Hopefully it is all fixed, it was a good reason to update it.

    Hello all,

I bought a GT60 0ND-250US back in March 2013. The laptop has been great, until the last week. For the last week while playing games I have had a lot of lockups. Then last night it turned off and would not turn back on. Today I thought I'd open it up and take a look around (I'm an IT guy for Raytheon, hardware does not scare me). I pulled the memory (bottom 2 sticks), tried the power, no go. Next I removed the SSD (I installed it when I first got it), again no go. Pulled the hard drive, still no go. Next I pulled the videocard, and everything powered up. I replaced everything else, all is still good. Put the videocard back, no go. So I assume the videocard is bad. I had the GeForce GTX 675M. Since I have to replace it, I'd like to upgrade it at the same time.

Does anyone know what cards work with the heat pipe/sink that I have? It looks like this one.

I would like the GTX 770m or maybe the 870m. Maybe even the ATI 7970m/8970m.

    Thanks in advance.

    Brian

    Hello,

I've installed SM bus controller chipset from MSI downloads, and now the power LED stays on RED/ORANGE, don't know why, and I've even uninstalled nVidia GPU driver, but still the light stuck on Red/Orange, any help would be great.

    Thanks

EDIT: re-installed nvidia driver and updated BIOS, now the problem is gone

What does the GPU usage indicator (turned on in the tabs at the top of the nvidia control panel) say is using the GPU?

EDIT: I see you edited, it was likely some program accidentally set to the dGPU.

    Hello,

I don't know why CPU stuck on 2.69 GHz and doesn't come down, I don't play video games, or render something heavy, don't know why this had happened, any help would be great.

This is due to Intel SpeedStep technology (EIST), and the lowest speed is 800MHz.
If you are idling then the CPU will throttle down to reduce power consumption.
    ARK | Intel® Core™ i7-4800MQ Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz)

The overclocking is done automatically by the processor depending by amount of processing threads usable by certain applications.
3.7GHz is basically a single core performance while the other three cores are turned off.

Don't worry yourself with how it works, unless you wish to overclock it using Intel XTU software.
However, please note that the use of improper overclocking setting via XTU can render system unresponsive which requires the CMOS battery to be disconnected and reconnected, or processor to be removed and reinstalled. Also, the CMOS battery is hard to reach.

Thanks Kevin for your reply, but the issue is actually, it does not throttle down, it is stuck on 2.7 GHz, it doesn't throttle down nor up. I don'tuse the laptop and closed all unnecessary app, but still on 2.7 GHz, wondering what the reason is!

Something funny happened, I've refreshed my PC, and now everthing works, as it should, but, in task manager I see the maximum speed is 2.7 GHz, that is odd, it was written 2.69 GHz before all this happens, wondering what is the reason!

Last update: for everyone having this issue (cpu does not throttle doown), is because hyper-v is enabled, after I've refreshed my PC, hyper-v was disbaled, I've enbaled and here comes the problem, cpu stuck on 2.69 GHz, after disabling it, everything went fine.

Also check your power settings as that will impact what clocks the system will go to as well.

    Here's whats going on;

Using the AT2020 USB microphone on my desktop windows 7 64bit, the input volume in audacity is set to 0.3 and the volume comes in nice and loud and clear. I'm able to rap over an instrumental and i can hear the voice really well in the recording.

    HOWEVER;

I have 2 laptops both running Windows 8.1 64bit, and with the exact same settings in audacity (including windows micboost options), the same microphone records much much lower. Some people recommended to update Realtek drivers, and that did not fix the problem.

    Any ideas guys?

Such device does not require any driver to run since the driver is supplied by Windows, updating Realtek driver will not have any effect at all.
This issue is most likely Win 8.1 related, try setting microphone level first, and then MIC boost in the properties if such option is available.

Is this a normal behavior from activating Hyper-V? Have you tested it before on a different system such as your desktop?
If this is a glitch/bug with BIOS then it's recommended to try the latest BIOS and EC firmware before reporting such issue to MSI to resolve it.

