    12.7mm.

Do you use disks? Do you mind a little extra weight? Do you need the extra space?

hey guys. as we know already it seems that the gt683dxr has indeed a 120hz screen. ive been testing it on games like crysis 2 and while framerates remain the same i do see better smothness. also i see an average increase of 2-3 degrees C in gpu temperature. anyone else has been experimenting with these??

hi, could you, owners of gt683 with 570m, give me some information? How is the build quality? I mean in comparison with, for example, asus G series? And does the laptop support nvidia optimus? I suppose not, I wasn't able to find any info on this. If not, how is the battery life in office/browsing with wifi enabled? thanx in advance

    Hello
I Have a MSI GT683DXR, and i have a problem with Turbo button. After when i press him i got on the screen TURBO On but few second later is TURBO OFF ?? My model has i7-2630qm. Score in 3Dmark 2006 is 16804 ,after overclocking with MSI Afterburner.

build quality is excelent. little to no flex. NO optimus though. yesterdat i was working with civil 3d together with office excel. started working with full battery around 10:30 pm. had 15% left at 1:00 am. thats 2.5 hours on programs that
    use the gpu a bit.

at college, a guy with an asus g aproached me for gaming mw2 and he was amazed at how nice the laptop looked. we switched for a while and the asus indeed has better cooling. ONLY that. i felt everything better with the msi. asus is WAAYYYY too thick IMO. bottomline: get a notebook cooler and msi wins eaassyyyy.

ok, first we need to know ur driver version. so updating drivers CAN be a solution.
now, im gonna tell u something. IF u have ur laptop barely new i strongly recommend a clean install. many of my apps including turbo and intel rapid storage didnt work out of the box. even when i ran 3dmark11 it didnt work. after cleaning things up everything is great. plus i can CONTROL what to install and what not. if u need help i can even provide a guide by email of what to instal and wat now.
but, if ur laptop is already used and u cant reinstall windows, then i recommend uninstalling all msi drivers and reinstalling

important drivers for turbo functionality are: system control manager, overcloking utility (MSI), and the driver itself. all can be found in the driver cd

THX FLapo i forgot install NVIDIA OC Utility. Now is OK. But I have another question how to overlock graphics card. I try to overclock with MSI Afterburner but without any succes, still is 16800 in 3dmark 2006 and 2400 in 3dmark 2011

ok. make sure that the turbo button is ON when applying the desired overclock in msi afterburner. that should enable the overcloking

What would be the cause of no change in the frame rates after applying the OC in the GT680 with gtx460m?
I tried MSI afterburner and nvidia inspector and still no change. The turbo button is enabled before launching the afterburner or nvisp.

I dont know but seeing it as not listed in the default list i would advise against it and no its not natively 120hz. Also unless you can use it for 3D viewing you wouldnt benefit much from it.

Can GT683DXR owners take a look at the CPU clock via a gadget or coretemp and see what clock is set when you just surf the net or typing, nothing that require heavy load.

I set the battery mod at balanced and its always at 2.6Ghz no matter what task i do. When set to presentation, office or battery saving via the ECO Settings it does go down to 1.3 or 800 but only in those 3 modes. Is there any solution or should i just try a fresh windows install?

    Morning all... great thread...

im a new owner of a GT683DXR-465ES (Spanish model), and really looks great. The screen is amazing and the sound is really clear.

One thing, i beleave you guys can help me out, is with the OS thing. I just want to put Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits (i have license for this) but the installation don't work. Finish with an error about hardware incompatibility.

Not sure if related to drivers, but can someone share some knwohow about reinstalling the OS from the scrach. I have the media to install Windows 7 Ultimate (without SP1), perhaps needs the SP1 included to make it work.

Also the Windows 7 Home Premium comes with a lot of bloathware i don't want (can unisntall, but preffer a clean install).

