I purchased a 1722 and this will be my first barebones laptop. I intend to read this thread to get an understanding of where to begin. The search feature in the forums is not too friendly. To get the most value of a build, can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks....

Well if you bought the same model I did, you will want to start with a cd drive, unless you have a way to install a Operating system via usb. Any sata slimline cd drive should work. If your trying to build as cheap of a laptop as possible I would see if you can get a p7350 cpu 2gb of ram and a hdd. Thats the bare minimum to get it up and running. A cd drive and wifi card will make things a bit easier.

I did buy the same model. I have purchased all the parts with the exception of the ODD. Did your model come with a bezel for the ODD?

No unfortunately it did not come with the bezel, but I don't plan to install a cd drive. I'm going to install a second hdd. I think rockcomputers sells the odd with bezel, but its like 70$ shipped.

Well I ordered the Sony Optiarc ODD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827118017. Question, this drive does not include a cable. Do I need to purchase some type of mini-sata connector? Or will I be able to use the motherboard connectors of the 1722 for the install. Thanks and sorry for so many questions.

In the box there should be a small silver bracket thats provided, that will be attached to the end of the cd drive that slides into the laptop. You won't need any cables, just a screwdriver.

whats the general consensus on a tv tuner for the 1722 ID1? I know I have seen some avermedia mini pcie that some folks have tried, but really havent heard good and bad cons from it. What software did you use with it? Can you buy a complete kit(the card, antenna, express slot style remote)? thanks.

I think the consensus was its, pretty pointless to have one. Between tv shack and hulu I haven't really watched tv for several months now.

Hey, if anyone is looking for parts, I found a guy on eBay that has a battery from his 1722 for sale. He also says to let him know what parts you're looking for and he'll create an auction for it.

Sorry, was in a rush running out the door.

I was looking for the part number for the palmrest, i recently picked up the id1 but I love the look of the id2 and wanted to try to switch them out.

I did find this on ebay, but it is expensive and it is in Australia.

By the time it would reach me here in the US it would more than likely damaged

strange how you managed to find that dudes post tom.....strange indeed.. however i think that regarding the gx720 parts sources are drying up so its up to you if you wanna take the jump or not. either way for a palmrest with brushed aluminum its not gonna be cheap

I just installed a recommended CPU and one section of RAM into a 1722 (ID1) for the first time. The CPU is a P7350. When booted, the "Press <Tab> to switch to post or <Del> to run BIOS setup is displayed. When those keys are pressed, nothing happens. Is a BIOS flash required to recognize the P7350?

No odds are you need to reseat your memory and cpu, no bios update is needed for the p7350.,

Multiple RAM (OCZ 2GB PC2 6400) in both slots did nothing. Back to the CPU to adjust the CPU.

Just to be clear. I only have a CPU and one bank of RAM installed, no operating system, HD, etc. I should be able to enter BIOS setup, correct?

I hit the Tab key during boot and it shows my CPU Type: Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU P7350 @ 2.00GHz

    Press DEL etc...
    Press F12 etc...
    Press F11 etc...
    Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
    4096MB OK

Nothing else. I can't enter the BIOS Setup. I have reset the CPU and adjust the RAM around. Not a good night.

    Hey Cobra,

Have not had a chance to play yet. Trying to get this 1722 running first. When I hit the delete, it brings up the BIOS Version: CPU Type

    Entering SETUP...
    Press F12...
Press F11 key for Boot Menu
    Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
and my stick of RAM OK

I press the F11 key, nothing. It just keeps looking back at me.

borderlands actually runs suprisingly well on my id2, im really really pleased with its performance, havent tried mw2 yet but thats a different story.

@Az try removing everything from your machine that you dont need, wifi, other cards etc, try even removing hdd, as for the ram idk, ocz ram has known problems with this computer, its best to use G.Skill ram, so thats more than likely your problem, do you know anyone else nearby with a laptop that you can snag a stick from real quick for a test?

wish i could offer a better suggest a better alternative, but that processor "should" in thoery work, though i cant confirm that.

yeah funny story about that man, ive gone through hell trying to get one of those damn laptops, and by the time i get it the 5800s will be out and itll be obsolete!!!

    =[

the first one i was gonna get on amazon for 1100, the advent 6555 with blu ray and quadcore, i bought it, apparently it was in the shipping process, then weeks later nothing!! and they quietly refunded my money with no explanaition, i guess the amazon retailer wanted to keep it afterall

the second was a monetary issue, i was scraping everything together, counting change to try and come up with it, and then i gave up on that one which was a gt725 for the third option...

which was the avent 7555, no blu ray =[ but a quad again, compared to the gt725 with a p9500 and other goodies but the price was less and more acceptable at the time, but apparently DHL is retarded and doesnt like reading addresses correctly, so they sent it back to currys, and currys apparently doesnt know what its independent departments are doing or have very good communication. Given they were the nicest retailers ive ever spoken to, very professional, they werent really that helpful, untill my final call when they tell me my laptop was shipping 12 days prior. so now its lurking around somewhere, im hoping when it reached my po box, they actually forward it to iraq, where im deployed to now...

    The Odyssey Continues....

yeah fun rant, but then again if you paid 1200+ for something and nobody could give you a straight answer what the * is going on, id imagine youd be fairly unhappy.

other than that, id like to drop a heads up, there seems to be quite a few cards moving on ebay recently, almost won a 3870, winning bid was 154 something, and saw a 4560 for a decent price... not sure on the 45 series for performance, but if the 46 performs quite well, id imagine the 45 wouldnt be too bad either.

Sorry I did not know that it had brushed aluminum, I thought it was plastic.

If the auction is still up on this sat 1/2/2010 I will buy it (out of town right know, with no access to my fun money to see what the balance is), post the touch bezel as well and I will get that also

I'm curious, has anybody tried the intel extreme tuning utility on the GX720? I tried it, and it said another performance tuning application was interfering, but I am on the latest bios, does somebody using 1.0S want to try, especially for quad core?
