Someone tried to load a modified BIOS on his GX, but bricked his system.
AFAIK there is no unlocked BIOS for GX.

Sold my GX60 with the SSD and with an A10-5750M cpu. Will sell my A8-5550M ES via ebay, thanks for the response!
-
I ask to give the reference to ebay to a8 es version.

I would argue that MSI should continue with the GX Series but switch out the dedicated GPU with higher speed DDR3 2133 memory and run on the integrated GPU. In this configuration it would help lower the cost and improve efficient use on the integrated GPU, rather than a higher cost with a dedicated GPU that will be bottled neck by an application that is purely CPU bound.
I will agree that the current setup doesn't fit well, and as much as I am still leaning towards a kaveri laptop, its not going to be a miracle cure for every problem that the current series of AMD APUs have. -
I really don't understand the criticism behind the GX60. There are tons of notebooks with strong CPUs and weak GPUs out there in the same price range as the GX60.
If you want a strong cpu and weak gpu, buy an Intel laptop.
If you want a strong cpy and strong gpu, prepare to pay alot more money.
MSI is simply giving you another option (weak cpu strong gpu). Those of you saying they should drop the GX series, why not just buy something different next time? All you're asking for is less options for consumers. If you aren't happy, buy something else, its really that simple.
And if you weren't aware of what you were buying beforehand, thats on you. There are so many ways to educate yourself about products thanks to the internet, that anybody caught by surprise is flat out lazy. -
You are talking in regard of current prices of GX series witch (in my opinion aswell) fit it lot better.
The release date prices were too high for the bang you were getting. 30-50% higher depending on the model.
Another mysterious thing about GX60 is that this setup would work almost the same for ex. with HD 7870m inside instead of HD 7970m. Since the performance would have been the same and MSi wanted to lower the price of GX series as much as possible, why did they put 7970m in there witch losses 50% of it's capability, when HD 7870m would have been sufficient and cheaper in delivering basicly the same performance with A-10 in pair... This would have made GX indeed a rather balanced budget gaming setup and a lot more units would have been sold in my opinion. -
If you can watch this video LisuPoland a greeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KnQ6vAgL9I
-
@Lisu
please. I know you payed well for this lappy but its your own case. I payed too 30% higher the actual prices but all I can say that we suck. I was aware that the laptops will disappear in shops so I buyed it overpriced.
According to mentioned 7870m. You are wrong. If they did that this lappy would be a piece of sh*t. Now I can rely on the graphic performance while the game demand that. If there is 7870m I would rely on something working like a 500$ lenovo with many driver issues. -
Nice, any idea how to get this unlocked BIOS?
-
which can be unblocked with MSI enable:

links removed by misuse of some. -
The problem with that is the difference between the 7870M and 7970M is really really big. BF4 runs really nice on a GX60 maxed out, with a 7870M it wouldn't. The 7870M is based on Cape Verde, which is literally half a Pitcairn. Now, if the GX60 had a Bonaire (7790/260X desktop) GPU in it for a couple of hundred bucks less, that'd be nice but I wouldn't want a 7870M personally.

