    1. Several people have reported that downgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 7 on MSI GT laptops causes BSODs. MSI refused to help claiming they don't support downgrading. It's unclear whether these same people tried to flash the BIOS with the Windows 7 version instead of the Windows 8 which will definitely cause a BSOD.

    2. I don't have SSDs in mine, but I do use RAID-0. Doing a clean install of Windows 8 didn't require extra drivers, but the current models use a different RAID controller than mine. YMMV.

Thanks for your tips! so the mSATA interface a mSATA-3 which benefits the 6Gb speed at all? (so far I know the mSATA port in Clevo rig are mSATA-2 which 3Gb only....)

Do you know how these people perform the Windows downgrade? They do it themself (DIY) or directly choose Windows7 while they config their laptop in website (done by computer builder)? What I suppose get a hazzle-free rig from computer builder, this makes me worry if BSOD come out while the windows downgrade was perform by a professional builder.... I'm living out of US, it will be really trouble if any repair shipping works take place.....

Where can I buy the adapter? I would like to use two mSATA SSD cards in RAID 0. I have the GT60, I assume it is the same adapter. I would like to buy one to upgrade my laptop.

When I received my GT70 it had two desktop.ini files containing .ShellClassInfo & LocalizedFileNames.
I put in a new SSD, installed Windows 7 and they have reappeared on the desktop?

I'm new to 7 having migrated from XP.

How do I go about hiding those files?

I don't recall anything such as that in XP.

    Thanks

Owned this laptop for a couple of months and it is amazing for the money I put into it ($900 barebones, $175 for an i7-3610, $180 for a 250GB Samsung SSD, $90 for 16GB DDR3), I think. Runs everything I throw at it rather well at high quality graphical settings (so far, AC3, AC:R, Crysis 2, BF3, Prototype 2) and is plenty fast, so that makes me happy.

Some questions, if anyone can answer them:

    - I'm noticing that on a reboot, the laptop likes to have everything disabled, as in the webcam, the wireless, NumLock, etc. Why is this? Is this the laptop or an issue with Windows 7 x64? I've never had this happen with my Asus G50VT-X5, so I didn't know if this was because SBar was doing it or what. Spent an hour trying to figure out why my webcam wasn't working until I realized I could hit Fn+F6... it's a good thing that there's a WiFi indicator or else I'd be doing the same thing with that, too. I know a possible solution is to install the Intel software to turn on the wireless on startup, but I don't want to have to resort to install all sorts of bloatware to turn everything on like this.

    - First time with an SSD, but I'm noticing that sometimes things just hang. I don't know if it is the SSD or the CPU or if it's Windows 7 doing it, but I'll be playing Assassin's Creed: Revelations and on a loading screen or when the game has to load something (like right after finishing a mission), the game would freeze for at least 10 seconds, then resume normally. I really don't know how to check what's causing this, to be honest, whether it be the Event Viewer or some other log. I know it's a vague question, but if someone can throw out some pointers (especially possible SSD issues, since this is the first time I've ever owned one), that would be awesome.

    - I have the model with the blue backlit keyboard. Where can I download a Keyboard Lighting Manager to see if I can change the colors on this thing? Or is it physically just a blue LED? Any physical hacks to change the LEDs? Or would I have to order another keyboard?

    - I'm noticing that with some USB devices, some of the USB ports work flawlessly and sometimes a port will only detect a device, but I won't be able to use it. I've only noticed this with a CAC card reader (since I'm in the military): it works in every USB port except for the middle USB 3.0 port on the left side of the laptop. Any possible reason why this might happen?

    - What is the model equivalent for the MS-16F332 (my exact model number), more commonly the MS-16F3? Is it the GT60 0NC? 0NE?

Click Organize > file and folder options and click Vew tab and check Hide Protected Operating System Files (recommended):

    hide-protective-files1.JPG

    hide-protective-files2.JPG

Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8 all has this options, it's just the way to navigate are different.

Does MSI GT70 share the same graphic card module with Clevo/Sager or they have different pin/interface each other? and how about the heatsink?

Look forward to see if it is easy enough for upgrade the display module in short future...

MSI and Sager uses standard MXM video card however, the heatsink layout are not the same so you will need to mod the heatsink.

Anyone got a line on a rollerbag laptop carrier that will carry my GT70? I have a great Targus bag, but the GT70 is just too big for it. I'm looking for one that carries the laptop vertically, so it will less unwieldy if I take the laptop on a plane. Looking in the $75-150 range.