    Cheers

Download any legal working windows 7 and when installing do not enter any key. this will give u a trial period. when u enter desktop go to anytime upgrade and enter ur windows 7 ultimate key. windows will now upgrade itself to ultimate edition and ur done.

    clean install is always best

Thanks for the tip, man. I know about installation methods, was about the fact of installing other versions than the preinstalled one. Anyway, yesterday solved the problem, installed without issues Windows 7 pro 64b and Windows 7 Ultimate, both with SP1 included. Perhaps my original DVD support was bad, or could be the SP1.

    Cheers

Yeah, I was looking for one within my $1200 budget. I just wish I can add a little extra to get one with an i7 processor. Is it possible to upgrade the processor to an i7 after purchase?

@dragon290513 seems like you've owned the G53SW. Verdict?

you sure can although that would break the warranty seal.

The G53SW is quite good but it can be a pain to disassemble it just to add more RAM or a second hard drive. Personally I like the look of it better than my current MSI but well, Asus doesnt offer GTX 570M on any of their models.

    Should I buy the gt683dx with gtx570 and i5-2430m ?
Will this processor be ok ?
I don't want my notebook that will work slower because of that.

    And another question :
Can I change my processor to i7 without losing warranty ?

    Thanks for reply ;)

    Hi!

Just got my 683DXR-423US a few days ago!

I had never OC'd any laptop/desktop before, so this was a first for me (I actually read this entire thread more than once to get the graps of things...thanks to everyone contributing, it's awesome to buy a product and enjoy community tips and references like the ones i found here!)

    SO...here are my first results.

*Using CCleaner to keep Win Startup tasks to a minimum and generally keep things fresh..

(All using Stock drivers for the GTX570m and only MSI Afterburner for OC'ing...3dMark11 for benchmarking and CPUID software for temperature monitoring.)

    1) Stock clocks (525/1050/1500), Turbo OFF = P2238
    2) MSI default ''turbo'' OC (575/1150/1500), Turbo ON = P2493
    3) Clocks set using ref. i got on this thread @ (700, 1400, 1800) = P2963

Am I wrong or is there no difference in GPU temperature (with turbo fan ON) between a default OC (max. 70 celcius) and and the one i got at #3?

How safe is it to push the clocks past the point i reached (700/1400/1800)? Will the system simply become more unstable or is there a risk for damaging the hardware itself (aside from the increase in temp...)? Speaking of temp., can anyone tell me the ''max safe temperature'' my GPU (GTX570m) should stay under when OC'ing?

Finally (i know i'm asking lots of info at the same time...) what would be your suggestions in order for me to reach better 3dmark results? Will i really see a big difference by using the 275 drivers from laptopvideo2go (don't want to put in the 280 and loose brightness control), or should i stay with stock drivers until Nvidia releases the next update for the 570m?

Thanks for all your answers; looking forward to keep on reading this thread and optimize my laptop for a loooong time!

    @piotrrs11

The i5 processor is limited to 8gb of ram, whereas the i7 is able to reach up to 16-32 (Strange...it say 16 max on the box of my 683DXR, but 32 max on their online specs flyer... MSI Notebook Official Website.

If you're thinking of getting more ram in the future and extend the life-span of your laptop, or if you're using it for gaming or other high-demanding tasks, i'd suggest the DXR model with the i7 inside.

As for replacing the laptop's cpu, i can't help you! Maybe somebody else has advice on this (i'm curious to know as well...)

    Hope this helps! Cheers.

    1. you should see a difference in temps of 8-12 degrees c when going with 700

    2. 720/1440/1735 is good without any artifacts. 1800 is memory overkill, no fps benefit against 1735. this setting tested with many games and runs great.

    3. excelent question. skip the whole 27x.xx series and install 285.27. brightness controll remains operative, while giving u 2880 3dmark11 (turbo on/stock clocks). even better performance increase in games like crysis 2 and more.

    4. uhhh temps.... i really can answer this one. its like we have almost 40 pages of our notebook and nobody cares about saying so.
well ill say it as im not afraid nor embarassed...

    normal idle: 40-48 c CPU 45c GPU
Load turbo stock: n/a CPU 83c GPU
Load Turbo OC max: n/a CPU 91 GPU

max GPU temp ever reached 92c... is it safe? i dont now. nobody tell me nothing LOL

ohhh and something else: reporting error. my disk just froze and had to hard reset. first time ever happened. restart seems to be back to normal.

