NVidia announced their Pascal GPU's for laptops today.
MSI website already show new models using the GPU's (MXM).

So, now I'm curious if my investment in a laptop having promised and clearly advertised MXM upgradability (one of the reasons to buy my GT72 2QE dominator pro) will be honored.
    Anyone?

We're all in the same boat, and want what MSI promised us.

Now we wait and see if they come through on their guarantee.

    Prepare the riot gear.

    Conflicting reports, not looking good.

Is there a thread for the 'new' GT72VR (1070) or should I post here?

So the Notebook check review of the new GT72VR claims it has MXM 3.0 still.

The confusion is real out here.
New thread needs to be made. Go for it!

There is always a new thread, when a new GPU comes out. Mixing two different caards just causes confusion when questions are asked.

If no owner pops up to make one, I guess I'll do it when I have time.

When I first joined here, I asked about a 970m laptop thread and was told to go make one. I gave up on doing that and got all the information I needed so far from this thread.

We also have people in this thread with different chipsets with Gen 4/5/6 CPUs but are using this thread. The GT72VR only has a different video card for the most part.

    Just my opinion though!

GT72VR has got no Thunderbolt and no NVMe support. No RAID 0. GT73 is the new top of the range model for 17 inch screen laptop.

Should be in the Nvidia control panel. If you have a G-sync display there will be an option to turn it on there.

It may be just me, but I'm having issues trying to sell my MSI GT72S 6qe. I can't sell on here due to post count, but trying to sell on Facebook and the Hard OCP forums and no bites so far. I'm just curious if anyone else is running into a similar problem?

If you have a G-Sync capable screen, yet cannot find a setting to activate it, the problem may be the absence of a proper driver. Please see Ken's post HERE, and you may have to wait for an upcoming driver release.

So i went through the whole new line up of GT laptops on MSI's website. The amount of features they removed off the GT72 is just sad. They removed Thunderbolt 3 (and effectively the surround display feature); removed 3 m.2 ssd slots leaving only one sata/nvme combo slot. They also removed the ESS Sabre HiFi audio dac as well. For those of you who got the Maxwell GT72, consider yourself lucky.

Also, can someone please explain to me what "X boost" is?

I didn't check them all but it seems the GT73 with the nvidia 1080 has TB3 and full nvm support but some of the newer GT72 with 1070 or 1060 GPU do not. People will need to be careful they order the model that gives them what they want from a port and expansion capability.

Yes, the GT72 (Maxwell) sales have fallen off a cliff. Look at the prices for sold units on eBay, you'll see. But once people realize that the new GT72VR units are stripped down in terms of expansion slots, maybe there will be a jump in re-sales.

Yes, but the model he referenced is a Skylake model that is still selling for almost $2000 or more. I think the fact these are still expensive hurt sales since they are still being sold new in that price range. People who buy used computers are looking for deals and $2000 isn't a deal to a lot of people.

Yeah good point. I've got someone local interested if I strip out the 5 SSDs I have in there and just give him the original SSD it shipped with to lower the price. I hope it goes through.

Are you sure they removed 3 m.2 slots? I thought in the internal image here:
    http://www.hidevolution.com/msi-gt72vr-6rd-dominator-063-custom-built-gaming-laptop.html
It shows at least 2 m.2 slots with 1 filled and the other empty. I'm asking because I was considering buying the dominator-063 but hadn't noticed those missing features. Also on their specification page under thunderbolt it lists usb 3.1. Is that not the same as the old thunderbolt 3? Like did they just change the connector or is it actually entirely different?

I was looking for a lot of expansion slots like how the maxwell models had.

The image they supplied for the internals is false.
The picture of the so called "GT72VR" internals shows a daughterboard for the m.2 ssd's. From the detailed reviews i've seen, there's only one slot and no daughterboard

There is no hope for GT72 1080 i think. The GT72S comes with an additional power connector because it can house the GTX 980 DESKTOP card, something that the regular GT72 cannot do.

Ah yes, forgot about the desktop card. Oh well, it's not like i can afford the 1080 notebook if it was possible. Lets just hope someone comes up with a mod and makes use of that addition 14 pin connector (which i posted 3-4 pages ago)

This is a complete guess - but maybe it's just a diagnostic/JTAG port for the manufacturer.

Could be a reserved port for feature expansion, or diagnostic as Naweed mentioned.

Does anyone know if the GT72VR dominator-063 will run with windows 7? I have software that only runs under windows 7. I see on the MSI website MSI only shows windows 10 drivers so that makes me think windows 7 isn't supported. But then checking gentechpc they offer windows 7 there: http://www.gentechpc.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=MSI-GT72VR-Dominator-063-Build

@Naweed R. Would it be possible to buy a daughterboard off ebay or somewhere and maybe add it to the GT72VR?

Does anyone think it would be possible in the future to upgrade the GT72VR with a 1080 if it is originally ordered with a 1060? I'm confused if it's missing a power connector.

I know msi removed the manual graphics card selector switch. Which graphics card is used can still be controlled in software though, right? (maybe in the intel or nvidia control panels. I have another non-gaming notebook with dedicated graphics and that's how it works.)

Should I use gentechpc to buy it or some other website? I want to get 16gb of memory instead of 12gb. I could install it myself too. I read reviews of sellers and it seems everyone has some complaints except amazon because they are very good at taking back defective products.

It does run Windows 7 no problem. MSI only provide Windows 10 drivers but most of the drivers work on Windows 7 as well but not all. The GPU drivers will need to download from nVidia and they do provide Windows 7 drivers.

THe GTX 1080 uses 330W adapter so maybe won't work on GT72VR.

The Graphics card switching can not be control by software.

@GenTechPC What is the side effect of no graphics switch? Which drivers do not work, just the trackpad?

How much of an improvement is the gtx 1060 over in the GT72VR dominator-063 vs. the GT72S dominator G-037? Those are the 2 I am deciding between. The GT72S winds up being $300 cheaper due to a sale and a mail in rebate. So if there isn't a signifigant advantage of the GT72VR (MSI seems to have removed a lot from it) then I'll just go with the older model. I think a 970m would be plenty for what I want to do.

Actually a lot of gamer preferred no graphics switching so it can always use the nVidia. nVidia GPU also downclock when there are less demands on the graphics.

trackpad drivers also worked with Windows 7.

The performance is about 30% difference between two. The GTX 1060 performs about the same as GTX980M.

Clear something up for me there.

Does the GT72VR have the same exact button for manual switching as the older models? Also, does the GT73VR have manual switching as well?

    Hello.

    Got a GT72 6QE Dominator Pro G (980M + 6700HQ) a couple of months ago.
Now when I was opening it for some cleaning and stuff like that, I noticed that my SSD controller has only 3 spots to connect M.2 SSD.
SATA 1 + SATA 2, and PCI-E 1 on one side only (covered with a sticky tape so that I can not connect anything to it).

Is it ok? Or all of those notebooks should have all 4 slots on that controller?
Can I buy only the controller (Super Raid 4) somewhere so I can use PCI-E raid?

    Thank you.

I think the 980M is about 15% slower than the mobile 1060.
    http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile...060-Laptop-Benchmarks-and-Specs.169547.0.html

I own the G-037 with 970m and it is recommended if you are not picky about cranking graphics settings to their absolute max. The 970m is a good card for 1080p. Another upside to the older model is that is uses a faster nvme ssd. I believe the newer MSI model uses a slower m.2 ssd. Not likely to affect real world performance much, though.
