I was under the impression that MSI stop offering IPS displays on GT72 in their Broadwell refresh. They are using HD eDP wide view angle displays.

The link you provided indeed does not list IPS specifically. We were told all the G-Sync models (GT72 Dominator/Pro) were IPS though. We will have to contact MSI for clarification.

    @IBP-Andy @Hutsady@XoticPC

I personally owned the newer GT72 model with the Broadwell i7 and G-SYNC. It was indeed an IPS panel, the same LG you find in almost all 17.3" laptops with an IPS panel.

I'm pretty sure most 15" Ghost/Stealth models come with an IPS panel. Not sure about the 17" Stealth/Ghost.

Thanks for the insight, curious why MSI didn't list that on their spec sheet.

Okay so I just got a response from MSI Rep, they are IPS panels. The spec sheet must have been wrong or not updated. Capture.PNG

I bought an MSI gt72 haswell (4710hq) in occasion. I hear a lot about IPS and non IPS screen here.
I thought I have a TN chin mei but actually, it's a lg Philips screen TN...
Conclusion : there is IPS panel on some "old" official MSI gt72!

If I get the optical drive bay caddy that mounts a 2.5" hard drive, what does it look like from outside? Does it still look like it has an optical drive?

Anyone have pictures of this? Thanks.

Yes, and you can also replace the bezel if it's compatible.

What I'm really asking I guess is:

If I replace the optical drive with the 2.5" drive caddy that fits in the optical drive bay, is there a blank bezel that fits on the front of that caddy so it blends in with the rest of the GT72's side / edge that the optical drive was in.

Also, does anyone have pictures of what that 2.5" drive caddy looks like once in place of the optical drive?

Check under Control Panel and reveal all items, then verify whether Realtek HD Audio manager exists or not.

I asked MSI support for the realtek icon as well as the missing Enhancements tab on the speakers properties (can't enable loudness equalization).

    Reply from MSI:

    Dear *******,
Please kindly be informed that new audio driver doesn't have Realtek HD Audio Manager icon in task manager because vendor remove this icon in newer audio driver.About the audio problem you mentioned, you can do some setting in Nahimic control panel.
    Thank you!

    Best Regards,
    MSI Notebook Technical Application Department

Seems weird to me that I have driver 7534 from the MSI website and there's no icon, and my friend on his GS70 has 7535 (newer) and he still has the icon...

I'm not entirely sure they know what they're talking about.

I'm trying to do a factory reset on this thing but when I go to f3 at boot up and go advanced and reset, I select Windows 10 but then it says to insert Windows disk etc. Is there not a recovery partition that I can factory reset from? The only disk I got when I bought the laptop was the utilities and drivers disk. How do reset this thing?

Edit: booting into Windows 10 is taking way too long. So obviously something is borked. Not even sure I can recovery files at this point. Tried to do the reset from within Windows and it's not happening. Lost wireless. Basically nothing really working. Should I try rolling back to 8.1 and doing a reset from within Windows 8 (if it'll even roll back to 8 at this point).

The recovery console with have the original OS on it. Did your computer come with 8.1 or 10 preinstalled? If 8.1 then you need to select that option. Once that has been done, then you can upgrade to 10 again if you'd like.

Is the Camera app working for you guys in Windows 10?

It just shows black for me, even though the camera led lights up.

Camera works fine in Skype for example.

SOLUTION: To answer my own question, it was ShadowPlay that was causing this issue. If I turn it off the app works normally.

Afternoon, guys. Had a quick question, as I thought that here would be a good place to ask. I'm a more recent owner of the original GT72 2QD with the GTX 970m and the TN panel, from before the G models were released. Are there any options to obtaining an IPS screen for this model that I can take, maybe replacing the screen myself? Probably screwed in this respect, but I figured I'd ask.

Loving this monster, by the way. May not be the 980m but purrs like the kitten I've always wanted.

Newbie here: Just unboxed my MSI Dominator GT72 and got all programs, drivers, etc updated and as I knew when I layed out my 2 grand... I'm loving it!!

Now... Can you tech experts point me to conversations here that show me how to maximize my settings and included tools? Or add your own advice?

Usage: Website Design, Graphic Design, Gaming, 3 external monitors (Lenovo 24* IPS).

Really want to dive into everything but don't want to screw up anything if default settings are okay. Help appreciated!

Very good temps on the GT72. I haven't heard of any power issues either.

You can see temps during benchmarks in our video here Its a little older with a 4th Gen CPU, but 980M.

The process is similar as other models. First to dismount the lid, and bezels, then you can extract the existing screen, and replace it.

Did you update the BIOS/EC firmware? Because the newer versions no longer support SBC2. Also, you need to uninstall and delete the SBC2 folder manually, then reinstall it to allow it to function correctly, otherwise it would just crash.

Hi all, I recently purchased a gt72 with the 5700hq, 970m, an IPS screen and g-sync. Everything works perfect, except one thing... Few days ago, I switched off the g-sync from nvidia control panel to test its influence on game play, the problem is I can't switch it on afterwards. Everytime I tried to tick “enable g-sync" and apply, it always untick g-sync automatically... Does anyone encounters the same issue?

Have you gotten any insights as to their new models?

I was pretty much sold on the GT72, but the crummy/small keyboard and the fact you need to completely disassemble the laptop to do such a simple thing as access two of the RAM modules turned me off. It also cost MSI money, because I otherwise would've kept it.

If you have any pull with them at all, I'd highly advise that, instead of simply taking the keyboard from the 15" laptops and putting it on the 17" models, they do what Alienware does and develop a keyboard specifically designed for a 17" machine (like they did with the prior Dominator models). There is no excuse for the small size of the keys and the 3/4 num pad, not to mention all the wasted real estate on the chassis that could've been used for a full-sized keyboard with "normal" key placement (put the delete button where it's supposed to go, same with the Windows key). This is a 17" machine - give it a 17" keyboard. I know Clevo does the same thing - they just use the same keyboard for both their 15" and 17" machine. But just because Clevo does it, does not make it the right thing to do. Alienware does the right thing in this regard.

I would also look at their storage solution. Who uses SATAII these days? Besides ASUS. One of the 2.5" bays is pretty much wasted. A lot of people already have their own 2.5" SSDs, but can't really use them in this machine. M.2 drives are still more expensive. I'd suggest going the Clevo route - 2x2.5" SATAIII bays, and one or two M.2 connectors.

My 2 cents, in case anybody at MSI cares about making an additional sale.

Also, making the battery easier to remove would be quite helpful.

Seriously, just tell them to have a look at the layout of the Alienware 17 R1 (mid-2013). Just copy that.

We're really seeing the opposite of that from most manufacturers. More and more are having internal batteries.
But with really no reason to remove it besides a strait replacement, it makes sense.

Really no reason ?? What about having 2 batteries and switching when one runs out of power ? With the SSD it's just 30 seconds or less to shutdown, change battery and boot again...
