I think you can probably find a 580m on ebay but it's not going to be cheap at all. From what I've read, with the addition of a couple extra thermal pads on the 2 extra RAM chips on the 580m, it's a direct swap for the 560/570m

not sure if the bios would have to be re-flashed or not.

    580M upgrade from a 560M machine:

    GTX580M (£500)
    570M heatsink + thermal pads
    180W PSU

Now the question is both Dell 580M or Clevo 580M will work ? Because I think someone tried the Dell 580M into the MS16F2 and the card wasn't recognized :( so only Clevo 580M :(

@meaker. maaaan, how did u get an mxm gtx 570m?including its heatsink?thats so lucky

i saw a gtx 580m in ebay yesterday. was around 750$ + 70$ shipping cost to my country. by that price i can buy a barebone of ms-1761 or ms16f2
180 watt power supply is not that hard to get. the hardest is getting the gtx 570m heatsink and the card itself -__-
now i am thinking ati 6970m and 6990m. they are half of gtx 580m

Yep It was bar-code who tried and told that the Dell 580M kept throttling :(

I can get the Dell 580M but not sure if I want to flash with Clevo vbios which could lead to brick the card :s

    @irfan

In the end I got it off James5 who was moving to a 6990M.

If you want to go the AMD route you will need the cooler from a GX660 (best to get the 3 heatpipe version) and do some grinding on it. Along with the 180W PSU ofc.

Anyone know how to reprogram the P1 button? I have looked at SCM but the only options I get are about and exit, nothing to control any settings. I have updated SCM to the latest version and things remain the same.

How exactly do you assign different programs to the P1 button on the DXR? What I really want to do is stop it from opening Windows media player everytime I switch it on.

Also I saw an additional download on the site which is a THX eq. I have downloaded it and tried endlessly to run it but it never installs, at least doesn't look like it has and I can't find it and run it. Anyone know what the crack is with this eq? Is it standalone or is it like a plugin for the TruStudio?

    Thanks

I believe you need to install the system control stuff.

I've just taken all my heatsinks off, cleaned everything with TIM clean, got some new phobya XT thermal pads (0.5mm) and applied those and will see if that has helped :)

Uninstall the nVIDIA OC Tool, then reboot and go into your S-Bar and click on the P1 Setting.

Did this but still have no control over what is assigned to the P1 button.

I also don't seem to be able to flash the BIOS either. Made a USB flash disk but there is no option from the F11 boot menu to boot from USB.

Thank you in advance for those who will reply.

    Hi all,

I searched this thread for "SSD" but couldn't find any post so here is my question:

I'm planning to purchase a 683DX which comes with a 640GB HD. I also plan to add a 120GB Corsair SSD for the Windows OS

I talked with the dealer and they say that they can install the SSD for me, but cannot install the OS on the SSD, which sounds to me like a very stupid statement.

Anyway, is there a way to MOVE the O/S from the 640GB HD to the SSD? I don't mind keeping the factory OS backup there, but nothing more than that. My preferred config would be:

Drive 0: bootable system 120GB SSD for the Win 7 64Bit
Drive 1: 640Gb HD exclusively for data and applications (and the factory system backup).

    Any ideas?

    THANK YOU!
    Alex

unless you purchase the license for the OS, they're not going to install anything for you.

As for moving the OS from one drive to the other, it's theoretically possible if you have software that can clone the drive and resize the partition. Acronis can do this but sometimes it won't like going from a big drive down to a small drive even if it's only a small amount of data.

Hmmm, purchasing an additional O/S license? Why should I? The laptop already has an OEM license which is not tied to the drive, but to the system. It should be my legal right to move it about any HD I decide, for as long as it is inside the system.

I was thinking about something a bit more "interesting" like trying a full recover (before installing anything else) and pointing the recover app to the SSD drive, effectively installing the system there. What I don't know is whether the MSI recover allows you to decide on which HD to install the "recovered" system ;)

    Alex

since I updated the drivers of nividia graphics card I got nvidia driver stopped responding thing happened few times, monitor went black for few secs. and also a blue screen that was saying that the last change of the drivers could cause system instability, so looks like the newest drivers are not good for every machine...? When I went back to old driver everything is working fine so its confirming that aldo my poor pc knowladge I can still do this operation properly.

