Thank you avalance all clear as day now ,well it is a great upgrade over the existing Alienware ..and I'm absolutely satisfied, well I'm just temporarily here for a job , I'm from Europe as well Croatia.
-
one more thing ..although this GT72 outperforms my 4 year old Alienware which is natural considering the advancement in 4 years , the raw power is overwhelming , features ,and design amazing ..however my old Alien still has a better monitor the picture is more vibrant and crisp , I don't actually see this differences until I fire up my Alien. Also Iv noticed the video editing somehow is better on the old 2xATI5870 then with GTX980 everything else is in favor of the nvida monster

Maybe you can download a ICC file http://www.notebookcheck.com/uploads/tx_nbc2/GT72_01.icm (but this is for n on IPS/ TN panel GT72 out of the test http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Update-MSI-GT72-GTX-980M-Notebook.128927.0.html) may any ICC exist to check for color calibration. Maybe anyone has a file for the ips screens?
If you try to use the intel GPU the screen will have different black than in the nVidia GPU mode, i guess thats all up on the color calibration, no idea why but my intel GPU provides better colors (for reading text and watching video), i raised "red color" a little, and lowered "blue" color slightly in the nvidia color management, so for me thats better.

@ avalance : Thanks for your answer. As i am not in a hurry, i will wait a little longer, and wait, until notebookcheck tests the AW 15 aswell (then i can compare the 2 Reviews) .
I dont have an actual problem with the noise level. It just mustnt be a high frequent tone. That is really freaking me out
I´ve already had a 15,6" medion with a 670M (GT 60 barebone) and the noise was not okay for me. It was very high pitched, and even in idle, the fan was already quite loud.
Is there any programme to control the fan rpm yet?dvojinov likes this. -

At least in Germany, where this employee is working, it should be true.
But in Germany, you dont have any problem with returning your laptop. If you bought it online (or via telephone), you can return it within 14 days without stating a reason for returning. -
Yes of course, so i also have no idea how the Alienware 15 inch or 17inch will shoot out in a direct conclusion, i guess if the pricetag is similar it will be hard for MSI but we will see. Alienware devices will also have really nice build quality (some/lot points better than last generation MSI devices).
Btw so i´m from germany too, and i did not have any complaints about the 17.3" TN panel as far as i can confirm everything is better than "TN" expected, okay so if you sit in front of the device and lean the display more back or forwards to you, the colors will grey out, but it is an TN panel, side view angels still great, thats the only "wanna have IPS over TN" thing, everything else is really fine and the TN display seems very more than okay (same day in direct conclusion to an Asus G7xX almost same specs with IPS and 970M and SSD! for same priceag and i bought the GT72 without! SSD in the store).
And yes theres no problem within "Fernabsatzgesetz" to return the device if thereś any complain about it (poor retailers in germany).

is it true that is laptop has a mechanical keyboard?? Can I get cherry brown?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
That's the GT80 that has a mechanical keyboard and it uses cherry mx brown switches yes. The GT72 has a top of the range membrane laptop keyboard.
-
This ICC profile works with IPS panel , like I said not a huge difference if you don't know where to look but still better then without it.
I believe you could achieve the same if you go through W color calibration process , however to be honest, I'm to lazy to do it
What could make a bigger difference is a profile according to YUV color-space as it has a wider range ..however ..that may cause another issue of illegal colors within the RGB range if you do video editing and stuff like this , for normal viewing of BRays and other on modern flat screens this again shouldn't be a problem . -

I swapped the 1TB HDD for a 512GB Crucial SSD, so I have 4x 128GB sticks (2x Raid 0 arrays) + 1x 512GB, so about 1TB in overall SSD storage. It's okay for now; in the future I will further upgrade them when they get a little bit cheaper.
I believe the MSI bloatware can be disabled in MSconfig, but some of it is nice to have. I enjoy my electric blue keyboard backlight ^^ Besides, with SSDs you hardly feel the impact of the bloatware on startup.
My main complaints are the location of the trackpad (if it were centered it would be better) and the design of the motherboard. First of all, it is ****ing retarded to place 2 SODIMM slots beneath the motherboard, requiring complete disassembly to upgrade your RAM. Second, the fact that they included an empty 2.5" bay but no SATA connector for it is such a waste of space and a tease. Sure, savvy users have figured juryrigging solutions to slot an extra HD there but that shouldn't be necessary.
Other than that, I love this machine. -

solved my Realtek Digital OPTICLA output mistery
of my GT72
Once you buy a cable like this :
http://www.rightent.com/images/CAB00058.jpg
you just plug it in the headphones 3.5 jack using that little optical to 3.5 jack and ..there it is RED LIGHT..I plugged in my Logitech 75450 second optical input and works perfectly fine
I'm about to find a way to get Dolby Digital Live and DTS connect to work with this output . Need to mess with some modified drivers :Savalance likes this. -

