Like JamesD said: Remove the driver for the AMD card. DDU is a program designed to thoroughly erase display driver data. Try that, then reboot the laptop; just keep your driver installed for the integrated graphics only.

 

I had this issue when i used a program to clean all AMD drivers. I think it is not your case...
If this can help i reinstalled windows but dont forget to disable uptades with windows update. Because every times you try to remove the old driver and restart, Windows install a driver without catalyst and this can lead to instabilities.

 

The integrated card driver is thesame for the graphic card driver

 

Can you physically remove the video card? I'm not familiar with the "guts" of this model, but if it uses an MXM card, you can try that; remove it, and see if the system will boot and run without it.

You need to uninstall all drivers. If you have msi gx60 1a with 7970m. Install 9.12.0.0_8700 from the msi site

I just picked up a 3cc destroyer model. I have read through most of the pages. Just a few thoughts. The steelseries keyboard is by far the Nicest keyboard I've used and overall build is very solid. Just wondering what gpu drivers any win 10 users are currently using seeing as AMD reverted the igpu to legacy status. I had a Samsung with the 4600m and it's still ticking right along over at the mother in laws with the standard win 10 selected driver. I got this computer for my truck so my kids could use my y510p at the house because it was downclocking terribly in here due to its utterly terrible cooling system. The gx60 is just adequate for the only game I play "World of tanks" which is soo poorly optimized I question how much longer the game will survive in its present form.

Anyways sorry I went off tangent. So what drivers are you guys using on win 10?

 

since i got a problem which i have trouble with solving myself i want to have some input from you guys . I sold the 7970m a while ago and managed to keep rhebfan from spinning at 100% with tpfancontrol. Only there is slight problem in combination with windows 10 . The wifi control on the scm and the touchpad on the bar are disabled when tpfancontrol starts... So my wifi turns off when tpfancontrol starts . When i disable the auto start of tpfc the wifi works just fine. I tried a lot of ini configurations but i can seem to find the problem

any1here who has a slight idea or hint what to do next

 

Can you tell me what is the latest drivers WORKING for Gx60/70 please ?

 

I was working with this, on my GX60 Destroyer-280 3cc, and something weird happened. Using Open Hardware Monitor, for a brief time, my Bus Speed went to like 256 instead of 200, and I was showing CPU speeds of 4Ghz to 4.2, and it was running stable while doing some simple video editing with Adobe Premiere Pro. The only thing I can think that I did was put it in the Task Scheduler to start when the system boots up, with a bat file for AmdMsrTweaker. After a bit though the bus speed dropped back, and I have no idea how I had changed it in the first place. I didn't do the BAR-EDIT any to make it lock at 3.2, which is the fastest I can get it to run now. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

 

I guess I should have added that I have the 5750m CPU. I did the BIOS update and VBIOS from MSI's website, if I remember right it was for the Windows 8.1, which I think is what this came with, I got it used. I am currently running Windows 10.

 

For the 8650 part of the APU, mine is running 15.201.1151.1010
For the 8970m (which is supposed to be m290x) 15.300.1025.1001

I got to this point (Windows 10 Pro) by uninstalling AMD drivers, run the AMDclean utility, then install the drivers from MSI's website, which are the 15.11 beta. Then, Windows 10 decided to auto update the 8970m drivers, but it seems to be running stable. If I try to install the latest drivers from AMD myself, I end up with the 8970m showing disabled and having a "problem," but if I disable then enable it after Windows boots it shows that it's working, though I haven't been able to verify it.

As I'm in school right now I haven't had much chance to try any games to see if it's running like it should.

I hope this forum isn't dead like the lack of updates from MSI on this model. It's a shame to have a laptop with such potential not get driver updates especially after Windows 10 came out.

 

Ok, it seems that the GX60 3cc does not at all use the 8970m or whatever it wants to be called in Windows 10 for games, regardless of the driver. So I've tried to go to Windows 7, but the USB 3.0 driver supplied by MSI on their website does not install. Also, the LAN driver does not seem to work. I remember reading something about bricking the system if you do an incorrect BIOS flash, so I'm reluctant to try the BIOS for Windows 7 from MSI. Can anyone verify if the r9m290x actually functions properly under Windows 7, or do I need to try to find a Windows 8/8.1 installation disk? This laptop has been aggravation since I got it because of this problem. Everything else runs fine under Windows 10. Only under Windows 7 have I ever seen the video card show up as m290x, in 10 it shows as 8970m. Does anyone have any idea about the usb 3 drivers for Windows 7?

