Would a GT72 be better than a GS30 wig gaming dock and a 290X on the dock?

Ordered GT72 2QE (Dominator Pro)-682UK from Amazon. Scan were my preferred choice as local to them but when I asked them to price match (£100 difference) I got some lecture about Amazon not paying tax. I have pointed out other high street companies also had for the same price as Amazon & therefore not Amazon under pricing but Scan over pricing. I tried to help my local company but some nerd not understanding & lecturing has cost them my business.

This was all after the sales rep (who will be having his fag, subway & bottle of coke about now) had told me the price I quoted was wrong despite me including links which he had obvious problems using.

Anyway, feel from what I've researched it should be a good purchase.

Funny you should say that, I've had exactly the same conversation with Scan... They wouldn't budge on price, how can they even dream about selling their stock?

I've sent them another email & got an apology.

To make it worse they accept Amazon Pay! Very short sighted.

I've sent a final response detailing my disgust. We do not price match would have sufficed in the first reply.

Better in what sense? The GS30 would require external monitor etc. The 290x is faster than 980m but they are close in performance.

It seems it would be a hassle to go for the GS30 only to have relatively the same performance of the GT72. Unless you plan to slap in a higher end card to the GS30, like a 980Ti, or a Fury.

Additionally, the GT72 will have that same performance anywhere, while the GS30 will be significantly slower when away from dock. I travel just enough to make this a problem, as I want full performance wherever I might be.

On the flip side, the GS30 will be significantly easier to travel with (assuming you don't bring the dock).

My idea is that the GT72 is limited to the 980M and when that won't no longer run AAA games at reasonable settings, the whole laptop will have to be sold at a great loss and a new one purchased at a big price.

If I get the GS30 with the 290X in the future I can get a 980ti with a price drop or such and the laptop will still run great.

    Thoughts?

Also, does the GT72 with official GSync and IPS panel overclock to 100hz like the Asus G751JY?

Heh, the GT72 can still be upgraded for a new generation or two, I forgot :) It has "official" support, but I definitely understand what you are trying to say.

Just keep in mind, as be77solo said as well as many owners from both, gaming on the GS30 means desktop type of experience, so it is a very different product niche. You have potentially higher graphics performance, specially years down the road, but at the cost of mobile gaming performance :)

I love the idea of a GS30, and if it werent because I absolutely love the Titan, I would have gotten one instead. But it will be up to you if you want mobile gaming power, or desktop graphics level and experience with a mobile ultrabook :)

YES! Just got my GT72 with G-Sync :)))))

    I have a few questions:
Should I buy a screen protector for it? If so, which screen protector do you recommand?
Should I clean the dust in the speaker often? If so, how?

Also, what cooling pad do you guys recommend?

    Thank you guys!

    Congratulations man! :D

And calm down :) you don't need a screen protector, and try to clean your laptop at least once every two months, to remove dust build up :)

As for cooling pad, I like the cooler master U3. I have the U2 for my Gt60 and U3 for my titan :)

Only get a screen protector if you are prone to scratching displays, you should clean the system every few months all over.

I suggest propping the back of the machine up by the height a plastic bottle cap to improve airflow.

Still waiting on mine to arrive, all my other laptops are at my house so this will be the first laptop I have used in a little over a month at this point, hopefully getting it within the next week or so. If you plan on using this on your lap (which I do the majority of the time the cooling pad that I use is the Targus pad that you can use on your lap.

It's always best to really get inside of the fans you need to open it up. Luckily with the gt72 they made this easily accessible intentionally and I would say depending on your environment that you really only need to do it twice a year at most.

From what I can see (I don't have the machine yet, the speaker holes are rather large and compressed air or one of those vacuums that blows air should work fine.

It's always better to use compressed air to clean it.
Do not take it apart because sometimes things become broken in the process, like plastic clips, etc.

Hey guys im gonna buy a new kit of ram for my gt72.
Actually my configuration has a single 8 gb stick hynix cas 11, i wanna buy a 16 gb of hyperx cas 9.

The system will force the new kit to cas11 (and i really dont like that), but, will the system use the dual channel on the 2 outer socket (the ones accessible without removing the mobo) ?
If i dont want to have problem and going for use only the new kit, the only way to remove the old stick is by removing all the motherboard or maybe with a lot of patient i can reach the inside socket by the gap left from the removed fan?

