I'm selling my ati 4850 on ebay if anyone wants to turn their gx720 into a gt729. It's expensive but vastly better then the 9600m gt.

Why didn't you post a link? :) I suppose it's this one - click. Because this is the only one 4850 :) I really want to buy it! But I see that you don't want to ship outside USA. If you change your mind PM me. I can pay it even today :)

darth, are you selling your entire setup or just the card? cause id be interested in your heatsink.. =3

im still struggling with getting my temps to a reasonable level, even with my little copper shim. It seems kinda low grade so i think i might get another and try that.... i just dont want to be stuck with 60 for my idle temps =[

My core idles around the low 50's. I've seen it go up to high 70's when gaming. It really depends on the room temperature.

The memory is usually around the same temp as the core, sometimes a little higher.

The shaders are always lower then the other two by about 4 degrees, it idles in the high 40's.

I did put a crap load of small little ram heatsinks on the copper pipes and copper plate.

To be honest there's nothing wrong with 60 when idling. The card is made to easily handle that. As long as it's under the design thermal parameters, it will just happily perform.

My notebook cooler didn't really affect the gpu temps at
    all.

I am still keeping the gt628, I need the qx9300 whenever I want to do anything cpu heavy.

    All the alienware 4850's have 1gb gddr3.

I am also selling the almighty 7800mAh 9 cell battery in the marketplace.

Thats much the same as the MSI 4850 idle temps. For some reason everyone has better idle temps than me, but thats probably down to Australia being HOT!

I'm sitting at my desk at work sweating my off.

What firewire audio interface will give lowest latencies on the gx720?

Do i need a mac to get below 128 samples? Now im working on 1024 samples with RME fireface 800, which is ridiculous

I don't really know, but it will give you longest time. Most msi 9 cells are 7200mAh, mine is 7800mAh.

I've been following this thread for about a year now, but never posted. It's nice that everything is consolidated to basically one big guy, but its a pain to read through it all (Makes my eyeballs bleed).

Is there any good sources on picking up the ATI 4850 card (And a what, a gt628 heatsink?) for these guys? or have they all dried up and rely on alienware part outs and lucky strikes on ebay.

    Thanks in advance

Hey Darth! How'd you wind up with such a sweet deal on the batt?
EDIT: I should have Googled like normal, as I just found it here: http://www.provantage.com/msi-957-14xxxp-103~7MST90RY.htm
Probably should pick up one as the price seems ok. BTW, do you pull your batt while on AC or leave it in?

If you really want to torture yourself, you could also lurk around the GT725 forum too! They're based on the 1722.

Anyway the card is kinda hard to come by, and the heatsink more so. You could wait 'till someone parts theirs out, or possibly try RK Computers.

Darth let me know how you want to setup the payment and other details for the battery.

I noticed something strange in my bios the other day, my laptop now says it's a gt729 instead of whatever it said before... I'm quite amused.

As for my temp issues I solved it for the most part, my shim was bugging me so I came up with a solution to remove the gap by changing thr thermal tape to paste for the ram chips, I know it's messy but it gave me that better contact for my gpu and actually game me a considerable drop in temps though my core still reaches 80 in games. I guess it just runs hot, though that. 4850 and a wuxga screen makes mass effect looks so good.

In other news, I've noticed two strange things regarding power, firstly my laptop will not switch my 4850 into low power mode clockwise, it stays at 500/800, but initially it would downclock to 250.... And thr other issue being that my laptop will die if I unplug it during a gaming session regardless of batterty level. But if I start a game on battery it's fine, as well as unpluggng when not in a game...

You an do both on the GX720........ google OSx86........ Works almost complete stock for the system, no modding. I can help you if you want, thru pms of course. I have all the hard work done ;)

Anyway, I may be in the market for a 9800M GS, does it require heatsink modding? Also, just bought some upgrades from Newegg

I am still having problems with my 1722 recognizing an optical disk drive (ODD). I originally purchased Sony/Optiarc AD-7590S-01 as my ODD (see above). Thinking it just might be a bad ODD, I purchased a working drive from Darth (received it yesterday), installed it, booted up the 1722 and nada. Both drives are getting power (green light, door opens and closes). I have re-set the drives 10-15 times. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate as my OS. Everything else is running rock solid.

    ?? :mad2:

Well one more thing I can suggest:

Disconnect your cmos battery for 5 minutes, press pwr button 10 times.
    Reconnect CMOS battery, pwr on.
Flash to latest bios and EC firmware AGAIN. There is a chance that the bios update did not go through as intended. It can't hurt to reflash.

Also, is it true the maximum consumption an MXM card can have in the GX720 is 65 watts? Because I am deciding between 2 graphics cards, both MXM 2.1 Type III

    2. http://cgi.ebay.com/NVIDIA-GTX-280M...emQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item19b9a804a0

The GTX 280M is a way better deal, but will it work? It should fit, MXM 2.1 Type III

And if that doesn't work Ahzroe, try sacrificing a small mammal during the next full moon! :D I'm kidding!!! Seriously though, if the bios reset doesn't work, you may be looking at a mobo issue. :(

Technos, I seem to recall reading on this thread (or possibly the GT725 thread) that MXM 2.1 cards won't work because of the power requirements. :(

If that doesn't work, get out of your chair, spin clockwise 3 times, clap your hands 3 times, sing the chorus to your favorite song, pick the laptop up, run around the room with it on your shoulders, then it should work fine.

Honestly dude if you have replaced the drive, the bios/ec shouldn't matter, I think were looking at a motherboard problem, which unfortunately hard to fix, you might try contacting rk and see if he's able to do something about it. These drives are sata and should be detected without a problem if the bios can't see a new drive that is confirmed working then you have eliminated half the problem. Sorry buddy, can't see any other possible problem.

That's probably my biggest fear with my laptop is the power jack, it doesn't seem like it's all that sturdy compared to alot of other manufacuturers, although there's not many that are supply as much to a power hungry machine like this one, 6+ amps is quite a bit in comparison to other laptops, my acer was like 1.5.

I'd say give it 5 years and we won't even use cords anymore, we'll set out laptops on those induction powermats and charge em that way.

In terms of energy they already have retail models that charge at 80% efficiency!

Would a heat gun work? I believe all I have to do is reflow the connections, as the jack still works when the cord is tilted to a side. Any proper gx720 dissasmbly guide? The link on here doesn't work, so i need a fresh upload.

I think I remember seeing somewhere that its not TI! However using my expresscard with TI chipset doesent make any difference (when using XP). They are both stable.

If you want to be shure and spend you time making music then I would say go for the mac!! I would, if I had the money ;)

However it can be done on this machine if you are willing to take the chance. Rumours are that W7 is turning out ok with a few fixes (disable aspi.sys, wi-fi and battery temporarily).

Theres more info on this thread regarding latencies:

    @ Technos
Here. There are both disassembly guides - MS-1722 & MS-1651.
I had to move it from its previous location. I use free providers and previous one closed my account. They want money :) May be this link will be not accessable in time also, but I'll try to keep it up as long as I can.

Also, about the video updates that you mentioned before - GTX 280 is MXM 3.0b on the pic, so I think either the description is not correct or the picture. Any way both will not work in MS-1722. 9800M GT is MXM 2.1 Type HE, not Type III, which also makes it incompatible to MS-1722.