    Excellent, well done.
For 780M overclock, you can either use MSI Afterburner and increase the core frequency and memory frequency to receive performance boost.
Or you can talk to Svet at MSI forum whom will be able to provide a custom VGA BIOS to provide even more performance boost.

Having a problem with the Blu-ray drive of my GT60 2OD 3k laptop. I've had it about 10 months, bought it from overclockers.co.uk and it's been fine until the last few weeks. The problem has been intermittent. DVDs are fine as are some fairly simple blu-rays (just movie, not too many extras). But when I play discs with lots of features, it refuses to load.

Tried PowerDVD and TotalMedia Theatre. Also tried it with AnyDVD first. Just get read errors and the disc refuses to play. Could be with dual layer discs, since it only happens with discs with lots of stuff on. I've tried updating the firmware, even though the version on the MSI site is the same version as the drive. Also tried the refresh volumes trick that I found worked on previous generation MSI laptops.

The drive is a TSSTcorp BDDVDW SN-506BB by the way.

I could try and get it fixed under warranty, but can see this being a pain since the problem only happens with certain discs and they might be unable to replicate it. And I don't really want MSI to do a factory refresh so I have to reinstall everything. Also would prefer not to be without the laptop for a few weeks whilst they try and fix it.

Anyone have any experience with MSI in the UK? Do they take ages? Will they do a factory refresh before considering a hardware problem.

It may be easier to just get another optical drive and fit it myself. Is this easy to do on a GT60 or will I have to disassemble the whole machine (and invalidate what's left of my warranty) just to get at the optical drive?

Any recommended replacements? A new SN-506BB is only about £60, but not I'm sure about getting another one if it's also going to fail in the same way after 10 months. What else will fit and is reliable? Also I've never used the blu-ray burner, just the blu-ray reader & DVD reader & writer.

Any advice, hints or recommendations would be really appreciated.

    Cheers.

Gently wipe the lens with a cotton bud (I did on my DVD burner and it stopped grinding on some problematic disks).

Has anyone modified the bottom door to get some better air flow to the cpu and gpu? I am thinking of taking mine and making some bigger slots in it.

Thanks for the advice, but didn't make any difference. Looks like I need to attempt to get it fixed myself or get it fixed on warranty. In the UK, apparently D&G Henry do the repair work for MSI. Anyone had any experience with them - reliability, speed, etc

    Hi

I own one GT70-0NC with a GTX 670M video card. which are the possibilities to update this gpu? I was waiting for the 970M but I read it is not compatible and also mi notebook could not to be compatible with (some) 770/780/870/880 because of the vbios or something more.

can you help me about the steps to upgrade it (which card could work, if 970 can work in a future with heatsink/vbios, etc)

    thanks in advance

770M is the max you can switch to, but you will also need the heatsink for the 770M.

Ok I have seen there is one bigger heatpipe in the 770/780/870/880 heatsink.

But is not even more compatible a 780M with my gt70 0nc than the 770M (as I remember for reading in forums). Or if I can change the notebook bios to make run a 870M or 880M (don't know if 770/780M also)

Has anyone figured out a fix for the blu-ray drives as I can't get mine to read anything. At most it will pop up the title at the start and then when I go to open it, it craps out.

I'm not aware of an overarching issue with the BR drives. That sounds like a software problem to me. I'd try to reinstall it or use a new program.

I'm about to get a GT60 of my own, the one with the 970m. Can the owners give me some feedback, things to considerate, is it a good laptop, heat problems, build quality, poor touchpad, how is the battery in real life usage....Something?

Is the new 970M not compatible with old GT70 heatsinks and from other partners? As you can see in this video you can upgrade the heatsink in a gt72 for the 970M/980M but...... do you think msi will make new heatsinks for other computers? I don't think so..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZZ5hGDZpI8

It's a gaming notebook, so there will be moderate amount of heat which is considered reasonable during gameplay.
System can feel hot during summer time if the room doesn't have any air conditioner.
Build quality overall is pretty good, and personally I dislike the clickpad.
Battery life is about 2 to 3 hours depending by power plan settings.

