    Gr8!

However, don't get your hopes so high, it will only give you 10 % boost. Still, GX60 can use any additional CPU power it can get!

You don't need to update BIOS, just pop it inside and it will work.

Kind of at my wits end here. How the HELL does anyone use AMD OD? There's no documentation that I can find, so trying to set the damned thing up is like shooting in the dark.

Let me see if I can outline my basic problem, maybe someone can read where I'm going wrong.

The only way I understand it is that I'm supposed to open the program and then:
    >Performance Control>Clock/Voltage

OK, so I don't have much idea how to parse this info, but fortunately the only things that can be effected on this page are the Turbo Core Control, the CPU Core 0 Multiplier, and the GPU IGP (MHz).

When I try raising the Core 0 Mulitplier to 27, it tells me that Turbo Core Control needs to be disabled, so I do that. After that the multiplier resets to 23x. If I moved the slider back to 27 and hit apply, it gives me the standard warning and then, once again, returns to 23x.

    What am I missing?

Oh yes, I'm on Windows 8.1 Preview using the AMD 8.1 beta drivers.

    Don't use AOD - it's cr*p.

I had the same issues as you do, and when SOMEHOW I managed to get it to 27 X multiplier the performance was WORSE, than that of PSCheck 2.7 Ghz forced turbo.

Delete AOD, the on program that allows to force turbo the way it is intended is PSCheck, but that one has issues with Win 8 AFAIK.

Hey guys! I was wondering if anybody could help me with this one pls...I'm using 7970m from GX60 in G683 laptop with i7-2630qm since november I think..and the graphics works perfectly fine, flashed with Dell bios.....anyway, the GX60 laptom works fine on its own on integrated 7660G too, but there is this issue, when the MXM slot is empty, the cooling fan is going 100% no matter what...So I was just wondering if anybody here ever read, or even tried to solve this little problem any way that would, or could work...I'd greatful for any suggestions, but as I said, it is not a big deal, the GX60 is barely used, for work, and the g683 with i7 and 7970m OC'd radeon for everyday gaming no problems....Thank you for any kind of advice what could be done about that max fan speed issue ! :)

    Hi guys!
I'm planning to buy an used GX60 with A10-4600m. I was wondering wich os is the best for gaming. Windows 7 is good because of the possibility of using PSCheck but Windows 8 is more optimized for AMD's APUs.
Correct me if I'm wrong ;)
    So here's the question : windows 7 or 8?

    Hint of warning.

    A-10 4600m and A-10 5750m are garbage, so if you're fine with having a 7970m bottlenecked by 50%, then get Win7.

Get i7 + 770m, even if it will lag you will lower details from ultra to high... and 60 fps.

With GX60, that wretched A-10 CPU ruins the entire notebook as a "gaming machine"...

I have the feeling that you had a bad experience with your notebook and then you feel obliged to criticize this PC as much as you can.
I am fully aware of the weak CPU, but for the price this notebook is the best gaming machine you can find.

Basically the A10 4600m & 5750m are a bottleneck in gaming performance for any game that relies heavily on the CPU. Games that are built to rely on the GPU, you shouldn't have any problems. Games built to rely on the CPU, you'll hit problems. You'll see conflicting reviews from different folks depending on what they play. Generally the Intel chips do not have this problem. Therefore, you get the most balance out of the CPU/GPU combo, where as with the GX laptops you've got an overly powered GPU with a not as powerful CPU.

I would agree that the I7/770 combo is better than what is in the current GX series, but I doubt the I7/760 is better than the AMD combo.

Good news is that with every iteration, AMD is getting better CPU performance out of their APUs... bad news is that it still isn't anywhere near what Intel is releasing. :/

The thing that grinds my gears is that MSi advertised (and still does!) this model as a "gaming notebook".

And here it is - a "gaming notebook" witch doesn't play video games well at all.

False advertising killed MSi for me, never gonna buy their notebook again.

False advertising? Are you kidding me? The gx60 is a gaming notebook. It outperform every other notebook at the same price in 90% of games.
The fact that your favorite game is CPU dependant does not justify your campaign against this notebook.
So stop saying bulls to everyone in order to criticize the gx60 and make something of your life.

Yeah, a gaming notebook should drop to 20 fps in games...

Sorry, but when games like Borderlands 2 drop to 20 fps and I see that GPU is utilizied in 40% and the latter 60% is wasted, then I get pissed.

MSi should have added i3 in there, then I would rip it out and put an i7 inside, but instead were locked to A-10 and 50% bottleneck.

