I wouldn't want the alienware, the msi notebooks are so lightweight in comparison and that matters a lot to me.

Yeah I know but I just leave mine sitting on my desk all the time so it being not portable dont matter, I need the power and preformance. Plus I just love the new design, its so awesome. Dont get me wrong my GT725 is great but I want the best of the best and I never owned an alienware and the new design is a must have for me.

Well 5 grand gets you best of the best, so does the asus w90 at 2 grand :p

Id have the w90 over aw anyday hehe.

But for now, this is running like gtx 280 sli at full hd res :p

Which means my machine compares to the best of the best :p

So no qx9300, who cares :D

Yeah the W90 is nice but I just dont like the design. The AW will cost me $2,624.00 with SLi GTX 280m's, 4Gbs Ram, 500GB HD, 1920 x 1200 Res, and a P8600.. I'd put my Q9100 in the AW and put the P9500 back in the GT725, all is good..

Thats pretty cheap for the newest GPU's out..

So is it true that quad's can't use the turbo button? My t9900 is completely stable with 20% OC @ 3.67

It can use the turbo button, but the OC is maxed at ~2628 no matter the BIOS settings.

Correct, i tested the Q9000 in the bare bone version MS-1722 and adjusted the cover to get the OC function up and running. (all other stuff is tested to BIOS & EC Firmware)
No it doesn't make a difference what you try it will not get past 26xx, but OC is working and the notebook is running fine.

So it would be pointless to get the qx300 when you can get the cheaper ones and OC them to 2.6ghz....

The advantage of the QX9300 is you can run the memory 1:1 (FSB set to 800) and hit 2628 and hit an FSB of ~415 and you get the 12mb cache vs. 6mb and maintain 5-5-5-15 timings (at least you do with G.Skill with the OC).

I'm not sure about the Q9000, but 2ghz -> 2.628ghz = ~31% OC, so you will have to drop down to 667 and even then your FSB will hit 876 which may force a 3:2. If the Turbo function tops out at 24% via BIOS, then you are looking at a max OC of 2.48ghz.

What is the max OC a Q9000 can achieve in the 1722 via Turbo/BIOS function?
    What are the memory timings?

BTW, does anyone else notice their battery will not charge unless it gets to a certain %? For example, mine is at 98% but will not charge.

And this guy says his will not charge unless it is at 95%. Link

I don't really care if this is the case, but I would like to know for sure...

Does anyone have links to EC v4.27? This was the version that came with my laptop and I think i may try going back to it to see if that fixes any fan problem...

Darth, you can grab older EC firmwares from http://www.bto.eu/
I'm not sure how they distinguish between MS-1722 ID1 and ID2, but I think they have both on file. I had the same fan issue as you on EC 4.29, had to downgrade to 4.22 or 4.17 (can't remember which, my laptop is currently dead).

Firmware version distinguish by controlling the buttons like explained in the start of this topic.
ID2 is using touch sensitive panel.
ID1 is using 4 buttons on left side, no OC and no Turbo.
Wrong firmware version will disable P1 button and Camera button.

strange that you guys are having issues with the ec firmware, i guess its possible but i didnt think that it would cause too much of an issue, as for the disabling of buttons, i noticed my p1 is disabled, im currently running 4.29 with no issues besides that, and 1.0s.
What exactly is the ec and why the hell does it have its own firmware? this is the first time ive seen a second item to flash in a laptop, im guessing it some sort or secondary bios? like a southbridge for bioses, with special purpose? oh and btw my webcam works too even though i have this version, it sounds like an isolated incident, id say try reflashing, its possible it was just a bad flash... maybe get a different source?

Darth i will say that theres no controlling program at all man, as for your fan speed issue i dont expect to hear this fan sounding like a hairdryer anytime soon, its got a much much larger blower than most other laptops so as a result it has lower rpms while giving increased airflow, its like the 120mm of the desktop world.

As for that ailenware, i can build you a nice 720 or 725 and attach a cinder block or two if you want that weighty feel of the ailenwares. maybe spray paint the cinder blocks green or something, give it an ailen feel. will that suffice? oh and i have to replace the battery with 2 AAA's to simulate ailenware battery life performance for a laptop of that calibur. :p

I just want to know why my fan doesn't speed up when it's hot. I love that its very, very quiet, but I would be happy to give that up for some better temperatures under load. What are the thermal limits of the 9600m? The highest i've seen mine is 84.

For my t9900, without OC, it goes to 59-63 under load. At a OC of 3.67, it goes up to 72. With or without the OC, the fan never seems to care and just keeps quiet

Well maybe your fan is kicking in? I would try a prime95 stress test, and try cook your northbridge a bit, then see if the heavy stage for the fan kicks in. I know mine does hehe.

The only way you might have issues with an ES is if it isn't a final engineering sample and has problems with the temp sensors or just general abuse / bad chip which I never see with ES chips. Accept ES chips get the snot pounded out of them, but I'm usually ok with that in certain situations. :)

good luck with that. i almost got a 3870 form ebay, but the guy wanted at least $300 for it....

then there are a lot of "quadro" cards that are better then the 9600m gt, but they are all from hp laptops, which are known not to work in non-hp laptops.

Everything else on ebay is a dell video card that are old and also incompatible.

Then when you do find a card, you have to worry about modding the heatsink

but to be honest, the 9600m gt is a damn good card

Reset your EC and see if your fan acts differently. Pull the battery and power cable and let it set for a minute or two. Fire it up and stress it and see what your temps do.

I had a couple of these earlier in the year, nice notebooks. Every now and again the fan wouldn't spin up like normal and the GPU would get a little warm like yours but a quick EC reset would fix it and all was normal again.

No doubt these are not for the ID2 version only for the ID1 version.
Its the same for the BIOS files only for the ID1 version.
www.bto.eu is a notebook building company which start on the bare bone / whitebox version which are different then the retail/OEM version.
The ID1 is not delivered with the touch sensitive panel, this model is using 4 buttons on the left side: power, WLAN/BT, P1 and Camera.
If the Camera isn't' working or the P1 is acting different then almost 100% sure you are using the wrong EC firmware file.
EC Firmware file is for the keyboard to be programmed, FAN heat detection button behavior and small details like camera, wlan and bt actions.

I Hope this will clear it up a little.

Thanks. I will just forget about getting a different EC version.

electrosoft, was the heatsink 100% incompatible with the 8800m? Did at least one screw fit? Because if the heatsink cannot be easily modded to fit a mxm-III, I will just forget about upgrading the video card.
