7970@8970 FLASH
ALL YOU DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!
1. Downloadthe BIOS 8970m in this topic.
Wall
2. Save stock of 7970m(I use GPU-Z) bios in case something goes wrong and will have opotunity to flash in blind mode.
3. remove the drivers completely on 7970m.
4. Prepare USB fo flashing bios
5 Then put at USB Atiflesh 4.07, 7970 and 8970 bios...
6 Start Atifalsh.exe -p -f 0(this is number of Videocard, I used 0. Rom - I called the BIOS from 8970m New.rom and bios of 7970m old.rom
then will flash and the system must be rebooted...

Oh i forgot to ask if pscheck works on win8? Gotta know which oem i should get
-
@skidmarek
I think I noticed no boost vs stock.
@Mutilator
I am almost sure I have seen somewhere that some ppl ran pscheck at win 8 corectly but dont blieve me to much. Better research case to be sure cause many ppl still have probs with this app on win8 -
Hi Guys
i have a GX60-3BE (with windows 8) and i've locked the apu to 3.2ghz. using skidmarek method
The way the method works is you just limit the number of P-states the processor is allowed to use.
I use BAR-EDIT and AmdMsrTweaker to do this
as skidmarek wrote:
with BAR-EDIT (turbo mode unlock)
change
B0D24F3xDC clear bits 9 and 10
and then
B0D24F3xA8 clear bits 30 and 31
after with AmdMsrTweaker (or Pscheck)
you change the P-states
AmdMsrTweaker (to see all states)
AmdMsrTweaker [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]
AmdMsrTweaker P1
i ve nerver manage to have 3.5 Hgz everytime...
locked to 3.2 Ghz, i ve got 20/22 FPS in guildwars where i used to have 14/17 fps.
(sorry for my poor english level)
i 'm waiting for your comments.

Would really appreciate it if you can provide screenshot and highlight what you did....
-
Guys, I have been struggling with it for hours now, but couldn't update my bios. I tried everything msi writes there but my bios version is still the same. I prepared a bootable flash drive and did everything they said there but it didn't work. Can someone describe me the easiest way to update my bios in details? I'm a newbie and I would appreciate it if you detail everything in simple terms.
-
Thanks for the screenshot...makes more sense with Bar Edit now....
I seem to have difficulty changing 0DC bit 10 and 0A8 bit 31 to "0" though...they keep reverting back to "1".....
ended up with only 2 P-states disabled... -
Come on guys, help me out. There are many files in the update folder. Which one is the simplest and how do I do it?
-
(please delete this post)

i ve got the same issue after me laptop get into hibernate mode. i ve to power it off, and start it again
-
i 'm not sure that game will be more CPU intensive. Sony and Microsoft have choosen a full AMD solution for their console... buying a GX60 was for me a evidence. i think that futur game will be designed for AMD architecture (less FPU and more use GPU capabilities for physics)
question: a solution for making this f.... a10 lock to 3.5 ghz ?
-
I don't mean to kill the mood, but there is no point in the attempt to tweak this silly excuse for a CPU.
You are trying to squeeze more water out of a dry sponge, A-10 is so weak any 5-10% more power is barely noticable.
10% more out of i5/i7 is a big bang, but 10% more out of A-10 is just meh... -
Thanks everyone for putting your joint minds on the problem!
Feels like once we get the kinks worked out we've got ourselves a decent boost coming for free.
I'm sorry LisuPoland, I've managed to hold back commenting on your unconstructive comments for a while but this one just holds no weight.
Remember a lot of us have a 5750m vs your 4600m so that bottleneck has already been helped by 10%, add to that another 10% and playing with lowered cpu settings and high-maxed gpu settings, guess what... Were playing games with 90-100% GPU utilisation. To me I feel it's time for you to sell your gx60 just because it seems to be keeping you in a negative frame of mind which I'm sure is not your usual. We all realise that it has a shortcoming, that is why it cost (in my country) half of what the 7970m i7 combos do, if it performed the same for half the price then something would be seriously wrong.
You can keep posting how bad this laptop is in your opinion and it's good that people are aware of the shortcomings before buying, but I just feel like our time is better spent trying to make the best of the situation. The only thing that posting such negative statements accomplishes in the long run is to lower the resell value of the laptop you want to get rid of.
I send this in good faith, as a fellow brother from Poland. -

