Yeah i should think that would work ok quake, although you may want to calculate the power usage for everything, see if the gx 720 is around the same as GT725.

even though i highly doubt anyone finding extra 4850's id sure as hell be interested in one also. As of now the 725 is discontinued and the gt729 is replacing, it, the only difference in the gpu us 512mb vs 1gb which is pretty sweet.

Didn't find the 4850, but LaptopKing has the HD 4570 video card with 512mb DDR3. Note that it's listed as a part for the TOSHIBA Satellite A505 series. And it will set you back $130USD.

Others also had the idea of getting someone with a Alienware M17, getting their service tag, and ordering a new part, I think Alienwares go through DELL spares. DELL will rip you off something shocking for their cards though. A couple of months ago they wanted $800AUD for a nVidia GeForce 7900M GTX!!!

The 4850 works in the 1722's, I tried it when I had my GT725 on a 1722 and everything functioned properly... No heat issues either.. Just use the heatsink from a GT725 or make one... The 4850 is very hard to find, I even have connections with MSI and couldnt get one.. best of luck if you do find one.. The ones from the Alienware M17 will work in the 1722 also..

Lol, you need better connections, someone got a msi 4670 from them.

Have you tried ordering a 4850 from alienware? I believe they only sell to people with alienware systems.

Look at this it's a small list of parts.

The first part number is correct, but it's not the CPU FANSINK but the VGA FANSINK

Hi Everyone,

I've got two questions:

Does anyone know where can I get the latest 64bit drivers (Win 7) for my MSI GX720? Because on the official site you can only download the 32bit versions for win 7.

My other question is that I would like to install the 64bit version of Win 7 (if I'm gonna find the drivers for it) on my GX720, but for some strange reason it doesn't really work. It installs just fine, but after the final reboot, when the installer is finished, It always stuck where win 7 logo appears, and keeps on loading forever. A few months earlier, when I tried to install vista 64bit, I had the exact same issue. What am I doing wrong? I should be able to install a 64bit OS on this notebook...

I am using the 32bit version of Win 7 right now. I am planning to upgrade the original HDD to the Seagate Momentus 7200, and I would like to have a 64bit OS on it, so I could use all 4gigs of my RAM.

Any answer (suggestion) would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You in advance! Great Forum!!

Pete

Download the 32bit version form the MSI website, in the download folder you will see the 64bit is included. (it's not officially supported by MSI but it will work fine).
For the latest Intel Realtek and NVIDIA go the website and download the correct version for the OS and the language.
What BIOS are you running and what Firmware version.
Is the Windows Version original, if not there is the answer for you.
If it's original make sure to delete the complete partition table and clear the HDD, then select to full empty partition or make one and install Windows.
Do you have any external hardware connected when installation fails for the 64bit windows version.

For BIOS & Firmware version check my private location to get the latest for the MS-1722 ID1 or the MSI GX-720 ID2 version.

that's the one i got, might even be the same seller. You have to get a cable adapter (to use a tv jack from the wall) or one of those small mobile antenna.

Near as I can gather, demand for memory has been doubling for some time now, but production has failed to keep pace. Guess it will be some time before I upgrade mine. :(

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. I found a lot of great info so far.

Anyway, I was excited to hear that I could upgrade the CPU to a Quad-Core and increase the memory past the 4GB limit I read on other sites.

Before i head out buying new parts, I should be able to make all the upgrades listed in the first post on a pre-configure/non-barebones GX720, right?

@dimartino21

Because DDR stands for Double Data Rate you must do 2x 400=800 and that's the correct answer.
You might try this tool for more hardware related info and details.

Yep, the GX720 is MSI's retail edition of the 1722-ID2 chassis, so the upgrades listed will work no problem including the Quad core editions (Q9000, Q9100, QX9300), and memory configurations (Up to 4GB x 2 = 8GB DDR2). The 1722 is a beast. Just make sure to grab the newest BIOS and EC files and have at it. ;)

What do you mean turned into a GX720, I had a 1722 ID2 that I upgraded the GPU to a 3870, Bought a GX720 gaming keyboard, The silver touch sensor panel. The LCD was already the WUXGA version so didnt need to upgrade that. I even got the silver strip that goes across the palm rest. It looked just like a GX720 and preformed just as good as a GT725.
Not sure about the driver issue as I am a fan of ATI. I know someone in this forum will help you out on this issue.
