I think I did get epically trolled. Device Manager doesn't indicate the 7970M. I thought it might be because of Enduro, but I think its clear I have been served up a rotten dish. Oh well, thanks everyone. Cheers!

I can't honestly believe they forgot. You could have gotten a DOA card and it was an oversight IF it was tested (I mean...it boots, so normally they wouldn't think of it cause there is video, albeit the wrong video). Could be that the card shifted loose during shipment too...I've seen weirder things in laptops occur before. In any case, I say time to call the re-seller to resolve, then MSi if that doesn't work. Hope all the best for you.

Yeah, even when you disable enduro in the bios it still shows the 7970M in the device manager.

It's most likely the card is dead as the card cant move (Screw at the top right and each heatsink screw is attached to a post too so thats 5 screws keeping it in place).

I could use some luck but I havent seen 7970M heatsinks in eBay in a while. The last thing I want to do is to mod 7970M.
Thanks to this forum I got myself HD 7970M heatsink order and in 3 weeks I will have and then ill post screens.
Thats how easy it is, just search and install it. Ill install the MSI bios on the card and I believe it works better with that bios than with other ones but lets see.

Hi Meaker, I've been lurking on the OCUK forums and have been contemplating on buying the MSI GX60. I've scoured the net and cannot find any reviews apart from the one posted on the forum. Since you have bought the laptop from OCUK. Could you give me your honest opinion as to whether I should purchase the laptop? I'm primarily going to be using it for gaming and creating artwork. However one thing that is keeping me from buying this isI keep on hearing the the GPU is not being used to its full potential as a result of the CPU. What's your take on this hoopla?

    My thanks in advance.

Yes the cpu holds it back, but less than a similar priced i7 machine with a 660m would hold the game back, also this model looks to be much more upgradable.

I thought the 7970M wasn't being used to its fullest potential because of the AMD video/chipset drivers, not because of the A10-4600M's processing power?

Hey, is the chassis/case on the GX60 the same as the GT60/Force 16F3 barebones?

It just looks like the GX60 is using the same plastic case that the barebones get, and not the brushed aluminum chassis the regular GT60's use.

I have been having a good play around with a GX60 today and it is actually a fairly decent laptop and I think a lot of the issues with the cpu have been a bit unfair,

I have gone through tons of games and all run well at 1080p, most with max detail settings or only a little tweak. For general use adding an SSD makes a world of difference the laptop is as responsive as my I5 desktop. Not once today have I felt the A10 has been struggling. I'm sure under benchmark conditions it will be noticeably slower but who really spends all day doing benchmarks anyway. Even cpu demanding games like guild wars 2 or X3 seem to run fine without any major slowdowns or issues.

At £899 I doubt you will find a better or more capable gaming notebook tbh.

i like this respond. and i totally agree with you, unless you do video encoding all day ( which you should've gotten a different computer for that) or doing some super high CPU intensive calculation like the benchmarks, this CPU should handle everyday stuff no problem.

    * Meaker

How much of GPU utilization do you get in games with your GX60?

I checked with MSi Afterburner 2.2.4 on my GX60 and noticed, that not matter what game - GPU is used at about 50-60% of it's horsepower and changing graphical settings in games does not influence the utilization value.

I tried with Black Ops - game known for it's crappy CPU optimalization, to see if it's the A-10, that is holding the whole laptop back and guess what - maximum settings and no choking of the CPU, even durning massive battles gameplay is smooth, but 7970m is still working at it's 50-60 % capability....

Seriously, ...the hell ? I suspect Enduro to be screwing up in GX60 aswell, spite MSi announcing before GX60 release, that it won't supper from this bug...

The only game, that uses 90-100% of the 7970m all the time for me is Metro 2033 and thanks to that I can run the game on ULTRA FHD and get ~30 fps allowing for comfortable gameplay.

Have you found any way to resolve this underutilization? or any new info from AMD or MSi to adress this problem?

*BTW Meaker -> Pscore of over 5000 in 3Dmark11, damn man, impressive. I think I will stick to my stock clocks score of ~P4350 for now, since games run well already for me, except for the Enduro issue.

All my spare time has been placed into finding stable clocks.

Something that the new drivers has completely destroyed lol.

    Some metro results:

    •Average Framerate: 27.00
    •Max. Framerate: 86.52
    •Min. Framerate: 5.92

Highest details, 4xAA, no DOF or advanced PhysX.

Ok so im loving this laptop to pieces but having a major problem, when I run games they are all using the onboard graphics an not the 7970, and its doing my head in, I cant see anyway around it. I have tried to mess with everything an I just need the answer on how to change the graphics and keep them that way.

    Thanks in advanced

Go to the CCC panel and then to the Power Management settings.

At the "plugged in" tune up the settings from "Optimal Performance" to "Maximum Performance" when AC charger is attached - > that should do it :)

    If not, then inform us.

