Remember that only the m.2 are SATA III (or the 2.5" bay that replaces them if you don't have the adapter). The rest are SATA II. The 850 evo m.2 is very good.

That blank bay is where the SATA III 2.5" goes when there is no M.2 adapter.

Jamesgz I am having lag spikes too since the upgrade to new drivers. I tried to ping my router in and I am geting results like : all time 1ms and then after couple of pings it goes 300-400 and then again drops to 1ms. But I noticed its only with 1.1.53.1484 drivers. Try any older ones. It works for me

Any drive placed in a SATA II slot (the 2nd bay and ODD) will run at SATA II speeds at the fastest yes.

Hello all. I'm new these forums and this thread. What a great read btw. Read it in its entirety . I'm sure I'll be here often lol. But I do have a small issue. I researched MSI and ASUS for my new gaming laptop purchase and decided on MSI. Narrowed that down to a GT72 Dominator Pro 445. After researching multiple models and reading about Gsync I thought all the models had Gsync and I ordered my 445 last night and got next day shipping so anytime now a delivery person will be knocking on my door. After admiring my purchase and patting myself on the back and wiping away my drooling mouth I realized my model doesnt have Gsync. Ugh. The other model i was researching the GT72 Dominator Pro G 1423 does however have Gsync. The 445 uses a 4980HQ and the 1423 uses the 5700HQ. I think the 445 is a better deal and maybe even have a slight edge over the 1423 minus the Gsync. The 445 has 32GB ram and Blue Ray burner also.
So my issue is which is better in your opinion? Im new to laptop gaming and MSI. Im wondering should I even open my package and switching to the 1423. No teal price difference atm. Or maybe Im missing something from one of the other models. Some advice or pointers I may have missed in my research would be GREATLY appreciated. The 445 link is
    http://us.msi.com/product/nb/GT72-Dominator-Pro-GTX-980M/#hero-specification&sku_no=354

    The link for 1423 is
    http://us.msi.com/product/notebook/GT72-Dominator-Pro-G-GTX-980M.html#hero-specification&sku_no=436

I will check back often for advice and comments often today. Sorry so large of a post. Thx

4980HQ might have slight edge on single/low thread jobs because of the higher clocks. But overall they are quite similar performers.

Ya. But my main concern is one has Gsync feature where as the other doesnt. Do you think I should go with 1423 uses eDP for Gsync or 445 with the Blue ray, higher clock. Also what are your thoughts on these models compared to the others. The other a bit higher end just seemed overkill for price vs benefit.

Hey guys love you all I recently just got my gt72 dominator pro with g-sync gtx 980m, core i7 5700 hq with 24 gigs ram. I was wondering how strong is the usb ports cause I feel like its a bit tough for me to insert my flash drives and pull them out most of the time and I feel like it is going to break with the way I am trying to insert the usb and eject them can somone tell me how durable they are?

also I would like to know if the speaker grilles at the top are resistant to minor liquids like cleaning liquid and water? Would it be okay to use cleaning liquid/water when cleaning near the speakers? There seems to be 2 layers of speaker grilles the very top black plastic grilles with slightly larger holes and the red grilles underneath with micro holes protecting the speaker drivers from dust and other objects. From the looks of it msi did look like they did take protection into consideration when designing it but would it be okay to use liquid water sprays to clean the keyboard and where the speakers are located?

Has anybody done a clean install of Windows 10. I've upgraded and activated but wondered if I do a clean install this will remove the chance of conflicts. But if I do the clean install what do I do about drivers, will they ALL just auto install?

Do you need to update any drivers with a refresh?

What's the difference between refresh, reset and clean install.

You can't do clean install of Win10 because it will not activate.
The only way you can get a functional Win10 is by upgrading an existing OS.

Congrats on your purchase, don't forget to register your product within 30 days of your purchase to receive ADC benefit (US/Canada). :)
The USB ports are strong enough to handle reasonable use and they hardly break unless you have something strong which can cause your USB device to break itself.

    Any suggestions?

You can do clean install if you already upgraded windows from previous version, such as 7 or 8.1.
I've done it. First I upgraded from windows 8.1. And then formated hard drive and done clean install of windows 10 from the flash drive. It automatically activated when I connected to the internet. While setup i skipped cd-key inqury.

Your windows key is written in bios.
You can download any program that show your key, then download windows 8 setup and use that key to install it.
And then you can upgrade to windows 10.

Not sure what you mean. It doesn't show windows 8.1?
Or do you mean get windows 8.1 & use the key from my Bios in it.
A few steps would be good.

