I wanna say a mechanical noise. But I'm not sure. It didn't do it the next time I started my computer thankfully.

Could be your hard drive? I notice this from time to time, though its not usually at startup. Its called "hard drive parking". You can Google it and there is also an open source app which will prevent this. I believe its call hdd spin down or something like that?

Hey all, I just got my GT60 ONE yesterday and am quite happy with it. The laptop feels very nice solid overall, except for the plastic strip where the power button is, which has all of the touch sensitive buttons such as the turbo button and what not. I noticed it is quite flimsy when I push down on it, and also when it's under direct light I can easily see a lot of scratches, almost like someone took sandpaper to it. Has anyone else noticed this? And if you haven't could you check see if yours is like that or not? It doesn't seem to fit in with the rest of the laptop considering how sturdy and nice everything else is. It's not a huge deal or anything, just being a bit picky since it was quite expensive.

I've never owned a SSD, but do plan on upgrading my GT60 with one in the future. From what I've read, SSDs don't tend to give any warning signs before they fail, they usually die unexpectedly. Besides the speed increase you can also expect a more silent PC and potentially longer battery life. Again, I'm not talking from personal experience, just what I've read.

Have you removed the very light plastic that covers the panel?

I did push down on the left hand side of it and it did sink into place a little bit, still feels kinda flimsy though.

Well I removed the large piece that covered the speakers from side to side. Looking at closely I think I do see a layer of plastic over the panels, are you supposed to take that off? I tried picking at it just now a little bit and it seems like it's stuck there pretty good.

I have 2 SSD drives in my GT60 in RAID 0 setup and it runs like rocket really fast the only sad part is that 1 can run Sata 3 and the other 1 is Sata 2.

Why that is i dont know so that they can improve to put 2 Sata 3 slots for the rest it's much faster then a normal HDD.

Hey guys, not sure if this was posted earlier, but given the GT is a gaming laptop it may affect some users with this bug.
If you get a problem with logging into games for windows games (my issue was 'authentication failed' with the forced logon to Batman AC - error appearing despite having the right password) the issue lies with the Killer network driver program - QUALCOMM/Killer Network Manager - Connection / Networking - Forum - Connection / Networking - Xbox.com Forums - Xbox.com
Reading around there is that linked fix (untested), the new Beta driver published on the MSI site is supposed to fix it, or for me it was just an uninstall as I never use wired connection. After the uninstall all works great! Now back to gaming ;-)

The touch panel should be very shiny or glossy, if it is not you still have a plastics cover that needs to be peeled off.

Frankly, I cannot remember for sure if there is a heavy then a fine plastic cover. It sucks getting older.

I just peeled it off. It was a very thin plastic cover that was stuck on pretty good. When I was pulling it off on the left hand side it actually pulled the panel up from the laptop D: Luckily I could push it back into place and all the buttons still work.

Hey guys, my friend is an owner of a brand new MSI GT60 with a 3720qm processor, 16gb of ram, 256gb ssd, and 680m. I am not new to the gaming laptop world so when I come here asking you guys for help, I made sure to check all the usual causes of the problem I am about to state.

So far we have just been doing borderlands 2, and the game has these sudden fps drops, they seem completely random. I mean serious fps drop down to the 20's. A 680m shouldn't have issues with this game as I am sure many of you know. Temps during gaming seem totally fine, barley breaking the 70c barrier and clocks seem to be holding steady so no throttling as far as I can tell. (FYI no overclock has been done these are the stock clocks that come with the laptop). Drivers have been updated to the latest nvidia official drivers. So any idea what this could be?

Hey Guys, I noticed something today (maybe I missed it, not sure), but on my GT60, it can be sitting at idle (screen saver going),
and everyone in awhile, I will hear a scratching like sound. It doesn't last more then a second. The sound is pretty quite. Almost sounds like something touching the cooling fan????

Has anyone else hear this, and is there anyway to get rid of it?

    Thnx

You are correct. The qualcomm manager application that is installed with the driver will impare windows live logins. I'm not exactly sure if a fix, or hack, has resolved this issue. However, you can successfully extract just the driver required for the LAN adapter, and still have full functionality. The application will not be installed, hpwever, but who really uses that anyway?

Normally, you can extract a .exe file by using a utility such as 7zip. That works great in most cases and allow you to just point to a driver file. But with the killer .exe driver update, 7zip will not read the archive.

