The serial # is located under the battery, you have to take the battery out but the sticker where the serial number should be might be ripped off, if thats the case then its stolen most likely.. Or the serial number will be on the side of the box it came in..

Whats the name of the eBay seller you got it from??

No, because I have had no reason to. Until I need to use the warranty, which I have never had to do with anything I own, I feel no need to.

I think it was also on the box...

Did your barebone come in a SEALED (unopen) box? Mine did.

If it's not there, then your only hope is to connect someone like RK and request to buy a new motherboard.

To be honest, it would be cheaper just to buy another barebones. You can get them for $400.00 still..

The person you bought it from, send him a messege and see if he can refund you or do something for you at least. Are you sure its the motherboard, Did you try and power it back on?

To be blunt, the seller is not liable for anything. The unit become dead by the action of the buyer, therefore the seller doesn't have to do anything. :(

thanks i am going to contact the seller. I am not sure about the approach though. i am sure it is the motherboard, as i tried to power up again, and it did nothing (besides, i was sniffing the board and found the northbridge smelling like electrical fire). I am really at a loss here. I didn't even get to boot up windows of it T_T :(

oh, and if i do get one with wsxga, can i just replace the LCD with my wuxga?

Yes, you can switch them. If you are going to buy a new one, you can at least sell all the parts you don't use...

Also, I can confirm that this guy is legit, i bought mine from him:

how much you think i can sell the rest of the laptop without the lcd for?

I give many thanks to RobRKComputers, he has been of much help. He said i can open a dispute with paypal/ebay, as many of these stolen laptops have been popping up. He said i should have no trouble getting my money back. Darth Bane (love ur username btw), you confirm wordwideelectronics is a legit seller?

what do you mean "without lcd"? If you buying a new barebone, then that new barebone will come with a new lcd, so you would just swap them...

You probably wouldn't get much since it has a bad motherboard. You probably would get more money by selling everything separately, like the 9600m gt.

Yes file a dispute due to the unit being stolen and you sure will get a refund, you will have to ship it back to him at your own expense though, so I hope everything works out for you. Have a good 4th of July..

After reading this I went to check my barebone and I could not find serial number on mine also. I bought my GX720 WUXGA from ebay couple weeks ago to upgrade my ms-1722 ID1 WSXGA (going on ebay tomorrow).
Could you please tell name of the seller? May be we bought from the same guy. Mine barebone has steel mesh on top of speakers and turbo options labeled on touch panel (exactly as retail MSI version). Did you get the same model?

It can have a serial # and still be stolen.

MSI has long written these off. Only problem is you have no warranty with some of them.

What type wireless card have you installed?
In which slot have installed the wireless card?
And there is always some reserve power in the system, there for it's advised to always press the power button say 10 times to release the reserve power.
For some reason i don't understand how you have managed to do this.

You weren't installing this card while your machine was turned on, were you? At the very least, you need to always disconnect the AC power and remove the battery when working inside any machine. You obviously can't fry a machine if you do that.

Lol i sent the seller a message 3 days ago about the serial number, no response so I think im gonna go ahead. Does MSI embbed the serial number in the bios like IBM/Lenovo does? I'm used to working on those, so i don't know if MSI does this as well. Would be a good idea really.......

Hi all, quick update on my ID2. It arrived today in Australia (tmycoolseller on ebay, he has been temporarily banned recently for not providing enough contact info to ebay/paypal? Sounds strange but apears to be true). The serial number is intact, but I havnt checked if its stolen. Before he got banned he had another 2 for sale, so look out for his return.

It POST's with the T7700, all the info appears in BIOS and everything. But I dont have a HDD yet, so will report back soon with the install :)

I seem to be having a problem with my intel 5300 wifi card. It doesn't always connect automatically on startup. It will about 40% of the time. When it doesn't start, I have to diagnose the problem with vista and then tell it to get a new ip address. It will then get the ip address and start. Once it starts, it works perfectly. Is anyone else having this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for the great information on this board.

just to make sure, we can put any mini pci e wifi card in that slot right? it doesn't have to be an intel 5100 or a 5300 right? It could be a dell 1500 broadcom card right?

does anybody have a disassembly guide?

I found this disassembly guide, it isnt official but offers more detail than the MSI box one (perhaps that URL is an MSI site, not sure).

    http://my-msi.hit.bg/MS-1722Disassemble_SOP.pdf

I plan to use an Intel 43xx wifi card, will update soon if it works.

narc05, wrt cordless phones, some work on the same frequency as wifi. In your access point firmware, you should be able to select a channel from 1-12. You probably cant find the phone channel, but trial and error will give no drop outs on a channel 2-3 away from your cordless :)

And that ebay ID2 is the same seller I just bought from. Its listed as new and sealed, and I belive mine is new. But its not what I would call sealed, as in there is no physical seal preventing somone from getting it out of the box and replacing it.. if you know what I mean. However he is trustworthy and I belive its new. He has good comunication and I can recomend him as a seller.
