Can anyone list steps needed to at least stop the throttling of the cpu? would be nice if it would at least run steady at 2.7ghz....I was watching my kid play bf3 and noticed frustrate drops while the cups constantly throttling down....240 pages are too many to read thru

btw he has win8 64bit....I have seen people mention success using win7....is it worth formatting and putting win7 to achieve this...oh and one last thing...any benefit trying the unlocked bios listed at MSI G-Series Unlocked BIOS .....not gonna bother trying that if it won't help

Only thing to do is play with the settings and have the latest drivers properly installed.

The Unlocked Bios will most likely brick your GX60 so stay away from that.
Also Win8.1 seems to do give a slight boost to AMD Cpus, so that maybe what does the most for us.

And also keep the CPU temperature in check...The cpu tends to throttle down at higher temperatures say 75deg...

Hey bud I've done some testing with the amd OD and it seems the CPU stepping works properly in windows 8.1.

I played my CPU intensive game Dragon's Prophet without OD and ended up with an average CPU clock with hwinfo64 of about 3.0ghz (A10-5750m) and with amd OD initiated properly after about 30 mins of game play my average was again around 3.0Ghz.

Ill do another test with maybe prime95 and see if there is any affect but sadly it seems there is nothing to be done.

Windows 7 we used PScheck to get us to 2.7ghz on all four cores on the 4600m but that was because in windows 7 they CPU didnt step properly.

Is 8.1 worth all the fuss installing it...vs just sticking with stock 8 until normal update comes out? sounds like it could be just placebo effect possibly? Whats everyone's thought? It's my kids laptop and he do't exactly live close by usually

Unless setting up PCs s your hobby I'd wait till the official release of Win8.1/when it's available as a Update.
If you use the preview now you will have to reinstall all apps and drivers, and then do the same when the actual release is out.

I have a question about my CPU temperature. Piriform Speccy usually shows the motherboard, graphics, and hard drive temperature to be 38 to 40 °C, but it always shows my CPU to 87 to 90 °C. CPU temperature seems to go down 1 or 2 degrees when I turn the fan to full speed, but the weird thing is, there is cool air being blown out. I just don't see how my CPU can be 90 °C when I am utilizing only 1 to 4 % according to task manager. Is Speccy accurate or is there a more reliable program to check out my CPU temperature? Thanks.

Fine CPU temp reading can be obtained via AMD's Overdrive software or CoreTemp. I've got the same ~100°C value when using HWMonitor, but i think this value could refer to CPU's mosfets (voltage controler).
Did any of you guys succeded to install the newest beta Catalyst drivers? Seems to be uncompatible with Win8.1...

Yeah they installed flawlessly, but there is a fix that was posted on guru3d which had you copy over I believe the drivers folder in packages from the latest 8.1 drivers.

I just downloaded the mobile version from them directly and no problems didn't even copy over anything.

AMD Catalyst 13.6 BETA 2 Download

I installed over my current drivers as usual.

HWInfo is better as Speccy doesnt handle AMD's way of reading temps right. (But hey, not even AMD does that all the time :p )

Hey all, I've been having issues downgrading to Windows 7 from 8.

Firstly, the USB ports on the left no longer function in Windows but still provide power. Is there a driver missing or did I mess something up in BIOS?

Secondly, the wireless radio soft button no longer functions (guessing because of the lack of SCM). Is there Win7 support for this at all?

I probably have more problems, but I don't know I have them yet.

I've read about it, but i don't get the logic to install newest version of the CCC to manage "older" driver package. The frame pacing option will be present in CCC but i'm not sure 13.6 drivers contains these optimizations. I'm still waiting for a new realease :)

Reading my CPU temp is a bit weird. Like I said, Speccy shows around circa 90 °C, then I installed CoreTemp, which shows circa 38 °C (same temp as the other devices). However, after I opened Speccy again, CoreTemp shows the same reading as Speccy, like Speccy somehow interfered with it. Closing Speccy doesn't correct CoreTemp's reading. So I installed HWiNFO64, and it shows "CPU 0" under "CPU" to be around 90 °C when idle, and circa 118 °C when running Skyrim.

The laptop does not feel hot, the air blown out and the bottom is not even that warm. So should I just ignore all the readings?

By the way, to fix the brightness issue after updating your graphics drivers. Change value data of KMD_EnableBrightnessInterface2 from 1 to 0

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001

(The fix linked to in this thread only mentions the first key, and that did not work for me.)

Thanks to A-10 5750m your fps will drop even lower! Prepare for 20 fps in many games.

You'll always see a drop in FPS when you're playing games multiplayer. The CPU has to work that much harder to make all the movement calculations. LoL is fairly old, and probably not optimized for newer CPUs. I think the recommended CPU is a single 3Ghz core, so you can see why a slower quad core might not work as well. All in all, you usually want to reduce the stress on the A-10 by lowering settings that will tax the CPU, like shadows for example.