Note: You will need 7zip to perform this successfully; or another utility that can extract .msi archives.

So, basically all you have to do is start the installer. Either killer big foot 32 or 64. When it is ready and has you at the "click next" screen, simply go to your local temp directory and find the "Bigfoot networks killer network manager" .msi file. Right click on this, and extract it with 7zip. The actual .inf driver file will be inside. Now you can simply go to device manager and point to that file. Driver installed, and no application required!!

Note: My laptop is a gt60, and has the e2200 Bigfoot adapter. So my driver file was called "e22w8x64.inf". This was for windows 8 x64 bit. The windows 7 driver is the same, but "w7".

You need the s-bar application running properly in order for most of those buttons to work. And the keyboard lighting is controlled solely by msi klm manager. You can disable the back light in that utility.

Yeah im the one with the mechanical noise during start up occasionally. I'm not sure. I emailed MSI and they want me to send it in. Does anyone have any idea how long this will take? I'm at school in Iowa and kind of need it lol. Also if its just the HDD can't I just send that in and they send me a new one? So I can keep my laptop.

So a quick question. I recently bought the gt 60 with the single 750 gb hard drive and after installing all his games and his video software I created a backup on the hard drive that took nearly 60gb of space. Yes it's a large backup file I know and I have not given it too him yet for his birthday.

Now my question is I want to install a ssd for the speed increase but my computer expertise are low on the scale so in child terms lol how would I go about doing this.

Since I created the backup file on the hard disk already would I just be able to put that on thee ssd and set the ssd as the main and then then 750 as the slave.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot friends

I guess I should say he will be starting visual design and editing classes. So would a start up ssd make his times faster on the computer Like for example editing videos and adding new videos into applications like adobe premier I just hear a lot about how they are quite a bit faster but don't actually know much about it. Thanks a lot

Hello and welcome to the forums. A ssd will increase the speed of anything loaded onto it. If you install windows ( which you would have to do, you can just copy over the backup. You'll need to do a full install) it will cut down the boot up time by at least half.

It will also load applications faster. Excel, word, adobe etc. you won't get any better gpu or CPU performance out of a ssd though. If you play games for example, your frames per second wont increase. Your load times will decrease though.

A ssd is a wise choice.

I guess it depends on how serious you feel the issue is. I would try and listen more carefully and try to nail down where exactly the sound is coming from, maybe even use a stethoscope. If its just the optical drive I wouldnt worry that much. You do have some time on your warranty if you have registered it with them.

If mine wakes from sleep I hear a noise from the optical drive but thats the only noise I get which isnt a problem.

If its something else, its probably worth sending it in, just for the peace of mind

Yeah I might just wait until I have the time to send it in. I might get an SSD just in case my normal one crashes or something. Any recommendations? Also my windows won't back up my system anymore. It says there is no space for even one backup... I deleted the old ones. They r over 100 gbs... I partitioned the HDD from 250/500 to 100/650 though. Is that why?

so thanks for answering my recent question so quickly guys . there is however one more with the hard drive. so like i said right now i have only the one 750gb hard drive installed. and i would like to instal the 256gb ssd as the main hard drive and the 750gb as the second one. now i just created a backup on the 750 gb hard drive which is 23gb and aslo created a system image that is a little over 220 gb yes i know that is alot already however i can create a new one without all the pictures if that helps.

now what would be the best way to install this new hard drive. i was thinking how can i create this hard drive as my main ? like i said i already have the system image created so shouldnt i just be able to put that into the new hard drive and then pull both out and insert the ssd as the main.any help would be nice as im not a computer guy more of a construction man , thanks guys. im very new to allof this and im in asia right now .

I suppose you could try ghosting from your hdd to your new ssd, but general consensus is that it is best to start from scratch and reinstall windows fresh on your new SSD.

Although with either of these options, just copying your image from hdd to ssd will not work.

If you want to try ghosting, this link might help. I found it doing a quick search. I don't know if it will work or not.

That's what I would do, especially after I listened to mine again this morning. I do get a little "read" out of the optical drive when it starts up and thats nothing to worry about.

I got the Samsung 830 256gb SSD and love it but I don't actually know anything about them and this is the first I've had. On my GT70 it had to be installed in the bay not occupied by current HD (upper left bay with the laptop turned over and the keyboard towards you) in order to get sata III speeds. I had it in the other bay but would only get sata II speeds until I switched it.