I have considerd to pull out the 7970M and sell the gx60 without the vidcard. You can get like 350 euro for it i guess and pay extra money to buy an i7 laptop where the 7970M fits ( new or used )

Wow buddy, all I see is a lot of complaining. Obviously you didn't investigate your options enough and purchased the wrong laptop for your needs. Because you failed to read the numerous reviews that pointed out the advantages and flaws of the machine, you need to justify your poor decision by ragging on the laptop. This helps you come to grips with the purchase and allows you to escape the poor judgement by deciding that the laptop is simply junk. Dr. Phil out.

In my own experience the last 2 months, I am happy with this laptop. I have the A10-4600M in mine. Sure, it isn't the fastest but it does its job. For me, this was a cheap replacement for my desktop while I worked the summer in Alaska. I'll admit that not all of the games I am playing are demanding, Empire Total War is now 5 years old but it runs great and looks fine. Arkaham City stutters at times but I am happy with it. Shogun 2 I had to dial back the troops to the second highest number in unit scale and it stutters, more importantly, load times are lengthy but I just use that time to grab a beer!

All in all, I am not ing. I am curious though, is the self upgrade to a 5750M difficult? I know it voids the warranty, but 10% is needed. Also, where can you find an A10-5750M? Any links would be appreciated.

Finally, I see an A10-5757M has been announced. Would this fit in the motherboard?

Thanks for any help guys. And in summary of the GX60: It is a great budget laptop that is perfect for running games that are a few years old at max settings. If you are looking to play the newest games then expect dialed back settings or lengthy load times. Still, I'm going to try Rome 2 TW on it. My desktop will chew that up but I want to see if this baby will handle it!

This is a BGA chip and is soldered into the motherboard so it cannot be swapped like the 4600 -> 5750. However, the 5757 is the exact same chip as the 5750 with the exception of the difference described.

The 5750 most likely will be the last upgrade that this gen of GX60 can get... details about Kaveri chip are iffy, but it sounds like all hints are pointing to new socket.

Yes the model number difference is just so ordering is simple as you know exactly which type of interface you are getting rather than the same model with different options.

Thanks! I won't get my hopes up for an A10 successor to the 5750M, however I hope it happens.

In the meantime, it looks like the 5750 is still tough to find. Any suggestions where to buy?

To those who complain about this laptop.
What games can run in i7 + 770M you can not do the GX60 with 5750m + 7970M?

Most folks have luck with eBay or other auction sites. I don't believe there is a retailer where you can buy the chip.

I've found that just about every game has a few settings that can be lowered in order to alleviate the load on the CPU. I don't know what settings you play your games at, but when you have a budget gaming laptop, then you need to meet it half way. But all the graphically demanding games I've played so far have ran phenomenally well on the GX60 at high settings. Metro Last Light, Far Cry 3, Crysis 3, Skyrim, Bioshock Infinite, to name a few.

Borderlands 2 is a console port, so it may not be as optimized. Still though, I have a feeling you probably just tried to max out every setting.

The Witcher 2 , Risen 2 , Fallout 3 and New Vegas , Amalur , Stalkers , Crysis , Skyrim and many many more . Everything on ultra or very high details . GX60 is not a gaming machine ? I think it is . And it's not so bad :hi2:. I think you should get more information before you buy it . That's all.

Well , i bought it when i first came out so i had no more information than the info from msi . No benchmarks for different games, nothing. It suits me well with a few setting lowered so i dont complain that much , still is a great deal for its price. BUT i can understand that some people are complaining with the info MSI provides. Yes its a gaming machine but for games who relies , much more on the graphics card than the cpu and with the knowledge i have now i would have waited a few months to save up for a alienware with a 7970M. An early adaptors burden :p

Edit: I must say i "bought" it for 800 euro from the company i work for, so i really cant complain ;)

I just bought this laptop and the problem is it always shutdown (or go to sleep mode or hibernate...I'm not sure) after i left it idle for like half an hour. To keep it busy, i tried to let it open the browser and download 8GB file from the internet and leave it. My expected is the laptop should keep on awake at least through out the download process. However, the actual result is not as expected where it still went OFF without even finish the download. Hope all the GURUs here can help me out regarding this matter..

You need to change that in the power management settings. Right click the battery icon in the task bar, select Power options, Change when the computer sleeps --- and select something higher than 30 mins there...

    Hey guise,
I was thinking about buying GX60 for a few days now and have a few questions about it that hopefully someone who owns it can answer for me (I will not be able to return it, so I want to make sure I know what I'm buying.)

