Hey Meaker, I just wanted to say thanks for putting out the information on changing to a backlit keyboard. I sent an email to my xoticpc sales rep, and they're looking into it. Hopefully by the time they get their shipment in I'll know if they can add the backlit keyboard. I actually sent them the link with your screenshot, too. So, thanks again.

Heh, I like trying crazy stuff :) Glad I could help move things forward.

In other news I tried putting a clevo 680M into the machine, I wanted to see if it would at least boot and show the two devices in device manager. The machine just black screened me and I did not even get a boot logo, nor was it loading behind it (keep in mind the machine will run without a graphics card in it) so it seems like a total no go to put an nvidia card in there. (The 680M tests and works fine in its original machine).

Anyone happen to know about a program that can tell me what type of screen the MSI GX60 comes with stock? Trying to get a higher grade gamut screen.

Any system software information program (aida64 for example) can show detailed information about the panel.

Does anyone have Vsync issues with their games? I've tried turning on Always sync in the ECC control panel but Batman Arkham City and Crysis 2 still have screen tearing even though Vsync is on also in their respective game settings.

A note to those asking for GW2 benchmarks, I have never played before so you are going to have to give me settings and then areas you want to see and they have to be easy places to get to.

PvP and WvW zones should do nicely.

While doing the "Lost Shore" event at Lions Arch I was getting around 15 FPS on Auto-Detect (Pretty High settings) and around 10 FPS on Best Appearance with a crap load of people doing the even this morning on Sea of Sorrow server. Also this was with stock drivers. Sorry if this is not much help, but I have no idea how to test for this stuff the right way.

If you want anything remotely comparable I need an exact location and settings, it could be anywhere to get a comparison, but obviously with limited time I can only do so much.

Meaker, WvW is the hardest thing in this game for any computer, its is really cpu intensive. So if you could go to WvW and play in zerg fights, that would be awesome. I really want to know how it handles in large battles. Also if you could play with the settings for getting atleast 30+ fps in large WvW battles.

    Thanks in advance! :D

Heading back home from school tomorrow, and I'll order my gx60, though I'm in a dilemma who I should order it from, Gentech is like 30min from my house, which mean I'll get it quick, but the tax..... killing me...if I order from xoticpc I'm not sure if I should mail it to my house or my school... depends if it'll get there within a week...

I got another question. The sound on this laptop is it the same as the gt series? also can you modify your sound equalizer to enhance your sound in games for better hearing? Will be using with headphones mostly so the speakers not that worried about but be nice to be able to modify your sound with the headphones.

Can anyone here tell me how to get this laptop to boot from a CD? I gone in the BIOS and its already set to boot up from CD before HDD, so no change was needed. I used F11 key but the CD was not an option as a bootable device. I’m trying to make an image to transfer to my SSD.

Would you recommend getting a notebook cooler for when your gaming on this machine or does it stay cool on its own? If you do recommend a cooler which one would you suggest to get?

How did you get your Kingston ram to work on this laptop? I installed them and the timing is off, I was not able to go into the BIOs and adjust it to the correct timing,

I use Zallman NC-2000 cooler, but even without it the notebook cools down the HD 7970m pretty well. So no worries.

Still, having a cooler is better, than not.

I have programmed them manually, but 1600mhz kingston should run at its rated speed.

I have found coolers make no difference to msi machines when on a flat desk.

Sorry for all the questions but i really can't see this model in store but im almost positive going to get it just was wondering about the sound with the headphones if you could change the settings of it to enhance certain sounds. On my desktop i can do it with my creative sound card for games just curious if the msi laptops has any programs that lets it do it for its sound.

Ok, now that I've installed more games I'm noticing that none of the games will have V-sync on either from the setting in game or through external programs like D3Doverider and Radeon Pro. Anybody else have this problem or is it just my computer? Tried Batman Arkham City, Crysis 2 and Resident Evil 5 so far. I know the games work because I also have an MSI GT683 with an Nvidia 560 card. Those games V-sync flawlessly.

I had this problem once, looks like a normal problem of AMD Drivers,i'm waiting for a WHQL version of Catalyst 12.11.
My biggest problem now is sometimes when i run a few progams at the same time(for example BF3,Fraps,AMD System monitor),the screen freezed and i had to press power button to shut down.It happens when use 7970M as it shows orange light. It annoys me nearly once a day.

I can't play Battlefield 3 fluentl. At outdoor complex scenes,I can only got 20fps average .it's strange that reducing the graphics settings do no help to increase fps.
Anyone know Why?Is there something wrong with my GX60?
    Thanks in advance.

Looks like your integrated GPU runs the game, not the dedicated HD 7970m.

Does your power button give white or orange color when you run BF?

I'm browsing through a mobile browser so I cant check all 29 pages currently. But has anyone took apart the gx60 yet. I was trying to figure out so I liked at reviews of a similar gt60 but the reviews said the only thing maintainable is the battery. For example I may want to upgrade memory or upgrade to all SSD or faster HDD. Pictures would be helpful

    Do you run BF3 fluently?
Sure it's orange color and HD 7970m runs. And the CPU utilization is 100%,GPU utilization is 50%-70%(recording with AMD System Monitor).I can run sleeping dogs quite fluently,so it 's strange .Does A10 really hold back 7970m or there's something wrong with my GX60?

