Sorry for being a noob. But can someone please guide me through on how to lock the A10-4600m @2.7GHz? I don't want to do something stupid and stuff the laptop up. Thank you. GX-60-1AC with Windows 8.

Try flashing the stock bios and then going back up to the higher speed. Make sure you use the same bios file as before.

Makes me wonder even more, why AMD locked these puny CPUs up... Overclocking them heavily seems to mitigate their weak architecture...

Hi, I'm a bit surprised no one has answered this. Maybe it is something everyone else knows? Anyway, I've never heard of the power-plans killing hard-drives by turning them off when not in use. I think it's more likely to prolong the hard-drives life, while also saving power and keeping laptop noise to a minimum.

As for your HDDs specs you can download a diagnostics tool from WDs website, but I also think a tool like piriforms "Speccy" will get you the information.

If I am right in assuming that you had to set up your computer again with the new HDD, then there are a few things the laptop will do in the background on a "new" system. In win 8 for instance, all unused language files are uninstalled after setup. That is murder on the Hard-drive, and you might even experience lockups like you described. Worse still is the time it takes to restart your laptop while this is going on.

Hi, turning the Hdd on and of is vad for it. The magnetic plates is unaffected but the electrical parts takes the beeting. The worst part for your pc is start up. Now if you repeat that 5-6times perday you can expect a short life span

Guys, thank you both for the replies. I'm terrified of the idea of sending the laptop to technical service one more time for about a week if the HDD fails again. I also disabled the Fast Starting option in windows 8, thinking that it might be something else which damages the HDD. But a google search did not confirm that idea. I'm completely dependent on my laptop everyday and I use it for about 15 hours daily; nearly half of that for gaming.

After I turned off the fast starting option, there remains only one thing that causes the HDD light to be constantly on. When I leave my laptop unused for a few minutes, the Windows 8 Process Center starts working silently I believe (but I have no idea what exactly it is doing), and that causes my HDD light to be constantly on until I touch the mouse. Do you have any suggestions guys? I appreciate any answer. Thanks in advance.

Other than Windows Defender, I only use Zemana Antilogger, which is not an antivirus, but just an anti logger. I had used it with my old laptop as well, without any problems. So, I don't think that's the reason.

Thats the "maintenance" W8 does at idle. I use quotes because whatever it does seems useless. I disabled that completely (don't remember how but there are guides out there so google it), and I have had no problems with the OS. Ive been using this same install since I got my GX60 (April) and haven't noticed any problems as a result of turning it off.

I have the GX60-1AC as well (got it roughly in February), and the latest beta works pretty well, if not just a tad better than the last. However, I get about 40-45 fps on average for Battlefield 4 on Ultra, with one or two fps drops playing the entire campaign. All in all, the beta hasn't given me any reason not to use it and revert.

Okay, so, I guess second post here on the forums, because I just answered somebody, but I have an MSI GX60 1AC, (A10 4600M, 7970M), and on stock everything, the 7970 is hitting temperatures that are a tad worrying, I was going to try and overclock it, but it seems like a bad idea when its hitting ~93C from stress tests that you can do with MSI Kombustor. I haven't seen it go past that temperature, and it says it isn't throttling it at all, but thats a really high temperature in my mind. I was wondering if that's just me worrying too much, or if that is definitely a problem. I dont see it get that high in real-world applications, like Battlefield 4 I mentioned in the post above. Those hover around high 80's. Maybe repasting would be a good idea? Ive dusted it out (it had some buildup, but just as much as I would expect since the beginning of the year, not all that much), but that also means Ive tampered with the warranty sticker over one of the screws, so I dont know how accepting MSI is about that. Any ideas for the tad worried?

~85C is normal for 7970m in stress, you do not need to worry.

Also don't OC the 7970m - it is pointless on bottlenecked GX60. The only benefit will be showed in benchmark scores, but in-game this will yeld no improvement since stock 7970m is already kept back by the CPU.

No point in making your GPU run hotter, if this does not improve the FPS in games.

Is the Mantle support patch for BF4 out already or those are your results without Mantle?

As long as you don't physically damage components, MSI will still honor your warranty.

Repasting is a good idea. I did mine with MX-4 and at stock I was hitting 80-85c in games. I've since flashed an undervolted bios as I never saw utilization above 80-90%, and now the 7970M tops out at anywhere between 72-78c depending on the game (750MHz @ 0.95v, no performance loss).

I would advise against those stress tests. They do noting but make your GPU way hotter than it will ever normally get. 93c is not a nice temp.

    @Lisu: no Mantle yet

Well then prepare for a nice boost! Mantle is supposed to give ~20% more FPS with no graphical quality loss.

If you get 40-45 FPS on multiplayer already, then Mantle should boost your FPS to ~50-55 area - and that is really not only playable, but also enjoyable.

That's true, I was just hoping to *see* if it was possible, especially since from what I understand, if you get a hold of the A8 ES, it fits nicely and overclocks well, or at least go to the A10 5750 to loosen the bottleneck at least a little bit.
