Im not sure but if you have 8gb than you can upgrade to 16gb for sure. 32 most probably but it depends on the motherboard/number of ram slots on it.
Just remember to buy ram of the same parameters that you already have because if you have 1600mhz than even if you will buy additional 8gb, 1866mhz it will be bottlenecked by the 1600.
So to conclude either open your laptop bottom cover and check what ram is inside [it may be 2x 4gb but most probably its 1x 8gb] , or check it with hwinfo.
Depending on your motherboard you will have 2 ram slots on the bottom of your laptop [up to 16gb], or two slots on the bottom and two under the keyboard[up to 32gb] - most probably your case.
Also in the second scenario the primary slots will be under the keyboard so maybe it will be easier to check with hwinfo, but on the other hand you will still need to open your laptop to install the memory so you can start opening it now and have some practice ;]
Download the dissasembly guide from msi forums and be super gentle because those plastic clips like to crack easily.

You can upgrade to 32GB total from 4 memory slots, but make sure you are getting DDR3L to upgrade with.

Thank you!

Yes two of the slots are under the main hatch, the other two are underneath the keyboard.

Does anyone know where is support page for MSI barebones with bioses and software updates, like for any retail laptop? -
Hello everyone, new here to the MSI family. I am coming from Alienware and was just wondering how user friendly are these laptops when it comes to upgrading the GPU? With my M18x I was able to jump from 580 to 680 with not much problem. Are there drastic measures that need to be taken to switch to a different gpu or is it as simple as swapping out the gpu inside assuming everything fits nicely.
-
In general, GPU upgrades are possible but the simplicity of said upgrades depends entirely of the model you are trying to upgrade. In general though, it has been a matter of popping the next GPU and use the correct heatsink (nvidia vs amd heatsinks) or simply mod your heatsink to fit your new GPU.
Support depends on the model, but there are many knowledgeable users on these forums that can help out with itIn general though, we have seen people go from 670m to 780m or things like that too. Older laptops with HD5870m have jumped even to 7970m/8970m etc.
Oh yeah, and a matter of vbios too. Flashing may be required. -
When buying the mobo I forgot about two small hdd adapters so now Im still waiting to get them [3weeks of agony omg!].
So in conclusion if you want to upgrade your gpu inside your product family [nvidia->newer nvidia, amd->newer amd] it will most probably just sit in the slot and work properly, but you might be f*cked up by bios and vbios [msi says there is no gpu whitelist/blacklist so its a small chance but still].
Many people did that, so you would just need to do some research what upgrades to what.
If you would like to upgrade nvidia->amd or amd->nvidia then you are on uncharted territory just like me and you basically have a 50/50 chances that it will work [in earlier generations of latops it didn't work, but now we have some of those combos on the market so the support might have been added].
I'm still waiting for my hdd adapters, and I'm doing it on a fresh motherboard, so we should know for sure as soon as hdd adapters arrive if a nvidia/amd swap works... -

I am beyond angry right now. I posted about my problem here a month ago on how my fan is making a low whirring sound. I sent it in for repair to MSI and got my laptop back 2 weeks later. According to them they replaced the fan.
Straight out of the box, the fan started making a whirring sound again. It was lower than before but after 2 or 3 hours, the sound of whirring was back to what it was originally.
Added bonus: The 1TB HDD it came with is now making clicking noises.
I bought this laptop 4 weeks ago. I got to use it for barely a week before I had to send it in for repair. I got it back after 2 weeks but had no chance to use it since I was away for a week for work (And needed the laptop ofcourse but did not have it on me).
I am back now for a week and now this laptop is exactly where I started. I have to leave for vacation in a week for 3 weeks.
I am beyond incensed right now. I have written to MSI again and I assume they will just ask me to send it in again. Obviously I wont be here for next three weeks so I have no idea how to revieve it once i have sent it. And ofcourse I needed a laptop while Ill be away for three weeks.
Sorry I am just really really angry right now. I saved up for so long so I could finally get a laptop worthy of gaming and this is what I get. -