I can get a brand new GX60 w/ 2 years warranty for like 800€ and was thinking it's a great deal for 7970M. Initially I wanted to buy a similar priced Asus N56VZ w/ i7-3630 nV650M DDR3 (duh) combo and even though it looks better and is more compact I thought that GX60 would give me a much better gaming performance despite its very mediocre CPU. Can you confirm this?

I also have an option to buy a 'Hitman edition' which sports 'better' 5750M APU but it costs 100€ more. Do you think the performance difference between 4600M and 5750M is noticeable enough to justify the 100€ bump in price (I can care less about the included Hitman game)?

I am also a bit concerned about the speakers quality. It was also one of the main reasons for me to consider buying N56VZ (it has external subwoofer and very good Bang&Olufsen speakers). The reviewers said some nice things about the GX60's speakers, but what do you guys think about them? I'm mainly concernedabout its bass and soundstage (it is going to be used for a lot of movies and music besides gaming).

And lastly, the GX60 has been out for a while and it's not the newest guy around. Do you think there is any better bang-for-buck gaming mashine around as of now?

Hope my post is not too tl;dr and someone is actually going to care enough to help me. Thanks.

Initial answer is no, GX60 does not give you 7970m performance in games - the GPU is there, but it is wasted because of that trash CPU.

The real in-game performance on GX60 often represents that of a mediocre notebook.

Borderlands 2 often dips to 20 fps - you can quess how uncomfortable aiming is in a FPS game with 20 fps.

Sandbox games run terrible, don't even try GTA IV or Saints Row III - GX60 truly shows as an MSI's embarrassment here.

Crysis 2 also dips to 20-30 fps once you look at lot of geometry, it's just mind blowing how weak the CPU is and how much it holds the 7970m back.

Even a non-demanding game like Mass Effect 3 can dip to 30-40 fps sometimes! (insane!)

    I strongly advice against GX60, if you're a gamer.

If gaming would be just a side thing for you, then GX60 gives you GREAT FHD matte display, great sound quality for a notebook, solid keyboard.

Don't fall for the 7970m inside, it is used only at 50% of it's capability (at best).

    So in a quick summary:

As a notebook for a casual gamer - it's good.

As a notebook for a hardcore gamer - it's terrible, stay away. GPU's like 7970m must have a i7 CPU, there is no way around it. MSI thought this would work, if they paired it with A-10 4600m, but performance in MANY games shows, that MSI did not test their model thoroughly before they branded it as a "gaming notebook".

Additional cons come when you think about GX60's futureproof status.

If the CPU is already way too weak for many games, guess what will happen in the future - the CPU will be so weak, that games from 2014 and onward might run only at 20% of GPU utilization (sic!), because disparity between CPU and GPU will be growing and in consequence GPU utilization will dip the more CPU demanding games will become.

Ok, how about we swap the CPU for a newer version in the future? Well, guess what - the Kaveri and future generations of AMD CPU's will have a different socket, than that in GX60. So not only you would get blocked by a weak CPU, but also blocked from upgrading in the future! - so you're stuck with bottleneck forever, when it comes to GX60.

And don't think A-10 5750m in the newer GX60s is any better - 10% more of a crappy CPU like A-10 4600m does not give you awesome CPU, it's still crap - only faster by petty 10%.

Personally, if I could retain display, keyboard and sound quality of GX60 - I would gladly swap my A-10 4600m and HD 7970m for newest i7 + 660m (for 670m with kissing of the hand).

And don't call me a hater people - you know, if you got GX60 as I do, that this model is badly balanced and not tested before it's release.

I don't care about P5000 score in 3Dmark11 - I care, that the real time performance of GX60 in numerous games is, as if GX60 had a mere ~P2750 score in 3Dmark11.

I bought this model before any reviews came out - only because MSI b*tched everywhere, that their gaming notebook is a great choice and beats the competition with it's price for just a small sacrifice... yeah, we got a sobering results now, all because of that A-10 inside instead of a actual CPU.

So I feel mislead and never gonna buy anything MSI again and I advise you not to fall for their trick as I did, if you want something MSI get a different model with i7, i5 at least.

Get the Hitman Edition if possible!

Also, as much as LisuPoland is hating lately, he's not right. compared to similar priced laptops the GX60 is one of the best choices,
only if you play MMOs something with an i5 and 650M/750M might be a better choice at this price point. Period.

I also have a GE60 with a 650M and I7 and barely use it anymore, as the GX60 just delivers higher details at reasonable fps.
For me 25-30fps are fine, of course in an online-shooter you maybe want 100fps to have no lag, but there the A10 is limiting, that is right.
So BF3 will play fine online, but only at 25-30 frames. CS of course runs at 100++ fps.
