You mean the cable from the brick to the tip that plugs into the machine? Was there any obvious physical damage to the cable? I would report that the fact the cable set alight and the brick did not cut out to your reseller and MSI.

Exactly! The cable has obvious damage leading to the Delta brick. The bottom of the cable has a hole with burnt wires. 13981213698_b81b963e53_b.jpg
I didn't even turn on the laptop! It just arced with a wisp of smoke followed by a flame. I have already informed my contact at MSi about it and PM'd Derek@XoticPC.

After reading your post I checked out the Cooler Master U2 and U3. I think I'm going to buy the U3 for my GT60 Dominator 3K-475 that I ordered from you guys at GenTech PC. I like the moveable fan idea, and we sell it at Micro Center where I work. Thanks for the tip!

To be honest the MSI does not struggle with drawing air in and the lack of direct airflow to the fan makes the difference even smaller, you get all the benefit from simply propping up the back.

I posted previously on the GT 60 owners forum about my maybe faulty power brick and now that I finally own a power meter - what exactly should I be reading from it? Just normal readings or do I have to put the system under stress?

It's pretty hard to monitor a brick's behaviour and guess by looking at the wall, the easiest is to always compare to a second brick.

I posted this in the "Official GT60 Dominator 3K-475 Owners Lounge" thread, but figured I'd get more responses if I posted it here as well:
So I ordered my GT60 with just the128GB mSATA SSD that comes withough upgrading, figuring that I could add SSDs in the future when I have a little more money. It has two open mSATA slots for adding up to two more mSATA SSDs. This raises many questions. Are all the big name mSATA SSDs out there, Samsung Evo, Crucial M500, Intel, Plextor, ADATA about the same or do they differ greatly in performance and reliability? Does it matter what the brand and type of SSD that is already in the machine, when adding other mSATA SSDs, or do they all work together fine? And if I plan to change out the 2.5' HDD drive for a 2.5' SSD down the road, does that matter concening my more immediate plans to add to the mSATA SSDs? I have more questions, but figured that this would be a good start.

    Hi

I have an MSI GT70 0ND-219US that has some funky problems with it. I bought it off ebay a few months back knowing that it didn't power on. I replaced the AC adapter as the one that it shipped with didn't output any power but this did not fix the issue so I took a look at the motherboard and found that a small chip near the power jack had been fried. I now have a new motherboard in the laptop that allows me to power it up BUT with a few problems. I'm hoping that there's a simple solution to get it all working.

    Problems are:

    • Nothing shows on the screen, even if I try an external monitor. The external monitor doesn't even react when I power on the laptop.
    • The keyboard does not light up
    • The button to turn the track pad on/off is always on and cannot be turned off.
    • The function keys at the top are acting strange, I press one but it changes another. For example, I press what looks like a screen and it makes the fan speed up.

The motherboards are almost identical. They are both MS-17621 but the old one is version 1.0 and the new one is version 2.1. Do I need to somehow change the BIOS? But how can I do this without a display?

    Any help or advice please?!

I am leaning toward the Samsung 840 Evo mSATA SSDs. The 500gb ones are only $290 each at Micro Center. I figure I could get one now, another one in a couple of months. and eventually replace the 128gb mSATA that comes with the machine.

Sounds like the brick blew and caused a cascade failure throughout the machine, any or all of the rest of the machine could be fried.

BLOATWARE ... does anyone know a quick way to get rid of them all? Got this sweet GT70 2OL for my 3D animation work, but it hurts me to see all this software pre-installed I don't know what they're for. For example, not sure the NVIDIA geforce experience app helps me as I have a Quadro GPU instead.

I'm not well versed in computers, so apologies for my ignorance, and thanks in advanced!

Should I be concerned if when I run Speccy, it says the memory on my GTX 880 is 4095 MB? Isn't it suppose to be 8192 MB? It is on the GT60 3k-475.

Hello, I just got my 2pc with the 870m yesterday and played arma 2 and dayz so far. Heat is not bad at all. I do not have the exact temp it was at but the top left of laptop is the only area that gets hot. Plus the boosted fan works like a charm at cooling it off.

Not at all. My first startup (after initial setup) was less than ten seconds. Days and arma ran smooth. Battery isn't that bad (can modify settings for when its on battery and when its plugged in). Screen looks amazing and the build of laptop feels and looks great. The only thing that didn't work was the G button on the bar with the power button.

