Hi, It's kind of hard to scroll through whole topic. I've got a question, I have msi gx60 1ac laptop and can I simply buy newer amd mobile processor A10-5750M and change it in laptop without bios flashing etc. ?

Because the CPU is bad for RTS and MMO games.

Heavy CPU bottleneck, i7 would double that framerate with 7970m.

You can buy a new A10-5750m and drop it into your GX60 1AC I have the same laptop and I'm getting a GX70-3BE with the A10-5750m the GX60 1AC is going to my roommate and we will try dropping my 5750m in without a bios unlock see what happens, ill keep you posted.

AFAIK you can just drop in the 5750m and it will work from the outset, no need for BIOS update.

Yep, just drop in the 5750m, no issue at all, but be aware you may experience smoother gameplay ;)

Record temp for me was The Witcher 2 - I reached 95 'C, every other game plays a lot cooler, temps between 77-83 'C are normal then.

Not dangerous yet, but it's already unhealthy for the GPU when it stays like that for longer periods.

It's winter here and my rooms cold (10c at night) and the A10 sits anywhere between 60-70c and the GPU anywhere between 65-75c. The air leaving the vents is more warm than hot, and the surface of the laptop doesn't even get warm, just goes from cold to room temp.

It's a very cool running laptop - the perks of it being fat with big heatsinks. :p

I do not understand why people keep bringing this up, I've had zero problems with many MMO and CPU intensive games. Tera / GW2 / Company of Heroes 2 / Dragons Prophet no problems with lag or frame-rate.

Plus with the ability to get an unlocked A10-5750m ES put into the system we are in good hands.

To each their own but for the price of this laptop I'm not disappointed at all. Love the fact that I can bring this outside and get almost 6 hours of battery power on it.

As far as I can see there are not many ES CPUs out there, so hardly something to rely on.

Well, when it comes to satisfaction, it's all pretty relative. Some people are perfectly happy playing at lower frame rates, while others have fps counters running constantly, and get irritated when it goes under 30.

The general rule with MMOs, is they require a high end CPU due to all the players on the screen. Even WoW, running on an old engine, can go under 30fps for me in crowded cities. Neverwinter Online, being a new game, was much much worse, and actually crippled my GX60 to sub 20s fps while in the city. Admittedly, that was during beta, so perhaps things will get better with time.

Personally, any laptop under 1200$ that can run today's games at decent frame rate is a winner in my book.

The thing is, there is a good way to greatly increase the FPS in many games, simply turn off the shadows entirely - the CPU does much more work on them than the GPU, for instance - in Borderlands turning off dynamic shadows increases te minimal fps from 27-30 to 45-50 and in Black Ops 2 multiplayer turning them off gives you additional 5-10 fps.

You can leave other details on maximum, since GPU is the main working unit here.

Games look almost the same with and without shadows, sometimes even better without (in my taste).

My gx60 is arriving from Support center in Portugal ( RMA ) .
Anyway there is no danger to the original versions of MSI, as much security may fail to update the bios and say that is not supported, but nothing more :)

Passmark CPU tests suggests it's like an i5-3210m, which is also my feeling.
I'd say the GX60 is about as fast as my GE60 before I put in an i7-3612 which had an i5-3210m from stock.

No, not at all, but compared to an i7 the A10 falls behind quite heavy. (like in GuildWars2 or NFS:MW appearantly)
Other than that it's a great machine.

Why would msi put a high end gpu with a a10?

Is it a true quad core? I'm a die hard AMD fan it just seems odd!

Well, the 4600m was the best APU at the time. There are already i7 + 7970m solutions out there, so this is an option for those willing to sacrifice CPU power for more affordable gaming options.

    Yes it's a true quad.

It's a pretty great machine, though honestly, I would say you don't REALLY get a 7970m, considering it'll never really be able to performance to its potential. Looks great on the marketing side though, but slapping in a weaker GPU would have brought down the price even more and really given the same kind of performance.

There are still quite a number of games that make use of the advantage 7970m...80-99% GPU utilization when monitored with Afterburner...sure, it's slower than i7 solution...but still very capable of demolishing 675mx, 765m, 770m....
