IPS or HVA were not mentioned in the listing therefore it may not have it.
It may have it because MSI starts using those panels on the same SKU but latter shipments.

unigine heaven on set extreme settings = 1103
gpu temp was stable at 62-63 C

Tried ultra quality, extreme tesselation 1980x1080 n got score of 843..

Saw a score of alienware w/ gtx970m same settings 848. So im guessing that my refurbished machine is fine??

That is very strange. Are you Sure that you now have Version 510? This Version only works on GT72 2QE.

My laptop going back for repairs again. Third time in less than two months...
Crashes when gpu is under heavy load.
Tried different drivers, win 8.1, win 10, factory image.
    No joy.

    This is getting silly.

I'd like to be able to use my laptop rather than sending it back for repairs every other week.

There are no difference about the quality, as far as I remember (last time I used the old cinema 2 was 6 or 7 months ago).
Main difference is about all the features you have with the sb3 (equaliser on top) that can give you a lot more room of improvements instead of the basic cinema 2.
And of course the possibility to have all the personal preset you need.
Actually I'm using it on win 10, they updated the software some months ago and now is fully compatible with Win 10.

Sb5 if I understood well is just an exclusive for the new alienware and clevo laptops, I tried to install and use it without success.
Yes I'm, checked twice inside the bios, version 510 instead of the new 512...
    And of course I have a gt72 2qe.

    Hi

I´m also still pretty happy with my GT72 (intel 4th Gen / 970M) and got a short question regarding GPU overclocking, is there any special thread for the GT72 Maxxwell´s ? I remember any kind of "special BIOS" for GPU (by donating little cash to the dev) but did not find thread anymore :(

    Regards, aVa

Perhaps it's just your battery, try doing an EC reset and see what happens.

EC reset otherwise entails that you remove/ disconnect the battery; since this model has a "non-removable" battery, keep in mind that doing a reset this way is a little involved.

Let us know what you find out.

Actually the tiny button I mentioned above does a battery remove without pulling out physically the cable as you can read here https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&s...HFYu3Eyuh9R0jNdWw&sig2=qUh9re3e_hquhpUIUVTsfA

Very Strange. I downgraded to Version 510 and do an EC-Reset by pressing the Botton and it works. At what RPM does your Fan's turn under heavy GPU Load without Cooler Booster?

Just reset windows 10 on my GT72 2QE Haswell with GTX 980m. Now many headaches. SCM doesn't work. No backlit keyboard. Boot is sloooooow.

What drivers do I need to reinstall and in what order? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Got SCM installed (with admin rights!!). Still no backlit kb even with steelseries driver installed.

Have you downloaded all the win10 drivers from msi website?
They also suggest what sequence to install them in.

If you can't get it working do a factory reset to win 8.1 and upgrade again from there.

    Good luck.

    ty for the reply,

is 4gb vram enough to get good fps at 4k or do i need 8?

msi does have an external gpu cradle i suppose to use with the 4k screen at home, and max out the 1080p with 4 when travelling.

    just answered my own q!!

You bought the wrong one if you wanted 4k/980m 8GB, return it / cancel order, and find the one you want, like this one:

    GT72S 6QE DOMINATOR PRO G (4k / 980m 8GB model)
    https://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GT72S-6QE-DOMINATOR-PRO-G.html#hero-specification

They don't list the model number, but under specs there is an option for 4k and 8gb:

Display - 17.3" UHD (3840x2160), IPS level panel, 100% Adobe RGB (Optional)
    Graphics - VRAM 8/ 4GB GDDR5

Call up Tesco and talk with a sales/service person and ask them to change your order to the correct model :)

BTW, you wouldn't want to replace the display to 4k on a 4GB VRAM model, and anyway it's probably physically impossible.

4GB VRAM isn't enough for driving a 4K monitor, internal or external, I have games using more than 4GB on 1080p already.

There is also a Tobii version with 4k/8GB:

    GT72S 6QE DOMINATOR PRO G tobii
    https://www.msi.com/product/notebook/GT72S-6QE-DOMINATOR-PRO-G-tobii.html#hero-specification

Same thing but with eye tracking tech... fun stuff :)
    http://www.tobii.com/

    Hands on: MSI GT72S G Tobii review (Eye's on Review?? ;) )

    cheers matey :)

im going to stick with that one as i hear even 8gb vram stutters @ 4k, esp with AAA titles like arkham knight, crysis 3 guzzles vram too! i will use it mobile with 1080p @ ultra, buy a big 4k screen and an external gpu to use with thunderbolt at home, a titan x will run 4k very nicely, i can live with 1080p when travelling (i travel a lot).

i think thats the sensible option, ultra 1080p mobile, use the money i would have spent on a 4k lappy screen & 8gb 980m to buy a refurbished titan x and refurbished 4k screen or tv ;D

I still recommend a 1080p screen internally, but I also recommend 8GB VRAM...

Maybe call Tesco and ask if they offer a GT72S with 8GB VRAM and 1080p screen, that's kinda the standard, I am suprised they have a 4GB VRAM GT72S, I thought that was only the GT72 non-S (lower spec) models.

Bollocks on the "stuttering with 8GB anyways" idea, it's way better than 4GB VRAM stuttering

thats why 4gb vram is more than enough for ultra @ 1080p, 8gb @ 4k is not, enjoy the stuttery 4k, also downsized to 2k or 1080p looks rubbish, i will enjoy my 1080p smooth and silky, and get external thunderbolt dock with desktop gpu and nice big 4k tv in 3D :)

why they put 4k screen without a gtx 980 is beyond me, even in sli in stutters, sli is being more unsuppoted in more and more titles.

    msi what are you thinking?!

I think they see "there´s a marketing need for 4k Display apart from gaming" which is not that wrong, and you can play FHD or 2k on the 4k display too, without getting punished that hard as (down)scaling from native 4k @ FHD should be okay (i hope, maybe some reviews will let us know). Is there already any kind of review regarding this?
