Since I've already transferred all my data to an external, I did a clean install and it pegged at 100 soon as it was back up.
Edit: I don't have a thermometer, but it seems to be running quite hot as well.
-
Use task manager and see which program is chewing up the cpu usage? it's just not normal to have 100% at idle..
-
As of right now, avg virus scan and network services are bouncing between 17-80 cpu pull, currently running another virus scan just because. Only using about 28% of my ram.
-
Hey, listen i have the a10 locked @ 3.2 and don't know why but when you disable the dx11 features of bf4 the lag is gone... do a youtube search and make a cfg file that disables the the dx11 shizzz. After i did that the game was running pretty well!!
-
Thanks. After the 2nd update (50mb) the game runs very well. At 3.5GHz I can play at res full HD with all at ultra and its really playable.
-
Hey super owl, just tossing up whether to buy it now, wait for release or wait for mantle.. Can you give us some numbers of what fps ranges you're getting on your 5750m with those settings?
Cheers -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Some DX11 features require more CPU time too. -
Yo, not sure what the frames and all that is but IMHO I pre ordered cuz its cheaper with added goodies and I think the frames must be 35-40+ else it wouldn't have felt playable to me.. planetside 2 on the other hand still unplayable... sigh whish mantle could've been here last year already and most high spec engines running it.
-
You can check with fraps and let us know how low its dropping because 10fps can make the difference between playable and competitive, ie bf3 is playable but you're in an uphill struggle.
Initially I gave up without trying planetside 2 because of what people said however I find it very much playable.. I get 60fps in low population areas, 30-40fps for most moderate fights, dropping (as with seemingly everyone) to 20fps at zerg fests. Waiting till end of this month when they release the first of a few major optimisation patches designed to help slow multi core CPUs!
It seems that with mantle and games being optimised for the new consoles slow cpu clock speeds our laptops might actually manage this generation okay!
Kaveri would just be the cherry on top -
enabled fps in game looks like avg 30+ but go as low as 25 very much playable actually I enjoy playing there is no shrugging or spikes and rem bf4 is the first mantle game to be released and its still in beta things might go well for a change
-
Hi guys, I really want an a8-5550m ES if anyone wants to sell or direct me to a seller it would be much appreciated! cuz that APU OC'd actually will turn the gx60 into a proper gaming machine able to run cpu intensive games aswell.

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Not the sort of trading NBR likes on here
-
Waiting for my order phase to change (hoping my order phase will change).

Definitely not a legal thing to trade ES. -
Sorry didnt know :<

Just saw this. Seems pretty unlikely Kaveri will be able to fit the GX60 motherboard which is a shame. Whether or not I'll by the Kaveri version of the GX60 will probably depend on how big of a boost Steamroller is and how they'd end up pricing it. If Mantle can boost Piledriver enough I mightn't even consider upgrading.
In other news I'm installing the Catalyst 13.9 WHQL as it is official Windows 8.1 support which is arriving tomorrow I think. Hopefully 13.9 has proper screen brightness control. It's broken in 13.10 betas which is why I went back to 13.8 beta 2.
Actually I might give the new 13.11 beta a go first -
Well guys, I got cold feet about the amd setup. Went with the force 1757 (ge70barebones).
I wanted windows even, and considering the amount of Netflix I watch, the 17" screen was too tempting. As I've scoured around for reviews and pics besides the MFG ones. There's hardly any information, other than one review I found that sold me on it. I plan on doing a full review with in depth pics if anyone wants.
I'd like to note that Derek S @ xotic has been more than accommodating and helpful at every turn. -
I'm sorry sniffin but that is nothing new, we have known for months that desktop kaveri will require FM2+ socket and have no backward compatibility.
On the other hand there has been no specific word about mobile kaveri socket requirements so there's still a small but real chance they'll use similar pins and it be atleast partially compatible (limited functionality).
Just thought I needed to clarify, nothings changed either one way or the other -
AMD has been very mum about the mobile variant of Kaveri. Even the leaks about Kaveri are only from the desktop chip. About the only two things known for sure are: A.) There will be a mobile variant, and B.) It will launch after the desktop part ships. Guessing you'll see them in hand sometime around March to June 2014.

I just saw this deal Newegg.com - MSI GX Series GX70 3BE-007US AMD A-Series A10-5750M(2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 17.3" Notebook Windows 8 and decided to post it here even though it is a GX70. But it is $1100 right now with rebate and it is the Higher end model with A10-5750M, 8970M, Blu-Ray drive, and backlit keyboard.
-
I have recently seen some early desktop Kaveri benchmarks but sadly can't remember where. These were only productivity benchmarks though and even then it performed similar to a Core i5 2500k and considering that neither Ivy Bridge nor Haswell improved much on the performance of Sandy Bridge that's some great news. Consumer applications should run better on it though due to being less floating point heavy. Now if only AMD do the same for mobile version and if it is power efficient enough it would have no problem outperforming dual core Haswell i7s.