Yeh, I tried that, when i first got it I downloaded the latest drivers from AMD, I have worked out what the problem is though! When I install the driver, it installs the onboard instead of the 7970, and I can find no way to install the right one, been here for hours now, have any idea? did you have this problem or did it just work? have tried disabling it in device manager, and uninstalling to no avail, amd says disable it in bois but there isnt an option as far as i can see.

So frustrate was gettting 20fps on GTA IV on max settings and was getting a little worried, when I benchmarked it said the onboard so was kind of relived,

Thanks in advanced, and thanks for your quick comeback!

Seems like you are worry about nothing. Why do not you enjoy your games, instead watching what MSI AfterBurner shows? I always do that and never listen what few "nonsense programs" (Chinbench, SuperPI) are saying, probably same thing true for Afterburner and you can enjoy your laptop without limitation.

    Yeah, I guess you're right.

I installed the newet AMD drivers BTW.
Catalyst 12.11 beta4 - I got a huge boost over previous MSi drivers - from ~P4350 it jumped to almost P4700 with no OC involved -> DO LIKE! :)

Just came here to day to say, that this laptop begins to grow on me everyday. I like it a lot, money well spend ! :)

Silly question here to more experienced users - do our GX60's have upgradable CPU and GPU in the future? AFAIK there are to be new series of CPU's from AMD in coming year, witch will use the same socket as A-10 and as for GPU is it embedded into the motherboard or is it upgradable aswell? to HD 8990m in the future for example?

GPU and CPU are fully changeable, though the GPU heatsink might need a little work if the PCB is a different layout.

It’s the 26 and no one has this laptop in stock, I was really looking forward to getting this laptop.

Say can any of you owners tell me what’s the make and model of the screen? So I can get a 95% Gamut aftermarket screen. Also can this system support better DIM’s like Kingston's PnP - 8GB Kit (2x4GB) - DDR3 1600MHz CL9 SODIMM?

Also anyone happen to know where I can purchase a Bigfoot Killer 1103 network card?

I'd be interested in knowing if you can fit the Killer Wireless N card to this laptop also.

@ Meaker you have some stupid core clocks on that card of yours - no surprise your benching so high on it!

I have two questions which were allready asked here but without answer:

1: Is it the same barebon as the GX660 or is it the same as the GT60. Because I heard that the barebone of GT60 is a major update from the GX660.
2: Do we know more about the possibility of an aftermarket backlight keyboard?

To bad it is more expensive then we thought. It would be a great laptop if the price was the 1050 euro as we first read. No it is choosing between the GT60 which is arround 300 euro more expensive or the GX60.

Has anyone an benchmark of battlefield 3?

1: It's mostly based off the GT60 shell but has a plastic screen back but aluminium palm rests.
    2. There is a connector and the touch controls have a backlight control so it should work if you can source the keyboard.

But according to this quote it won't work, or do you think otherwise?

But if you think it work, is this the right keyboard? Link. It is the replacement keyboard for the MSI GT780

It won't officially work no, but unless they have coded it specifically to not work, everything is physically there.

So like always, no guarantees, but it has a decent chance, I could try the sager keyboard on the msi...............

Has anyone ran 3dmark06 at default settings?? I see scores like 12k 3d06, but this is at native res of 1080p, which is pretty hard to compare to when a lot of budget laptops don't come with 1080p screens.

    Thanks.

I do not have my gx60 yet, waiting patiently. I've a question though. With the newest beta drivers, are most of your gx60s performing wonderfully on games at max settings? I have an hp envy 15-3040nr with a "radeon 7690m" which is

really a reclassed 6xxx card. I've overclocked it and it runs borderlands 2, skyrim, and a few other games at max settings. Can I expect this laptop to at least be on par with that? That radeon 7970m isn't crap without proper driver support.

    Thanks in advance!

    Skyrim on MSi GX60 notebook with HD 7970m GDDR5 and A-10 4600m CPU demo 2 - YouTube

As you probably can see, game runs very well.

I put the backlit keyboard from my clevo p150EM in it, MSI ones will work too.

Robe66rt if you need to game AND encode video, I would move to the GT series and the intel machines will be MUCH faster.

you arent there is a clear difference in performance when you use quads and dual cores. that was tested using intel cpus.

    thanks for the link!

after seeing the results for shogun 2 I can safely say that there is something wrong with that benchie. Here is why:

Shogun 2 likes extremely high clocks, it usually loads one core 100% and the rest at 25-50%.

I have several benchies using desktops cpus and the difference is quite great when it comes to intel and amd, sometimes 100% if you compare the amd FX line.

here is one thread that has a chart comparing the performance of several cpus, just look at the clocks of those beasts.

basically i5 3570k at 5ghz will give you those kinds of fps and that is coupled with a gtx 590, there is absolutely no way in hell that the A10 will give that kind of performance. Do note that everything DO counts when it comes to tw games, cpu, gpu, ram speed and timings, platform used... Granted sli/xfire performance on tw games if you dont set those right is extremely terrible.