Awesome News Highwind85, Good work!
I'm in the process of further clarifying with Kenglish over here: MSI GX60 Laptop overclock
But taking a look at his instructions: "Undervolt can be done with AmdMsrTweaker or manually with MSR writes."
It appears he used it in order to undervolt his 4600m following the tweak which netted him more improvements (I've asked him for more details)
Can't wait to get this sorted on mine when I get a moment
@Highwind85, The steps have already been pretty well described however in order to get it to the level of the masses would you be able to post a step by step when you get the chance?
Also looking forward to benchmarks as to what this does in game which Kenglish said was over 10-15%! -
Ok...
Sorry, but that is BS, 90-100% GPU utilization - when you're looking at the sky in the game maybe... or at the wall from 1 meter distance...
You need newest gen Intel CPU to run this GPU with it's full glory, we can't bypass that by tweaking with BAR-EDIT (tried that a lot myself). -
I totally agree LisuPoland, You absolutely need a newest gen Intel CPU to not bottle neck this graphics card.
That doesn't change the fact that for me Farcry 3 with the right settings reports 90% GPU utilization, I get the same report from Planetside 2 when I'm anywhere that's not a zerg fest (which is a terribly cpu optimized game).
I'm just saying that you're treating it as though the 7970m is as good as a 650m with this "weakling" processor, but I argue that in the right games, at the right settings you do get benefits from having it.
Benchmarks show it too: Black Ops II, Battlefield 3, And Sniper Elite V2 - MSI GX60 Review: Radeon HD 7970M In A $1,200 Notebook!
At low graphics the gx60 manages frame rates that a laptop with a cheaper graphics card would get, But at those high-ultra settings in a AAA game, this laptop can keep up with much more expensive ones.
That's what I based my purchase on and that's exactly the performance I have seen. I too have had doubts but when considering changing the price of this laptop really puts it in a league with i7's that come with very poor graphics cards. We had a choice either bottle neck at CPU or GPU and have to make the most of our decision. I realize that you purchased early before the benchmarks were out so were buying on the faith you had in the company. I understand that it makes you feel cheated and no longer trust MSI for it. However, it's important to realize you were the one that took the gamble that this laptop would suit your needs. You lost the gamble because the laptop not well suited to your needs but those of someone that plays single player games and prefers Ultra graphics settings while being happy with 30 fps.
It may just be time to move on is all I'm saying, and let this forum be a place where people can work on getting the most out of the gx60 they own.
Thanks Lisu, hope I didn't include a line that you'll reject the entire post based on... -
fully agree
-
Okay so treading very carefully..
Your pictures Yaboss make finding the bits really easy:
so I swap I can swap the bit 9 and 10 and make them zero, then do I hit "write" and then "save"?
because when I click away and come back the bit 9 stays at 0 but bit 10 just goes back to 1.
It sounds like what you had Highwind. Care to clarify how you got around it?
Thanks, sorry I'm quite cautious around this because of my lack of experience
Edit: In addition to this I can't seem to make bit 9 go back to being 1? It doesn't seem to be listening very well, Please let me know what to do to make my instructions stick? -
Here is my before and after.
To get the changes sticking I just did a full shut down reboot and then just kept typing 0 "write", "save" and then if it didn't work swapping to 1 and back to zero and eventually I got all four to 0!
I'm sure there's a trick to it though, lets see how it effects in game -
great score in Cine 11.5
for exemple at 3.6 the A8-5550 ES was able to 3.00
i am not able to stabilize at 3.8 ( even if i put 1.288v... )
For information, the gx60 is CPU limited, everybody know ....
but with my experience and some test witth A8 5550 ES the gpu is always at 99% in every bench and game...
at stock between ( 65%-99% )
Fps Mini are acrease and ( the attached file is not the last i did )
PS: sorry for my anglish i am french

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
A few percent to the CPU score. -
Hey guys, So ironing out the locking at 3.2Ghz, Because cinebench is quite artificial anyone have measured frame rates from certain games?
To me it feels like the framerates are higher and more stable than I remember, 50fps farcry on mostly high (cpu settings low) was 25-40, Natural selection 2 for the first time I started seeing waiting for GPU instead of render thread! But when I run Bioshock infinite and Hitman absolution benchmarks I don't see any change. Not sure if that's because I'm not swapping between settings properly or what. Could someone do a 3d mark 11 to see if physics score improves at all?
One problem that I've just picked up is that when unplugged from the power I don't think the battery has enough juice to keep 4 cores at 3.2Ghz so it starts lagging just on desktop until plugged back in.. Guess it's something to be only toggled on when needed. -
So i installed the a8-5550M ES i bought and...... can't get the amd overdrive to work. keeps saying : can't detect cpu . Tried reinstall the driver and amd overdrive like 10 times . All with different approaches, any1 still has a suggestion for me ?
Btw i keep getting windows driver error for amd overdrive digital driver signing -
because the drivers is not reconize ???
you must force the installation
" bcdedit /set nointegritychecks ON " in execution command and restart the computer for install drivers
Windows 7: Installer un pilote non signé -
with Guildwar, i ve a huge increase of fps:
25 before and 40 fps now
in town with lot of players, i ve 20 fps now (i ve have 15 fps before)
it total war rome 2: it is still a slide show...
in starcraft 2, i ve spectacular raise of fps. -
Gonna try that tnoight, im using W8 but the commands should be the same though. Thanks !

