We have not had a lot of heat issues with those MSI machines here, but I would recommend upgrading the thermal compound to help dissipate some of that heat.
These machines are a little louder than normal (especially if compared to a machine like the ASUS G series), but it isn't too bad at idle. Where it is really noticeable is under full load.
As for the build quality, they do have a little higher repair rate than some of the other manufacturers, but they have improved a lot over the last few years since they've put a lot of their focus into these entire systems.

in terms of durability both laptops WILL last 3 years good. but in terms of Hardware holding up, i beg u to at leasto consider the 683DXR with the 570m. 560m will die quicker against upcoming games. i hope i didnt comment too late.
-
I have GT683R and its been great. Build quality is overall pretty nice, and i like the keyboard. There really isnt any heat problems since GPU can operate 90-100c (max 80c on mine, getting Coolermaster U2 so even lower after that). Fans arent that loud even on the turbo mode (expect if you are playing in silent library on something
) on normal mode you wont even hear the laptop running. Awesome laptop tbh, screen also looks so sharp because its 15,6" and 1920x1080 resolution.

Friend has MSI model with GTX 570M and in games its like 5fps faster than my GTX 560M (overclocked on par with it). These days console ports doesnt really benefit that much from extra shader cores after certain level. I tried yesterday overclocking my 560M and it went to 875 core with no hassle on default voltage (maybe more, need to tweak abit more). OC gave me about 3-4 fps boost in Battlefield 3 which should be in the levels of stock GTX 570M. Tho ofcourse 570M overclocks also. Overclocking should not really harm the GPU when playing with stock voltages aslong temps are fine.
I remember when i "Upgraded" on my desktop from GTX 480 to 580, difference was so minimal in games that you could not even see the difference.
Anyway if you have the money, just buy the laptop with 570 (in here finland price difference is ludicrous compared to that what gain you get). -
wouldn't upgrading the thermal paste void the warranty? One thing I learned about laptops is that warranty is pretty important.
that's why I bought coolermaster u2, which I hope would help. I haven't done any temperature test yet. the u2, size-wise, it's just about right for me, because of its smaller footprint.
whenever I game, i always turn the loud fan on, to minimise chances of overheating. in terms of performances, I can ran witcher2 ultra (with uber sampling off) with msi oc on and get decent framerate. But I'm very early in the game. I should turn off bloom as well, read somewhere it helps quite a bit. -

This is going to depend on the game and the settings.
When you bought the GTX580 you bought the same core with 7% more shaders, it was quite frankly a stupid thing to do.
What we are looking at here is 192 vs 336 shaders, that's a huge difference. Then add into that, the 570M can safely overvolt and reach similar clocks to the 560M and going forward the gap between them will only widen. -

Guys I've been looking to get a new laptop for awhile (I'm still rocking an old Dell Inspiron 1520 from 2007) and I think I've stumbled across perhaps one of the best bang for buck deals. Newegg is selling the MSI GT683R-242US notebook for $1050 after tax and rebate with free shipping and no tax.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152266
I think I may pull the trigger on this sweet laptop, but what can you guys tell me about it? Is it a good laptop with a good build and everything? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -
you can't beat the price / performance of the laptop
It is very easy to work on, and upgrade.
Build quailty is decent,
not many laptops in this price range support 4 DIMMS and 2 hard drives.
I think you will be happy with this unit.
Cheers -
Im looking at the same model. I also looked for 570m cards in the event I would ever want to upgrade the gpu, but I can't find them anywhere. Would this model only accept a 560 and 570 card, or could you put in a 580 also?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
MSI are releasing a 580M version for the 17" version which is pretty identical so there is a very good chance.
-
Just so I'm clear... A lot of people have recommended the Force 16f2. Is it pretty much the same thing as the 683, without all the lights and such?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No lights, no turbo, no force 100% fan option.
Same heatsink/fan, same performance (when using normal overclocking). -
This is what I have currently being built by Xotic. I wasn't particularly interested in any flashy lights or stand out looks due to traveling with it to clients and wanting a more clean/professional look.
I was considering one of the dell XPS slim laptops but also wanted something tha was going to be able to play games too so I went with the 16F2.
should be pretty slick though. 95% gamut screen, upgraded thermal compound, SSD & 750gig secondary, 570m and 8 gigs of kingston 1866 waiting at the house for when it shows up.
Can't wait

580m in a GT68x series chasis anyone?