Honestly I prefer pulling the laptop around with a roller bag while the laptop and accessories being much more huge and heavy these day, but I worry about that suspension and vibration from the roller will damage or lose the contact of the components inside laptop as well.... anyone here a roller bag expert can share some experience?

Anyway I'm interested in kind of roller bag as well, let see anyone can give a suggestion :)

Graphics drivers are best obtained from their manufacturer, so nvidia.com in your case.

Thanks, I will do that. Let me ask you guys smth else if you use GT70 for gaming (duh).

    - Go back to Win 7 x64 or go on with Win 8 x64?

    - In case of Win 8: I want to completely wipe out all partitions, factory settings and crap that it may come with:

-> create a Windows 8 Setup DVD to boot from it, run Setup, delete all partitions from the SSD and HDD, create them as I like: SSD will be drive C for Windows, Drive D for the MAIN Game that will load the graphics, HDD drives for the rest..

Okay, I probably have some recovery partition - do I need it for creating my DVD win8 setup to boot from, or do I need to get another ISO of the same windows 8 version? The problem is the key is probably in the hardware, I am not sure if it will be recognized or how I will get it, or if it will be required if I ran Windows 8 installation from a separate burned ISO files. So how do I proceed there?

ExcaliberPC, ebay (new unused laptop), online cause I am not on the NA continent and they ship internationally. I have yet to test how it runs SC2 and if there are any problems with the laptop, so far just deciding to go Win 7 or Win 8. I think Im gonna try Win 8 but I will probably look for ISO image of the same version.

Does anybody know.. again which edition of Windows 8 the MSI GT70 laptops come with?

Also where can I get some ISO of the same windows, will it recognize my OEM key that is integrated in BIOS, since there is no sticker... I am doing a clean installation, wiping all partitions and all.

I am reading some ridiculous price figures for this laptop.

    I just built a barebones 16F3 (unbranded GT60) for less than $1300 with an Intel 3610M, 16GB RAM, a 250GB Samsung SSD, and a 1TB secondary HD.

Finding out this laptop is actually darn light... without the battery. :p

@EMTR: Torrent for an ISO on Pirate Bay and use a legit key from an older laptop or something. (Hey, you still own that copy of Windows, so it's all good.) Or use Windows Loader or RemoveWAT if you don't care about legitamacy.

Hating this keyboard... still getting used to it after a few months. Chiclets suck when you're jumping from a traditional layout.

yes you can ask your reseller however, there are so many different heatsinks for new models and they all the look the same but the layout for VRAM and ICs are different. so even they look exactly the same but doesn't mean it work properly.

Yes it's just as good percentage wise as the 680M, so it closes to the gap to a stock clocked 680M. What sort of temps are you seeing in a game like crysis 3 at that HG2012?

Crysis 3 max temps are about 71C with the fans turned up using the gt70s fan boost feature. I'm going to try for 1100 on the core later today

I bought a GT60 with the GTX 675m from Amazon and while I love it to death I can not for the life of me get used to the size/weight.. almost 2 months old now so 18 months of warranty left. Even bought a spare power supply for it. If anyone wants a good deal on a ever so slightly used GT60 lmk... plenty of selling references available.

Can you answer smth that MSI support failed to answer (again!). Why do you do this overclocking, is it needed? I have GT70 0ND also with 675MX, they never answered me why on Windows 8 it displays 1600MB max video memory when it should show 4000MB? Should overclocking be done for e.g Starcraft II?

    Dear All,

This is my first time posting on this forum and I am very glad it exists. :) I do apologize if this is not the proper thread to post my question but here it goes. I received my GT70- 0ND yesterday and it came with Win8 x64t pre-installed. I added a 2nd hard drive (SSD) and made a clean install of Win7 x64. Everything has gone well with the important drivers (i.e. GPU, etc) but I this THX EQ utility is not really installing and also the webcam doesn't work. I installed skype just a while ago and it says that it cannot find any webcam installed in the system. The MSI website - as far as the webcam is concerned - says "This device uses the native driver bundled in operating system." Any idea of where to get a "default" Win7 x64 for the webcam. I'm googling it, but haven't found anything in particular for the time being.

By the way I mainly bought the laptop as I am in photo/video editing (Photoshop CS5 - Sony Vegas Pro 11/12)...still haven't installed all related software, but in case I have anything worth sharing I will definitely will.

    Looking forward to a solution.

    Thanks.