Hey guys. Just ordered up a gt70 2pc-1467us looking forward to seeing what it cando! I previously had a mildly built alienware 18 with dual 780s but had a couple issues within the first week so I sent it back. I decided to give msi a try since I don't need a full on massive desktop replacement as I plan to built an actual desktop monster once I purchase a house. Hopefully this thing does the trick!

It's funny how much machines like the 18 change your perception of size, the gt70 is considered a large machine but the 18 makes it look portable.

I recieved my gt70 yesterday and I am quite happy with it. Not sure if something is wrong with my trackpad or not but when I use it sometime the menu screen randomly appears and it's pretty annoying. When I plug my mouse in it does not do this and it auto disables my trackpad. Is this normal? Not a big deal just curious because my alienware that I had didnt do this

I have a question. I own a GT70 0NE with a 3610QM, GTX 680m, 2x64GB SSD RAID, and a 750gb 7.2kRPM HDD (the 2013 model). I've repasted my GPU and CPU with Coolaboratory Liquid Ultra which dropped my temps a lot. However, I would still like extra cooling, so I've looked at the new thermal bridge heatsinks used on the GPU in the new laptop and noticed it simply just mounts on top of the same old CPU heatsink using the two screws on the side of the CPU heatsink mount. Does this mean that if I buy a new GPU heatsink that it will be compatible with my older laptop? Or is there a height difference on the CPU heatsink or anything that should make it incompatible? Any help or thoughts are appreciated.

It's the same, be aware it mostly impacts idle temperatures, you will want to repad to 0.5mm pads to improve the cooling during load.

I've heard that using simple thermal paste, specifically a thicker kind such as MX4, works much better than the default pads. What's your opinion on that? Will a .5mm pad work best?

Hey Guys & Girls! I recently bought a GT60 last week and it's awesome! However I tried skyping with it and also tried using steam chat with it and the other person could not hear me. Also when I use skype test call it doesn't pick up my voice.

I've tried googling the problem however it brings up alot of old posts and outdated issues... So I don't know if its a hardware problem or software. I also tried a pair of skull candy headphones plugged into the headphone socket, the (headphones have a built in mic) however this didn't work either. (Worked on my old laptop)

I'm not really a computer expert so I ended up here! :)

    I'm running windows 8.

    Thanks James.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah the mic is enabled and I was messing around last night trying out the sound recording, and if I shout I can hear myself like an echo on the playback..

Maybe I'll just buy an external mic...

Anyone got a spare 670m from a swap laying around? Mine's shot and I really don't have the money ebay is asking for ones, so I'll probably buy it if the price is right.

Try lurking for quadro 4000m its the same chip and pcb like 570m/670m just underclocked. But little bit of msi afterburner will fix those clocks for you.xmine went from 475 to 620 just by moving one slider, no qdded voltage, max temp difference was around 2c.

So, it'll fit the heatsink for the 670m and work fine without needing a bios flash?

Hey guys, I just bought a MSI GT Series GT70 DominatorPro-890. I had Asus G750 JavaScript and then JZ model before this, but bad thermal throttling led me to msi.

So, is the the forum for this notebook? The asus had an actual asus forum, for specific laptops, in which you could make threads and ask questions and all that. But is this the forum for the msi, or is there another website for that?

Also, my asus came with backtracker, which put windows and recovery all onto a usb for me, in which I could do fresh installs of windows with all drivers onto any harddrive in my laptop through the usb. Does the msi have a program like this?

Also, I've seen a few posts on here about downloading a fan control software thing, is that something that should be done?

I'm new to msi, old to laptops and pc's. I knew my asus like back of hand, and built several gaming and workstation pc's in the last year so I am fully knowledgable on both components and processes.

I'm going to be using this laptop for some gaming, but maily sony vegas 12, cyberlink powerdirector 12, maya, solidworks, autocad, and adobe cs suite.

Are there any first things to be done when getting my laptop? Other than the normal clean up bloatware type stuff?

I plan to change out hhd for 2x 1tb Samsung evo ssd's, and add in my 4x 8gb ddr3l 1866 ram. I have those from previous asus. Should I also change out the wireless card? Does it have miracast/widi?

    Anything to help out please.