Sweet
Wonder when the barebone will come out
-
Has anyone used the esata port? I have a GT683DXR-603US and can't get the esata port to work. I've hooked up an external drive and it's not recognized, it works on another laptop.
Thanks

Sweet, that means i can upgrade my GTX560M to 580M at sometime when it doesnt cut it anymore

Unfortunately, MSI USA is not planning on bringing the GT685 into the US market.
We are trying to persuade them otherwise, but so far, they are holding firm to that position.
We will let you know if they change their position in the future. -
What could their reasoning possibly be??
does the 580 use a different heatsink design than the 570? I've seen the 6990 ati retrofit where part of the heatsink had to be ground down to fit but I'm curious if the 580 requires such modifications or if it's a direct plug and play swap. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
No, the only difference is an extra thermal pad for the 2 other memory chips.
Maybe there is a shortage of chips. -
Yes I've successfully used the esata port with a Lacie external hard drive on my PowerPro model.

what overvolt tool are u using?

wow nice score you have there! Turns out less o/c than Jame5 but same score. Is it ur max o/c ?

same question... what overvolt tool are u using??

Card's doing very well in your machine
you pleased?
-
What about your 6990m Jame5 ?
-
Unfortunatly I am still awaiting delivery should be with me Monday according to UPS tracking. I have swapped heatsinks with Meaker aswell so I have the 5470 heatsink which should fit the 6990m better but will still need some minor dremel work
Meaker's results have got me doubting my power supply unit as I could just scrape a max of just 4k on 3d mark 11 on that card before it artifact's. And i defo have the 180watt power supply I am going to see if I can get a dell 240watt jobbie and see if it can be modded to fit the MSI.
If anyone done any advice welcome

P4124 was with minor artifacts.

What's that? -
Meaker,
What is your stable/gaming overclock then ?
-
Just got Coolermaster U3 for my GT683R (i7 2630qm + GTX 560M 1.5GB 192bit). Impressive results, all i can say
. Tested with Serious Sam 3 on high details which seems to be nice GPU baker. GPU is overclocked to 900 core.
Without U3:
84c GPU
Around 80c CPU ( can be as high as 84 in some games)
With U3:
GPU: 70-71c (howering)
CPU: 68-70 across all cores
Also the fans are dead silent, very nice performance! -

Think I am going to run it at 825/1650/1920 -
New oficial NVIDIA beta drivers from MSI ;-)

congrats
and you should change your sig

What are the max temps after some intensive gaming meak?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
mid to low 80s full dx11 (dirt3 for example) and OC.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
To give you an idea, max power consumption is 165W in Dirt3 (0.9V) at stock clocks and 175W overclocked.
These numbers are effectively from the wall and include PSU losses. -
I found a video here MSI GT683R vs. PowerPro R 11:36 Shootout - YouTube
about 8:00. It temperature even reach 90 in furmark. But in some other reviews, temperature are not such high in furmark.
confused -

Different chips = differently calibrated thermal sensors + different power consumption
Different notebooks = different pasting application
Different locations = different ambient temperatures -
Hello guys,
so i bought this laptop and its awsome so far!!! I replaced 1 hdd for 1 ssd and installed windows 7 ultimate, everything works fine but i cannot make the webcam work. Any ideas?
I dont see it when i open device manager and no programs that would use it can detect the camera. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
What camera software have you installed?
If none, then look on your drivers disk for the Utilities tab, click it, and install Simple Camera.
Then, make sure you have punched Fn+F6 to turn the camera on. -
Totally forgot about FN+F6, im stupid, THANK YOU alot !!! And sorry for the stupid question.
-

Don't worry you are not the first or last to be caught out by that.
