For some reason in the german speaking countries there is a price difference between the Gs70 and the GS60 of 300€.
may anyone link me an european shop which sells the GS60 2QE for under 1600€?
I would still prefer the GS60 over the GS70, but in Austria i would pay for the GS70 1550€ and for the GS60 1899€.

    Hey guys,

Finally I'm about to buy this beast (even if there is no 970m 6gb yet), and was wondering : what's the brand of the current so-dimm 8 go memory in it ? I'd like to buy a second same one in order to get 16go of "RAM"...

That will avoid me to buy a complete new set of 2x8go Gskill brand new which are a bit expensive (150€).

    Thx for your responses. :)

I think it's safe to assume it's not possible or will be really expensive. The amount of labor to completely disassemble is high and there's a good chance the keyboard and the frame are one piece. Then there's the issue with sourcing the part.

    Hi all,

I've just ordered the 3k version of this laptop.
I've noticed it comes with 2 SSD (2x128gig) set in RAID 0. I'd like to know if it would be possible to install a dual boot windows8.1/Ubuntu14 on the SSDs ?

    Thank you!

How would you like to do that ... that's almost impossible...

The only chance to buy for the price which is almost like without VAT is to buy a notebook right from the distributor... thats how i am gonna buy it :) but it's about good friendships etc.

I've been applying thermal compound on CPUs and GPUs for a long time and I've found it to be far from being an exact science.

The programs and methods to measure temperatures can have a margin of error +/- 2 degrees C.

If we could lap and polish our heatsinks and chips to be perfectly flat and have zero pores in the metal for air to hide we would not need any thermal compound but such is not the case.

Our chips and heatsinks are not flat and the metal is porous.Air,which is a very poor conductor of heat, fills the pores and uneven surfaces and needs to be replaced with thermal compound to get the best heat transfers from chip to heatsink.

The more metal to metal contact and least amount of air should result in the best cooling. This means very little TC is needed to do the job when properly applied. An excess of TC usually will do more harm than good.

Every time I've got a new notebook with factory applied TC it was always way too much.

When repasting I use a commercial TC remover like Tuniq TR-1 to remove as much of the old TC as posible without leaving any residue as you would get if you used rubbing alcohol.
    http://www.amazon.com/Tuniq-TR-1-Thermal-Material-Remover/dp/B004HL95XG

I've found that even doing what I think is an exact copy of my previous repaste I can end up with a different result measured with the same software.

Here's some test results done by hardware secrets.Note room temperature and least difference. That TC should be best but your results may differ.

BTW I live in UAE and want the GS60. My father might go to Germany in the coming month. I was thinking if he could bring it back with him it would be awesome.
Would non EU residents also have to pay VAT, that's not right :p

This article below got me thinking that the real strength of the 900 series does not show on the 970m but only on the 980m. Check out the link or at least the comparing data in the table inside:

Maxwell Goes Mobile: First GeForce GTX 970M Benchmarks

I was sure I want the ghost pro until this article came out. Now I'm thinking it may not look like the best 2 years from now especially when there is a thin competitor with 980m coming at the same time

I'm not sure where you got that from, but that article does nothing but compliment the 970m. The two processor aren't meant to go head to head. For a processor that only draws 90-w to be able to run the big games at ultra at 40fps is amazing. Also, the 970m still shows a 15-20% increase in performance compared to the 880m while reducing heat by an avg of 10°c is ridiculous. The choice is up to the buyer. Low power gpu or a higher power gpu with a higher price point, a different price point for each buyer. It's whether you want to spend more with the risk of more heat or save a little on a gpu that runs a little cooler, kind of the point with the ultrabooks. The P35Xv3 looks amazing, but we wont know how great it is until reviews come in with heat test. I would rather by the g-60 with 3k and 6gb 970m. But if that option doesn't come along, I'll get a 3k p35x, only if it doesn't set the house on fire.

You realize that the only relevant bar graphs are the first two, because they represent up to 1080p gaming? You can see that 970m performs much faster than 870m and those are before the 2 new drivers that support 900m hit the streets. 970m is, on its worst case, as fast as 880m. And on average, faster, while consuming less power.