Which jack is the optical jack on the GT72, I see headphone, mic, and audio in/out (can't tell which is which) from front to back
Would this work:
http://www.amazon.com/C2G-27016-Velocity-Toslink-Optical/dp/B0002JFN1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1423424269&sr=8-1&keywords=3.5mm to optical#customerReviews
or this
http://www.amazon.com/KabelDirekt-T...=1423424853&sr=8-20&keywords=3.5mm+to+optical
I like the second one as it is a little shorter and cheaper. I don't need a long cable.
I have a headset that uses an optical line (for best sound) and was wondering. The optical part is the same as what is on my receiver, but the part that plugs into the computer is what I want to make sure of.
Thanks!dvojinov likes this. -
I'm happy to report I was able to enable DOLBY DIGITAL LIVE and DTS Connect on msi GT72 2QE Dominator pro powered by Realtek on board sound ALC892.
AMAZING thing you can switch from DTS connect to Dolby Digital Live on flay by selecting which one you want to use ..absolutely MAGNIFICENT . Looks like my SB Omni 5.1 got hard competition
I'm using DIGITAL out from the combined Headphone/DIGITAL 3.5 Optical port ..ofc you need a special cable or 3.5 to Optical ADAPTER I'm using BELKIN Digital optical cable + Adapter http://www.rightent.com/images/CAB00058.jpg like this one . It is connected via Logitech 5450 Surround Speaker system ..sound is absolutely amazing .Last edited: Feb 8, 2015 -
If you want the best out of your on board Realtek card follow this tutorial :
The first port is combined HEADPHONES/DIGITAL OPTICAL ..it doesn't light if you look inside , once you plug in this special 3.5 it will activate the LASER ..don't force to much in ..be gentle . As combined port it host traditional 3.5 audio jack and TOS ...amazing !dragonwolf8504 likes this. -
Here is how it looks like
Warning: after this Creative Cinema 2 doesn't work , for me it doesn't matter DTS Interactive is far superior to everything else , listening @ 48Khz/24 bit has a real advantage over the CL software solution .
However you still can benefit with this Digital out even if you want to keep the normal drivers and Cinema 2 , it works fine ..BlueRays and other media will be correctly mapped according to the audio stream ether DTS or Dolby ..however you wont be able to listen to music on your 5.1 and have it mapped through all speakers
.With DTS Interactive or Dolby Digital Live everything will be played surround ..I guess it is matter of taste and what someone likes more .
DTS-I will always play 48/24
DDL will always play 48/16Last edited: Feb 8, 2015 -
I was cheap when I ordered my laptop and elected for a DVD burner, but now I would like to upgrade to a Blu-Ray burner... how difficult is it to swap out one for the other? And, what model is recommended?
-
anyone knows what is the difference between dominator pro gt72 and the dragon edition?
-
I prefer membrane keyboard over mechanical keyboard. It feels clunky because the keys are too high and has to be pressed down too much. My fingers doesn't feel comfortable on it and my fingers get strained. The steelseries laptop are really good for me in this case and overall i'm really happy with it during long sessions of gaming.
The only complaint that I have is the high response time of the screen. I have to overclock the monitor to 90hz to ease the lag abit and lower the settings to maintain 90fps. Very noticeable in BF and quake and frame. On standard 60hz, the frames doesn't feel smooth at all and has huge impact on my aim as well for the input. For people that play fast games and need low input lag, TN would be not so bad at all and preferable.
Be careful though with 4720hq version, in EU some countries have the IPS screen with 4710HQ like the sku with NL. No vendors list here if they have IPS or TN and theres was no way for me to find out either if they did. The shops have no clue how to check it and the msi service had no idea either.
All bloatware can be removed except Norton Anti Theft. When uninstalling it asks you for an e-mail to remove it. I did register on norton's site but doesn't seem to work as it needs the mail that it got registered with...
Theres only one problem I came across. When I play BF4 or BF4 hardline, my cpu throttles to 2.0/1.6. The temperature is around 68C and in Intel XTU the cpu only throttles to 3.10
You can see it on the video here.
I have another question maybe some one can answer.
The new SKU's with 4720HQ here in The Netherlands have only 4GB Vram "priced the same'. It seems that the US version with 4720HQ doesn't have the 4GB vram or i'm wrong. I'm curious if this sku really have 4GB vram or any sku that have reported to have 4GB vram. I'm also curious if the 4GB version has the gpu soldered to the motherboard as I have seen no 980m mxm card for sale with 4gb.Last edited: Feb 9, 2015 -
Hi fellow owners of the GT72 980m beast. I bought this machine about 2 months back and wound up with a 4710 CPU and TN panel which I don't really have much issues with. It's definitely a very amazing machine until the fans hit 3600RPM. Due to the fact that I use open back headphones, the sound gets to me a lot. Just wondering if anyone has any remedy to this? Like stopping the fans from hitting 3600RPM when gaming.
Another question I have is that if anyone knows if DSR is supported for the 980m? I have searched on Nvidia official site but only the 965m is a supported mobile GPU with DSR but some review sites are claiming 980m comes with DSR which lets you squeeze a 1440p into a 1080p display resoultion. I would really like to try downsampling games and compare the results with anti-aliasing visually.
Also, I would like to thank all those veterans here sharing all their knowledge. Thank you. -
Hi,
you can switch to "comfort" mode (or even green mode) in the MSI Gaming Center to lower the temperatures and thus, the fans' speed ; but keep in mind you'll lose performance too, about 6 - 8 FPS between Sport mode and Comfort mode.
DSR is currently not supported by mobile GPUs, I read somewhere that it could be enabled by modding the driver but for now, it's just a rumor.halnala likes this. -