So ready to just get an i7 4720hq with 960m or even 840m and be done with this thing. Seriously, there should be a class action lawsuit for failure to support the GX60's video setup. All we need is functioning drivers to work under Windows 10 and everything would be fine.

 

Don't quote me as I am no expert, but to the best of my knowledge here is what I know:

Card has wrong name:
The Radeon R9 m290x is a brand of the 8970m, so when you use a generic driver the system will read it as 8970m as opposed to R9 m290x.

Updating:
When you are running discreet graphics alongside a AMD processor, you update the APU as opposed to separately updating the GPU independently as you would if you had an Intel processor with the Radeon.
I did manage to properly update the GPU independently but I can't remember how.

Can anyone please help me, i recently got my hands on the MSI G60 1AC from a friend, Im having a big problem installing GPU drivers.. Im not used to a laptop having two GPU.s, do i need do install drivers for both the 7660G and 7970M or only one of them? And which drivers do pick? since i want the latest drivers i really doubt that the drivers on MSI.s website is updated, i have tried downloading drivers directly from the AMD website, but i dont know which gpu to pick the drivers for.. Im using windows 10 64 bit. Please help, thanks!!!

 

I heard that you need to install 2 drivers: firt one is older (v15......) for integrated and then newer 16.3.2 MAX for discrete because if install newer then you have conflict.

Yeah, follow this instructions:
A) Just use Crimson 15.11.1 Beta without a problem*:
1. Delete all drivers. You may use DDU for this.
2. Install 15.11.1
B) Use newer AMD drivers but not earlier than 16.3.2*:
1. Delete all drivers. You may use DDU for this.
2. Through Device Manager you should update drivers for integrated card (iGPU 8650G) from 15.7 OR Catalyst 15.11.1 Beta OR Crimson 15.11.1 Beta.
While following step 2 your 7970m will also get new drivers.
3. Through Device manager delete drivers from 7970m fully. Reboot. You will see Unknown Device in Device manager instead of 7970M.
4. Now launch some new driver for 7970M but not earlier than 16.3.2*.

*Note that for example DOOM works way better on older driver Crimson 15.11.1 Beta than on Crimson 16.3.2

Found it thanks! Do you know if there is a way to check what GPU a game is using? some games are lagging a lot, and i just wanna see if the pc can't handle it or if it is using the apu instead of the dedicated..

 

Update: Now i have another problem, i have tried meny different drivers, But i get BSOD about 3 mins after entering a game "thread_stuck_in_device_driver".. i have tried skyrim and mafia 2, same problem even on the lowest settings + windowed mode.. any tips?

 

You don't use windows 10, do you?
Well, then try to do same thing again or just choose to stay at 15.11.1 for both GPUs.

 

I solved it, the bluescreens was because of the charger not being powerful enough, no more bsods. i have another question, when downloading drivers on the AMD.s website, what category should i choose? should i pick the drivers for the APU, or for the 7600G, or for the dedicated one? I know that i cant install all of them.. Thanks!

 

I got one of these machines a while back for my wife, and haven't done much with it. A friend is coming over to play Ark Survival Evolved and needed to borrow it to play on, so I loaded it up and got it working...but driver support is nearly nothing, and everything I try says its not compatible with the system and to keep what I have installed if it is working. I have updated to test several things but the best FPS I can get out of Ark is 10...on lowest settings with resolution set to 1440x1050......on highest settings and 1080 it is 0.35 fps lol. I am guessing the R9 M290 is not actually running, but I have set everything for performance. I have wiped several times and started with fresh drivers, I even reinstalled windows 10 for the heck of it to see...I am at a loss to why this is so bad.

Hopefully it was ok to make this post here vs a a new thread, I went back and forth but I figured this is where I would find the most dedicated support?

 

Hello guys! For those who are still having problems, I'd like to share my solution for Crimson Relive Edition 16.12.1. I'm gonna try to explain very clearly.