Probably this is a newbie question but this is my first laptop...

    Thank you!

You will need to fully populate one side before the other to gain dual channel.
Best to remove the fan before you can remove the existing memory modules otherwise you can potentially damaging the heat pipe.

Of course i will remove fan and heatpipe, the question is, is it possible (by only using the fingers) to reach the inner socket and remove the old stick from there?

It's doable, but because the edge of module will be blocked therefore it will require tremendous efforts to complete the removal.

Damn, probably i will stick with this not optimal configuration for awhile, at least untill i will buy another kit (same hyperx) and going to disassemble the mobo and replace even the inside part.

    Thank you!

    But at what cost?
With the prices of MXM gpus, might as well sell the whole laptop and buy a new one with better GPU. But also cpu, memory, storage...

    I'm tempted by the GT72 2QD (GTX 970M 17.3" IPS with G-SYNC).

Anybody got any feedback on surface temps? Namely the keyboard area. How is it under load vs idle? Anybody have an IR thermometer to test it with?

It's true that new MXM GPUs are expensive (the 970M runs around $600-$700 CAD here). However, you can usually sell your old MXM GPU for about half of that, so it isn't THAT expensive.

Though I tend to agree that it isn't a much better deal (financially) than just selling your old laptop and buying a brand new one. For a few hundred extra dollars, you get a brand new machine.

What bluray internal drive is recommended by MSI for the GT72 2QE-684UK?

Need the eject button to still work when I swap the bezel from the DVD drive.

    There you go

Playing the most demanding game and having a temp of 75 celsius the wasd zone is barely warm/not noticeable.
The very warm part is the speaker zone, far from the hands.

Im speaking about mine gt72 with 980m and i7 4720hq (both overclocked), 970m version is more cool ofc.

    Just picked up the GT72 2QD Dominator (G-SYNC IPS, GTX 970M, i7-5700HQ).

Overall my first impressions are pretty good. Not too heavy, decent styling, feels solid, really nice screen. Stays cool and quiet, even when gaming. Good stuff.

    But...

There's a "void if removed" warranty sticker preventing me from opening it up and adding my own RAM/SSD. WTF?

Also, the worst keyboard I've used in recent memory. Seriously, what was Steelseries thinking? Moving the windows key to the right? Super cramped keyboard that makes it feel like you're typing on a cramped 14" ultrabook rather than a spacious 17.3" machine? Flex??

Nice machine, but the warranty sticker and lousy keyboard means I'll probably return it. Shame, because the price, specs and screen are all very good.

Oh man... Now I have a big problem.
When I play games like cs go and lol, pings jumps from 30 to 300 constantly...
I tried to delete the Killer Network manager and did a clean installation of only the driver
I also tried to add "scanonlyasociated" into regedit.

But I still have this problem

Try LAN if you can, and verify if it's just WLAN only, or both.
If it's WLAN, then there are settings in the router you can adjust.

Ramzay, it depends how long you wait to exit one laptop and start a new one.

My G750JH is still a great laptop, with excellent performance, but with all the new 970m/980m laptops, the sell-able value has dropped way below recovery for a new laptop.

My G750JH sold for $1000, and cost $2600 20 months ago. If I could have spent $800 to add a 980m, I would have.

Instead I am getting a new laptop, an MSI GT80 that has 2 replaceable MXM cards, so 2x the cost when it comes time to upgrade the GPU's, but it will be worth it. Instead of spending $4000 on a new SLI laptop, it will only be $1600 :)

And, MSI has promised 2 generations of upgrades.

I think upgradable GPU's are awesome!

I only wish someone would come out with a modularized MXM-like upgrade for the HQ CPU's, then we would have long term support for all the goodies... maybe support upgrading Screens, and even Motherboards too.

The CPU does tend to be less important over several generations.

Indeed. A 3-4 year old CPU can run most games just fine. Its the GPUs that degrade quickly in terms of usefulness.

I'm also having issues with the wireless connection. When playing online games (such as Heroes of the storm) I get constant lag. I mean constant. Stuttering every few seconds, makes the game unplayable.

Can you try the latest driver package below? Download it first, then uninstall the package completely, reboot the PC before you install the new package.
