Makes no difference. I ran originally with no high performance and on green setting and got the same results.

Hmm weird. I assume you're on the latest drivers?

Ok, so to squeeze more from the system I overclocked the GTX980M to +135 core and +500 memclock.
Also overclocked CPU to the max on all cores using Intel ETU.
Now I get 5.9 points on the SteamVR performance tester. It is very close to VR Enabled, but still I'm curious if this score is in line with the machine specs. I really expected this MSI machine to be VR Enabled as this is the max GT72 specs you could get.
What settings to check to improve GPU and CPU performance? -
Xymox, check your power settings to make sure it's set to high performance and check your video drivers version.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 -
- Set Windows powerscheme to max performance
- Set nVidia setting powermanagement to max performance
- Overclocked CPU & GPU to default max
- Closed running apps
- Installed the latest GFX driver
The result is 5.9 (just a tick below the green range).
Now reading other results for MSI and other laptops having GTX980M, this result is fairly normal it seems.
Though some report no issues running VR on their specs, so probably this machine will be able also. -
Great! Let us know how it goes.

i tried running it
vr capable but not quite vr ready
so near yet so far
you think will be able to play smoothly on our gt72s 980m 8gb with more mature drivers or do you think it depends on the games
think il be getting the vive looks sweet -
Does anyone knows if the GT72S has some utility to prevent the battery from charging beyond to certain level ?
-
Set these 3d Global options, or set them for each game / app / benchmark in Programs Settings tab:
"Multi-display/Mixed GPU Acceleration" => "Single Display performance mode"
"Power Management Mode" => "Prefer Maximum Performance"
"Texture filtering Quality" => "High Performance"
What do you mean setting OC to default max? Are you using XTU for CPU OC and MSI Afterburner for GPU OC? GPU OC should be +135 +300 stable on a 980m.
And, uninstall MSI Gaming Center, it's partial OC isn't worth the effort, and can interfere with XTU/MSI AB settings.
Hopefully that will be enough to kick you into the greenLast edited: Mar 8, 2016 -
When you see the battery icon message say "plugged in not charging", and your battery level is under 100%, that is the charging firmware / software keeping your battery fresh.
Mine frequently goes as low as 93% and I do catch it occasionally at or near 100%.
You would be surprised how many people are upset that they can't force 100% charge, they want it at full level all the time so they can get the most time off AC possible when they want to go mobile.
MSI can't win, either the battery is too full, or it's not full enough.
"Hey, why isn't the laptop charging my battery right now??"
"It's at 94%"Last edited: Mar 8, 2016 -

This isn't exactly a laptop made for portability. The Sager you had before was a lot lighter than this.
Edit: maybe you can use third party software to optimize it.

The technology will move on and you will sell this laptop, and buy something else long before the battery gets weak enough to notice.
And, the battery will likely last through the next 2 owners, and the 3rd owner after you will pull your now awesome laptop from a pile of discards that noone wants.
Your laptop has long been parted out for the memory, CPU can't be pulled!!!, the GPU isn't worth it - noone wants it, and the battery was gutted out long before for recycling.
He will take your previously awesome laptop, put in memory, a new mobile power source, swap out the old Wifi card for something newer, load Windows 7 and some useful applications, and donate it to a low income family - to love and use for years to come.
You don't need to worry about the battery, the laptop charging circuit will keep it fresh for youLast edited: Mar 8, 2016 -
Joe, it looks like it comes with an MSI battery calibration tool.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 -
But, for me I keep aborting it as I have things to do with my laptop
If you do use it through to completion, please let us know how long it took and how it helped charge levels / run time on battery. -

If it's possible, and if you keep the laptop plugged most of the time then I would suggest you to set the maximum "allowed" capacity to 50% or something like that. With that simple change you are reducing the battery wear from 25%-30% a year to about 5% !! That's why I was so interested in that "feature" -
Like I said I aborted it several times as I needed the laptop back.
Type Utility Title MSI Battery Calibration
OS Win10 64 Release Date 2015-08-28

And to be fair, keeping the battery alive is the best thing to do if you're not using it, because once a battery is "depleted" it has to be recycled, so more resources are needed for a new one, which causes damage to the environment and to your wallet
Sadly few manufacturers care about this, and given that most users only care about how much time the battery last, there is little or no incentive whatsoever to change that mindset.
In the end, we are stuck with the battery at 100% charge all the time when we have the laptop plugged in, causing a huge level of wear on it, just because the manufacturer doesn't want to change a few transistors on the charging circuit to allow it to stop at a user-defined levelLast edited: Mar 8, 2016hmscott likes this. -