Let me begin with my specs first:

MSI GX60 3BE Gaming Laptop. Windows 10 - 64Bit
CPU: AMD Quad Core A10-5750M Processor
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 8650G & AMD Radeon HD 8970M
Crimson Edition I was using: Radeon-Software-Crimson-Edition-15.11.1-Beta-64Bit-Win10


Applications you need:

I do not recommend DDU because I always had issues (Crimson Radeon Settings is not working after installing Crimson this way). We're going to use AMD Clean Uninstall Utility instead.

Please do these steps at your own risk. I strongly recommend you to create a restore point in case anything goes wrong. Close all applications, and right click on Start Button, and click System. Click System Protection. A window will appear. Click "Create..." at the bottom of the window and name it and click Create. Wait for a while until you get a warning about it.


1. Before starting to uninstall drivers, please delete everything in C:\AMD

2. Go to Control Panel - Programs - Uninstall a Program and uninstall AMD Quick Stream (do not reboot), then uninstall AMD Install Manager and reboot.

3. After restarting, please Disable your ANTI-VIRUS.

4. Run amdcleanuputility.exe (AMD Clean Uninstall Utility) as an administrator and approve the warnings. Then, reboot your computer.

5. Run win10-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-relive-16.12.1-dec7.exe (Crimson Relive 16.12.1) as an administrator and click Install. After the extraction is finished, Installer will probably warn you about Radeon HD 8650G. Cancel the installation and close the installer. Go to C:\AMD\Win10-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-ReLive-16.12.1-Dec7\Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF folder and find "C0309270.inf" file. Right click on it and click Install. Wait for about 1 minute. A warning will show up like "The process is successfully completed". Click OK. Do not Reboot yet!

6. Run non-whql-64bit-nieg-radeon-crimson-16.2.1-win10-win8.1-win7-feb27.exe (Crimson 16.2.1 Beta for non GCN) as an administrator. Click Install and wait for it to be extracted. Then, installation window will appear. Make sure everything is checked except AMD Gaming Evolved App (It is unnecessary and affects your performance in a bad way). I recommend you to uncheck it, but it is optional and up to you. Then click Install. After it is done, restart window will show up. Before restarting, uncheck "Automatically download latest driver". Then, restart your computer.


Right click on desktop and click AMD Radeon Settings. Here's what I have about the new version of AMD Crimson and Radeon Additional Settings - Switchable Graphics Application Settings also work:

One last thing to mention. Please do not update your graphics driver via Crimson or Windows Update, because it will ruin everything you did to fix this issue. If AMD releases new update for HD 8970M, just download the new Crimson Edition from the website and do the same steps from the beginning. You just have to use new version of AMD Crimson Relive instead of AMD Crimson Relive 16.12.1 to update your HD 8970M.

Hello everyone. Recently I decided to replace ssd plextor 128gb with Kingston 240gb on my GX60-3cc and ran into the impossibility of overclocking the processor (5750m es) if there is a Kingston disk in my laptop (even if I install the system on a hard drive disk). Different versions of windows 10, installation of the chipset driver, different versions of video card drivers (tried 15.12 / 16.2.1 + 16.2.1 / 16.7.2 / 17.1.1), the error was not corrected. If i change the frequency (namely the frequency, and not necessarily to the higher side)with amdmsrtweaker or amd overdrive, laptop is dropped to flickering login screen and when i try to leave it, ripples begin to appear on the screen and again throws it to the login screen. If there are new video card drivers the next time i start the laptop, there is a message about crash drivers for the video card. With the old SSD the processor was perfectly overclocking and the problem didn't exist. I ask to help with the solution and elimination of this phenomenon. Sorry for my bad English

 

Hi guys,
I'm having a weird issue with my GX60-3CC. Whenever I'm on windows my power button is always orange instead of white regardless of power settings. The power light stays orange even when I'm not playing a game. I think this started happening after I updated my BIOS + vBIOS. I've tried everything to fix this, including reinstalling my drivers and reinstalling Windows 7. Honestly, this issue isn't bothering me too much since switchable graphics is working fine but I'd love to have the power indicator back to normal.
Heres my BIOS and vBIOS info:
BIOS Version: E16FKAMS.P0M
BIOS Release Date: 2014/09/12

AMD Radeon(TM) HD8970M vBIOS:
BIOS Version 015.046.000.021
BIOS Date 2014/08/18

This always happens to me when Windows futzes with my drivers. Are you able to launch the Radeon control center?

