Check newegg for some gpu memory heatsinks, they usually have some that come with adhesive thermal tape, that should do it, or at most you will have to file them down a little.

No gpu memory heatsinks will work due to the unbelievably low space clearance (it's a very, very, very tight space).
I used that special double sided tape that forum-member "Soviet Sunrise" keeps recommending, forget what it's called (got it off ebay). It does the job excellently. -

what i was thinking, some thermal tape should do it since ram doesnt heat up as much as the gpu.... though i was tempted to make a custom ramsink though theres no space and id have to worry about protecting the board from short circuits.... i think the tape will be a decent idea, worst comes to worst ill test it and if it doesnt work ill turn around and resell the card.
-
>.> I've never heard of just sticking tape on it for heat dissipation, how exactly is that supposed to work?
-
Agreed, seems strange, what about a custom copper plate (im talking thin) but extend them out from the ram and thicken the tips?

Haha strange but awesome idea (Y).
-
Yeah there is a huge difference between the height of the gpu core and ram chips. After changing my thermal paste I neglected to address this, then when I opened the lappy up to clean it a couple of days ago, theres just some flimsy paste between the heatsink and chips.
I'll have to look into something too. -
Pads or a copper strip?

okay so what i was thinking about doing is getting some of those .3mm thick or 1mm thick copper shims, the ones you see on ebay all the time use for the dv9000 heat issue and throw those on the ram for ramsinks, however once again ramsinks really require air to be effective and not too much travells through there.
so heres the idea, what about a thin long shim underneath to contact the chips and then run the shim out and somehow make contact with the heatpipe, now the problem is making any sort of contact with that pipe is gonna be an issue and furthermore if im not careful i can upset the contact with the heatsink to the actual gpu and end up with a very expensive and ineffective paperweight. =[ -
I've seen desktop ram chips with similar heatsinks before. I'm not sure how effective they are but they are not connected to any other heatsink, so maybe it will be effective?
-
Thanks all.... -
Do you have a link to the item you won on ebay? I would try a p8400 just to be sure it works, its one of the oldest montevina cpu's.
-
I will begin to search for a p8400. Thanks Rorschach! -
>.> I meant the cpu, or are you disputing with the seller of the laptop?
-
Sorry on the confusion. I am disputing the purchase of the 1722. Over the holidays, I had a computer shop diagnose it. They provided documentation it could not be booted up, claiming the motherboard as a possible problem. I don't have full faith they knew what they were doing, so I am still trying to get it to work.
The item number of the cpu is 270497965525 -
ah ic, I probably wouldn't have bought mine if I had noticed it said no returns, so not quite sure how that will pan out for you. Still if your down in the southern cal area let me know and I can try and get it running for you.
-
Thanks Rorschach. If the dispute does not pan out, would you be interested in me shipping to you for a look? It would be on my dime both ways and something for your time.
Thanks.... -
Worst case scnerio is you could part out the screen and the gpu and get probably 75% of your money back if you sell the parts on ebay. -
Thanks. I will send you a PM to get things rolling.

the cheapest processor that you can use to test is the t5550, its merom2 but itll work in penryn boards, it was the first id used for my 1722, cost me like $55 last march or so, now itll be even cheaper!
-
I think even the p7350 was amazingly cheap too

so im thinking of an idea here on how to solve my dilemma regarding a backplate for the 4850 i have in the mail, as it seems impossible to get a 729 heatsink, im thinking of getting two 735 heatsinks, since it seems like the card will match up perfectly to the heatsink, now regarding the ram on the backside, i could do a copper mod or use shims or whatever, but what about just using another heatsink just on the bottom for a backplate? the holes are already there and the dimensions should be good enough for it to fit correctly.
now the only problem is getting msi to send me some, anyone know who to contact? id appreciate any tips, ive searched the net and theres no pre assembled solutions, and short of having my own little workshop to built a heatsink from scratch, i have limited options... -
I've heard nacr05 talking about a contact he has. Can't remember his name or how to get onto him sorry, but maybe shoot him a pm.
EDIT: THIS thread may assist you. -

RK "might" be able to help. The only way to get a backplate is to find another msi gpu and rip it off. I tried doing that to my 160m, but the stupid thing wouldn't come off, lol. -
hey i just finshd installing sims 2 and evey single expansion and stuff but the game seems to lag in high and low settings ? could any one help me..its not to much lag but it laggn

was wondering, automatik, if this LCD would better be suited since it doesn't have those annoying clips on the screen. Its glossy too, which I find to provide a better image quality.