    @Flapo:

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Just tried your suggested clock settings (still using stock 268.9 driver).

    - @ 700/1400/1800 (my old setting) : P 2963
    - @ 720/1440/1735 : P 2995 (32pts increase)

Will keep these new settings for now, before jumping on the new official Nvidia drivers when they arrive.

What program would you suggest to monitor my FPS rates in games?

Also...knowing these are the marks we are getting from a relatively new and stock configuration (between 2200 and early 3000's), what would you guess will be the top (safe) marks we will be seeing on this card after a year or two of new driver releases? Is it ridiculous to hope for a 4000-4500 score with future driver revisions and clock changes?

I get all sorts of artifacts on those settings. At 688/1375/1675, I get no artifacts...maybe my gtx 570m is just not as OC capable. =(

Regarding Artifacts (nature and causes), i found this article helpful : Diagnose video card problems by comparing with example corrupted screens

Do you get them in games or rendering software or are you experiencing issues in simple OS environment and startup sequence?

No visual issues so far on my 683dx.

    Hey,

I've just read through the whole thread and two thumbs up for the helpful community that these laptops have! I'm planning on getting one myself and I'd have a few questions I have not seen answered yet:

    1. With the classic config (stock processor, stock gpu, etc.) would it matter to go with a RAM module with a higher clock?

    2. I have seen a few laptop retailers here who offer customized gt683dxr laptops. That's neat and would definitely be the way to go, but I am planning to buy one while on a business trip in the US (I live in Hungary) and I wonder wether I could have a personal "store-pickup" instead of posting. I will visit New York, Washington, San Diego, so is there a pick-up point or something like this?

    3. In case I go with a slightly customized (like ssd, instead of hdd, more ram, etc) MSI gt683dxr, would the 1 year global warranty still aply? I have official MSI partner in my home country, so service there should mean no problem..

    Thanks for any answers/insights!

for fps monitoring i use the native msi afterburner server. if ur using msi afterburner, then go to main screen and go to settings. the choose the monitoring tab. in active hardware monitoring graphs schroll down and choose framerate. then click a check over Show in on Screen Display. a message should appear. now when u run a 3d app frame rate will appear. u can also choose to show temps, and if u have a logitech gaming keyboard u can send the data to the lcd screen of the kb.

i believe that when officially suported drivers come out, stock clocks may be reaching almost 3000, and overclocking some 3600 or maybe a bit more. remember synthetic benches are not all. actuall driver optimization for games do the difference. example: stock driver ran crysis 2 at 35-45 fps but didnt look so smooth, 285's ran it at 40-50 but the smoothness is waaaay better.

also, future updates for our card may happen, perhaps voltage tools, or even maybe release all clocks (just guessing) since the architecture is the same as 580m. who knows...

    1. The faster clock speed on the memory will give you a marginal performance increase, particularly with memory intense applications, but don't expect a substantial difference.

    2. If you want it customized, it would usually be better to have it shipped to your location in the US because if you pick it up you will have to pay local sales tax which can get expensive. We can hit the dates that you will be in any of those cities.

    3. As long as you have it customized by a dealer that is under contract with MSI as an authorized BTO (Build to Order) dealer, and the upgrades are on our invoice, your warranty will still be valid worldwide.

just found out that I cant turn on both the turbo and eco settings at the same time, turn on one will set off the other.

I read on the GT780 thread that they can change the function of the P1 button as they please, can we do that on the GT683?

That is the idea. When you are on battery it will downclock your video card, so you can't use TDE at the same time.

You can program your P1 to anything you please, but that still won't make TDE work in battery mode.

No point in going turbo in battery mode as the GPU is locked to the low power state anyway.

No what i meant is the eco settings have one for gaming right went i first press it, so i think it would go with the turbo button but sadly no. I plugged in my laptop most of the time and set it either in balanced or high performance, why would i use the battery saving mode :(,

And the P1 question has nothing to do with the above confusion =.=