Good Evening.
I was fortunate enough to recently win this laptop and now want to know what can I do to get the most out of it.
I won the MSI GX60 Hitman Edition
CPU: AMD A10-5750M
VGA: AMD Radeon HD 7970M / 2GB DDR5
It is currently running windows 8. Should I update to Windows 8.1?
Also how would I perform a clean install of windows without any of the added junk like nortons?
I heard about CPU locking. What is this about and is there a benefit to doing it? Does it cause harm to the computer?
I am excited to finally have a nice computer to play games on. -
Sell it right away, don't even open it, just sell it as new boxed product, with luck you will get ~1000$
Then, if you only can, throw in some more money to afford GT60 - much better combination of hardware, than GX60. -
Lol, LisuPoland is back! ...
Hey Randomwalsh, welcome to the forum and congratulations on winning one =)
Don't pay too much attention to Lisu he's our resident hater because his budget gaming laptop doesn't do everything that a top line one does. In its price range this laptops GPU blows anything out of the water, however this is only possible thanks to the AMD apu which though the best they have doesn't match up to Intel's i5/7, So you sacrifice CPU for GPU, works well in some games but not for others.
That said read through this forum and make up your mind about the gx60 as he said, if you only love playing mmo's or games like Rome this laptop may not be for you and a i7 lappy would serve better. If on the other hand you enjoy fps' and single player games, and love cranking settings to ultra and happy with 30-40 fps (as opposed to craving 80fps even if it means low settings) then this might be the perfect laptop for you!
I've tried educating Lisu on this but we've all given up at this point..
So your questions, in regard to windows 8 vs 8.1, I actually came on to ask the same question!
For what changes to make to run your gx60 optimally:
1. up to date drivers/CCC
2. Set CCC CPU settings to max performance
3. Un park cores
4. Using BAR-edit make changes described to prevent cores clocking below 3.2ghz
5. Using AmdMsrTweaker reduce voltages as described previously
6. Learn what game settings are CPU intensive (usually shadows among others) set to low, other settings can usually sit at high-ultra
7. Learn about and look forward to the "Mantle API" because it may prove to be a god send for this laptop!
I can dig through and find the pages I referred to above but in all honesty I highly recommend sitting down and reading through the last 50-75 pages to learn about the laptop (you'll understand people like Lisu better as well and may even agree with him).
I for one, love my laptop and look forward to how it will perform into the future =)
Best of luck mate
P.S. from memory, users that tried reinstalling/changing OS ran into numerous problems with failing to boot/missing drivers so I'd recommend just uninstall programs and hide what ever bloatware is left -
He said he wants to get the most out of it, not sell it and spend $500
-
Here: AMDFX: Kaveri Benchmarks Revealed! AMD Kaveri's GPU is R5-N200
I'm throwing out an estimate that if the mobile variant translates, the GPU will see a 2.7x increase, maybe get a GFLOP around 1.1GLOPS on the APU. -
I am with Lisu here , sell it and for 200 euro extra you can get an alienware/whitebook vendor laptop . Which could be upgraded later
-
Where you gonna get a gt60 equivalent for 1200?
-
So I have the A8-5550M ES and am using AMD overdrive. I have it OC'ed to 3.2 GHZ and am happy with the results. However, I understand there is still some more untapped potential to overclock a little more and still remain within safe temps at 100% load on the both the GPU and CPU at the same time in my GX60.
What utility should I use to OC the APU further and to what frequency is stable? I understand that above 3.2 or 3.3 voltages need to be adjusted, and I'm not really sure of how to do this. Does anyone have any figures as to what is safe and stable with this machine? -
Also got my A8-5550M ES and clocked it to 3.4 Ghz. 1st result 3dmark11: Generic VGA video card benchmark result - AMD Eng Sample Mobile 2185_A1 ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16FK
-
I'd play with those settings a little MonkNL because my a10-5750m locked at 3.2Ghz (not over clocked) managed this:
People with A8-5550M ES should be able to guide you how to get it working properly because their scores were much higher than my 5750m.
P.S. Just installed the 13.11b drivers and got a free 200-300 boost in my graphics scores!
-
Just came back from a working trip so didn't had the time to look into it further. Hopefully can manage to get some free time this weekend..
-
Set it to 3.6Ghz and 1.18v Generic VGA video card benchmark result - AMD Eng Sample Mobile 2185_A1 ,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16FK
Going to update my drivers also now. -
So 3.6 is stable and wouldn't burn up if say I played rome 2 total war for a few hours?
Also, what program do you use to set voltages? Amd overdrive doesn't allow changes to voltages. -
Bro, AMD Overdrive is the program which changes voltages. My A8 is running 3.4GHz in 24/7 service with no heat issues at all, rarely exceed 72C.
-
Hey guys
Windows 8.1 was officially released several days ago now.
Can anyone confirm that the update went without a hitch on their gx60? In particular any problems with drivers, laptop buttons or tweaks such as baredit or undervolting?
There has to be someone that's tried it..
Thanks in advance -
I upgraded a few days ago and nothing was broken. All I had to do was reinstall Catalyst drivers as they were wiped by the install (though CCC was left in place).
-
I use for OC A8 ES those settings:
3.2GHz - 1.1V
3.5GHz - 1.181V
3.6Ghz - 1.2V
3.7Ghz - 1.212V
For me thats work stable. Temperatures at 3.7 are not breaking more then 91 degree. Also notice that 1.212V is most that can be done stable for A8 ES (my researches). Improove is huge. The clock rate I use is according to the game needs. For me 3.5GHz is most used at fps games. For other I OC to 3.2. -
Here is my best run 3Dmark Firestrike
A-5550m ES 3.8 Ghz @ 1.225v
Hd7970m core @ 952 , volts (1.000v) and memory stock
On my cpu curently the limit is 3.8GHz.I can manage 3.9 but cant run firestrike with that clock (computer crashes)