It also has quite a nice overclocking headroom. It is a great GPU!

I asked today one of the biggest MSI Reseller in the German Speaking Countries about the GS60 and GS70 6GB VRAM Editions.
He told me that they possibly come out at the beginning of the month november.
But he needs to ask his partners on monday.
So on monday i will be able to tell you guys more.
About the price: he said it would cost about 100-200€ more than the 3GB VRAM Version

    I think the 970m is a great chip for the gs60. I plan to buy a 3k gs60 with 6gb 970m. But, if they don't release a 3k 6gb version, I'm going to get the p35Xv3 instead

A year ago, heck six months ago, I would have agreed. But now it seems game developers just love to use a lot of vRAM due to how the new consoles are set up. I think the extra cost is justified considering you may not even be able to run some games with higher detail even though it could handle it, just because of lack of vRAM.

Could you find out which versions will be offered with 6GB - e.g. MSI website only shows the red version of GS70 with 3/6gb option. Black and sikver are only 3gb...

exstrat I agree it's a great GPU, but it's not a big price gap to buy the 980m and I also agree that the heat tests will be the final vote for me between 970m MSI Ghost Pro and the Gigabyte P35Xv3.

I am also considering the MSI 4k option with 6GB vram. Whatever happens I may use gaming on a secondary screen anyway and if 4k is a problem my secondary screen will be FHD or something less than 4k.

We both worry about the heat and we both want the 6GB GPU. I'm just saying that 980m is a much better GPU than the 970m if the heat is not an issue. They are both offered in a small 15.6 thin laptop so ... if I could use the 980 I'll go with the P35Xv3.

If you hear about anything can you pm me ? I'll do the same.
    Thanks
    JD

The price difference between 970M and 980M can be $300 (P35Wv3-CF2 vs P35Xv3-CF2) or $262 (GT72-216 Mem + ODD Upgraded vs GT72-211 Stock).
In games 980M leads by an average of only 30%. Considering the extra heat and power consumption I will go with 970M.
(If Gigabyte can handle 980M well, they can handle 970M BETTER. And it's unlikely that they manage to greatly improve the cooling on P35)

The 1080p panel was a VA panel which is like IPS but not quite there IMO. Not sure about the 1620p panel though, but it is 'wide viewing angle'.

Edit: VA is better than TN and IPS is better than both.

But easier to do upgrades yourself compared to the GS60 and comes with a CDRW or Blu Ray Burner/ODD bay if you're into that.

Anything on a 3K version (6GB VRAM)? I'm starting to doubt it will be released and that I should go for the FHD instead. And 4K does not seem necessary on this machine

Per my conversation with someone at XoticPC last week, they should have the GS60 970m 6gb FHD middle of the week. Some are already spoken for but they will have extra's and I don't know how many extras. Just passing it along for anyone wanting to order the 6GB FHD version from XoticPC.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ-ULlxrQpc

check @ 6:39. So much easier, all you do is unscrew bottom case and thats it.

I'm not sure about my luck lately with the GS60s. The first GS60 with GTX860M I got has a defective audio port. The replacement came in and it has screen flickering problem and the AC's outer rubber was scraped off. Now with the GS60 GTX970M, it has buzzing sound on the GPU whenever I play a game. The audio jack for this is one is very tight and it is hard for me to pull out my headphones once I manage to plug it in. Plus the screen bleeding on my is bad.

    Why can't I get a decent GS60 without problems @gentechpc!!!! 3 GS60s 5 problems!!!

Am I missing something or is the Cyberpower Fangbook the exact same laptop as the GS60 but cheaper with better specs.

Customize Fangbook Edge 4K Gaming Laptop Gaming Notebook

Better CPU, 6GB VRAM, 4K screen, few bucks cheaper.

Is MSI worth the extra premium or it doesn't matter since it's all the same manufacturer anyway.

Sorry for the issues you are having with your GS60.
Where did the noise come from? Speakers? Or fan?
Can you check the mixer properties to verify the name of audio controller? It must show Realtek High Definition audio and nothing else.

    Thank you.