EDIT: Just fixed it. I couldn't believe that it was that easy. Just went to the S-Bar Utility and selected the Webcam icon and voila! Ah, sometimes expecting that something will be more difficult it makes you not see the easier solutions which are usually just before our eyes. May we all enjoy our MSIs... :)

^ My HDD has some ID or smth like W383459P4 - it says the capacity so that's how I know this is my HDD cause it's the larger one, the SSD I have says ADATA which I see 128 GB, so I know this is my SSD. During Win8 installation you see e.g 700GB unallocated memory and 128GB unallocated - now you know which memory is from which disk, When you create a partition/drive format it, make your SSD be for Windows and most stuff you use, then make the HDD drives. Do keep the order of system partitions that are auto created, once you have these, there is no reason to not see your HDD

HD4000? You mean the processor? My concern is, I have GeForce 675MX 4GB, when I do games like SC2, is it using the 4GB and not say only 1660MB graphics right? I think this video card is dedicated one and I am not sure how this shared vs dedicated goes here. I want to know if I am using the 4GB...

And another question for owners of any GT70, is there a list of all the drivers that I need and those that are only optional, is there any specific order I should install? I know about video, chipset being main graphics but what about some others - what is obligatory to have and what is optional from drivers and the utilities? I will use LED keyboard, the orange icon for sound (is it Realtek HD soun),

I am not sure if I need Bigfoot Killer lan application, Overclock mngr (I may not do such thing nay time soon), which of the drivers listed are needed and which are optional, the same for utilities, if anyone knows, cause I don't wanna install things I do not need, let me know pls.

Yes, programs are only shown the HD4000 so that there are no compatibility issues so it can make things like detecting the memory allowance a bit off, but the integrated card only needs enough memory to show the final image and the dedicated has the full access to its 4GB (even though that 1.7GB would actually be enough for it anyway).

^ It's not enough to be enough, for 4GB and 675MX that is like 680M, should be running SC2 at Ultra/Extreme settings, not just run it?

Let's emphasize on this one: the CPU's integrated GPU is the one like integrated video card (crappy one) called HD 4000? Is this why in all places for Specifications I see 1664 total Memory? This should not be so, shouldn't I be seeing my 4GB Geforce? DO I need this driver installed at all if I will use the Geforce one? How do I make it use my Nvidia 4GB 675MX memory? I know I am doing clean install but I remember seeing the 1664MB memory even with the factory settings which supposedly had the nvidia driver installed. So how to proceed? It's like I am not with 4GB right now? I gotta change something or only install nvidia drivers?

Have you installed both IGP driver and nvidia driver?
If yes, then there's no problem.

Switching between GPU done automatically depends on workload, if you want specific program run on specific GPU, you can change it in nvidia control panel.

Doesn't matter which GPU is used to process the image, the final result is handled by IGP and then render it to the display.
Thats why you only see 1664 total memory because the program think its all done by IGP, but its not.

You can see which GPU are being used by checking led on your power button (nvidia orange, intel white).

Try using the 4GB of memory in a propper game, your card will be choking anyway :p 2GB would be plenty for the reasonable life of the card really, but it wont hurt.

Your graphics card will use its memory as it needs, the integrated is simply used as a frame buffer to store the rendered frame to be displayed which is at MOST 10MB per frame if it did it uncompressed which means you use about 30MB, add in a bit for passing over the data required for rendering and it's not much.

Think of it as homework your IGP is cheating at, your IGP goes and collects the assignment hands it off to the much more clever dedicated GPU which does the assignment, the IGP then takes it and hands it in as its own work.

No, that should be on your touchbar at the top.

So long as it supports cuda the 675M will run it and likely faster than the kepler chips.

Hi guys, my MSI GT60 has started to turn off when the battery reaches 30% or somewhere around there. It just dies just like if you were to turn the laptop off by pressing the power button.
Has anyone else with MSI experienced something like this and/or what can be the problem?

Kepler chips were focused on gaming so only the titan chip has a high number of high precision units required for many CUDA tasks.

As Meaker mentioned, Fermi GPUs were produced for exceptional GPGPU performance in mind, and thus not only were fermi gpus very good at gaming, but also at CUDA operation, floating point calculations and general purpose tasks. With Kepler, Nvidia decided to dump the general purpose out and improve the gaming part. Doing this, they reduced power, and dramatically improve gaming performance. Only with Titan did they allow again more floating point performance, but it still hardly shines compared to Fermi.
