No.. DDR2 system and DDR3 system uses different pins, not compatible.

Also, you should check which MXM version the 9600m GT is in,

then look for other cards that support such format.

Hi , welcome to NBR ;)

No you can't replace DDR2 with DDR3 and your best upgrade regarding GPU is a HD4850.

The Gtx280 is mxm 3a or b hence not compatible with your machine which is mxm 2.1 type 3.

Hi guys! I'm still confused whats the difference between a Graphic Card and a GPU ? aren't they the same?
I'm planning to upgrade mine to ATI HD4850 1GB but on eBay those look so big, I wonder if it can fits my laptop?

    Thanks!

doggy, what you need to look for is an ati Hd4850 mobility, they are much smaller and meant for laptops, type mxm into ebay and youll see a massive list of mxm cards, this laptop uses mxm 2.1 if i remember correctly.

i was also thinking that a 260m even a 280m with a different power adapter and battery but still unsure couldnt find if someone checked it or not. I mean it will fit but not sure if the computer will give it enough juice. Doggy i know someone who has a 4850 for sale 1gb version and you will need the gt725 heatsink.

A 280 wont, its possible the 260 wil if theres no cons to it (And i think power draw will be ok)

Now problem is if the machine itself accepts it, nobodys tested it yet,

The 4850 1gb wil work for definate, very good card!

yup i agree wit cata i would get the 260m but no moneys and im pretty sure the 260m will perform better than a 4850 in games thats just me.

edit: well most likely its only gonna be a 5fps difference. if anything might just overclock a 4850 to a 4870 specs :).

what do u think would be worth im getting a gx720 in about two weeks and i have a t9600 right now i would want to upgrade what would be the difference from a q9200 vs a qx9300 and would oem vs es be a big difference?

The big difference is price and clock speed. 2.4 vs 2.5 and that's about it ..

    Get the 92

    Type HE nVidia GTX280 1GB GDDR3 i found that in mxm-upgrade
the slots are the same as the 4850 but im not sure if it puts too much juice into it. i wish i had money to find out if it would work and if the 260m will work.

No the gtx 260 gets crushed by the 4850,

But the 280 may have problems with power as you say.

What is the general point of view on selling my quad core GX720 for hopes of buying a core i7 laptop? If anybody is looking for a nice working GX720, I'm selling mine for 1000.
    Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9100: 2.26 GHz, no temp sensors BUT the system never gets too hot to start with.
1920x1200 LCD, fine no problems one tiny dead pixel in the far right of the screen.
    3gb DDr2 667
    320GB 5400 RPM
    2.0 Megapixel camera

Like i said, im debating selling it to buy a core i7 laptop. Forgot to mention it has Windows 7 Ultimate and Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

    OR

Is there a point in upgrading from q9100 to q9200.

let me know what you guys think!

I need suggestion too guys, should I sell my laptop?
    Here's the specs:
    WINDOWS EXP. IND: 5.9
    => Processor - 7.4
    RAM - 6.5
    Graphic - 6.5
    Disk - 5.9

    Extreme Gaming laptop:
    - Windows 7 Ultimate
    - QX9300 Quad Core Extreme
    - Sony Blu-ray Optical disc
    - 4GB RAM DDR2 OCZ 6400
    - Seagate 500GB Momentus 7200RPM
    - nVidia Geforce 9600m GT
    - Intel PRO 5300 a/b/g/n wireless

It's because, the only thing I really wanted to do is just to change the GPU but it seems rather complicated. So i was wondering if I should sell my laptop?

can somebody with a q9200 also download cpugenie or crystal cpuid and try overclocking (since it has unlocked multiplers) and volt modding? Right now, I am working on my q9100, which I am super undervolting since I can unlock its voltages.
As of right now, I have 6x (1600mhz) running stable at .712V versus the original 1.062V. its load-based multipliers, so I wonder if it will load all multipliers on the Q9200?

OK new question. Does the Gx720 take a gts160M mxm 3 card? draws 60 watts for the whole board.

Also, if i were to get a t9600 and put it in, will it turbo by the full 24% to 3.5Ghz?

yes, however the power draw is too high for the card to run at full capcity, the best 98 series card that can be run in a 1722 is the 9800m GS, and even then people had issues running that card.

Darth Bane had tried something along those lines, but I don't think thats theres any card in the same series that uses the same architecture and lower power consumption.

A volt mod, might be possible to lower power consumption. Though it isn't an option for alienware cards =[

I've seen a bit of talk on this, but does anyone know for sure if a 5850/5870 would work in the ms-1722? Assuming one had a modified heatsink?

