Thanks for the tip, I updated the GPU driver to 285.79 and reran the 1280x720 3DMark2011 test .... the first run (not in TURBO mode), came in at P2668. For the second run I enabled TURBO mode and scored P2830 (link: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2670QM Processor,Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. MS-16F2 score: P2830 3DMarks)

So haven't broken 3k yet, but will try some OC params to see how that performs.

Good to know, pretty nice scores you have there!

The o/c I can advise you is 700 core - 1700 memory - it is really safe and will break the 3K easily (expected 3.4K)

Thanks, Paul - what tool do you recommend to safely overclock? I've been reading about Svet's tool, as in the thread below. Are there other OC options, or is Svet the only thing going?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/622755-570m-overclock-2.html

edit: ah, appears that MSI afterburner or nvidia inspector will also OC, will need to read up on those and try 'em out.

A question re: MSI skus which come with 2x HDs in RAID0 config. My system (GT683DXR-603US sku) came with 2x 500GB HDs (WD5000BEKT) in RAID0 config.

First thing I did was to replace this with a Crucial M4 256GB ssd, though prior to this I took an image of the stock system (prior to even booting it up the first time) and restored said image onto the SSD.

The first time I booted off the SSD (no other HD in the unit, as I pulled both of the WD 500GB out to try the SSD alone), I went into the BIOS and changed the SATA config from RAID to AHCI. But Win boot cycle almost immediately resulted in a blue screen. I then changed SATA config from AHCI to IDE, w/the same boot result. Finally, set the BIOS config back to the original RAID, and Win7 booted fine.

Upon confirming SSD Win7 boot and testing operation successfully, I pulled the SSD, place the 2x 500GB HDs back in the system, just long enough to break the RAID 0 array.

Replaced the SSD in the primary bay, and left one of the 500GB HDs in the 2nd bay, and that's how I'm using the system now: Crucial M4 SSD boot drive, WD Scorpio 500GB data drive ... with the BIOS SATA config set to RAID mode.

So the system is working now, but question is - should I pursue trying to change the BIOS setting from RAID to AHCI mode? I'm thinking that in order to get the SATA 6Gbps performance out of the Crucial M4, the Intel SATA config needs to be set to AHCI ... yet apparently I first need to modify the Win7 config (the SATA driver, perhaps?), before I can modify the BIOS sata config?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I have one, it is just over 60 days past the purchase date from the retailer. Too late to return to the retailer for an exchange. It began to freeze up on the lower tool bar even after I did 3 complete factory system restores. For some reason now its not doing it anymore. I called MSI to troubleshoot it with the tech department, the problem is I was told they don't troubleshoot problems with customers over the phone. For me, this is weird and also causes me a serious hardship having to send them my brand new laptop for the proposed 2 weeks to a month turn around. In the past I have had other companies use 'go to assist' to access my laptop to troubleshoot it. The MSI tech department service rep said they don't do that, they just tell customers to ship the laptop back to them. What also suprised me was they expected me to pay out of my pocket to ship it to them, this would have cost a substantial amount due to its weight and size. Only after I demanded to speak to a supervisor and explained the situation along with the short amount of time I have owned it did they then sent me a pre-paid UPS label by email for the box. I fear the freezing will return. I have lost all confidence in my new laptop. We shall see..... [IMG]

Guys, i'm thinking about buying 683 with 570 and i7. Anything bad i should know about? What about screen? Is it a usual ty TN matrix? What about battery life on wifi and internet serfing? Noise in office work? Do i need to wait for MSI to create proper driver or i can use the one from nvidia? Any problem with hinges?

i'd wait until mid or end of december for the new revision with gtx 580m to come out so that you could either get that or get the one with 570m for a bit lower.

I just downloaded the nvidia Inspector tool. I noticed there is an option to increase the voltage to 0.85V. Does this help in achieving a slightly higher OC than with MSI Afterburner?

It does anurag1910, you can even get higher to 0.9v by modifying the vbios with svet tune or get the vbios from someone who has done the mod.

You can really get the 570m further overclocked then.

I've never played around with BIOS, and I don't have the heart to start with a laptop that's just 2 months old. :p

Right now, I can run BF3 fine with 700/1400/1700, which I can achieve even with MSI Afterburner. But I assume that the extra 0.05V will be more stable. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was able to run 725/1450/1750, but BF3 crashed after a while. Runs pretty much alright at 700/1400/1750, but I figured the extra 50 from 1700 to 1750 won't really make much of a difference.

With 0.9V, you can clock easily up to: 750/1500/1800 and then start to increasing slowly to 850/1700/1900 which has been achieved by Jame5 from this forum. Apparently, 775/1550/1800 will be pretty stable for sure at least with this vbios. Up to you then, if you are happy with it now, do no waste your time trying to play overclocking.

    simple question:

    MSI 683 series. DVD drive:

    9.5mm or 12.7mm?