Since MSI has never released such upgrade programs before so it's going to be very interesting to everyone once they come out with such offer.

Kevin If I get the heatsink "pro" for the gt70 can I upgrade with a 780M? It is the best choice even more than the 870 (less powerful) or 880 (10% better but 50% expensive). I have the 30U bios installed and I can downgrade to the 30P. Also some second hand cards are msi built (from gt70) and others can update vbios with the MSI 780M one.

    what do you think?

With the right system bios (as you mentioned) and the heatsink for a GK104 model (680M, 780M, 880m etc) then it should work without issue. Even the standard drivers should just install.

Meaker, and which is the right system bios? I have the 30U that is the last one. perhaps this will work? or will it be necessary the 30P bios?

And about the heatsink, it doesn't seem to have a lot of differences anyway. Perhaps some extra cooling but I don't supose a little more.

    This is my heatsink

    http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTE2M1gxNjAw/z/~1kAAOxyHE5RowDc/$(KGrHqJ,!rQFGJWNw)bwBRowDcEN+Q~~60_57.JPG

    This is the "pro" version

    http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/OTAwWDE2MDA=/z/wbUAAOSwfcVUC6sR/$_57.JPG

can I try with my heatsink and if I don't get good temperatures buy the "pro" one?

And even here they say it is the same heatsink for 670M-680M-780M

The .10p and .30p vbios files worked fine for me running the GTX780M in my 16F3.

Fermi cards (670, 675M) have quite a different layout to the kepler cards (670MX, 675MX, 680M etc). The aluminium posts on the heatsink will hit into the inductors at points and not make contact with the vrms properly.

.30p vbios? I thought they were the .30p bios for the laptop.

Is this one to make the 780M to work 100%? http://download.msi.com/bos_exe/E1762IMS.30P.zip

And about the 30u that is the last one, can it work with this one? I have found one 780M from a MSI laptop and I am considering get this one. then I don't need to flash vbios..

Hello. I have an insane or brilliant question that I would like your input on - Overcoming Nvidia Optimus on internal LCD

Facts #1 - Nvidia Optimus with our integrated Intel HD 4600 will never let us have anything more than 60HZ on our internal LCD (the Chi Mei panel).

Facts #2 - The miniDisplay Port out is not muxed with the Intel HD chipset, thus external displays can be powered with 144HZ.

My Question (I even drew a picture today) - is the bellow possible?
    fuoptimus.jpg

Thank you for any reply, flaming or diss! :)

You flash firmware related to the shipping os, it has no bearing on what you then run on it.

It's to do with the firmware structure it shipped with rather than any software.

has anyone successfully put a gtx 880m or 980m in their gt70? mine is running a first get 675 and i need something with more kick. I'm staying the hell away from the gt72 since it is a soldered processor and i've already upgraded the processor in my gt 70 so any input would be nice.

It is scarce yet so we need more time to find cards available for testing. Aside from perhaps a heatsink mod, 970m should work as new GT60/70 sport it, but 980m we have yet to see. I don't see why not :p

I would be surprised if going from a 880m to 980m would throw up issues. It's likely just going to require having an up to date bios. Testing will eventually confirm this though.

I updated my GT60 (16F3) to the latest 51x bios successfully. Still using win 7. I am waiting also for some gt60 (16F3)/70 owners to put this bad 980m and put it on the test when it comes to compatibility and benchmarking.

I'm going from a 4 gig 675 to either the 880 or 980 hoping it is doable

The older models are less likely than the 870/880 models of course. Still a fair chance :)

If i can put an 8gig 880 in then I'm happy with that. I know they aren't cheap though so I need to make sure it will work in my system or i'm boned,

So any news updating to the new gpu with your nb? I want to see 970/980m running on GT60 (16F3) or the GT70 (1762) with no compatibility issues.

As far as I know 900m cards should be no problem for Haswell generation GT60/GT70. Ivy Bridge would need to be tested and in case their BIOS updated with the correct vbios boot code. I will try a 980m once I get my hands on one (hard to come by a MSI made card with 970m heatsink). Once I do and verify that everything works my 780m is up for sale including original heatsink.