The 5850/70 is MXM 3 B and your 1722 is MXM 2.1 3 hence not compatible. The best card for your machine is the 4850 alien

Excellent thread! Thank you for it, I have read damn near the whole thing.

This is a 1722 ID1, purchased last year.

Here's my issue as succinctly as possible:
    • DC Power Jack Failure
    • Replaced jack
    • Upon completion, started laptop WITHOUT hdd first for testing, everything worked as it should
    • Installed hdd, tried to turn on lapptop, no response from power button, no battery charge indicator or other lights at all
    • EC reset, no change, won't turn on, no lights anywhere
    • removed cmos battery, plugged power cable back in, lappy powers up as soon as power is plugged in. None of the left hand buttons are active except w/lan indicator, but w/lan won't activate(or respond to any button presses), hdd indicator shows activity and num-lock and caps lock lights work as they should, but NO other lights come on
    • EC firmware flash(3 times, backwards each step to V4.24, the oldest one I can find) no change
    • BIOS flash up to 1.1, still no change
    • Stripped down lappy again, paying very close attention to see if I missed something(a wire, unseated something, anything), found nothing, still no change
So, at this point what I have is a laptop with no power button, no way to turn on the "hardware" switch for w/lan(or bluetooth), that I can only power up by removing CMOS battery and plugging it back in. I am using right now and it runs great other wise, obviously, I have encountered some type of problem with the EC(as it controls all the peripheral buttons), but I am at a loss as to what to try next.

    Any suggestions at all?

Reguarding the breaking DC power jacks, I had mine break 3 times on me. Here is the trick. DO NOT REPLACE THE WHOLE JACK!. I just cut into my bezel covering the jack area, and a small break occurs in the negative of the jack. Grab some solder like i did, but it may break easy. So i came across this amazing substance called liquid flux. I flux up the joint and resolder, and BAM solid as a rock and works perfect. NEVER REPLACE THE WHOLE JACK.

On the other hand, I haven't been able to get bluetooth to work since that repair.......

Well, I'll try to remember that if it ever gives way again. My problem has now gone further though, I finally found a copy of the original BIOS and tried flashing, it didn't make it! No errors showed, but the machine keeps stopping after the memory check in POST. I am now working on AMI's BIOS recovery so I can at least get it back to running.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

An update: the BIOS recovery hasn't worked yet. The USB flashes but I don't hear any beeps. When I use the "ctrl-home" method, the screen goes blank, the USB flashes, and then nothing happens. Any suggestions on this? I have read MANY threads on the BIOS recovery, the only thing I have not found a concrete answer to is this: what file get's renamed to AMIBOOT.ROM? I have surmised that it is the only file in the download that does not have "real" extension("A1722IG6.10H" for instance), but maybe I am wrong?

That tool won't run on any laptop that's not MSI, I tried on this old dell, but the tool just shuts down after check the hardware. Any suggestions on dealing with that? I thought I had read in the thread for that tool that it should run on ANY computer, but it won't run on any that I have.

Well I guess that's about it(unless anybody has any other suggestions, all it does is stop during POST immediately following the ram count), anybody know where I can buy another mobo for the 1722? I have been told by numerous resellers that they can't sell one to me. How about replacing the BIOS chip itself? Or, I guess I can just buy another barebone and use the hardware from this one, any suggestions on comparable models? It looks like the 1727 actually replaced the 1722, but the MSI MS-171F-IDx seems to have more comparable specs and I am seeing that available for around $400.

I found that I can special order the mobo for around $300, might as well buy another barebone and piece out this one. Anybody got a mobo they want to sell for cheap?

He has been posting with over at the MSI user forum, I asked him about that specifically. Do you happen to have the older version of that software still on your studio15 that you could send me? I think the newer versions have been restricted quite a bit in order to avoid potential issues with other mobo types. Thanks for trying to help, it is much appreciated!

Well the next best solution is to send a USB drive to someone in your states and make him/her fix your USB thingy using the tool.

Only ONE screw and it directly at the back of the drive, it actually looks as if is one of the screws holding the back access panel in place, but actually isn't.

You might try using google/yahoo/bing. Here's a short write up on the differences: iatkos-v-kalyway.

Also there are support forums for both that can offer installation guides and updates. Good luck. ;)

    Try contacting RK Computers

And there's always the possibility something could turn up on eBay.

    Hi,
first of all, excuse me for my bad english an my ununderstanding about this terms xD.

I bought a ms 1722 one year ago, and now i want to change the battery for another "bigger" one. The main problem is that all I see on ebay, genuine 7800mh, for example, has 10.8v, and my original battery BTY-M67 has 11.1v.

Are they compatible or not? Should i look for a battery on the same voltage, or it doesn´t matter at all?

    Thanks a lot
