The Update program is a bit handy...update a couple of drivers recently with no fuss or muss. I'd keep it.

But.. I use Kaspersky AV, so no need for the Titanium 2012 AV (Trend Micro). Uninstalled. Splashtop is just a browser extension that was barely useful to me at best. Uninstalled.
Easy Viewer is a visual file tool to organize files by subject matter. I uninstalled it.
Video Genie is a light utility basically to adjust the monitor lighting (brightness) to optimize for vids/movies. Power DVD does a better job of it. I uninstalled it.

So...check them out, but IMHO all but the Live Update was bloat, fuzz, fluff.

    Hey there
    I have GT70 with GTX670M , is it possible to buy a GTX680M and and upgrade my gt70 with it ? or should I buy a new gt70 with 680M ?
I mean here is it the same MXM in the 680M and my gt70 ?

If it plays out like the GT780 series, probably not, least not with the GTX-680 provided by MSI. When attempting to go to the MSI GTX-580 (produced and sent direct to them from nVidia) in the GT780, something proprietary was done which would have required a GT783 mobo to resolve. The GTX-580M would only perform at 570M speeds when used with a GT780 mobo. Some folks were able to do so using GTX-580M cards produced by Alienware and Sager, but these were hampered with throttling issues, and the 'ThrottleStop' program had to be used as a workaround.

Rather than dealing with throttling issues or trying to aquire a GT783 mobo, I opted to move up to a GT783 for a throttle-free GTX-580M solution. I am guessing the same will be the case for the GT70 series, and I suspect a designation such as 'GT73' for their GTX-680M model. Whatever the designation, a simple GPU swap will probably not work in spite of it's MXM specification. In otherwords, and if history repeats itself, an nVidia produced GTX-680M on a GT70 mobo will probably only perform at GTX-670/675M levels.

Due to the expected performance increases the GTX-680M will bring, I too am anxious to see what unfolds here. We will see soon!

    :)

Are we able to change the video card in the MSI GT70? I thought we could not change the video card in a laptop

No one should be able to change the video card in terms of upgrading them past anything that is offered in that laptop when it is offered.

Example: If the GT70 came with the 670M, 675M and 680M and (again all hypothetical) there was a 685M or something higher for the GT70 then you may be able to upgrade to one of those cards.

But, for example, if you have a GT783, no one should expect to be able to just upgrade to the 680M.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but it should not be expected to be done because with each new technological advance, there comes some new challenges and changes that may make it difficult to install the latest GPU into a 2-4 year old system.

These laptops do offer a discreet GPU in an MXM slot type and, sure you can pull the card and try a new one to see if it works but the manufacturer won't be held responsible if you blow up your system doing such an upgrade.

Ok, understood. I just purchased the MSI GT70 with the GTX-670M. When the GT70s with GTX-680Ms are available, am I able to swap out the GTX-670M for the GTX-680M?

Not likely if the GT70 series follows the same path as it's predecessor, the GT780. Please see my previous post HERE. Your current mobo may make a GPU swap prohibitive. It may require the swap of BOTH the mobo and graphics card..... which would be a very pricey proposition. Truth is, no one really knows right now, as the GTX-680M is yet to be release...... BUT, we will know soon (perhaps the end of this month) when we can get our grubby paws on some of these units.

If you really want GTX680M then wait for it to be release. read Striker's post you may need to replace both mobo and GPU because the wattage requirement maybe different.

MSI will not sell you just the video card, just like people were asking to buy GTX580M from MSI but never get one from them.

GT60 uses S-Bar just like GT70/GT780, also you need install nVidia OC tool:

560M machines can handle the 580M and 570M.

The only difference was a rework for the 580M cards that you could do yourself. You can kiss your warranty goodbye though.

AT any rate maybe it will use the same chasis and that means a plug & play heatsink for the GT70 and GT60 owners.

But the 7970M has initially not worked in the GT series however.

Also the GX lacks dynaudio speakers but gains at least a second digital monitor output (it can support up to 3 displays).

You may need one of the special 7970M card for the HM series that will bypass the integrated.

I have a fairly odd problem and was wondering if that is intentional (probably not) or not.

The touchpad on-off key below the space bar goes on and off when I press certain parts of the notebook.

For example it will react to pressing the bar below the keyboard (the slightly tilted one) anywhere near it.

It will also react on pressing next to the touchpad on the left up to about one third of it.

Here's a picture for better understanding: [IMG]

Is there any way of disabling the button? Is this intentional or a problem everyone has?

There has to be some way, it can be a real pita sometimes and I REALLY dont wanna go through the hassle of replacing my notebook.

Hahah omg, I wish the GT60 had the touchpad disable button instead of using the hotkey.