While it's been said time and time again that CPU dependent games will be the GX60's kryptonite, I think that LoL is just a little outdated for newer hardware. I've noticed this on quite a few games actually. Even games much older than LoL.

hey guys ive been having a little problem for like 2-3 weeks now.
I've bought the laptop recently and played WoW and League of Legends nearly maximized with 60 stable fps all the time.
2 weeks ago I log into League and im getting 15-20 fps in game and I needed to change everything to low details but it was still dropping fps in fights.
Anyway as I am not really a computer maniac I went back to factory settings on my laptop and installed all drivers again and its still the same thing. I don't really know what to do now I clicked max performance/ set all things to high performance in CCC but my fps still drops as hell. Just now im waiting for my windows updates to install thinking it might possibly be the case..

This gaming notebook can barely play any games fluently with that CPU, so MMO's always kill it.

Please ignore the basher of the GX60, your problem sounds like perhaps a league and wow issue. I know that I played league on max everything with constant 60FPS I even had 100FPS when it was not locked. 5v5 everyone dropping all their skills and FPS wouldnt drop and it was flawless.

I'm playing Dragon's Prophet right now a really intensive CPU game and I get 35-45FPS with all the settings maxed out. This laptop is amazing because you can max out the Graphic's and just tone down CPU intensive things like shadows.

Unlike similar systems where you loose graphics quality also.

I was playing on 60 fps all the games for a month and even streaming all of them. Its just 2-3 weeks ago that it started to drop and I dont know why. I thought u guys could tell me how to get more fps out of my laptop like geting everthing maximized in my laptop itself.

Islo, It does sound like some setting or something has changed so you should be able to get your old performance back...
In order to figure out the culprit a good first step would be check to make sure the power button is orange not white (meaning you are using the 7970m and graphics will not bottleneck if white you need to change power settings for that application) and then while playing check on resource manager for what the CPU utilization is on different cores as well as using another program such as speccy to see what the cores are clocking to. On most games you should see your cpu utilization around 80-90% because it is our bottleneck if it isn't then maybe try increase LoL priority from task manager and the clock speed for a 5750m should average around 3Ghz if all cores are being used but if less are then it should hopefully clock even faster, if it's less than that then check your power settings, for instance CPU won't reach max on battery, it needs to be plugged into wall.

Hope we get to the bottom of your issues first step is figuring out whats causing the problem

Im sitting in the game now maxing everything as u suggested and still not getting more than 20 fps on high details. it feels like 7970m is not on though the power button is orange. used speccy and it says using all 4 cores 2,3 ghz each with around 100*C which bothers me a little. im using the addition fan now.. As for the CCC i cant even change anything with 7970. when I right click the CCC button on the right bottom corner of the screen i can only change my integrated Radeon HD 7660 graphics settings. Battery power is setup to max performance aswell. Any more ideas?

Try HWINFO to display in-game core speeds, as well as GPU usage. It's a great way to make sure your 7970m is actually working correctly. You should have all 4 cores running at 2.7Ghz.

If you use speccy, run it while you have LoL or WoW running in the background. If your CPUs are still running at 2.3Ghz, then turbo mode isn't being activated. As for the high temp, I think speccy's temps are off. Mine are showing at like 115C, yet HWINFO is showing them at about 67C.

Someone posted earlier that speccy does not read AMD temperatures correctly, I use HWINFO64 and it reports everything fine not sure if its been updated but before you had to have the 7970m running before turning on the sensors or it would just show the 7660g so if you get that problem that is your solution.

    A10-4600m
    Four Cores 2.7ghz
    Two Cores 3.2ghz

    A10-5750m
    Four cores 3.0ghz Average
    Two Cores 3.5ghz

Best of luck in figuring out your problem!

p.s i see this warning at some site when downloading PScheck : Warning: Tool could crash on certain UEFI enabled BIOS , maybe that the prob ?

You need to extract the latest drivers for 8.1 the 13.15 I believe, and copy the drivers folder under packages to the 13.8 beta 7 packages folder then install.

It pains me again to see how ruined 7970m is, by A-10 useless junk.

FPS dips to 18 FPS on regular basis in Far Cry 3... optimal settings (not ultra).

Botched model, stay away, destroy any units of it shown on display in shops, that you ever come across.

    Dear sirs,

I am running windows 8 and the brightness setting doesn't seem to work. Whenever I want to change the brightness, I go into the AMD vision engine control system to do so. By the way, the driver versions are 12.104.0.0 for both the 7660g and 7970m.

Its actually not recommended to use driver sweeper for AMD the drivers are designed to be installed over each other. If you're really worried they have a post on their forums about how to manually remove the traces of an old driver it is really quick and easy to follow.

Optimal settings on the GX60 actually set both Shadows and Post FX on Very High, which isn't ideal at all. Both of these should be either medium or low. Shadows are always a huge contributor of fps loss. You never want to set them too high. Post FX are also responsible for fps dips especially when looking out at the water.

As I suspected from the beginning, you try to play all these games using settings that aren't reasonable for a lower end CPU, and then you come on here complaining about low fps.

Or give it to my son. He would be happy with it and give it a good home! :) 50% of what you paid is more than you thought you would get.. I would go 55%, how is that?? :)

Setting shadows and post fx to low, doesn't help much, GPU utilization often doesn't exceed 60%...so much of 7970m juice is WASTED.
