Keep monitoring. there was another user with this particular problem and it turns out it was the heatsink was not properly seating so it needed to be fixed by MSI it seems. If temps become too distant or hot, consider confirming if the heatsink is properly making contact and secure in place.

2016-04-14.png Hi,i have now update the EC too, but since i updated the VBIOS, my temps seem to be higher now. For instance, GPU, with no usage more than youtube, is at high 50s ; same is my CPU, before updating VBIOS and EC it was mid 30s.
Is someone having this problem? how do i fix this?

*The only thing i came up with is installing Silent Option and manually setting my fans to go a little faster so the temps stay at low50s

    Thanks in advance.

It seems the temps are a bit high.
I repasted my self the laptop today, and my normal temps on browser are in 24/25 for gpu and low 30s for cpu,

Yes, i had some problems with the cpu temps, as posted above, and even more with the lastest prime, even like 20ºc apart, and as everyone says "If u want it well done, do it yourself".
New paste, new pads where i thought it would be needed, and some bravery. [IMG]

    I have the gt72 i7 5700hq 980m.
It´s easy, the hardest part is taking the cooling off and putting in again in place, since u have to do it carefully to dont mess with the paste you applied.

Hi thanks for the answer, but i am afraid my problem is due to softaware, since it began happening since updating the VBIOS and EC. i will try to find out what is going on and post it here, if some one already managed to solve this without openin the laptop i apreciate your help.

    Thanks :)

    Which ones are missing?

the stock paste, i was about high 70s/ for cpu and gpu, 2 months ago take it to a store to repaste and repad, and went to low 70s both cpu and gpu, then this week i repasted my self, and went to like low to mid 60s for both, depend on the aplication, normal the cpu is on 40/50s, unless its csgo, than its 59/60ºc for both, capped 250fps

As thermal paste, first time i used 2 much paste, people usually do.

Put what u thing is needed, screw everything in place. wait a minute then unscrew
then u know u have put to much paste xD

A small dot, 3/4mm in the midle is enough

    Possible n00b question here;

the GT72S G-219 has 2.1 sound in it, however, when I go to configure the sound, it only shows up as 2, not 2.1; I never get the ability to configure it with a subwoofer. The same applies if I plug an external speaker system into it. Is this normal?

The internal subwoofer makes sound when you play anything without configuration. The configuration is intended for external.
Try putting your ear next to the internal subwoofer when you play something, you should be able to hear a light bass coming from it.

GT72S question, hope that's OK (Dragon Edition with skylake and GTX980). Got my laptop open box for a swell deal, am torn between keeping it and selling my GT80 Titan with 980ms... In VR with the HTC Vive the 72S runs a little bit better, which is unsurprising given still no SLI support. my problem is when I start the laptop up when unplugged the screen is covered with artifacts. anyone else run into this issue? wondering maybe if it was set to CPU overclocking and that's the problem.

You can roll back to any previous version and this is just to verify the root cause.

Artifacts usually mean the video card is overheating and most likely there is a chance of damage to the chip itself anytime you see it. My guess is the video card is running at full power/OC even when in battery mode and the video card either can't stay cool enough or it's already damaged as it is.

If I were you, I'd return / RMA it if possible. Not sure what you're able to do if it's an open box. Just my opinion though.

Yes, that is caused by defective GPU or VRAM which caused the data to become corrupted therefore creating artifacts as well as freezing/crashing during usage.

    Hello all,

I'm new here and I own the MSI GT72S-6QD Dominator.

Does anyone know how can I add a 2nd HDD to it as MSI's support staff didin't really answer my question as to how should I add it as there's no 2nd SATA port found on the motherboard, at least I haven't been able to locate it?

    Specs as follows:
    CPU: Intel Core i7-6820HK @ 2.70 GHz
    GPU: GTX-970M [3Gb of VRAM]
    ODD: DVD Writer
Storage: 128Gb SSD (Samsung) + 1Tb Hitachi HDD (One m.2 slot free from two slots and one HDD bay free)

This is the only way to add it:

It's not officially supported by MSI, so do it at your own risk.

It doesn't have a dedicated connections for a 2.5 inch drive, but that video shows one creative way of doing it. Otherwise, you could remove the optical drive and replace it with a hard drive caddy, if you don't really plan on using the DVD drive.

I am always impressed at the lengths (and creativity) some people employ to make something exist when it doesn't. I can't wait for the M.2 drives to come down in price so this sort of thing is unnecessary. I suppose I'll be waiting a long time.

I intend to use the DVD drive so that's not an option or actually upgrade it to an BD Writer some time in the near future. :)

Why would they even include an 2nd HDD bay if there's no official way to connect the HDD from it?

Based on what I found, the previous chipset didn't support enough sata lanes but I thought that changed when I bought a cm236 chipset GT72. Turns out they still didn't add a sata port. I'm Not sure why..

The optical bay may not provide the best performance because it's only SATA II (3.0 Gbps) but it should suffice if you are using it for storage purposes.
Even with SSD capped at 300MB/s it's still going to be better than conventional HDD anyway.

No, that is only to be expected. Just seems most my clients for a week ro so were upgrading MSI laptops, which is great ! About time everyone realises how easy it is to upgrade a MSI too, I mean if you have been on the Alienware section, you can clearly have seen in the last few years what was involved in troubleshooting and testing. Yet, there have always been more Alienware users upgrading, compared to MSI users. IDK, maybe they know its safe now, haha

Actually what alot of people practice is using the 0.5mm and just using more of them until you hit the proper snugness usually 2 or 3 is fine.

What does people think about what's the best approach to go with SSD's, M.2 or normal SATA? The price difference is noticeable...

With 3 available M.2 slots it's a lot easier to just add another M.2 drive. Adding a 2.5" SSD requires replacing the mechanical HDD which may or may not be an issue; depends if you're using that as a data repository.

Whatever is most convenient for you. The m.2 drives do cost a bit more. Installing an m.2 along with the current drive will allow you to clone everything over easier, if you want to do that.

I'm not sure what are you talking about as to my knowledge there's no PCI-E SSD's you can use on GT72S-6QD Dominator.