Also I am not sure if I asked this before here or not, but anyone have slow input when using the KML software to change the keyboard lights?f I change the mode or select colors, the software takes like 2 seconds to respond to changes. Wondering if this is normal, or a cause for concern that my GT60 isn't in top condition.

Don't mean to stir up the place. But let's talk asus g75...

I am looking into either the asus g75 or the msi gt70.
Both have the i7 3610qm, 16gb of ram, and GeForce gtx 670m.
Where I am, they are BOTH $1999.99 as well. So it seems to be a hard choice to make. Of course, you are gt70 owners and will probably praise it over the g75, but please, explain to me why it's better. Move me. My goals are: battlefield 3 maxed, Starcraft 2 maxed, borderlands 2 maxed and etc. I like the matte look o the g75, so it's got that goin for it. But please tell me, tech-wise, why the gt70 is better, how 2 64gb sata raid 0 whatever is better (I'm a little out of the tech loop). And so on. Can I upgrade the gpu down the road? Yadda yadda yadda. Let's hear it. Originally the gt70 was 1999.99 and the g75 2199.99. Then recently, the g75 dropped to 1999.99. So it's a dead tie so far. Thanks guys. Hopefully I can join you on this forum soon enough as a fellow gt70 owner.

I wanted to ask if the GT70 has a plugin for the keyboard to use it as Alienfx from alienware, it would be so cool if you can make the keyboard dance with the music, im deciding between this one and a g75, and im really curious if there is an option in the setting of kml or if there is a plugin for windows media player, winamp or itunes, or any other media player that can help make a light show with the keyboard, :D

I don't know why people are interested in gtx 670m or 675m machines but at the end of the day in 2012 gtx 670m or 675m is like buying a 9800m gtx in 2010 when an amd hd 5870 is out or the gtx 480m is about to come out takeaway the differencce of direct x.

If you want the most power hungry cards out on the market then the 670m or 675m are that single gpu wise, 7970m takes far less power and is double the performance of the 675m on games like max payne 3.

    Google Translate

Its quite funny as a gtx 680m is going to be over twice as fast in games then a gtx 675m considering this.

I don't have a GT70, but i have the GT60 which is basically the same computer. I chose a MSI over an Asus because I did not like the look of the Asus' laptops, the raid 0 makes it faster that just standard drives, and the gtx 670 over the 660, along with various other personal opinions. People have been able to upgrade the gpu, but it requires modifying the heat sink in most cases. I would also not go with a g75 right now because people are experiencing bad workmanship on some computers. http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/669060-g75-many-problems.html#links

Hey guys, just got a GT70 base model, with the 670 and 750gb drive, i'm looking to get a nice SSD any recommendations, something alittle larger maybe 180gb+
i've heard alot about the Corsair Force GT's and Intel 520 series, but im looking for price to performance ratio as well, as far as i know its hard to beat the Corsair Force GT, has anyone used this drive with the GT70? and if you guys could tell me what SSD's your currently using for compatibility purposes that'd be amazing! also any troubles installing fresh copy of Windows 7 ultimate? i've already downloaded all the drivers from MSI

Thanks in ADVANCE! sorry for the crude typing skills

I have run into another really enoying situation.

I am using my gt70 mostly for playing SWTOR. When I alt tab out of the game I can't load a web page. I have to restart the computer after using an online game. Browsing also seems slow on IE and FF. Recently had issues with adobe flash too. Not sure what to do. I am thinking I should restore the system.

    Any suggestions?

Also I don't know how to reformat since there is no windows copy just the stuff on the hard drive. First PC I have had in about 7 years (this machine is really making me wonder why the hell I even decided to do this)

Apparently there's a newer ver of the GT70 which comes with the 680M.

Does that leave any love for us GT60 owners who might be looking for GPU upgrade further down the road? :(

Hotkey is ok, come on... dunt be lazy.

My KLM works the same, think it's normal. Usually I just leave it a static uniform cyan setting... the wave/breathing (+ multi-colour) modes are just distracting from the killing action in Diablo. ;)

Same here; the short delay doesn't bug me at all. All cyan is my choice also. The wave action is bling that I simply don't need, but I suppose Steel Series got enough demands for it to incorporate into their keyboards. That, or one of their execs thought it was cool....lol.

    1. How's the gameplay on SWTOR? Any lags? What time of day are you playing? Internet peak times? Could be your provider is at fault. I would go to Speedtest.com, test your internet speed and go from there (test at the same time of day you normally would be playing). I have also heard that a funky Active X can cause these symptoms, but I don't recall any solutions being given (big help, huh?).

    2. I use a portable 500GB drive for my system backups (the F3 Recovery feature on the laptop is for restoring it to factory defaults, thereby losing all other data). I use Acronis True image to make the backups. If I need to restore the system, I just hook up the portable drive, boot with the Acronis recovery CD and follow the prompts; pointing Acronis to the portable drive for the backup image. It does all the rest, including a quick reformat if necessary.

