unfortunately with this driver mantle still doasnt work. at last with A8 ES iGPU that affects game just no running

 

I may be the biggest idiot ever, or I'm missing something. How the heck do you update the BIOS? I've gone through both the windows 8 uefi bios update guide and the flash bios by uefi bios setup utility guide off of MSI's site and I cannot get it working for the life of me. Can anyone spell this out to me like I'm a 3 year old?

I've been building rigs for 10 years and I've never had this much trouble updating a BIOS.

What's the easiest way since I failed miserably at both MSI guides? *sigh*

But UEFI BIOS Update doesn't exist in my current BIOS under Advanced.

MSI has GOT to be the WORST notebook manufacture as far as support goes. I can't tell you how many times I've set this laptop down and walked away from it to try and pick it up again with ANOTHER issue. My frustrations started with the brightness control issue, which I resolved (no thanks to MSI).

Please, please, please someone help me out!

Is this using Rufus? Sorry, I can't really tell what he's saying since I don't speak the language.
If he is using Rufus, I've tried this already too but I couldn't boot into my flash drive. Let me know it works for you.

I just can't believe that there's this many people commenting in this thread, that don't have the same problem or a solution they could share. I've looked all over for a hint (including searching through this vary thread).

Fix your broken site and software, MSI.

EDIT: Can anyone confirm that running the BAT file in the BIOS download folder actually flashes the BIOS? I don't want to do something that will brick my notebook.

I found that it may be possible to do it this way per MSI's gaming community forums ( http://dragonarmy.msi.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63858&highlight=can't+update+bios)

 

Flashing the bios in Windows is a seriously bad idea. Flashing anything in Windows is a bad idea.

 

Then how the heck do you do it if none of the other options work?

 

Besides Windows method, you can do it in DOS.
1. You can make a bootable USB flash drive first.
2. Put BIOS files in a folder on USB flash drive.
3. Run legacy mode in the BIOS if applicable.
4. Press F11 key to bring up boot menu.
5. Select USB flash drive to boot from.
6. Perform BIOS update.

If it's too much of a hassle, then use the Windows method but make sure your system is actually running fine without any stability issues as we don't want brick to happen from the BIOS update.

First gen of GX60:
MSI Global - Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Motherboard, Graphics and more
Procedure: Disable UAC, reboot, and double-click on FLASHWinX64.BAT to proceed.

Second/Third gen of GX60:
MSI Global GX60 Destroyer
Procedure: Disable UAC, reboot, and double-click on FLASHWIN.BAT to proceed.

Now my question is this, when I try to start from USB key by pressing F11 on start-up, I get to the point where it asks me which drive to boot from. I choose the correct drive and hit enter. The same screen shows up again on which drive I want to start-up from and again I choose the correct drive. It seems to ignore my request and boots into Windows instead.

At this point, I feel like updating through the BAT is the only way.

I've tried different USB sticks. Tried FAT and FAT32. Tried multiple boot modes. Tried multiple UEFI flash drive utilities. I even RMA'd my laptop back to MSI to see if there was a problem and they just sent it directly back to me.

I'm a seasoned builder and flash BIOS all the time on my other rigs, but for some reason this laptop has just driven me crazy with all the hoops I've had to jump through to get it to work properly.

Anyway, thanks again for your help. Windows BAT-brick mode activate!

First gen gx60 here, what's the benefit of flashing the bios?

 

So basically the BIOS is a very low level hardware controller for the most basic of control input and output functions on your mainboard (motherboard). You can also think of this as firmware. This firmware, like any other driver you would install in the operating system environment, needs periodically updated to fix bugs and performance issues that were overlooked during the original release of the product or in this case your motherboard.

Sometimes new hardware or software comes out that needs input or output by the BIOS. Since these new products are not supported originally by the BIOS, BIOS updates are released to keep things running stable and proper.

So, you really don't need to update it unless you notice performance issues or there is new functionality added to your hardware through a BIOS update. If you read the notes on MSI's website below each BIOS download link, it should list a few things that have been updated.

Thanks again for your suggestions. UAC is always disabled on my Windows machines so that's never an issue. Booted my laptop in diagnostic startup mode and ran the batch file. BIOS update went flawlessly. It would have been nice for MSI to let us know it's possible to update from that .BAT file. I've built countless rigs and never new about that option.

I play this game called ghost recon online, despite the good gpu 8970m I get frame spikes when I move the mouse (it drops) and the cpu is at 90-100% with the majority of times 100%. I clocked it to 3.2ghz using baredit -as mentioned in this forum- but still no improvements

Hey, just got myself a new MSI GX60 1AC (first gen).
I am sure everything has been written here already but I really can't read through all 378 pages.
So I'm asking, is there a good soul who can give me some tips to begin with?

I installed some drivers from MSI page but I am not really sure about them. There are 2 wireless lan drivers and the Killer BigFoot LAN is kinda weird, I am not sure if I am getting full speed. I used to have 7 MB/s download speed, now I have just 4 MB/s. It could be problem with my internet provider, though.
I installed newer graphics drivers but it was all wrong - after a while of playing I got so-called pool leaks (memory usage at 100%), so I went back to the graphics driver from MSI page.
I started playing Thief yesterday and a weird thing happened. I tried benchmark on the highest details, I got around 20 FPS, so I tried the lowest details and I got around 16 FPS. Isn't that weird?
I am considering flashing BIOS but I have no experience with it and I am scared something could go wrong.. Is it safe to flash it, which version should I use, there are 2 on MSI page.
P.S.: I am using Windows 8.1

Are you sure Thief was running on the 7970M not the integrated card? It's only 2 posts above yours that RIPGreave mentions thief running well.. Was the orange light on the power button on?