3dmarks
no lock
P4773 with AMD Radeon HD 8970M(1x) and AMD A10-5750M
Graphics Score 6842
Physics Score 2540
Combined Score 2450
lock to 3.2 Ghz
P5199 with AMD Radeon HD 8970M(1x) and AMD A10-5750M
Graphics Score 6813 (!)
Physics Score 3105
Combined Score 2947 -
Here's mine...
Stock
Forced 3.2ghz
Catalyst 13.9 increases the GPU score again...about 200pts...no overclock on 7970m here...
Physics in 3dmark 11 doesn't see the same scale of improvement seen in cinebench....i've seen higher physics on 5750m lock to 3.2ghz with PScheck...(~3300)
@yaboss
Your stock physics score is a bit low...iirc that's about a10-4600m stock has... -
i benched my stock 4600M before and it had 4612 , so stock @yaboss score is a bit low yes
-
For those who still have issue with BAR-EDIT, the trick is to click on "write" after you move away from the intended bin...
so in the case of 0DC, after replacing bits 9 and 10 with 0, move to another bit before clicking "write"....The will be no change if the bit is highlighted.. -
have you a topic for BAR-EDIT?
-
do you have a idea to improve that ?
i ve change memory to 2*8 corsair 1833.
could it be the reason of the poor score ?
i ll try with pscheck (and after a cold start) . -
still cant overdrive to work
. kinda puzzled for this one
i think i am gonna use the renew to to boot windows to fabric installation..
Renew worked and now i have bsod about an memeory managment. Time for a full reinstall
-
only the stock score is low..your 3.2ghz locked score is similar to mine....
-
there is something wrong. At 3,5GHz dabidbobol reached 3700+ physic while you got 600 points lower.
-
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - AMD Eng Sample Mobile 2185_A1 ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16FK it getting better wth
Cinebench score 2.85 , 4600 was 2.20
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7192468 bit dissapointing
I ran from 3Ghz till 3.6GHZ en the scores went from 4910 to 5182 . mayb iam dealing with an driver roblem somewhere. gonna do a clean install tommorow and run some benchies again -
It's possible OS might have an effect...the higher scores I've seen were all done with PScheck on Win 7....
whereas we use BAR-EDIT on Win 8.... -
But should it really be 600points difference between OS? And pscheck does also work with my w8 so i could try that as well . But if cpu-z says it runs at 3.6ghz it shouldnt matter if i use pscheck or overdrive...
-
Yeah...but that's the main difference I see so far...a10-5750m locked with pscheck in win 7 seem to give better score too...abt 200pts difference in physics...
It could be the ES too...not sure how much variation from 1 ES to another ES... -
It's REALLY an OS "issue", 3dMark11 physics score is 10% lower on Win8, but nevermind because gaming performance is a bit better than 7, and that's the point of swapping APU. The rest of the missing points is due to dabidbobol more agressive ram timings.
I managed to change mine from 10-11-10-39 to 10-9-9-34 and won 89 more points on physics.
An other idea would be to compare scores from the newest version of 3DMark, that i think is more Win8-compliant! -
Msi should give us a bios with overclock ootions for these kind of proccessorsTax and Megatronche like this.
-
MSi should give us a refund, especially those who payed 100% initial release price for misleading us with "gaming sector" tag, false performance assurance in their ads and benchmark score posts.
But of course they won't, because they just don't give a Duck. -
Here's the comparison for 3dmark firestrike:
Catalyst 13.9
Stock
AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - AMD A10-5750M,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16FK
Forced 3.2ghz
AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - AMD A10-5750M,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16FK -
Why do we even use 3dmark11 btw
. Gonna run firestrike when iam home
-
does somebody have try this tweak bios
MSI G-Series Unlocked BIOS ? -
I believe someome tried and trashed his gx60...
-
as I remember I have tried to flash this bios. dont remember exactly if I flashed but the conclusion is the one - I dont have. if I flashed then there werent any features that were better then oryginal bios that I already own. or there was a something wrong while flashing causing no way to flash properly. just dont flash it ;p