    Hey folks,
Great thread. I got my GT60 004US a few weeks ago, and am liking it so far. No problems with the keyboard as some have mentioned.

I have a question for those that have updated their BOIS. What's the difference between the 10A (non-RAID) and 30A (RAID) BIOS? My machine came with 500GB drives in RAID, but I've since dismantled that and installed an SSD. I'm thinking that one has the SATA controller set to AHCI and the other one has it set to RAID but are otherwise the same? I need to update the BIOS to enable VT-x.

It's a gaming laptop....dedicated graphics card. I don't know of any gaming laptop that was intended to run on battery when playing a high(er)-end game. By design, it has much more power requirements than a normal laptop.

Also, what graphics option is it using when playing Diablo 3? If the power light is white, then it's using the HD4000 graphics chip; if orange, then it is using your graphics card.

NO, nope, uh-uh, don't, stop, halt, cease, no need,...

Doesn't make any diff as far as optimizing power for gaming. You WANT that nice trickle charge there to keep the battery charged while you work/play.

Just realize that it is a gaming laptop that is designed to run on regular power (with the battery intact). The battery is there really just in case power is not available or otherwise necessary to run on battery for a short time and for less power intensive operations.

Hey guys I have some questions regarding Super Raid. I hope some of you can provide me with more information. Looking at this disassembly video : MSI Notebook GT70 --- Disassembling - YouTube

I see that the main hard drive setup has an adapter called the "HDD Board" which can have either a standard SATA hard drive connector, or the SUPER RAID dual mSATA connectors installed.

With the regular SATA connector, the 2 main HDD slots can run in a RAID setup?

If someone say, bought the upcoming GX60 with a preinstalled Super Raid board, and wanted a regular SATA connector board, would it be possibly to buy one from somewhere?

    Thanks.

The GT70 offers an option with 2x750GB HDDs (one in each bay) in a RAID configuration. So, yes, sans super raid in the main bay, you should be able to setup RAID for the two bays.

Not sure... and not sure you'd want to. Super RAID is just too sexy. I'd sooner swap out my ODD for a 3rd HDD option before letting go of Super RAID.

Thanks.. I was just curious as I already have an ADATA S510 120GB SSD... and it seems like it would be a cheaper option to just buy a 2nd one and raid them (240gb for an extra 120 bucks) than buy 2 mSSD drives (2X 128GB costs around $300).

I am finding that 120GB of SSD storage is just not cutting it. (Windows install + BF3 + Diablo3 + Guild Wars 2 = very full SSD).

There are so many options it really is hard to decide which would be the preferred option. I could always just keep super raid, replace 500gb with my AData S510, and move the 500gb to my optical drive...... decisions

Sorry if this has already been discussed previously (the search function doesn't work for me for some reason), how does the single-fan cooling system of the GT70/60 compare to dual-fan cooling systems of most other gaming laptops on the market?

The main reason some people don't buy 15 inch laptops is because of inevitable poor cooling of single-fan designs leading to bad temps and loud decibels. I'm wondering if the GT series suffer from these problems too?

Yeah I'm wondering that too. Notebookcheck reviews put the gt60 as around the same loudness as a Sager p150em, but it doesn't mention the temperatures. Anybody have some Prime95+Furmark temps?

Yes, I've experienced RAID-0 failure, on NAS.
What can I say... sh*t happens anyway, doesn't matter is it laptop or server.
Imagine 4TB broken array, more than 10 days to recover pieces of information
(manually!), and I hope that at least 10% of info was saved.

    But I like RAID-0, anyway!
    Just don't forget to backup.
And be prepared to buy a spare drive if one fails.

If you are really worried about drive failure and data loss due to the rigours of air travel, you do have the option with these laptops of running RAID1 instead of RAID0.

Hey, sorry I have abandoned this forum after my purchase but I've had quite a few games that I was never able to play. Well I just wanted to report my problems with the laptop and see if I'm just extremely unlucky.

    MSI GT70 0NC-012US #1:
    Purchased April 30
Approximately 6 days after purchase I encountered a blue line going down the screen. I contacted customer support and was told to return it to the store. Not a big deal as I didn't have much in it, figured it was just bad luck.

    Today June 11, 2012
This is the 2nd GT70 012US and I was playing a match of League of Legends, noticed to be dropping frames to 15 quite frequently. I figured whatever not a big deal, about 20 minutes after the last frame drop while in game I suddenly got a black screen which lasted about 4 - 5 seconds, the laptop then made a strange noise, then immediately changed to BSOD. I have not contacted customer support as of right now, this is the first time this has happened and I see if it happens again and how to reproduce it if possible before contacting customer support.