Or does this only apply to the size of the HDD I'm installing, rather than the size of the DVD mount location?

raid and non raid model's, to be honest if it's like the gt780 you can just flash the bios for the raid version and it will work fine as the raid is only software and activated via the bios :D

guys, ordered an UK sku of gt683dxr. while trying to register the product, i noticed that the backpanel of the laptop doesn't have any label about the product e.g. sn, model, etc.

should I be worried? other than that I'm pleased with the product.

    cheers,

Hello everyone! I found this deal, and i was hoping i could get some feedback from those of you that are familiar with the model. Its the best price i could find for a system with comparable specs (after the rebate).

    Newegg.com - MSI GT683R-242US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

The only downside i see, is the gpu. Is it possible to upgrade the gpu in this model? Forgive me if this was answered already, but I didn't want to have to fish through 70+ pages. Thanks!

It is possible to upgrade the GPU, but this unit in your link is a very good price including the 160 dollar MSI rebate puts it at 1069.00

The 683 with the 570M GPU is 1349.00 with the rebate at the egg as well.

I honestly think you will be happy with the peformance of the 560M at the price they are offering this unit. but after the warranty is out you can upgrade to the 570M, you will need the heat pipe assy for it as well I believe

Yes you can upgrade though you may need to find another heatsink or heavily modify the stock one for a new gpu. And a 180w or better psu.

yes, vsyc removes tearing. people say that vsync REDUCES ur FPS but for me it has only capped it at 60. for example:

in a heavy smoke explosive ambient in BF3:
    vsync on: 34 fps
    vsync off: 34 fps

in a quiet simple ambient in bf3:
    vsync on: 60 fps
    vsync off: 82 fps

as u can see theres is no actual REDUCTION, just a cap at 60fps. btw beyond 60 only eagles can see the diference...

The Wifi card is located under the keyboard if I recall.

So you would have to remove the bezel (power buttoms etc) and keyboard assy.

Screws are on the bottom side of the laptop

the keyboard has top be carefullly pryed out from the clips located along the top edge as well.

I know the trubo button aka TDE overclocks the bus speed which in turn OCs the CPU and RAM. But does it really OC's the GPU too? I dont see increase in clocks for the GPU.

It may increase the PCI-E freq because it OCs the base bus speed but really, these mobile GPUs arent really maxing out the PCI-E bandwidth even a desktop 590 or 6990 doesnt max a PCI-E 2.0 x16 bandwidth.

Lol yes it overclocks the GPU (in the GT683 series), if you are using GPU-Z you need to look and compare the current clocks, not those stated by the front page (which are the turbo clocks).

However I am not sure the AMD models did overclock the GPU.

PLEASE Help! I've been going nuts for the past few hours trying to figure this out to no avail...

I CANNOT get my built-in microphone working. I uninstalled a few things when I first got the laptop because I thought it was bloatware (I'm quite tech savy) , one being the webcam software. Fast forward to now. I had to reinstall the HD webcam software to get that working. I want to use Skype among other things. I cannot get the microphone working for the life of me.

I've reinstalled the Realteck audio drivers and everything. Gone into device settings, everything working properly. Test microphone in Skype and doing a simple audio file and no luck, nothing...unless I plug in a mic, then the plugged in mic works.

My problem is kinda similar to the guys' below, I would assume.

Anybody have any help for me? It'd be appreciated!

Now I'm looking at purchasing a GT683DXR for $1350. Should I purchase now or does anyone think that a price drop will come within a month? I've looked around and this seems to be the cheapest price by far. Also, is this recommended over the GT683R? Thanks for the help.

If you want it cheaper you could look into getting the 16F2 barebone with GTX570M, none of the flashy lights but all of the performance.

You can either get one built up by a vendor or build it yourself.

Hello, so i just got MSI GT683R laptop (bought it used for 1k€, pretty good deal. It didnt even have single scratch on it and had 750Gb HDD + 120GB Corsair force 3 SSD :D). So far very pleased, runs every game pretty much on highest details. My only concern is the temps (GPU 80c in full load in games). What is the best cooling pad for this laptop? I have been looking Coolermaster pads (U2/U3).

Also is it safe to OC the GPU without increasing the voltage (also what core clock i should expect)? Dont know lot about these laptops since its my first (bought it mainly because i go to army and need to do something at free time). Been building & OCing desktop PC´s for like 13 years tho :D

Also question about the warranty, since the previous owner changed SSD to this, is warranty voided? Noticed that one of the screws had sticker on it and its tampered (GG MSI if warranty is really voided if you swap SSD / HDD :D)

i ordered the u2 and i'll post impressions. I looked at the size of u2/u3 and the laptop, u3 seems to be bigger (3 fans) and twice the price of u2. Looking at the legs of the laptop I reckon u2 is good enough.

or you can always turn on the loud fan mode.

btw, would the latest touchpad driver help the performance? for such great laptop, it has such crappy keyboard and pad.

Im pulling the trigger tonight on either the asus g3053sw-a1 or the msi gt683r-242us. Couple questions though... I've heard MSI has problems with heat dissapation because they have single fans. How bad is it? I need a system that will last me 3+ years, and I don't want my internals fried every couple months. Also, I've heard their fans are really loud. When gaming its not a problem, but how bad are the fans when normal use? Last, how's the build quality? I've heard pros and cons regarding that. Thanks for any and all replies.