Nice benches Col100, pushing that baby to the limit!
I notice you got a nice 7970m overclock on there aswell, if you get the chance would you mind giving us a step by step on how you got there (or the guide you used) I tried with afterburner but gave up eventually..
On an interesting note I found this:
Windows 8.1 Makes AMD's APUs Faster | SemiAccurate
Basically a performance boosts of an extra 4-5% in the 6800k just by going 8.1!
When I find the bandwidth I'll try and do a controlled before and after to see if get a similar surprise! -
I OC the HD7970m with MSI Afterburner v 3.0.0.1504 Beta
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner and open a CFG file named MSIAfterburner with notepad scroll down to :
[ATIADLHAL]
UnofficialOverclockingEULA = 1
UnofficialOverclockingMode = 1
UnofficialOverclockingDrvReset = 1
AccessibilityCheckingPeriod = 0
UnifiedMemoryUsageMonitoring = 1
and try the exact values you see here.
And the next trick is really simple but i havent found any other solution to this other than start some application/game that uses the hd7970m when the led is orange THEN start MSI afterburner, it should be showing current core clock and memory clock from there you just move the slider at will. When the led is white MSI afterburner doesnt show anything.
My max stable clock on the core is 980 MHz i just havent figured out a way to change the volts on gx60 hd7970mKevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can also tell CCC to make msi afterburner a high performance application I think.
-
Does not work for me (orange LED lights up only for a moment). I have to otherwise enforce the 7970 to action .
-
Hey all. First off, thanks for the help with overclocking, it has helped a ton.
On a bad note, I've had issues with windows 8.1 on my gx60 since I installed it today. It tends to run slowly and I really had to mess with my amd drivers to get them working correctly... I have an overclocked a8-5550m es. After continuous reinstalls I finally got things sorted out but the desktop still runs slowly. For a while my 3d mark 11 scores dropped from about 5230 down to 3000 even when the CPU was overclocked to 3.6.
Apps seems to run again ok now once they boot up and my score is back up to around 5230.
However the benchmark in rome 2 total war staggers at 15 fps when before I updated it I was in the 30s. I have no clue what's up.
Any advice would be awesome. In the meantime, stay away from windows 8.1. -
Alright found a way to change voltage on hd7970m.found this : VBE7 - vBIOS Editor for Radeon HD 7000 series cards - techPowerUp! Forums
i used VBE7.0.0.7b.exe
best result so far core 1002 MHz, memory 1400 Mhz @ 1.025 v .Thats 0.025 over stock volts.
3dmark Firestrike :
All credits for the utility go to techpowerup.com forum user darkhmzKevin@GenTechPC likes this. -
Hi Col100 nice score, how did you oc your apu? I understand how you got you 7970m to the 1Ghz bur how did you get to 3.8 ghz with your APU? which program did you use?
Sorry see now that you have a A-5550m ES APU and not the standard 5750m -
I have a small request.Could someone who has an HD8970m in stock save their vbios via GPU-z and post it?
Thanks -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Best score I've ever seen on such platform!! :thumbsup:Col100 likes this. -
Oh wow I'm gonna get on this
edit: My default bios seem to indicate that the default VID for mine is 1075mv even though every program reports it as 1000mv
Is this vdroop or what? I'm sort of worried if I use 1025mv it'll actually be like 950mv and it'll crash
