Best to stick with 9.5mm HDD if you need capacity, otherwise 512GB SSD will serve you perfectly.

Thanks Kevin, You have stated, that I should use a 9.5 mm drive, but unfortunately Samsung 850 is 7 mm, so what should I do? Is there any adapter/spacer, which I can use/order?

PS: I know that crucial comes with 9.5mm spacer, but in the benchmarks Samsung has performed way better!

My bad, you can use 9.5mm or thinner drives.
So 7mm is usable, the space part can be left alone.

I recently received a GT70 Dominator 895. I have noticed the plastic around the touchpad toggle button has some flex to it and when pressed makes a creaking type sound. My question is, is this normal due to the lower amount of plastic surround the key?

While I really like my GT70, I'm definitely concerned about the expense of warranty repair. It cost me $46 to ship my laptop to California, and that was with the cheapest shipping method USPS had. The turn-around time seems to be over a month if counting the ship-to and return-ship times. If I get it back and it still has troubles, it'll be another $50 + 1 month to do it all over again. Perhaps I've been spoiled by my Thinkpad warranty--they would just overnight me a shipping box with a prepaid label.

One problem with my laptop is the power switch. It would stick/sometimes not work. I'd have to press it multiple times to get the system to turn on. Also, the system would power itself off and on sometimes just by moving the laptop. In the past, I've never had good experiences in getting intermittent problems fixed the first time around, so I'm fairly concerned about this one.

I have a Microcenter near me, but Microcenter's website didn't list MSI in their warranty repair vendor list. Is there any alternative for getting local warranty repair done, or will I always have to ship the machine to California?

The best panel for the model is the 90% gamut AUO panel.

Hi. I have a strange fan problem. The fan starts as soon as the power button turns to orange (which indicates that NVIDIA GPU is active) AND it stops as soon as power button turns back to white. It produces very annoying noise. I think it is called fan pulsating or something. NVIDIA GPU's temp is around 30-40 celsius while this happens so I don't know why the fan starts to spin. I recently plugged my laptop to TV with HDMI cable. This problem occured after that one. If I use GT70 FAN CONTROL app and set fan speed to %10, it works but it stays there all the time. It doesn't start to spin even the temps are rising. By the way, I have MS1763 laptop with i7 4710MQ and GTX 870M.

I'm pretty sure the vram has good contact with the heatsink. If the Vram does not have good contact, does the GPU temp rise? Or does the VRAM temperature not show on the GPU temp? For example on MSI afterburner the GPU temp can be 82 but the vram temps are like 95+? Is that why my laptop freezes at 82 degrees? I don't think anyone's gaming laptop freezes at 82 degrees.

The voltage regulating chips around the edge of the pcb, not the vram :)

The two smaller rectangular ones that are side by side next to the silver square right? Yeah the heatsink is all contacting that I believe. Just in case one of these does not have proper contact, would the actual gpu temperature be higher than shown on MSI afterburner? Is that why it is freezing only at 82 degrees?

    Dear All,

Just a quick question. Does the GT70 0nd support port multiplier on its esata? I want to connect a 4 drive bay via esata and want to verify if all the drives will be able to be seen via the esata port. I apologize if this has been asked before...

    Any help would be great...thanks...

VRM temperatures are not monitored and are separate from the core so you just need to check.

Thank you for the swift reply! :) By the way, the drive bay supports USB 3.0 as well, so I shouldn't have any problem connecting it via this...any confirmation would be great!

    Thanks again.

Having a strange display problem on my 2 month old GT70. My display does this every once in awhile. Sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for up to 5 minutes. But at the same time, my external monitor connected via HDMI is unaffected. Any ideas?

This looks like LED panel problem, which could be caused by a defective driver board.
Have you tried it without the external display? How about driver update?

Thanks for the reply, Kevin! Haven't tried it without the external display. Will unplug it and run just the laptop display for a couple days. The glitch hasn't happened at all today so far. Please excuse my ignorance, but where would the best place be to find an update for the driver I need?

    Hi again. Another question :
Can a msi 570m 1.5Gb fit in a GT70 ( Ivy bridge version ) without the need to flash this card with a 670m vbios ?

It should fit, but you don't want to update the VBIOS from a different GPU because it can brick the GPU card.

Thank you for the link to the driver update, Kevin. Turns out that was the version I already had, so I'm good on that front. Haven't had the glitch for about a day now. Does it multiple times a day until I ask for a solution. Go figure.

So probably driver board. Is that separate from the motherboard?

The GPU is on another board, the circuitry that actually powers and sends data to the panel is on the motherboard. Check your cable is seated correctly, it could be something like a microwave nearby that a slightly loose cable is picking up interference from.

Driver board is part of LED screen, if problem persists then you will have to contact MSI to go about getting it diagnosed and repaired.

If the GPU isn't supported then it will not work.
Unless Nvidia starts supporting it in their driver, or someone circumvented (hacked) it.

So I have a GT70 2OC that's a 1.5 years old. The BIOS just randomly stopped working and they had to switch the motherboard. Than god for that 2-year warranty but still.... how does a motherboard die after 1.5 years :(

A motherboard is a very complex component with many parts that all need to work. Vibrations, electrical shocks and general wear can create/expose weaknesses that can cause it to fail.

    Hi,
How old is your laptop (MSI GT60/70 only) ? Does it still work fine?
Currently, a guy in my area is selling this ( ~900$):
    MSI GT70, Core i7 3630QM, GTX 675MX, 8GB RAM, 1TB Sata
    It's about 2 years old.
Should I buy it? Of course I will do some stress test (CPU, RAM, VGA, Monitor), but is there anything else I should check?
    Thank you so much.

Price seems a tad high to me. Check CPU/GPU temps under stress. These things run warm.