@hmscott
Why MSI bothered to make such a tool ? I mean, the calibration can be done manually without it, I don't see the point
I forgot another thing: manufacturers do have a reason to avoid the "feature" I was asking about, it's called MONEY !! They are pushing us to replace the laptop after 2-3 years of use which is absurd (I know many people using laptops for more than 4 years without any issue), so they won't do anything to prolong the battery life beyond that point. And now many of them are using internal batteries which obviously plays in their favor too: if it's difficult/expensive for the user to replace it, there is more probability that said user will upgrade.
Best example: cr apple
* RANT END * -
You could plug in numbers manually, but they wouldn't be correct without the testing and readings used to arrive at the correct numbers for the current state of the batteryEasyJoe likes this. -
So the CPU clock and mem is set to max multipliers for each core
The GPU is set to +135 and +300.
For others, it would be nice to post your SteamVR performance test results to compare our systems and see any discrepancies. -

Hey guys after abit of advice please! Is 17-18 seconds boot good enoigh for this laptop?!
Got my gt72 late feb, windows 8 upgraded to win 10 straight away and was running nice with boot times of about 7-8seconds,
But started getting really long looping boots after installing some games etc couldnt put my finger on what was causing it, uninstalled all apps and it worked again for a day or 2 then back to the looping boot taking 1min+
I decided to bite the bullet and take my 2ssd's out of raid and format them & make them single devices and installed fresh windows 10 on 1 ssd, now everything is all setup and working great but its just the boot time seems abit long considering it was 7-8sec, is dual ssd raid really double as fast for booting?! -
Actually I came here to have a rant about MSI and how long it's taking their authorised repairer in the UK to fix my laptop!
It was first taken for repairs on 30th of December, had to send it back to them TWICE afterwards as it kept crashing under load - no proper testing on their part.
The last time I have sent the laptop to D&J Henry was on 12th of February and they still have not fixed it!!! Have not been able to properly use is for nearly THREE MONTHS now.
They claim to have replaced heat sink, GPU and recently MoBo.
Really getting pissed off.
I want to use my laptop! -
So how many of you have done the 2nd 2.5" HDD mod? I was wondering if the power brick can keep up with the power draw and wether that little ribbon cable was thick enough to power two drives.

P.S. also, why is the second bay still empty on the 6th gen gt72? The CM236 chipset should have enough sata lanes, no?

Question about OC:
When using Intel ETU tool and nvidiaInspector, when set OC, does the setting stay active when closing those tools? Or should these tools be open when running games or the VR tester?
How do others use OC? Ways to make it permanent, even after reboot? Or simple shortcuts to enable/disable the OC?
I wonder... -
I get that 6.1 from OC of +135 and +350 via MSI Afterburner of my 980m.
You need to step up that GPU performance somehow
Intel Extreme Tuning Utility - XTU - will set the CPU OC at boot, and so will MSI Afterburner - you have to check the boxes to enable it. I use mine without OC at boot, I like to do it manually by running the app's as needed. -

I was just looking for MXM GPU upgrade kits.
There should be GTX980 (no M) MXM modules available, but I can not find any shop or reference to where to buy or even how much it costs.
Though I'm not planning to upgrade to 980, I was just wondering about the availability of them and maybe in future upgrade to Pascal based module.
Does anyone here have some links or even upgraded to 980? -
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
GT980 came with GT80 straight from the factory but no more than that. -
MSI advertises with the nice feature to be able to upgrade to better GPU's using MXM technology.
I would expect MSI to offer them.
What to expect when pascal GPU MXM is available? Would MSI offer upgrades?
If not, their promised upgrade path is useless. -
Hopefully Pascal won't require much?

Also, there's always some fine print so there are limitations to certain extent.
*MXM upgrade program is only available in selected countries and selected customers with special service, not for end-users to make upgrade by their own. -
Hey everyone, please help me with my issue. I ordered the MSI GT72 barebones with the 6820hk and gtx 980m. I received it and got the keyboard lighting to work with KLM but not with steelseries engine. Also my touch pad lighting and front LED lighting does not work! Is it due to the BIOS on the barebones being different? Here are pictures to show what I mean and my current bios. I'm using Windows 10 as well. Is it safe to install a gt72 branded bios into the gt72 barebones?

Make sure you download the latest steelseries drivers. You probably just have to get it working so you can setup the profile for the front to light up. Where did you get the laptop from?