Hello MSI users.
Anyone here who have MSI gt72 with Asus swift rogue monitor? I have issues togheter with this setup i can get g-sync and 144hz but my screen goes black sometimes and get blurry after awhile of gaming. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Sounds like a cable issue, the 980M has no issues with the ASUS ROG display. Be aware 1440p at 144hz requires more bandwidth than 4k 60hz so the cable has to be good.
-
Well i got info that my laptop dont support g-sync can this be the problem? When i turné of g-sync my problem is gone?
-
Just a Warning and some temporary fix : New Nvidia Drivers 347.52 causes Nvidia Experience to crash I was able somehow to get in the application preferences TAB and there unchecked all UPDATE boxes . Both versions 2.2.2 and 2.2.3 beta crashing the same . Even then you have to avoid DRIVER TAB at all cost once you open that TAB it will crash the app regardless.
-
LOL ! I was wondering what was happening with Geforce Experience ! And you confirmed the bug I have... HOW THE HELL can Nvidia screw up like this ?
I was on the driver tab and managed thanks to you to go to the Game tab, thanks for the tip I thought my install was ****ed up...
Congratulation Nvidia, a crash caused by a driver update NOTIFICATION ! -

It's pretty tough to test and predict issues for every single hardware configuration out there for even a simple software update like that. Nvidia is pretty quick to fix issues though.

Hey guys did you overclocked you display? Is that dangerous? 70Hz is safe?
-
I overclocked mine to 90Hz without problem ; the display crashes at 100Hz
(I wouldn't recommend keeping it 24/7 at max frequency though, i'm not sure about the risks) -

edit: is there a way to unlock overclocking with the new drivers?
edit 2: can i remove the tdp limit using throttlestop so i can overclock my 4720?Last edited: Feb 10, 2015 -
My also overclocks to 90hz. The g-sync driver from gamenab allows overclock to 100hz. Are you sure yours is an IPS? Did you check with hwinfo to be sure? I keep my screen on 90hz 24/7 because the response time is too large to play games properly.
I think theres no way to unlock the tdp limit. I did it on intel xtu and still it would return to 3.1ghz on stress test. And also theres currently no way to overclock on the new drivers. -

Every panel will clock differently just like GPUs so variances in what can be achieved are to be expected.
-
Who ever experienced issue with NGE it has been fixed . NO additional download or reinstall required it was some missmach data that NGE was trying to pick up which wasn't in line with the new issued driver which resulted by crashing the app .
-
I'm trying to upgrade my TN panel to IPS so would really help to get the right panel, thanks. -
I've seen people with the same ips screen on this thread here. -

It will follow a bell curve as to what they can reach and 75hz is quite common.

The wireless lan driver will be updated to v11.0.0.493 in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Tech Preview.
The E2200 Lan driver seems to remain the same at v8.1.0.23
If you encounter issues with the uninstalling or installing of Killer drivers and software try using the KillerCleaner 64bit app to rid your system of the previous versions of the Killer Suites.

If that doesn't work try a good uninstaller program like Total Uninstall.

Thanks but before installing the new version I just wanted the changelog : i.e. what bugs were fixed, what feature were added... I dont have issues so far.