You can ask anything in this thread, or you can make a new thread about your issues,
MSI uses BurnRecovery to create recovery media, but it also has a built-in F3 hotkey to activate recovery during boot time.
The fan control software is requested by some users to help to reduce noise when the system under little to moderate loading.
Driver updates may help with performance and compatibility with new game titles out there.
You can change anything in the system without voiding your warranty if they are handled properly. There's no need to replace the wifi card unless you need WiDi because killer doesn't offer it.

Greet's I've been messing around around with my GT70 2OC and have broke and fixed alot of hardware and software on it, but recently I came across a problem i cant seem to solve myself. My subwoofer is not working, Im pretty sure it stoped working after I did a EC update to1763ems1 ver5.13, and a me fw update to 9.0.31.1487. Currently, I do have audio, just no sub. I think one of the two renamed a port for subs atapi internal connector. Anyways I've searched everywhere for the old fw's and cant find em. So, putting out a request

Anyone have the EC Firmware 1763ems1 Ver5.06 and ME FW Version 9.0.1.1333

May as well add this too, I'm going to attempt adding in a gtx 880m to replace my 770m and im wondering if the reference holes match up.

Make sure to have the latest Realtek audio driver installed, visit Realtek and click on HD Audio Codec driver and download it from there.
Once the driver is installed the subwoofer is activated automatically.

I've got a MSI GT70 laptop with 8GB ram (it only uses one slot), the RAM manufacture is A-Data, Am I able to install Kingston HyperX (2*8GB) on my laptop? will it cause problem, because they are from two different manufacture only will they work together? and the form factor is SO-DIMM, right?

    Thanks a lot.

DDR3L 1600MHz 1.35V CL11, if you attempt to use a better RAM with aggressive timing, then you need to replace this module.

Yup, most likely they will work if spec matches, except in rare cases they just don't due to different memory ICs disliking each other.

Hey guys, I just bought the MSI GT60 2PC Dominator and I seem to be having a problem. The fan seems to be emitting a low whistling sound which is really really annoying. I have contacted the MSI support (in France) but they seem to be taking ages to reply.

I was wondering if anyone else has been facing this problem. I looked up online and found this video of a person who has the exactly the same problem.

It is really a shame, I have had this laptop for a week and it already has this problem. It is a great laptop otherwise.

Open it up and reseat the fan and see how it goes, but if problem persists then best to send it in for service by calling them directly.

    Hello,

To be honest for now Im a slightly upgraded [ssd, ram and windows 8.1] gx70 3be owner [last 6 months] but the a10-5750m keeps on bottlenecking me in cad/solidworks and mostly in BF4 :) and since its processor slot is no longer supported/continued I have no way of reducing the bottleneck.

    To the point:
I have found a ms-1763 mobo [used in some GT70's] in an affordable price and also have a Intel Core i7-4700MQ that I could use for starters.
I assume that the rest of my gx70 equipment would be donated to this "project".
I'm on the stage of calculating if I should go with it this swap or sell the GX and buy a new GT but then again its not only about money, but also about satisfaction from doing something on my own this time.

    My main question:
Is it possible to plug my radeon 8970m into ms-1763 mobo and if it would recognize it and work properly with an intel processor?
Have any1 tried it before and with what results?

If so the whole rebuild would be highly profitable for me since I already have intel processor and the mobo to support it its like 700zl and I could still sell my a10 processor and gx mobo.
If the 8970 wont work on a GT70 mainboard then I will need to add lets say 2500zł for a new graphics card and still should be able to sell my 8970m.

So in the conclusion the upgrade wold cost me from 700zl to about 1700zł and I would have a pretty damn sweet machine on my hands.

On the other hand selling my gx70 would give me around 3500zł and a new gt70 starts at 5500-6000zł so the difference would be 2000-2500 zł and then I would still probably need a new ssd drive and an operating system.

What do you guys think about this swap and is it possible to run my 8970m with a GT70 ms-1763 mobo or is it a no-go for some reason.

Also I have just started going through this thread to find the info on my own, but I would be very happy if someone could respond besides that to confirm my findings.

Maybe on the GPU front since there is a 17 inch barebone with AMD GPU (m290x) shipping now but it is untested swapping cards around between the models.

Before it was a total no go just so you are aware of the background.

I just opened it and had a look. There is not much that I can do to the fan. I really do not want to start taking the fan apart.

The MSI support seems to be taking ages to reply. I have emailed them and they ended up opening a support ticket but with no reply to it so far in the last 4 days. I tried calling them today but no one seems to pick up their phone.

This fan noise is giving me a headache