Oh wow, great, I have purchased my GT60 from GenTech to find out that it can't perform Burn Recovery when I first opened it.

Brought to my local MSI service centre, they said it will take them more than a week to rectify the problem. Tsk...

In addition, one of the LCD corner is loosely fitted and the service centre said the warranty doesn't have cosmetic coverage. Hi-5 to GenTech...what a great service provided.

Did you contact Gentech and ask for assistance before making this post?

Was it shipped to you from Gentech or directly from MSI?

If you didn't have any customizations done to the notebook that required Gentech to work on it then it could have been sent to you directly from MSI.

From what I have seen, Gentech stands behind their products and will do what they can to help the situation. They have a presence on this forum, and am sure that if the item is as you describe, they can work with you.

Please give the vendor the benefit of working with you to rectify the situation before passing judgement.

Hello again folks! Would any of you prefer super raid+HDD setup or SSD+HDD setup for a newbie to using SSDs? I've never used an SSD in my life and wanted to ask. Thanks a bunch for y'all's replies!

If you have BSOD errors, try running WhoCrashed WhoCrashed - CNET Download.com
It should give you a very comprehensive readout, so long as Windows was able to save the crash dump files.
Honestly, I think you have been extremely unlucky and we are very sorry to hear of the issues you are experiencing with your laptop.
Try finding out what caused the crash and post it here, the community can help you. :)

Give your reseller some benefit of the doubt here, they can assist you. Ken tends to look after a lot of people in these forums and I'm sure if you PM him or call Gentech can generally help.
As far as cosmetic coverage, any reseller won't cover that sort of thing unless you contacted them about it within a couple of hours of receiving the laptop, then some mediation between buyer and reseller must be done obviously to determine what happened. MSI might be able to handle it as well if you registered your laptop, it may be handled under the ADP warranty.

    Hey everyone,

I was a owner of the msi gt60!

I'm new to this forum but wanted to give thanks to all the members because it gave me the push i needed to purchase the MSI GT60 0NC-004US. Got it from Newegg.com - Computer Parts, Laptops, Electronics, HDTVs, Digital Cameras and More!. 12gb, gt670m, 2x500gb raid 0...yada yada you know the base model.

I received it two days ago but Rma'd it for a replacement today. It had three defects:
    1. Right speaker rattled - heard it from this forum or another that it could be a loose plate or something. I don't believe it was blown.
    2. Left vertical side of monitor had a pretty noticeable gap between the monitor and frame of the monitor. Could other owners press around the rim of the monitor(glossy area) to see if you have the same problem.)
    3. space bar problem was not really bad but only happened when pressed very softly. but i'm kinda, how do you say, anal.

Just wanted to let you know and if you got any feedback. Besides all that, it was a BEAST! Thats why i cant wait for the replacement! Pray for me it's legit this time.

oh one more thing. Does the gt60 have super raid capabaility? I know you guys talked about it but cant find it again.

oh actually last thing...when you set the keyboard to all white leds...does it have a little blueish tint and the keys next to the space bar have a little greenish tint? was it just me?

You sounds like I am not trying to help you but you never contact me with anything you just mentioned above.

the last email I got from you was on 05/29/2012 5:54AM PST complaining why your laptop not built and ship within half hour, I explained to you it can't be done in half hour because there are always orders ahead of you.

I looked at your order I see the only hardware we added is the free 4GB stick, we didn't touch your screen.

The GT60 does not use screws to secure the bezel, they use double-sided tape and clips inside the bezel, I've seen the bezel not fitted properly from the factory probably because it popped up during transport, your laptop was shipped to Singapore and now you are in UK so could be same thing happened, all you have to do is just try to push it down and it should just snap in.

If you need my help or if you have issues with service center in UK you can contact me by email always, I even helped some people on this forum who wasn't even my customers. :)

I have not contacted GenTech because they are not responsive and efficient. ( Neither will I spend another ~500USD to ship back and forth because I'm an international buyer.

There is a small customisation done, so it is shipped out from GenTech.

As I have a background as an electronic salesman, I just briefing look through the GT60 to find out that one of the LCD corner is loosely fit, sticker on palm rest is slightly worn off (7%) and the system folder was created on 20 May 2012, 2 days before my order. So I was wondering whether it is a refurbish set but I do not want to malign them so I just brought the labtop to the service centre.

The latest news from the engineer was that it maybe a mobo failure but will have to run several tests on it.

    ADP only covers in America.

Decided to start using the Steelseries headset I got free with mine while playing Max Payne 3 online and the 3.5m mic socket on the side doesn't seem to work. It recognises that it's been inserted but I can't use the mic at all and doesn't give me the option of changing the default mic.

(Sound works fine, just the mic socket and the headset works perfect on my old laptop and I even tried the headset I use on that one to no avail)

    Anyone else have this problem?