Not sure about your backup issue but your reasoning is sound...probably if you redo your set-up for the new partitions it will work. You might wanna consider an outboard drive for backups tho....if the main drive fails, all partitions will be toast and having a backup on that other partition wont be much use.

Once you get a SSD drive as your main, you can use the internal HDD for backups just fine.

Guys, looks like MSI might be doing a GT60 with a "GTX 675MX" GPU.

Discuss. Even better, someone drag Ken into this thread so we can try to grill him.

Hey guys... do anyone know how to customize the S-bar???... i don't know how to add programs to it... it's useless with nothing more than the default programs in it..

    I don't think there is any difference in the S-bar of the GT60 and GT70 but just in case i own a GT70 0N-219 with Intel i7 3610QM, GTX675M 4GB, 16GBRAM, 1.5TB Raid0 HDs

Hey I'm thinking about getting a SSD for the GT70-0NC. Do I need anything in particular? Like a transfer cord to plug it in? Or do I literally just buy the drive? Anyone have any recommendations that are relatively cheap>125$? Also around 100 gbs and higher?

Hey can anyone tell me which HDD bay is for sata III? I have the 0NC with the 750 HDD. Would I have to switch them?

Also does anyone have problems with Google Chrome force closing? I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Also it won't let me update to the newest version

It gets installed in the empty drive bay not already occupied by the 750 in order to get sata III speeds.

No problems for me with Chrome.

Best of luck...you'll love the new drive speeds. I didnt do mine myself as I read a few posts about problems imaging drives etc., so I had it done at my local computer shop. From what I gather its best to do a fresh install of win7 but thats not what I did.

Are you 100% sure? On my GT60 0NE I tried the empty drive slot first (was at the front of the unit) and then tried the one previously occupied by the 750GB HD and the second one benchmarked much faster than the first one, so the back slot is the SATA3 one, not the front slot. Unless some units come with the 750GB drive in the front slot??

** It was a real pain to figure this out, as I found conflicting info all over the place, only one picture and it only said GEN2 and GEN3 which is not real definitive. Plus HWINFO and other programs can only tell you that the controller on the drive is SATA3 able, NOT if it is actually running in SATA3 mode. A benchmark seemed to be the only way to really tell. In my case it was very obvious difference in numbers, with the exact same drive swapped in both locations.

I am not sure what you term the "back slot". On my GT70 when I turn the laptop over with the front towards me, the drive bay to the right of the battery has the original 750gb HDD installed. The bay above the battery pack and to the rear of the laptop is the empty slot.
I suppose its possible that the GT60 and GT70 have different layout, it sounds like your HDD was installed in a different bay than my GT70s was, but I do know in my case the empty, rear bay was for Sata III.

It sounds very similar layout, yes the one above the battery I was calling the "back" slot. And also yes my 750GB drive was in the one above the battery, not the one near the very front of laptop. Maybe they just setup the GT60 & GT70 differently with respect to primary drive locations, since it's completely configurable. Either way, it sound like we agree that the SATA3 locations on both laptops is the one above the battery, not the one to the right of the battery :)

Yes we do agree! :) I checked with Intel RST and I also used the Samsung SSD Magician benchmarks to test it in both locations as well and got double the speed when it's in the correct bay.

Yes you do, a 2nd one did not come with mine. You can buy one from rjtech but its kinda expensive. I just used a piece of rubber eraser to hold it in place - an idea I got further back in the thread.

I have a GT70 with 750GB 7200RPM, is it possible to get the SuperRAID module or an alternative similar component so I can run a mSATA RAID config?
I've been looking all over the web and maybe someone here already found something?
I also send an email to MSI if they can get me the SuperRAID module, but no response yet.

I did find an eBay auction that sells something similar, but I'm worried about the fact its a SATA2 adapter, will it make a big performance difference running dual mSATA SSD's using SATA2 instead of SATA3?

    Thanks in advance

EDIT: What I'd really like to know is whether it's beneficial to get the SATA2 dual mSATA SSD raid config or would it be more beneficial to get only one SATA3 SSD. Because I'm quite certain I won't be able to find the SuperRAID module.

With the barebones unit, they only provide 1 bracket and a rubber wedge for the other hdd