If you bought it through a custom shop I'd recommend to contact them directly, they might be able to arrange a faster turnaround time for you by fixing it themselves or possibly helping you do it yourself.
-
Edit: Just gave the vendor a call. He said that I have one year warranty so I can return it without a problem. -

So I just got a used GT70 0ND and I've been having a ton of issues. A lot of them have gone away in updating to Windows 8.1 but I'm now having issues with the GTX 675M graphics card.
When I update the drivers from the MSI website, they are over a year old and I am unable to play any game. They crash at start-up and say "Graphics Device is not available at this time".
When I go the the NVIDIA website, they recommend using the ones on the MSI website but updating to the newest drivers available allows me to launch games. The issue is I get horrendous performance (worse than a laptop that I had with much lower specs) and I am unable to use the Turbo function anymore (turns off after 2 seconds of turning it on).
So now I'm confused. Are there more up to date drivers specifically for MSI laptops so I can use Turbo or am I doomed? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
So it's better if you use Nvidia's latest driver, and then mix with Afterburner to overclock the GPU. -

Ok I messed up big time. I spilled some water on my laptop (GT60-2pe)
How screwed am i?
It was about quarter of a glass directly on the keyboard. I powered it down immediately, Took the battery out, took out the back panel, removed the HDD and CD bay. Took off the keyboard as well. Dried up all the water I could see and have left the laptop upside down to dry all day.
Could not find a way to get to the top of the motherboard so I could not see if there was any water on it.
Have not turned it on until now. Want to give it another dry to dry before I plug it in.
My question is, if the laptop urns out to be damaged, how screwed am I? Will MSI be able to repair it and if so, any idea on the cost?
Really hitting myself right now. I was very quick in removing everything but now I am just scared. -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Do you have an air compressor? If you do, use it to drive the water out.
Also, best to remove the keyboard and inspect further, because water could be stuck anywhere internally.
If the surface looks dry, use air compressor to dry it anyway.
As far as warranty goes, if you had registered your system within 30 days of purchase then you could activate ADC warranty.
If you have not done so and if it's also beyond the 30-day then MSI will charge you for the repair service. -
Edit: I am in France, not US if that helps -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
If not, then it's best for you to call MSI tech support directly to verify your serial number, only MSI can confirm whether you are eligible or not due to "full registration w/ADC = online registration + submission of proof of purchase".
If you only had added the product to your online profile without submitting proof of purchase then the registration wasn't completed. -
Mean time i will go cry over the fact that I just poured down my hopes and dreams of the last 5 years -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Call MSI directly then ask for ADC coverage. -

How many times have you guys had to send in your laptops? I have the GT60 and I've had to send it in 2 times already to get the DC jack fixed and I have 1 month of warranty left and the left shift key is being unresponsive so I'm going to have to send it in again... 3 times in the past 6 months.

Keyboard issues is one thing I haven't had happen to me yet but I'm pretty nitpicky about cleaning it out and not letting anything damage it because I use it a lot and don't want anything to happen to it.
I can tell you that twice in such a short period isn't normal for the average person with the machine. Not saying you're throwing it against walls or anything but I'd just attempt to be a little gentler with it and treat it like you would anything else that cost this much. If you've already been doing so, you should be covered under warranty for a while yet assuming that the 6 months you reference is the time frame you've had it. I believe they do repairs for three warranty claims before the machine is replaces or credit issued.
EDIT: touched base with our service team. There isn't a set amount of times in warranty terms but typically fourth repair for same issue they'll replace the machine if possible. -

I wanna upgrade my RAM, but one of the slots is some how in not a good position what should i do? As you see, the orange color thing is interrupting.