I'm no expert, but maybe follow ubilada's fantastic advice on page 453?

 

Windows 10 Creators update reverts System timer from HPET to RTC.

If you encounter any issue when Over Clocking with GXMod's script like display becoming black or corrupted, just launch GXMod and select option 5 again like the first time:

And reboot to take effect.

You should be able to OC again without issue.

 

After upgrading to Windows 10 and uninstalling drivers with DDU, then reinstalling them, my computer throws a VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR BSOD every time it switches to the dedicated card (HD9790M). I've tried numerous things like a clean install, restoring, older drivers but none fixes it. Would flashing the BIOS maybe work? I'm at a loss here. Sometimes when I install older drivers, they are just not recognised and I get the 'not installed or not functioning properly' notice from AMD. Thanks.

EDIT: The solution for me was to flash the BIOS. Worked perfectly.

You're a miracle from above, a true godsend. After formatting to the Creators Update, I thought the newest update broke the new drivers for us forever, and since I declined to use the last WHQL drivers I have been resigned to sit on the 1607 version for like two weeks until I saw your post.

So yeah, I confirm. Updating the bios worked against the BSOD, at least on my GX70-3CC. Do not update the VBIOS all along with the new BIOS though - people have been complaining that the GPU suddenly downclocks to 900mhz after the vbios update.

 

I'm having a very strange issue. My fan dies under heavy load (like playing a game). It sometimes dies instantly, sometimes doesn't. The fan sort of revs up and down every few seconds until it eventually fully stops with erratic spins. I've opened it up, cleaned it and will be reapplying thermal paste soon but I have no idea why it does this. Without playing a game, at temps of 50-60 degrees it works perfectly fine. If I use coolerboost, it goes all the way to 5000rpm. If I turn it off and wait for it to cool down after the fan stops, it'll work again as usual.

Do you think the fan is dead (despite it working perfectly unless I play a game)? The bearing is worn? The CPU overheating affects the fan? Would an overheating power adapter cause such issues? Could it be a driver/BIOS issue? There are no similar problems to this.

 

Hi, i've got the same issue as you and Emmo2gee but i'm not really good at bios etc.. Would you please link me or explain me how to update our gx60's bios ? I already searched around the web but it lead me to msi's website wich only display 2014's bios, and i don't think that this is the most recent version for a bios.

 

As far as I know, there are really just these two versions? Would love some clarification as well, though....

Actually, I had a lot of problems with the graphic card drivers after switching to Win10 and the E16FKAMS.D0L version (installed on legacy).
I tried to fix it with the instructions provided by ubilada ( #4529), which worked for me for a few months.
After that I thought the problem was the legacy mode so I tried reinstalling Win on UEFI (tried both, CSM and w/o), but for some reason that was not possible.
I also tried updating the firmware for the D0L to 16FKEMS4.506 (previous v. 502), but with no success again.
Then I tried the other BIOS version (E16FKAMS.90L) and realized this one had the above mentioned firmware (so that confused me even more).
I always read the instructions and manuals provided on the official MSI support site.
I did not do anything with the VBIOS.

Right now I am trying to figure out the best option - not sure about Win10 as there is no BIOS update for it on MSI GX60 3BE... or is there?

So there is currently no option to install latest Crimson drivers for 7970m (i'm running GX60 1ac)? If there is can You make explantion of steps that I need to take?

And now a bit of a rant about entire isue:
This isue makes some of the titles released throught last couple of years not running at expected performance, if at all (I had problems with BF1, ME:A, DA:I, Walking Dead, Total War: Warhammer, and now Shadow of War). I am battling the isue at least twice a year since with new release or windows update, and i'm getting seriously pissed that "The First and Only Choice for the Best Performance " as it is still marketed on MSI website is not capable of working as expected or at all. And ignorance of the problem and users who invested heavy money in their hardware both from AMD and MSI is cherry on top.

Literally first and last time I bought product form MSI/AMD.

 

P.S. Read the description on youtube. There were some info added about what NIEG driver bring its own specifics.

 

Hi, i've got a huge problem for months and I can't find any way to fix it !
I followed many advices from MSI France's forum members and we didn't fixed it, but since this GX 60 is so ... weird ? Maybe someone here is/were in the same case.