Im confused auto, you have a 1722 and 6555 so you have the heatsinks?
-
Ok, gonna take the plunge for RAM. Which of these two should I get?

Okay check it out, my origional idea was to gut my 7555 and pit the parts in my ID2 thus making it a 725, and drop the 9600 into my 7555 for possible resale or computing needs with my more than capable t9400, but now that I have a 4850 in both 512 and 1gb, I need another heatsink set so I can get both running (greed) and then have two awesome laptops. The 9600 cooler looks a bit small so I need a new one, plus if I plan to resale the heatsinks being on there is a motivator for buyers. Which means I pay less for that 4850 overall. Now when I actually get it in then I can start measuring it out, I figure a 3850 heatsink will do, but the 725/29 heatsink is far superior in what it can pull, so worst comes to worst the 512 will get the rigged heatsink and I'll use the better for my 1gb

Nice work. You could even open a thread in the modifications section.

"As you can see in our benchmark section, the performance results do not vary much. DDR2-1200 at CL4-4-4-12 timings offers great performance for a few benchmarks, such as file compression or certain video transcoding tasks. However, in the majority of benchmarks, hardcore memory speeds aren't faster than good old DDR2-800 at decent timings." -
Ok thanks for that. Now I have a major problem. None of my external hard drives are able to be recognized in windows 7 x64, including usb. Esata shows up for like 2 seconds, and then dissappears when tranferring a file.
-
Start > Right click computer > Manage.
Left panel > Disk management.
Do they show there?
Does it show them as installed in device manager? -
yes it does show. However, whenever I try to transfer a dvd image, it freezes up for a couple of seconds, and hands on the progress bar, then says the file could not be found, and the drive is disconneected. This is very frustrating, and I spent a good amount of money to get esata speed.
-
Does it show in computer management or device manager, or both? I just need to know which one it shows in.
And does anything change in computer management when the hard drive drops out? -
-
hey if any one wants a 3870 heres your chance http://cgi.ebay.com/ATI-Radeon-Mobi...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item27aea7f706
-
It shows up in both. If I attempt to rescan........ bsod.........
-
If it definately works in other os's, try uninstalling it in device manager, then restarting, then reinstalling the drivers (let it search for them) if it doesn't do so automatically.
EDIT: Or have you tried death's suggestion of reformatting the drive? -
Automatikjack Notebook Evangelist
Honestly it sounds like there is a problem with the drive itself of maybe a driver issue, don't think that there is a fully developed standard for esata yet, i played with. It myself when I first got my fantom drive, (awesome btw), but xp didn't fully support it, so I went with good ol USB.
Though since it shows up, Theres a good chance that it's just a driver issue, to get the latest drivers for it, goto the intel website and get the intel inf utility, sorry don't have a link, I'm on my iPhone. That should get you the latest. Sorry I can't offer more but it seems that esata is one of those fad technologies that will die with the coming of USB 3.0.
Actually now that I think about it, it sounds like reformatting might be the solution, has the drive ever worked? If not then you may need to just initialize the drive, it's Done in disk management, initialization is required prior to formatting. You can't neccesarily reinitialize the disk, but you can repartition and reformat since your computer is reporting a physical hardware connection and you machine apparently isn't freezing trying to make heads or tails of what's connected to it. -
tried the drive in OS X on the GX720, and I must say, its fast. It works flawlessly. And OS X works beautifully. It runs on only about 400 mb of ram, and is very efficient.

BIOS update was the answer to the quesiton!! You are the man!

hey a usb port on my gx720 has just stopped working what could be the problem?