You can leave the cpu section in place if you don't knock it. Leave the screw marked "a" in place, remove b and c along with the gpu heatsink.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
It's highly recommended to remove the heatsink to install the RAM sticks.
But if you must risk this by removing partial screws, then please be very careful not to bent the heat pipe otherwise it would be destroyed. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The heatpipe bridge is connected to the cpu part via a pad, once the b and c screws are removed it should lift off, no bending needed. The "a" screw should hold down the cpu heatsink by itself if it is not knocked so that a repasting of the cpu is not needed.
-
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Not everyone is adventurous and does this all the time therefore it's not recommended to do it that way.
Any mistake can damage the heatsink assembly by accident. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
The way I am suggesting involves removing less parts from the system. For the careful novice it is the safest and easiest way of getting to the ram slots. You will still be able to re paste the thermal bridge if you like.
Remember the thermal bridge was added to the gpu heatsink and is not soldered to the cpu part in any way, just the thermal pad and the b and c screws, feel free to open one up and check yourself if you don't believe me Kevin -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
That's true, but you are speaking from professional point of view.
We all have done this before, but it's better to be safe than sorry because no one wants to end up with a machine needing a RMA.
It's going to be either the heatpipe that gets damaged, or the memory module since not everyone can be as cautious as you are.
Rest assured, anyone can follow your advise if they feel that they can do it risk-free anyway as long as a warning is provided on the side. -
Soo... I finally got the hdd adapters few days ago... updated bios to a new and unlocked medion one. Installed everything and...
... 8970m doesnt work.
W8.1 sees it but turns it off with code 43 in the device manager.
This code would mean either that the card is broken(100%sure its not because when I mount it in my gx70 it works) , or that there is a driver issue... Tried some tweaks in bios, tried million different drivers and still nothing. Kinda running out of options for now. At this point I'm back to considering selling my gx70 and the i7 4810+ ms 1763 mobo and simply moving on to a completely new laptop:/
edit.
Im also thinking about force flashing an msi bios in there, but im still wondering if this would be worth the risk and if it might even change anything...
Edit2.
Yep...
...fflashing msi branded bios into medion branded mobo will brick it...
... tomorrow ill tru to revive it but the whole setup is going to be sold ... -
Hi everyone! I was wondering is anyone can clarify or help me with a problem I've been having with my gt60 that I bought last summer. It has been working splendidly until yesterday when the video crashed while playing gta4. Eventually, the graphics card wasnt being recognized and the fan starting making loud noises and was constantly on. I eventually has to refresh Windows 8 when It stopped loading properly. The problem seemed sovled and everything was working again for a very short time. Then i played GTA 4 again it the same problem occurred. I read somewhere that this could be the end of my graphics card. Is this the actual problem? It's a GeForce GTX 675M. I also have 12GB DDRIII RAM with an i7 3630QM. If it is my graphics card, should I upgrade? Is that possible?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Best to contact MSI directly to claim warranty because there is a problem obviously. -
I have to say, outstanding service from a couple guys in this thread, some experts an some users alike.
Excellent wealth of information to be found within.
I just bought a refurb GT70 ONC, paid a fair bit for a used NB, an hope I made a good buy.
With that said, I will be buying from one of the retailers here next, this coming spring probably. -
Hello ! Got MSI GT60 2OD 16gb ram nvidia 780m, need help and advice on updating the BIOS! On the product page, (MSI website) can be found BIOS 50Y and firmware 1513 . What is the update order? First you have to update firmware and then bios? Firmware is EC KBC? Im former Clevo owner and as I can remember EC must be updated first , then bios , but not sure about MSI . Of course there is an important question, how risky to do an update? Is it worth it. Found this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/733984-bad-bios-flash-msi-gt60-2od-help-me-fix-my-notebook.html and now doubt....
Thanks in advance for your answers -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Firstly why do you want to update the bios?
-
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
BIOS is updated within BIOS environment, and EC firmware is updated within the Windows OS.
Once BIOS and EC are updated, then you will need to disconnect both AC & battery power to reset EC memory in order for the new firmware to take effect.
BIOS/EC update are somewhat mature on MSI systems, therefore the risk is very low if you follow instructions properly. -
Thank you ,Kevin! So I will use for bios update this method http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Flash_BIOS_by_UEFI_BIOS_Setup_Utility_en.pdf , looks like pretty easy ,just like EC under wndows )
