May be that's because you are using an ES CPU

the XTU will not work on msi laptop's because of lack of bios support for the XTU. -
I took my 1722 to a local computer shop and no luck. I purchased this off of ebay and the seller says no returns. I will dispute using ebay and paypal. If no luck with dispute, any other suggestions?
-
Purchased what ? the cpu ? Paypal suck , got screwed on ebay 3 weeks ago and paypal haven't done S*** so far ! good luck
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
Ebay/paypal seems to be a hit and miss. I never have had any problems, but I always worry whenever I use it that I may be the next "unlucky" customer.
-

I know you can't get into the bios, but what happens when you don't hit "del" key and go straight to installing/loading windows? -
To transfer money and buy something is a blast , but when it comes to Customer services it isn't the best .. they told me they will investigate and get back to me within 5 working days .. guess how long it's been ..... i'll be very very careful when buying expensive products on ebay from now on
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
I suggest using a credit card via paypal when buying expensive items. It's much easier that way. -
yeah ur right , would easier to do a chargeback etc.
-
I'm just curioius, just how was this processor "recommended"? As far as I know, the 1722 uses the PM45 chipset, which doesn't support the P7350.
-
um the p7350 is a socket p cpu so not sure what you are talking about and its on the supported list.
Ahzroe are you still trying to bootup the laptop without a hdd? Have you tried doing a bios update yet? It may not be needed for the cpu, but your ram is not on the supported list. supported parts -
Well no offense, but just because they're the same socket type doesn't mean they're compatible. The list may be from MSI, but that doesn't mean it's not in error. The cpu and controller chipset are made by Intel, and their specs say otherwise. As I said, the 1722 uses the PM45 chipset
and the P7350 isn't on Intel's valid combo list http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=35515. -
I take it you don't know about oem cpu's...because not a single oem cpu is on that list including my p7450 which works just fine, without even a bios update. Lets try to keep it siimple and not pull unsupported facts from intels website, just about any socket p cpu should work as long as the bios supports it and thats been proven already.
-
Sorry, was trying to be helpful. I do know about oem's, and you're right, IF the bios supports it, then yes it should work. But then there are always exceptions.
-
I am out of town and on my cellphone. I plan on starting to work on this when I return. A bios update would require another cpu purchase and maybe getting a bank of GSkill. Which I have no problem doing if it works. Anyone with good rep interested in troubleshooting?
-
any socket P processor will work with the PM45 chipset. Its the new socket for i7 that warrents the new chipset. So P7350 should be fine, although i'd say thats underpowering the gx720. go quad core
reguarding the bios update, i'd say get a very cheap old socket P procesor, maybe a socket P pentium dual core (around 50$), and cheap stick of ddr2 (reguardless of size, around 10$), and a usb flash drive with MS-DOS on it so you can flash it. that should do it. -
ahzroe are you in CA?
-
I live in Ohio.
-
bummer if you where in CA I could help more.
-
UPS doesn't go from Oh to Ca?
Jk..... -
Well sure it does but you might be more comfortable if you flew here
-
Hey Razbus i listed the palmrest and touch bezel on ebay sorry it was a day late.
-
anyone know if there is a bios version that allows tweaking of the ram timings ect. There was one for the 1651 but not sure if there was one for the 1720
-
heyyy
im wondering if any one could help me i bought a hdmi to av cable does any one have any clue about how to config it ive tryd everythinggggg.. http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp230/Jimmy21/IMG_0109.jpg -
dimartino21 sometimes it depends on what tv you have if you have an older tv sometimes its not compatible.
-
I guess I will attempt different RAM and possibly a different CPU.
This RAM http://cgi.ebay.com/Kingston-KVR800D2S5-1G-DDR2-800-1GB-128x64-SODIMM_W0QQitemZ290386756264QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item439c6642a8 and this CPU http://cgi.ebay.com/CPU-Intel-Mobile-Pentium-T3200-2-00-1M-677-SLAVG_W0QQitemZ220531041836QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCPUs?hash=item3358aca62c are on the supported list.
Thoughts?? -
well this it what i think is the best ram for the gx720 .... im running it now ..haveing no problems with em http://cgi.ebay.com/Kingston-2GB-DD...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_2?hash=item3a56591113
and the cpu is pretty good for the price ...but could get that better perfomance from a intel P8600 -
Thanks Dimartino21, but I am looking for the cheapest, fully supported CPU and RAM just to try to get my machine to boot. I am having some issues.