I don't have BF3. Never played it (yea, such people do exist).
But I'm sure HD 7970m should run it great on ultra. I aslo know BF3 has good optimalization for AMD CPU's, so our quad core A-10's should run it well.

Do you have adaptive multi-AA or Supersample AA set in CCC? try to turn of V-sync and fiddle with other settings. If it's supersample, then tune it down to adaptive.

So way BF3 should run like it does on your GX60. It looks more like it's running on GT630m for you hah, impossible for Hd 7970m.

Have you tried the (so far) newest Catalyst 12.11 beta 8 drivers?

I fixed the v-sync issues with the latest Beta 8 drivers. Now I am also experiencing slow FPS in a lot of my games. Assassin's Creed 3 slows to maybe 10-15fps when in the forest. But when I point the camera down and start moving, it jumps to at least 60fps or over. My light is orange so it is using the Dedicated graphics card. What's funny is that when I configure a game like Sonic Generations, its graphics card choice is 7660g and not the 7970m. Don't know if that is an issue.

Sometimes even updating drivers is something people have to get good at. Making sure the old ones are all gone before installing the new. I like to install drivers manually through the device manager. And then making sure the settings are still good if you reinstall CCC. And you have to use the drivers made for switchable graphics.

When gaming everyone should lock the CPU in turbo mode.

AMD seemed to cancel their Kaveri update with Steamroller, which is bad, but might be able to drop the new Piledriver variants from 2013 into this notebook. If they are 28nm and use more efficient GCN, then might squeeze higher frequency out of the same cores at 35W.

AMD Denied that... I think AMD will release at least 2 more x86 high power platforms (Steamroller and Excavator)... maybe by 2015, ARM architecture will be very important in AMD strategy.

    Do you have a source?

I read a recent article along those lines at semiaccurate but the writer was proven wrong with direct contact from AMD. Kaveri and all the other big core projects have not been canceled and are on schedule.

I have not seen that official AMD denial or retraction of the articles all over the web pointing to delayed Steamroller. I would love to see a press release with the latest roadmap confirmed. So you expect Kaveri to be released at CES in a few months?

That would be very welcome news, although makes me want to wait another 5 months or so for a Kaveri notebook.

Wow, you got the physics score up over 10% from the original benches, what timings were you able to get it to run at? Like 8-9-8-24? Assuming youre using 4GB modules.

What kind of RAM did it come with, and its specs? I am hoping that MSI at least put CL9 1600 RAM in there.

    Thanks for all the info

The source, From Fudzilla, to the same SemiAccurate; It looks like Charlie Demerjian (Article Autor) is a Little AMD hater, and post false information, In several blogs is considered he is losing credibility.

Hope soon see Kaveri demostrations :D

It came with 1600 CL11 modules which are SPD locked :(

I fitted it with 1600mhz Hyper-X modules and programmed them to 8-8-8-18 1600mhz and did some serious work on the sub timings too.

can you please try Guild Wars 2 WvWvW on the GX60? that's the part of the game that takes the most CPU processing due to many players being on screen at the same time.
All you have to do is create a character, complete the tutorial level, and press "B" on your keyboard to go to World vs World.
Then, find a group to run with, and siege a castle or something.

I'm on the fence between getting this laptop or a clevo machine... mainly upgrading to play GW2 :D
Been hearing that the game's CPU intensive, however, so I'm afraid the A10 would bottle neck the otherwise great rig.

    Thanks very much!

Thank You, do you think there would be any benefit having 16GB of 1600 CL9 RAM?

And I still wonder if AMD is planning an FS1r2 socket APU refresh in 2013. The rumors about 28nm Richland Piledriver APUs probably stem from somewhere, like disgruntled notebook makers that want to be able to keep the same notebook platform, motherboards, chipsets and just drop in a new APU that does a little better. Like AMD's own cheap line, vs the new "high performance" Kaveri line. Wouldn't that be refreshing, for AMD to have a distinction like that in a processor lineup.

I placed the order for mine a few days ago, upgraded the RAM to 2x8 1600/PC3 (nasty habit of keeping 216 chrome tabs open).

Also, a few questions I can't seem to find anywhere. How is the touchpad? I mean, I will most likely use it with a mouse most of the time, but I read some other MSI laptops do not have zoom, gestures and the such. Is it also true for this one? First MSI laptop, son don´t know what to expect.

Bought as a portable desktop (kind of Oxymoron) but that is what I inted to use it for. It would be awesome if someone could upload more videos of hands-on gaming and general usage, not just FRAPS footage, specially the Eyefinitiy technology in some kind of How-to.. there doesn't seem to be many of those around.

I've not tried to use my ethernet port so far, but today i did and every time i connect it to my wired network, windows simply BSOD's. I run windows 7 64bit and have the latest drivers from killers website. Seems very odd to me.

Any one else had the same issue?

I'd try the latest set from the MSI website.

16GB only if you need it, 8GB at the tightest possible timings would perform better.

I just ordered my gx60 so when i get it and if your still looking and no one else has done it for you i will test it out for you. Although i do recall someone saying they tried it in this forum and says it runs fine but I am not sure about the wvw part of it. It will probably be a couple weeks though until i get it.