That's a GT70 but not sure why the reseller used Z70, possibly a fake.

 

mm I skipped buying a laptop till the next generation and I think it paid of well.

for like 80 euro more I can get the apache which has an 4700mq and a 8600m(770m equivalent or better), on average how much FPS would this give you on high settings on most games compared to the bottlenecked A10-5750 + m290x? like 50%?

The light is orange as it always is. I don't see it very often to be orange.
As I said, I have the first generation and AMD/ATI drivers from MSI site, I think it's version 9.012 - newer drivers do the "pool leaks". No BIOS flashes, no modifications, no tricks, no nothing. I just installed the drivers from msi site and that was all.. That's why I am asking for some tips to begin with. It seems I am not using the full potential the machine has.

I will be very greatful for any tips, tricks, help or whatever from anyone

I have the MSI GX60 1AC (Changed the 4600m for the 5750m). I recently decided to flash my vBIOS to increase the voltage and allow higher overclocks, I haven't been able to find any good guides that explain how to do it so the information I used was taken from many places and combined. I extracted the bios with GPU-Z, modified it with VBE7.0.0.7b and flashed it with ATIwinflash.

The Radeon 7970m in my laptop was locked at 1.0v, and with this voltage using MSI Afterburner I was not able to go above 935 core, 1525 memory without crashing. I've read reports of people going up to 1000/1500 on stock voltage and envy them very much as they must have gotten great cards, while mine is very mediocre.

I opted to tinker with the voltage to get some more juice out of it, I changed the voltage from 1.0 to 1.05v and this has allowed me to push the card to 980 core, 1500 memory and run stable, the temperature sits around 84c while gaming.

Obligatory comparison benchmarks:

As you can see, overclocking and modifying the voltage to get even a small increase in core clock yields a fairly significant performance gain versus non-voltage modded stock overclocks.

Now for the problems. While modifying the bios I noticed something strange, it seems that the VBE7 tool reads the stock voltage at the highest power state (800/1200) as being 1.075v instead of 1.000v (when you first open the vbios you see 1.075 as the highest step), if you change that top voltage to 1.050 and flash it, then there are no issues, the voltage goes up to 1.050 after overclocking via MSI Afterburner (verified with speedfan). HOWEVER if you leave the voltage at 1.075, or even flash to 1.050 and then modify the 1.050 bios to 1.075 when you flash the new bios which is supposed to give the card 1.075v at the highest step you end up with 1.000v again, it seems that you cannot flash a 1.075v voltage using this tool to modify the bios for some reason.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem ? I would like to push my card to 1.075v to get over the 1000/1500 barrier, but don't want to risk going all the way to 1.1v which is the next step up.

I would be willing to try 1.1v if the highest step in the Powerplay scheme was not also synchronized with the boot voltage (when you change the powerplay 800/1200 voltage it also changes the boot voltage to the same number). If there was some way to modify the 2 values independently then 1.1 would be safer, as the card would not enter that state until it was OCed via MSI Afterburner in Windows, at which point it would crash (or burn, hopefully the former) and then upon restart you could just flash a lower voltage bios (assuming you didn't fry your card).

I opted to just take the leap to 1.1v and skip 1.075v altogether and so far it has worked pretty well:

(1040/1450), it runs at around 84-86c which is pretty hot but it seems stable. I got a crash at 1040/1550 so I'm guessing the memory may be holding me back. I don't have time to test it extensively right now and find the optimal numbers but I will later tonight.

Edit 2:

I did some more testing and have gotten some pretty amazing results. I downgraded my driver to 13.30 beta rc1 and ran tests. I discovered that my old stable settings (1040/1450) were crashing 3dmark11, while with the newer drivers they were not. I opted to drop the clocks gradually until I came to 1000/1400 and got through the whole benchmark, the results are pretty ridiculous: (I now hold the top spot for similar graphics configs)

I'm getting near 8k graphics and over 3k physics now.

I think the core clock can be increased further at the cost of memory, I'll optimize it further when I have time and post the results.

Not much you can do about it anymore since it's very likely to be shorted.
Call MSI and order a replacement keyboard.

well, normally its doasnt work. you can force to run with mantle by disabling in bios powerXpress but its bugged way. the game spikes so hard.
we have to wait for official mantle support for GX

 

Why does gpuz on my 3be show that 8650g's temperature is more than 8970m's for ~30-40c (lol it sometimes shows ~105-110c when 8970m has ~80-90).

There's a value to change in "regedit" in the registry,read here :

MSI GX60 brightness control is not working

it might not be the exact same number, just look for an entry with enablebrightnessinterface in it, if more than one, change them all.

et voilà, brightness works again !

hi friends I am new in this forum but already came here many times to read this thread and solve my problems about the gx60.
So I am from Portugal and i have a msi gx60 1ac . Msi doesnt sold this model here, i buyed it from Germany.
On my country doesnt exist other gx60 users or any information about it. So i came here to this forum because is the place where i can find more gx60 users to help me.
So, the problem is that i upgraded the a10-4600m to a a10-5750m and probably have used a bad thermal paste.
And the new cpu now is heating a little bit more, nothing serious and the cooling system work more times.
Now seeing the specs i found this:

I am using catalyst 13.12.
The cpu clocks dont should be reaching only something like 3500 mhz???
(sorry if i writed many mistakes)

 

That program may not be detecting CPU clocks correctly, get an AMD focused CPU monitor.

 

Are you sure that HD7970 will support DX 12 ?
