I'd take the Asus out of the equation, it has horrid speakers.

Between the AW and MSI, do you want a Blu-ray player? Because the AW has no ODD at all.

Hello, I just registered to let you know that I have asked in other spanish forum (elotrolado) and MSI Spain told me that model GT72 2QE only comes with CHI MEI panel here in Spain, I guess it should be the same for GT72 2QD...?

Well they have the same exact IPS, both have great speakers, MSI has best keyboard.

Honestly, I would go with the MSI, since it doesn't have Optimus, which the AW does. Not having Optimus allows you to do things like downsampling and overclocking your LCD. I was in the same predicament as you, and that plus the BR drive helped sway me to MSI.

But, for you, it may come down to which one you think looks nicer.

No offense (NoahPhense) to your hard work. But on my GT72, same screen specs, I used the other link you sent (the one pasted above).

So far, best colors for me. Three items mean a lot to me when calibrating. White, Yellow, and TRUE dead black.

These are two images, I used to test my preferences.

Download them in full res to test.

Hope it helps someone with a GT72.

I cannot tell which it is for, or which one it was created on, but it's worth trying out -- it's not too cold and not too warm. I have a TN panel.

Have a query for GTX 980M owners.

How are your NVidia drivers updating?

I have a clevo GTX 980M which I installed in my GT70, (with bios flashes) and the last driver I can get to function properly was the 347.88. Am wondering if there is perhaps a driver issue affecting the GTX 980Ms in general, other than the problem lying with my dodgy setup.

NVIDIA GeForce Experience handles all my video drivers. I'm running 350.12.

As for system Bios. I updated it once. I DO NOT use the MSI Updater app for anything. I do go to the (exact-submodel) GT72 page @ MSI and manually check all items -- then manually update all items.

    Running as advertised!

    *edit

For fun I just checked video drivers. There's been an update as of today. Installing 352.86 as I type this..

I'm updating to and running the latest driver, with no installation or gaming issues, ever.

That's not an issue the GT72 is having with a native MSI 980m.

Maybe I'm reading something wrong or not reading it at all. But what exactly is the problem with your setup on the GT70? PS -- you should open a NEW thread. As this appears to be a lounge for the GT72.

I'm running it on High, so it stays at 60fps. Ulttra settings doesn't look that much better and 60fps means a lot more to me.

Yeah, GT72, it can hold 4x M.2 SSD and two mechanicals. http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT72-2QE-Dominator-Pro.html#hero-overview

I too struggled between two final laptops. The same two that you are looking over.

I guess the M.2's pushed me over the edge with their hardware Raid. M.2 is not a normal SSD, its a stick. AW does not have that technology.

To quote from the link above: "Super RAID 3, an MSI exclusive technology, enables disk read/write speeds of 1600MB/s and above with 4x M.2 SSDs in RAID0. Super RAID 3 pushes both performance as well as storage capacity to the limit."

Well Gents...I just came home with my own MSI GT72 2QE and all I went for was a Laptop bag. Been eyeing a new Laptop for a while and contemplating 2 others like most of everyone here and this one won and she is beautiful! So many questions to ask, but let me know attempt to know what I am doing and try updating what I can. Meanwhile I will go back to page 1 and catch myself up on some of conversations you guys have had. Is there anything I should do or should know before I start setting this up how I want it?

However in case you have problems with OC :
Today we released a new Hotfix driver that addresses the following issue:

Fixes a regression that prevented overclocking the GPU on some GeForce Notebooks

    It can be accessed here:

    http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3659

NOTE: This hotfix driver is only for GeForce Notebooks. There are no changes pertinent to desktop GPUs.

    Hi Everyone!

I am considering to purchase the gt72, however I can't afford the model with IPS screen. I am concerned about the quality of the TN. Is it dramatically different or will I notice it? Would it be possible to upgrade the screen in the future? I saw that replacement TN screens for this series aren't expensive, but would the IPS variant work in those models?

It's really only the screen issue holding me back from purchasing at this point.

Yes the viewing angles on the TN are not as good (because that's what TN panels are like) but otherwise it's a decent TN panel and yes you should be able to upgrade to an IPS display in the future by swapping the panel.

Hello sexy people of the internet! I'm now officially an owner of a MSI GT72 with a 4gb 980m card and 16 gigs of ram. She's huge but beautiful... Everything is SO FAST! This is the first laptop I owned after getting a macbook air in 2011 and there's no way in hell I'm going back! Thanks for the answers in this forum... They helped me out a lot by reading them.

Just one question... I have a performance setting in SCM, msi gaming center (the so called "shift" feature) and a built in windows power management program called "gaming" which looking at the advanced settings should be faster than high performance? Shift is only usable when on AC power and SCM forces in eco mode or something because it sometimes changes. What do I set each of these to? I haven't seen anyone write about SCM.

Any specific issues one needs to know about before purchasing this beast? A bit torn between this one and the GT80 titan-047. How good do these fare when compared to the Asus G751JY and the Alienware 17 2015 models.

    Hello!
Dear users, I am new here and I have GT72 with 980M for about one month now. Honestly, it's a good laptop, but still there is a lot to improve in next revision (I moved from XPS L502x).

I have a question regarding the 2nd HDD bay (the one without dedicated onboard socket). I thought maybe there is a way of having 2 HDDs without sacrificing the M.2 SSD RAID function. My idea is to use some kind of SATA splitter (both for power and data - Fig.1.) and then connecting two drives to one onboard SATA socket (Fig.2).
Does that kind of cables even exist? Could it work? Could the socket have enough power to run two disks? And how they could be functioning (as a one logical drive? Or two separate?).

    Fig. 1.

There should be cables and adapters for virtually most ports specially popular, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you really need a second 2.5 drive, consider removing the optical drive first, and use that as external.

From what I have seen MSI cherry picked chips in order to auto-undervolt.

67.0% :-( Mine is lower and it seems that all the other scores from other programs are lower compared to others who have posted here. I wonder why that is.

Another thing that bothers me....its a small thing, but still...does any else have a mouse that after sitting for a little go to use it and see the busy icon? It doesnt slow the mouse or keep it from performing, but its there....it does bother me in an OCD kinda way.