So, my problem is that months ago (around 1st of July i'd say), my fan doesn't work at boot. It causes limited performances from the HD 8970m. I can't activate Cooler Boost, the fan doesn't make any noice. I didn't try to open the back side while the pc is running (i'm not an expert but isn't it dangerous ?).
The "glitch" i use, i'd say, to go through this problem, is that I put an external fan next to the air-hole to prevent over heating (past some temperature, the system activate a security mod that shut down the PC) and then I launch a game, for exemple i use Rocket League.
It runs around 25-28fps (normaly it's around 75-80), and after 15-60minutes (yeah sometimes it takes time), the fan goes full speed, so cooler boost is activate, i close/launch the game again,It runs normaly.Then, until I shut down the PC, fans are working as they should do normaly (note : If i use "restart" the fan works at boot).

Things I tried : Clean Install of Windows 10 / Installing all types of graphic drivers (with ubilada's method) / Uninstall/Install Dragon Center + SCM / Removing Dust / Updating all drivers / Updating BIOS/VBIOS/Firmware (with MSI's France Forum members advices and MSI guides).
The last thing I tried was going back to a clean version of Windows 7, since last Bios version is build for windows 7.

I really would like to try another gx60's fan but i don't know anyone with this pc or any gx model ! I looked for buying a new one but it's a cost, around 60€ + shipping cost and i'm not even sure it will fix my problem, so that's "risky". (I only searched on french sites/from french merchants so if you know any other good sites for cheaper tell me please !)
About oil or other stuff like thermal paste, i don't know much about this, i think it's something that needs rigor and to be prepared.
Yet I didn't looked for tutorials or forums about that so if you know some good guides/sites/videos about the method i'll take it !
I'll try anything, i'd like to fix it atleast until christmas !

 

Well, if Hot-dogs cost 5Є then it's not a surprise for a 20$ fan to cost 60Є.
If you already reflashed laptop then I am pretty sure it's not software error but just in case you also can fiddle with GT70 Fan Control, decryption key in PM.

Perhpas it's not the best idea to put liquid oil into it if they cost so much. It can make you fan noisier. But can you take out bottom cover, put laptop on side, turn it on and if fan doesn't spin, try moving it with a finger? If it spins easily manually but not automatically then perhaps it's motherboard problem or connector. You could try to reseat fan's wire connector from motherboard

In fact I opened my PC and picked up the CPU fan's reference : pabd19735bm.
It cost around 20€ from chinese merchants on eBay ! So i'm gonna buy this one, i'll receive this between 01/11 and 16/11 !
I'll come back with some news when I receive the item !

Edit : I tried out GT70 Fan control, it didn't work, I can't figure out if these numbers are OK but we can see that the FAN is running at 0 RPM (is the main fan = gpu fan ?)

 

You are too quick with decisions, you know that?
First, fan from China is cheapest at 15$ like this one
Also, as I said before, the problem can still lie inside motherboard, not fan itself. 15$ Doesn't look like big price to risk with while 20Euros is little bit harder to swallow.
P.S. It's not guaranteed that OHM shows GPU fan as main one. You can check that only when your fan starts spinning but it wouldn't give you much anyways.

By looking further, the chinese one at 15$ didn't match with my actual model. I bought the right (and new) one for 35€ on a reliable professional french site which provides good and secured products, I contacted them and, in case the product doesn't work i'm 100% refunded. I'll receive the package friday and I'll keep you aware of the situation !
P.S 35€ doesn't bother me that much since I want my pc to work till christmas and then i'll sell it, in France I found some working GX60 sold for ~250€-300€.

 

So here i am ! Finaly my PC is working, the new fan solved all my problems ! Thank you for your answears ;D !

 

Guys, I found a solution for the freezes in Windows 10 Creators Update :

Just install it and set it in Game Mode, it blocks the dedicated graphics from switching to the legacy, which W10 Creators doesn't support.
And update BIOS if it's not working (but it should work anyway).
And I think this is a solution to enable DX12, but I don't tested it yet.
(If my english is incorrect : I'm french)

Edit : DON'T DO THIS ! Everytime I try to launch a game, freezes & BSoD's. Rolling back to Anniversary Update. **** MSI & AMD.

It can be caused by multiple factors, but that's pretty much a defective keyboard which requires to be replaced.
The part isn't expensive if you search for it on eBay, and replacement process is simple and easy.
