The issue you are having seems like the one I had with my GT70. Something about power not allowing the CPU to run at full performance unless you used throttlestop. If I remember correctly, there was indeed a bios update that sorted it out.

Now the next question is... since you are using a previous gen of GT60, you might need a bigger PSU to fully use your system to the max. I think you might be running at the ceiling of your current PSU and while it works, you might overload it at some point. The following GT series after yours, used hybrid power (giving extra juice from the battery).

Hey Ryzeki, hmm so I should update to the latest bios update and get a new powe brick? Any model number? Or the voltage or watt number? MSI's website is still down so I cannot update the bios yet. So the gt60 2od power brick is the one I would want?

You need unlocked EC firmware to benefit from such AC adapter.

    Hello All,
Has been awhile since I have been too the forums here. Life just happens. Anyway, am looking for some sort of a guide on replacing the OEM 64g Msata with something larger. Can someone point me in the right direction on this and recommend a good replacement for the old Msata? This is going into a GT70 ONC-011US. If i missed it in my search i apologize.

Can anyone please tell me why my msi gt60 0nd has the .50r bios version instead of the .30u or something? Which one is newer?

You needed the unlocked EC from MSI.

    There are version 1/3/5/7, 1 & 3 are for Win7 and 5 & 7 are for Win8.x.
5 & 7 provides UEFI boot and Secure Boot support. And U is newer than R.
So you should look for 5.U or 7.U or newer, but don't look for 1.U or 3.U.

Hey kevin thank you, Okay so the original owner of this laptop ordered the laptop WITH NO OS installed, he then installed windows 7 on it. But the laptop has .50r bios installed. Does that mean if I want to update I would have to keep updating bios with a windows 8 bios even though I am using windows 7? Also on the laptop I see the windows 8 sticker (assuming the 0nd model comes with windows 8?). I did further testing and when I game Diablo 3 without THROTTLESTOP and without my AC ADAPTER PLUGGED IN (Just running on Battery) my laptop gets 40-60fps on intense mob fighting. Once I plug in my ac adapter and fight mobs again (Without THROTTLESTOP on), my fps drops to 20 fps. So I am guessing the issue is coming from the ac adapter and power/cpu? I only get low fps when there are a lot of monsters. But the weird thing is when I run just on battery, my fps is fine even with fighting against a lot of monsters. Help please? Is it a bios issue? Windows 7? Do I need to upgrade to Windows 8? New ac adapter?

Does anyone know a good replacement for the AC Adapter for the GT60? It doesn't have to be an original one and I'd like to get a smaller brick if possible. I recently built a gaming rig and I dont game on my laptop anymore so I dont need the full 180W brick, just something that is good enough for charging while under medium load. I noticed that some ASUS laptops have the same type of adapter so I'm not sure where to look for all compatible adapters.

Check the PSU ratings (Voltage and current supplied) before getting one. Also you can mod the cable (the one that goes from the PSU to the notebook) and replace the Asus with the MSI one (this way you don't change the load balancing caused by using a different cable type). Meaker has a guide on modding a PSU cable. Check his profile for that, I don't remember the thread :)

Check your power settings while plugged in as it's more likely a software issue than hardware. A bad brick would just cut out more often than just make the machine run slow.

Try updating the BIOS and EC first since they could be involved with this issue you are having before you move onto the next step.

    Hey Kevin,

Okay I will need your help, if I am going to do a bios and ec update, Should i use windows 8 bios/ec version or windows 7 bios/ec version? This laptop is running windows 7 at the moment but the bios version is 50r which you mentioned is windows 8 correct? Can I use the OS windows 7 to update a windows 8 BIOS/EC?

Stick to Win8 version since it covers both Win8 & Win7.
So from 5.0R to 5.0whatever is latest.

Hi Kevin, thank you very much. Now the next question is, I would update the bios with the DOS mode in windows 7 correct? For example the MSI website provides instruction on how to flash windows 7 and windows 8. I would choose the windows 8 BIOS and flash it via the windows 7 instruction correct? I want to make sure before flashing. Thanks!

Best to update it in DOS if you are going to cross-flash a different version, but if it's same version series then you can just update it using IN-BIOS updater within the BIOS itself.

Hey Kevin I still cannot flash my bios, it won't let flash it when i'm in dos mode. During windows 8.1 dos mode when i type "Flash" it says error command" and I don't have the secure boot in bios like the msi website shows for windows 8.1. I don't know whats wrong

What happens if you use a USB stick with dos on it? Windows 8.1 command prompt is just emulated dos.