I think I misunderstood your situation. if you're buying the laptop with 2 harddrives in it, it should make no difference which drive the OS is installed onto.

I thought you already had the laptop and a drive with the OS on it and wanted to buy and install an SSD separately from some dealer.

If you haven't bought the laptop yet and are going to have it configured to use 2 drives, they should install the OS onto the SSD by default. Any other way would make NO sense.

If they still insist only on installing it to the large drive, find another vendor to do business with.

But for instance, when I ordered my machine from Xotic, they had the option to buy the laptop with NO operating system at all or pay an extra $100 to have them install win7 onto the SSD.

In the US MSI branded notebooks are sold with Windows 7 preinstalled and warranty from MSI.

MSI Whitebook models, aka XOTICPC Force, are sold as barebones without an OS and the warranty is from the dealer. An installed OS will cost extra as an option.

In the country where I now reside just about all MSI branded notebooks are sold without an OS.

BTW,MSI made a press release today about the GT685

LOL,they removed the GT685 press release already but ithe info can be found here.
MSI Adds GT685 Gaming Laptop With GeForce GTX 580M Graphics - HotHardware

They replaced it with a GT783 press release.

Amazing how MSI has now put a 580m into their upcoming GT685 series.
Asus is still stuck on the 560m in their gaming laptops since last year! They are falling behind Sager/Clevo and MSI.

Well, the only option I have is with preinstalled OS... It looks to me that the only option I have is to copy the content to the SSD and play with the BIOS then.

I searched everywhere but didn’t find answer to my question: what’s the difference between the model GT683DXR-427US and 489US? Both are the top end model with Blu-ray burner. Though the 489 is marked as discontinued.. But on spec sheet I don’t see any differences. Any idea? Thanks!

Hey guys, been using my GT683DXR for about two months now, and while it's a really good laptop I can't say I'm entirely satisfied with it. Although it does well in the really cool stuff like performance, display, cooling etc, it seems to not do too well when it comes to smaller things like the keyboard and mouse. Well, only the keyboard and mouse. You don't know how much you appreciate a good keyboard and mouse till you use one that isn't too good.
Generally, the keyboard is quite decent, though I have a bit of a problem with the spacing of the keys. Maybe it's just me but it's been 2 months now and I've still not really gotten used to it.
I also had the jerky mousepad problem and while the driver update seemed to fix it a bit. It still jerks sometimes and it can get really annoying.

The biggest problem I've had so far though is with the battery. As someone else posted on page 51 ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi...3r-gt683dxr-owners-lounge-51.html#post7974879) I can't get my battery to charge beyond 83% and the laptop barely lasts 30 minutes on battery. Once it gets to around 13% it automatically goes off, causing me to lose all my data. The problem is I'm in Nigeria and I bought the laptop via someone in the US, so sending my laptop back to MSI will be too difficult for me. Hoping you could help recommend a solution. Also, has anyone else had this problem?

oh man sounds like the battery is not good anymore, either it wasn't broken in properly or it has been always on charge, where the battery should be used and recharge to go through cycles...

actually I am thinking of pulling the trigger on one of these, do you think an external keyboard and mouse would solve the problems you mentioned?

tried upgrading the realtek hd audio driver to the latest from realtek and no supported hardware detected, which is a bit odd. Always thought the realtek chip is used.

    anyone have this problem?

and why do they list the wrong touchpad driver?

Yeah it definitely should. Though I would say you should have feel of the keyboard for yourself. You might not have any problem with it. It's kind of a personal thing. As for the mouse, the jerky trackpad issue only affects a few laptops and the driver update pretty much fixes it.

tried to overclock the 570m and noticed something. the default turbo speeds are 575/1150/1500 according to nvidia inspector (which locks the core speed for some reason), gpu-z and afterburner. But the speeds varied according to usage, idle (low) and gaming (maxed to 575/1150/1500).

With turbo, they're locked to the max regardless of usage, e.g. even when idling.

is that normal? thought i read somewhere that non-turbo speeds are 525/1050/1500.

I managed to oc it to 700/1400/1700 using afterburner and it ran witcher2 fine.

ed, using latest beta driver from nvidia

    did some testing,

turbo off: when gaming, maxed out at 525/1050/1500
    turbo on: always at 575/1150/1500
turbo on + afterburner: when gaming, maxed out at your setting, when idling, they will drop to minimal.
