Anyone know any resellers with an extensive burn in? I'm looking at the GT72 but really don't want to deal with a lemon if I can take extra measures to save me a headache.

You should ask MSI via their support portal, through your registered laptop account to be certain, but I think "Implement windows firmware update AC check." means they are fixing a bug that has to do with the Firmware Update checking for AC Power before allowing the update from Windows.

Firmware update failures in Windows 8.1
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2909710

    "Windows Update power checks
Because your computer may require a certain level of battery power (for example 25 percent) to install firmware updates, Windows Update monitors your battery power level to prevent your computer from needlessly failing a firmware update during an interactive install."

The rest of the text is long, but reads quickly. They go on to say they check for Battery power even if you are plugged in - I assume that is because even if you are plugged in the AC power might fail during a BIOS flash (it's happened to me, fortunately I was on a UPS).

The wording of BIOS changes are often opaque, but this one seems clear, fix the AC power check when allowing a firmware update request through Windows interactive update.

If you do ask MSI, please let us know what they say :)

I 've asked several times , but I try again ...

Anyone know how remove the bezel of the panel ?

I would like to reduce the pressure of the panel screws to see if I can reduce bleeding in the upper right corner .

I am also on MSI GT72-2QE with 4th gen i7 32GB RAM and 8GB GTX980M but there seems to be an occasional stutter and dropped frames. Have lowered some of the settings to High but not much of a difference. Not sure what could be causing it. Anyone else experienced this?

Yeah, it´s probably your HDD APM function (Advanced Power Management). Had a similar problem with my GT70-2PE, searched around a bit and i eventually found out that disabling my HDD´s (It´s an HGST 1TB 7200rpm Mechanical HD) APM fixed this particular problem. It is known that in certain cases having APM enabled in your hard drive can cause occasional stutters. You could give it a try.

Do you have LPM (Link Power Management) enabled? It may not be the cause of it, but disabling it might be a good idea all the same.

And hmscott - your current Darth Vadar avatar is hilarious. :vbtongue:

If it's the situation with the HDD, it is caused by the HDD not because you are currently using it, but because it goes to sleep, and then wakes up, temporarily freezing the system making it seem like hiccups. This happened to my GT60, so I kept HWmonitor running all the time which prevented the HDD to sleep and the issue was "fixed".

But I haven't experienced that with my current titan, so maybe it depends on the hdd vendor plus settings.

Disabled Link Power Management and switched the HWMonitor on. That seems to have done the trick. Thanks for all the suggestions.

    Will also check APM.

I remember when I first realised my hard drives were spinning down when I first got Vista, it was funny as they were the loudest part of my system so it suddenly went dead quiet and I was just browsing off the cached data.

    Hi !
is it possible to put a GTX 980 in place of GTX 980m?
are mainboards of GT72s 6QE and 6QF the same?
official msi guy promises that there will be an upgrade to mxm gpu in models with 980m
    (at the end)
did he mean 980 (without m) or pascal? or is it not truth?

What makes you think they were not telling the truth? Seems a strange angle to approach it straight off.

Nothing has been tested exactly yet, but it seems to me there is no reason (with the right heatsinks) that any GT72 can't take any currently available card.

I believe you can upgrade with new coming future M cards like fore exmep GTX990M but not GTX980M to GTX980 as that M stands for Mobile design how in the name of god could you possible put in something big as a full GTX 980 ???

According to MSI, this swap is not possible since the main PCB is different.

    Hi,
I've been looking at buying this laptop for some time and the only thing I'm worried about is the screen:
If I were to buy the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro http://www.jimms.fi/fi/Product/Show...gb-2x128gb-ssd-1tb-hdd-windows-8-1-tarjousera with i7-4720HQ as CPU, would I receive the same "IPS" panel as is used in the G-Sync models of the GT72?

If anybody has the GT72 with the 4720HQ CPU how would you rate it against the Chin Mei panel found in the 4710HQ model?

No, you will not receive IPS if you buy GT72 with 4th gen processors.
Only GT72S (Skylake) with 6th gen processor may come with IPS, but please double check with your reseller directly for confirmation if the item description does not specify IPS and other features (eg: G-sync).

Do you know anything about the "wide-view-panel" in the 4720hq that should be better than the original Chin Mei panel found in the 4710hq?

If it's 4720HQ, then it's updated with IPS panel from LG Philips LP173WF4-SPF1, ID: LGD046.

Hi to all the Members. I had purchased the MSi gt72 2qe 210us last year & 3 days back accidently deleted the recovery partition. I didn't make a backup of the recovery. I now wanted to make a back to factory reset on it due some errors in the softwares installed. I don't know what to do. Is there a way that i can order a recovery disk from msi or any other way to download the msi recovery for windows 8.1 64bit. I did email the msi support service about my situation 2 days back but still no reply from them. Can any one suggest some remedy. Thanks in advance.

You two can drop the worry. You are dredging up info from before the desktop mobile 980 was released, while it was unknowingly called the 990m - and the rumors had it wrong - both name and form factor.

That 990m never existed - it was only a "name" used to talk about the rumored 980 desktop mobile that was finally released recently as MXM cards.

MSI is keeping their promise to provide MXM upgrades. IDK if the 980 desktop mobile will be an upgrade - it's not a "generation" upgrade it's a variation on the current generation.

MSI talked about providing "Pascal" upgrades in MXM format for the GT72/GT80, and I believe they will make that happen, just like they have with the current 980m/970m upgrades for previous models.

There's no cause for alarm or panic :)

My MSI GT72 2QE Dominator Pro-682UK came with 8GB of RAM, I want to upgrade to 16GB HyperX Impact. How much dis-assembly is required, and can someone link to a teardown video or article to do so? Cheers.

Be aware that if you mix ram then it will run at the speed of the slowest stick. The ram can be found under the keyboard and under the main hatch (2 slots each).

Search "GT72 teardown" in youtube for a complete walkthrough for the machine.

Afraid the only way to use G-Sync is to connect it to external G-Sync monitor.

I have just picked up A GT72s with 980m and G Sync. I'm having a couple of issues and just wondering if anyone else has had these.

The first is the WiFi is constantly disconnecting when under load i.e downloading. It just looses the internet and needs turning on/off and it works ok after that until it does it again.

The second is heat. Playing Assassins Creed the new one my 980m is hitting 85/86.c and the fan is becoming very noisy. The only way to keep it under 80.C is to use the boost button which makes it very loud.

Anyone else experienced these issues ?

The issue with my laptop switching to battery momentarily while plugged in to power has been getting worse... It happens way more often now and unfortunately the only solution I can see is hoping it's a problem with the AC adapter and not the laptop and ordering a new AC adapter... It costs about 100 euros which is too much money but I can't be left with no laptop as I need it for work. I contacted MSI and they said all they can do is inspect it and that would take about 2 weeks...

I wish there was a way I could just test this with another adapter somehow :(

I own Samsung evo 850 on sata port in my GT72 2QE. I know that it works in sata 2 and its power is very limited. Is there any way to connect it to sata 3 port? Or I have to buy m2 version of drive?

you could technically still use it by connecting a sata 3 cable instead of the m.2 bay to the sata 3 port, then you could store the ssd in the empty hard disk bay which is used for a second hard disk on lower end models, but empty on the ones that have ssds. Keep in mind that you won't be able to use the m.2 ssd(s) that came with your computer as it's currently in the m.2 slot.