    Hey Meaker,

I am using a USB stick formatted for dos mode like on the msi website with the uneboot thing. Whenever I get to the command where i type C: and the C/ :Dir and then it lists whats inside the usb, I type flash and enter but it says error only. I talked to Zoltan but he does not know what to do.

Here is a screenshot of the error. This was when I had windows 7 but now I installed windows 8.1 pro. I still get the same error when trying to flash the bios via DOS mode. IMG_1978.jpg

Try flashing the BIOS within the BIOS using IN-BIOS updater.

    It should be under Advanced.
    UEFI BIOS or IN-BIOS updater.

    Hello,

I have a MSI GT60 and I'm trying to connect a monitor to it, but I keep getting the "Check Signal Cable" message.

It is a Samsung 943BWX and I'm using a HDMI->VGA adapter. I have already installed the drivers available on Samsung website. Any ideas??

    Thanks,

Hadn't used my GT70 in a couple weeks. Went to turn it on, but I ended up having to plug it in because the battery was dead. It was in hibernate mode (not sleep/suspend). Any idea what drained the battery and how I can stop it? Should I just shut it down instead?

The system drains about 5 to 8% a day even when it was shut down due to EC being used.
This is a design limitation and cannot be patched, the best way is to take the battery out.

When updating my GT70's Realtek audio drivers(6.0.1.7324) to the newest version on the Realtek driver page, the audio manager isn't there anymore. If I install the drivers on the GT70 page, the advanced settings gear icon isn't on the manager. Is there a way to update to the newest version with the audio manager?

As of right now, I have no way of updating the bios. Kevin, my bios settings' advanced tab does not have UEFI Bios or In-BIOS updater. I still have to turn on Throttlestop to stop the gpu/cpu lag. I am also having GPU and CPU heat issues. I have tried both Heatsink (one with the bridge and one without the bridge). Both heatsink's layout matches exactly the gtx 780m layout. With both heatsink, I get about 93 degrees with Far Cry 4 so the new bridged heatsink doesn't cool better. I run ultra settings. Game shuts off and computer freezes when I reach 93 Degrees. I paste the thermal pads and thermal paste on correctly. Anyone know the issue? My CPU reaches about 78-80 degrees as well when playing FC4. Can anyone confirm with me their temperatures using a gtx 780m on Ultra with FC4?

I had my DC jack in my GT60 go bad... again. I pulled the whole thing apart to see if it was a simple soldering fix, but it looks like it's something internal on the board. Do any of you recommend a particular place to get this done? My computer is still in pieces on my desk...

update** Now my gtx 780m crashes when it hits 82 degrees for Dying Light and Furmark stress testing. It always freezes at 82 degrees. Did multiple tests. BUT when i play Far Cry 4, my gpu hits up to 87 degrees and it runs fine, no crashes no nothing. Any help here?

Have you checked your VRMs are making good contact with the heatsink? Are you running stock clocks? Have you tried lowering them slightly to see if there is an impact?

    Update**

Okay I am able to update my bios to latest 50x. That didn't help with the BD PROCHOT throttle issue. I am thinking I need to do a vbios update on my gtx 780m? I repasted both my CPU and GPU with IC DIAMOND thermal paste and my temps has drastically lowered and are stable. my GPU gets to about 80 degrees max now while gaming max settings with turbo fan and cooling pad. My CPU gets to 65ish only now, so no more CPU heat spikes. The problem now is, whenever I do not turn on my turbo fan and the gpu temps reaches 82 degrees or more for a few minutes, my computer freezes. If my temperature stays at 80 or below, it will never freeze. Any help here? Keep in mind, my laptop is the MSI GT60 0nd with original gpu gtx 675m. I upgraded to the gtx 780m. I also notice my FAN does not speed up accordingly to gpu temps rising up. My temps can hit 60-70-80 degrees and my fan will only turn up a little bit compared to my msi with the gtx 675m, where as the fan speed kicks in already at 60-70-80 degrees and I can hear the fan well.

    Hello,

Guys does the capacity of the SSD/HDD matters? e.g. Can I install a 1 TB SSD or 2 TB HDD?

    Thanks a lot.

Capacity won't be the issue but the thickness will. Some drives can be 12.7mm vs 9.5mm vs 7mm. You'll want to stick with the 9.5 and 7mm drives. Some 12.7mm can be installed into Optical bay using caddy

The good news is that there are 1TB SSDs and 2TB HDDs in the right form factor, larger HDDs (if they exist) will be taller, and some old 2TB drives are tall as well. SSDs over 1TB are still pretty exotic and will cost you an arm and a leg.