Thanks for the comments - I haven't been able to get back to trying to reinstall Minecraft - kiddo got the laptop and immediately started in playing RollerCoaster Tycoon3. Ran that no problems (on the apu), but its a 10 year old game.
I did a ton of research going in, and I'm very aware about what this system is, and to be honest, there's not much out there in this price range that compares with it for most gaming (got it for 900-ish). You give up something or other no matter which way you go. The only real competitors imo are the Lenovo y510p and I also found an Asus that was on the shortlist N550JV-DB72T. With the Asus, you get i7, but 750m graphics card which hurts it, but you gain touchscreen if that matters. With the Lenovo, you can get the same i7, but the 750 is a dual/SLI setup. I'd have gone that route, but I read through a lot of complaining about the SLI/stuttering, and build issues.
Anyway, I know Minecraft is kind of its own thing, and sometimes runs poorly on systems with great specs. Its a 3d game running for the most part in Java for christ's sake, which is kind of ridiculous in its own right.
I'll likely lock in the CPU speed, although I'm not clear that either of the software suggestions Lisu gave actually works in windows 8 - looks like most people agreed on Bar Edit though. If the AMD solutions work, I'd obviously prefer to use them if possible, but in going back & re-reading, I never found a solid "yes" for either.
Once I'm able to get it up & running decent, I'll post back on what I've done. The various minecraft forums reference this laptop a lot, but are full of little squeakers & not much advice... -
Seems legit, but there is no link in the topic?
Nobody seems to have re-uploaded it aswell, so where to download this utility? -
I too would like this utility to try.
-
MSI Enabler
MSI_Enabler.rar (4,29 KB) - uploaded.netshades_aus and raul-77 like this. -
Thank you for that!.
Works a treat on my GX60 A10-5750M / 8970M GPU, now to carefully play with some settings :->
oh yeah, windows 8.1 x64 (Ran as Administrator) -
Could you post a mini-tutorial how to properly install this MOD?
-
It's really simple. Extract the file, read the text file for disclaimer, use at your own risk etc etc... then right click on the binary and select run as administrator.
Once you click on yes, it patches the code and you re-boot the laptop, going in to the BIOS. that's it. once you are in the BIOS, all the settings are there. -
anyone know how to change the NB..
how increase voltage an Mhz? Pscheck doesn't work.... -
Thank you very much for you contribution by removing the integrated graphics and the 7970M leaving only increases performance by providing more fps in games
-
Anyone did some benchmarking after disabling the integrated GPU with MSI Enabler?
-
Wouldn't disabling the Intergrated GPU actually decrease performance? Your making the dedicated gpu do the graphics processing for the operating system, where before it would be solely running an application.
-
I thought the same.
Also, is it possible to force 3.2 Ghz on A-10 4600m with those unlocked BIOS settings? So far it's only possible with A-10 5750m. -
Hello, I've only tried two games with the 7970M f1 2012, better performance and battlefield 4 will not perform as well many downs flames, I think if it works for some games and not others, also had problems with the display driver
-
I see.
On the other hand - what about disabling lower turbo modes? Does 3.2 Ghz on A-4600m work? -
Is it worth updating to windows 8.1? And has anyone had any driver issues when they updated?
-
Hence I have not touched anything, I have the a8-5550es -
I returned to windows 8 after updating to 8.1, yield the same but if you ordered sparrow games will not work, we derived some steam.
-
I need to turn off the faking turbo core at A8 ES. I know I can do it via OverDrive but I think I need to do it before system starts. This turbo holds me with performance. While OCing it back to original turbo P states. And as we know its way lesser then the OCed P states. I got what to do with my ES to force more voltage then 1.212V but need to throw away that turbo. If any have any idea how to turn it off in a bios or how to make this MSI Enabler works for me I would be thankfull.
-
Hi Jamie, my opinion not worth it. I upgrade and had no drivers isues or so but struggles to get the sam performance on 8.1 as on 8. I tried everything I know to get it back to the way it was(performance wise). The gpu is not the problem, the apu is. Even if i lock it on 3.2 it lags behind performance seen on 8.
-
dam i get the same "incorecct function error "
-
Hi all I ventured into the new unlocked bios, chaned the gfx setting not to use the integrated gpu so that I can test the differance. When I wanted to exit the option of save and exit did not work so I chose save and reset. Now the pc starts up with a blank screen. I cant find the cmoa battery to take it out. Please help...
-
The orange and white light of the display indicator keep on changing. How do I reset the bios with out switshing the laptop on? Please help...
-
No idea bud.
I'm honestly surprised disabling the iGPU would let the 7970M/8970M (dGPU) work at all. The display is attached to the iGPU, the dGPU sends frames to the iGPU before they are displayed. If the iGPU is turned off there is nothing connected to the screen. That's how Enduro works, and that's how the iGPU can run everything else like the OS while a game runs on the dGPU.
Basically to summarise: your 7970M/8970M is connected to the iGPU not the screen
I dunno how some people are getting it to work. Technically there should be nothing on the screen. I'd seriously recommend people not try this. -
its stupid but I would try to reflash bios with a bootable pendrive.
if you have switched booting to the usb pendrive then press "enter" some times after starting the system.
write blank cd to directory and a command flash.bat
wait like 10 minutes and try to restart lappy with ctrl alt and delete. reflashing bios should reverse settings
edit
by the way you can try to enter to bios and restore default settings. wait a sec. I will give you sequence to hit on a keyboard after system starts. -
Thanks Snoffin it make sens. Any idea whear the cmos battery is located? I opened the bottom of the laptop but I cant seem to find it so I think it is located underneath the key board but dont know how to take it out.
-
Sorry for the typo using mu phone(no laptop)
-
man.
after system starts press delete some times to enter to the bios.
after that carefully press F9 (load defaults settings) and after press 'enter' to confrim.
finnaly press F10 (save and reset) and after press 'enter' to confrim.
I hope it works. try that at first. after that look for battery or try to reflash as I said -
I am interested in the subject have if someone gives us one solution would be appreciated
-
Thanks Mullrof. Not at home right now but will test once im home. Will give feedback
-
Cheers Man. It worked like a bom! If i knew where you were i would buy you a beer right now. Thanks again.
-
How did you guys installed the mod ? i get "incorrect function error"
-
@RIP
I am so happy that it helped
@randomice
so we are in 3 right here ^^. What OS do you have? I have win7 -
right clip run as administrator and accept, for me it worked.
-
@raul
What OS do you have? -
W8.1 x64 . Tried as administrator , didnt work
-
I have windows 8, I have solved the problems of the display adapter was unstable as follows: in the desktop screen right clip, graphic properties, my digital flat panels, properties (digital flat panel), you disable GPU scale.
-
ok... we all have another OS. its not fault of this ;p what is going on with this error then -.-
-
I completed the test performance of F1 2012 and with the same configuration of integrated and dedicated graphics and I've got 9 fps more with just the 7970M, when I can get some pictures.