az get G.skill, no joke, my ddr2 800 ram oc'es to ddr 1000 like a champ with no complaints. reliable and cheap as all hell.
Get it from newegg, the stuff works like it was made just for this laptop. if you wanna go cheap, supertalent works in this laptop while maintaining decent CAS latencies. -
Memset my friend, however still locked out one of the timings, cant remember which. -
Not really looking to run yet another program just to overclock.
-
I'm sure you can do that through the bios
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
he wants to adjust the memory timings, something that's not possible with the newer bios updates. -
I'm on 1.10 which is the latest and it's possible to set the SPD to manual to adjust the timings
-
I'll have to try it then.
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
lucky, i wish msi would show the 1651 some love. -
BIOS Z : add bios password & F3 recovery thingy (i think)
BIOS Y : brightness supposedly improved
BIOS U : disable power button when flashing
BIOS T : improves ram compatibility and memory clock
BIOS 1.10 : some energy saving crap
Got them all just in case
shame you can't use the same bios as the 725
-
>.> I don't see why I couldn't the only difference is the gpu. The model that might have bios conflict issue would be the gt729 since it uses ddr3 ram. I'm gonna try 1.10 right now and post back.
-
mmk well here is the result. Gt725 bios and gx720 bios and firmwares both worked without any problems, even my touch keys worked just fine. There seems to be some kind of conflict between the overclock feature in the bios though with setfsb. Luckily I still had the latest 1722 bios and firmware from Reparque from a few weeks ago. Flashed the bios and firmware seperatly and it seems its the bios that was conflicting with setfsb. >.> another thing that was interesting was that the gx720 and gt725 bios allowed for overclocking up to 24% which is kind of interesting because thats right around the max I can get out of setfsb. I don't recall being allowed to overclock that high though through the bios with my old 1651.
-
Hmm just for reference, there is also another ICS that the GT725 works with i believe (allows the pushing of dual cores p9500 to say 3.3?)
-
>.> Well if my results carry over to other processors, the most stable overclock would be about 3.2ghz. Around 27% overclock seems to be the limit for ddr2 ram laptops. I have a feeling the gt729 with ddr3 ram might have better results.
-
is it still possible to overclock with bios 1.10 for quad cores, or must I downgrade back to 1.0s? I'd rather stay on 1.10, but If i can push my quad core to around 3ghz, i'd dump the bios right away.
-
>.> I don't think you will be overclocking your q9100 to 3ghz any time soon, thats pushing it even fore people with a qx9300.
-
Anyone have a good working motherboard? Mine took a dump ugh......
-
I have whole palm rest with mbo and touch bezel
-

that sucks man, your best luck is to part it out and get a 725, i dont think youll be able to get a replacement board anytime soon, though you can try direct through msi -
I have a barebones ID2 1722 I was thinking of selling it.

alrighty gentlemen i have a question for anyone with an answer! courtesy of mandrake im acquiring a 4850, im planning on dropping this badboy into my 720, can anyone clue me in if a 725 heatsink for the 512 mb 4850 will work with a 1gb version, and if there will be an issue with the extra ram chips?
or... can anyone give me the part number for a 729 heatsink, and do they know if itll fit in a 720? -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
Both the 725/729 heatsink will fit perfectly in the 720 (do you have one? They are has common has unicorns).
The alienware 4850 has 4 ram chips on the bottom of the card, you will have to be creative.... -

sounds like thats gonna be a helluva project, damn i guess i cant expect it to be a cakewalk now can i?