    1. Download http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html#DownloadLinks
    2. Run it
    3. Look at Windows (BIOS OEM Key)
    4. Copy it
    5. Download windows installer here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only
    6. Use your windows product key from bios
    7. Install

And after, if you want windows 10, download installer from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Click upgrade and after install you'll have activated windows 10.

Then you can create bootable usb stick with windows 10 by that tool. And use it to clean install. Windows will be activated automatically after connecting to internet.

Hey guys! The new Nvidia Driver for windows 10 has been released (version 353.62) and on the website it states that notebooks with the hybrid power ability are not supported. Will updating to this driver version break hybrid power?

That's the old hybrid power (sort of SLI), pre optimus and has nothing to do with hybrid power from battery.

Order recovery discs from MSI then perform upgrade from there.
If you are able to do a clean install then make sure the OS is activated by the key in the BIOS.

can I ask you something this might sound stupid but I was eating an orange and when i chomped on the the orange the orange juiced sprayed onto my keyboard and speakers not alot of juice. my speakers and keyboard still work fine. Should I be worried as I didn't turn off my computer when this happened, I continued to use it as I thought its not alot of water, I just went and got paper and wiped it off. Should I be worried?

If there weren't a lot then they were probably only on the surface side and did not get under. If anything in the system is damaged because of moisture then MSI will not cover any repair work as under warranty repair but out of warranty repair.
Do not attempt to use hair dryer to dry the liquid as the hot air can melt the keyboard keys, unless your hair dryer can blow cool air.

    Morning

I have a question regarding the Windows 10 upgrade process on the MSI GT 72 Dominator 970m (link here)

My laptop came preloaded with Windows 8.1. I deleted and reloaded that as soon as I got the laptop, as their was too much bloatware installed. Since that point, I have always been able to install Windows 8.1 and the product key in the BIOS is picked up no problem, and windows installs and activated no issues.

With the release of Windows 10, I ran all my Windows updates, and the UPGRADE went smoothly. I was sitting with Windows 10, with all my settings and programs, activated. I ran the RESET feature in Windows 10, and it gave me a clean install, also activated.

I read, and was told, that during the UPGRADE process Microsoft attach your old product license to the new Windows 10 product license. I was told that I had to do the UPGRADE first, only then I would be able to do a CLEAN install. (format drive, install off external Media (ISO). Since I had done the upgrade successfully, I went ahead with the CLEAN install.

It will NOT activate. I have tried everything. According to the error message, the key is blocked.

Skipping entering the product key (upon install)
Entering the product key (upon install)
Leaving Windows 10 overnight to activate on its own (due to activation server overload)
Running manual CMD command to activate
Tried lifting the product key from my activated Windows 10 (from my previous UPGRADE) - but this was a generic key, didn't work
Tried lifting the product key from my activated Windows 8.1 (my normal install) - this key says blocked, didn't work

Short of contacting MSI, does anyone have any ideas? I see other people on the internet having issues with OEM keys for a CLEAN install as well.

    Thank you

    Hi,
I did the upgrade to windows 10 this week end on my newly GT72 2QE and it worked like a charm. Installation was done in less than 15min, no problem at all and my system is much stable now (I had daily hardware and software failures with win 8.1).
So far so good but I do have a question, I have noticed that MSI-US website is proposing all drivers for Win10, are there the one that I have by default with my upgrade or should I installed them?

Also I have noticed a new bios for the 2QE, is it very important to install this bios update or if everythink is running good I can pass on this one?
    Thanks,

Do I need to install both these sets of drivers or are the Bluetooth drivers included in the sweet.

Are there any other new drivers for the Haswell version of the GT72?

My Windows 10 auto activated. No doom and gloom.

The killer drivers keep dropping out, how do I roll back to the previous version I had installed?

Any new other Windows 10 drivers released by MSI?

    Hi,

I purchased my GT72-QD with Broadwell close before the Windows 10 launch and did now the upgrade to Windows 10.
    I have two questions:

    1. It is necessary to upgrade the drivers and utilities when there are no problems?
    2. It is possible to create a recovery media using Burn Recovery with the upgraded Windows 10?

    Regards

I bought a base version with just a 1TB HDD included. Does it come with the adapter to connect a SSD in the main SATAIII bay? Or will I need to order one of those separately?

You should have everything to connect the second drive.

Thinking about combo-ing a MSI GT72 Dominator Pro G model laptop and a Acer XB270HU monitor. Can the laptop support it at max resolution, 144 refresh rate and G-Sync?
