost clock.

EDIT: According to GPU-Z, the voltage is just stuck at 0.75 max. It used to go as high as 1.1 or so...

Do you have whisper mode on? That can be found in geforce experience, and then once turned on, it's adjustable within nvidia control panel.

Thanks for replying. I checked and it's turned off. I somehow fixed it now, I reset my BIOS and it's all good.

It was strange though, I didn't change anything before it happened.

I recommend you don't use Furmark bro unless you want this to happen eventually. It puts abnormal stress on the GPU that isn't realistic that one won't ever experience such load on the GPU in real world usage.

I might decide to download furmark and run it. I suspect the Nvidia drivers are heavily throttling it. I ran OCCT PSU test for an hour, with a TDP modded 1070 @ 185W, and no kaboom, and that uses a furmark+linpack combined test (well, some sort of furmark look-alike).

Will keep that in mind. Thanks.

I'm now using the built in GPU-Z render test, seems to work well. Managed to undervolt my GPU to 0.962 volts and it's holding 1898 Mhz under load while being under 69 C. It used to go over 77 C before, pretty happy with the results.

    Hey MSI GT72VR owners,

Does anyone noticed stuttering on games and benchmarks, lately?

Some MSI 1070 laptops have this "bd prochot" issue, causing CPU throttling to 800mhz, which causes severe stuttering, on CPU intensive games.

Check this thread, if you have this kind of problem with your laptop, and share your feedback.

    Thank you

    P.S

Any news on a updated BIOS to fix the Intel Spectre/Meltdown issue?

Msi removed the latest BIOS from the official MSI website, bios date 11 January 2018, because Intel told them to do so (some folks have bsod with this bios).

If you go there now, they put an older BIOS instead, which is strange, since they released many new bios after this one.

So, yes, you cant rollback, since the previous BIOS, is not avaliable for download on the official MSI website anymore.

    Share your feedback, thank you.

    Cheers

    Hey folks,

    New issue,

My MSI GT72VR 7RE comes with 120HZ 5MS TN screen.

Since a few months, i have noticed a faint flickering / blink on the right side of the screen, top right of the screen to be more accurate.

This only happens on fullscreen and with g-sync turned on, borderless works fine with g-sync, and if i turn off g-sync i can play fullscreen with no problem.

According to google research, it looks like a driver problem by Nvidia, the issue was introduced in a driver and they never fixed this issues on newest drivers.

    Video - https://imgur.com/a/lKLRv

Info about the issue - https://techreport.com/news/27449/g-sync-monitors-flicker-in-some-games-and-here-why

Lots of people reporting this issue - https://www.google.pt/search?client=opera&q=g-sync+flicker&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

    Anyone with this problem?

as far as i know, I played star wars battefront (2015) while laptop plugged in and didn't notice any battery drain. However the battery calibration isnt working for me. Have you calibrated the battery lately? Not sure if that would help. Also i have the 6rd model (gtx 1060)

Man you helped a lot, thank you.

Please keep checking if you have any battery drain while playing for a few hours, if you have like 1% or 2% less, tell me.

We are discussing in other thread, if the GT72VR models have the hybrid system or not (it uses the battery while playing games, plugged in, it helps the system it seems)

One more thing: do you have G-Sync?

I wish I remembered what EC Version I had, because I had SVET do an bios unlock mod for me for my GT72VR.
All I remember is it was the 7700HQ, kaby lake model with 1070, and a DVD slot, Hard disk drive, and one M2 "Combo" slot for NVME or or PCIE SATA SDD.
I remember older versions of the GT62VR had a "MSI multi drive adapter", forgot what it was called, and i remember posting about that, and found that that adapter simply won't work in the newer GT72VR. All of that BS combined with the locked CPU made me RMA exchange it.

But that battery drain I had was annoying. Forgot what game I was playing but almost 10% battery drain in one hour.

Some people with the GT73VR 6RF (1080 version) also had 10% battery drain in one hour when playing Witcher 3, but they were able to fix that by going in the unlocked Bios, "enabling" the Intel iGPU in System Agent->Graphics configuration (changing internal graphics from "Auto" to Enabled"), and then changing RC6 render standby from enabled to disabled under GT power management control. This changed the battery drain from 10%/hour to 3%/hour in Witcher 3

Never had that issue with such high drain on the kaby lake version, except if using 220W of total system power on 230W power ID (back then, before I knew how to change the powerID). Also changing Rc6 to disabled and enabling the iGPU (which doesn't really "enable" it, although Linux can address it and windows can "See" it), didn't change battery boost drain amount at all for me on mine.

    You're welcome.

Not currently using my laptop, but I should have some time this week to test out that battery usage.

Yes, I have gsync on the 75 hz screen.

I'm not sure about the hybrid system, but GT72VR utilizes only the nvidia gpu.

So I just played two hours-Star Wars Battlefront (2015). I didn't notice any flickering of the screen. My battery was actually still charging while playing as i started the game with the battery not fully charged but it did charge fully-still at 100% as of now.

I also had updated the bios beforehand as i see MSI released it for my model here:
