Even the MSI Hermes backpack is not that strong? I was searching for bags for the GT80 since its bigger and heavier and saw forum suggesting to just use the one it came with ( MSI hermes backpack ) or the everki titan. So I thought the Hermes was not suffering wear and tear that easily.

But if you say its also weak then maybe I should stay clear even for the MSI Hermes bag. Thanks

Did you try turning off g-sync, (reboot?), and creating a custom resolution at say, 80hz for a start, then go up 5hz at a time and see if 100hz will work :)

I've had several MSI/Asus laptop screens that would OC to 100hz, one to 105hz, and one only to 70hz from 60hz... it's worth a try.

Then when you have the custom resolution enabled, try turning on G-sync!

Please let us know how it works out :)

I'm afraid to do that because if I play with custom refresh I can damage the monitor...

It's a thing you tune, just like anything else. It's not gonna blow up - (don't forget to wear your safety goggles) - jk o_O

Here's what happens. It either works or it doesn't, if it doesn't - if it goes fuzzy and doesn't sync up - it will return to normal after a timeout - if not then power off with the power button, then you select the value that last worked - and use that as your new resolution setting.

You only change the refresh, leave everything else the same. Let me see if I have some screenshots to share, so you know what it looks like:

    Nvidia Control Panel Custom resolutions.JPG

There you go, have fun :)

Thank you. Since they removed some m.2 slots in the GT72VR im thinking on replacing it with a SSD.

Please keep in mind that the CD-ROM slot uses sata1. It's only worth it with mechanical drives, not SSDs.

    Aren't the newer GT7x CD-ROMs sata2? My GT70 0NE has that sata1.

    Well, I have done it.

I have upgrade untill 100hz with no problems and activated G-Sync.

    Everything seems to work fine.
But, holly ****, I'm not 100% confident with this, I think I'll go back to default resoultion.

One thing guys. Lets see if you can help me.

My GT72VR comes with an standard m.2. sata SSD.
I want to know if this laptop has support for NVME SSD. After some questions to MSI Iberia, MSI Global, etc, I don't trust in them anymore. They tell me different things. They are not coherent.

That's why I want to ask you if I can know via BIOS if this mean NVME compatibility:

That's why I'm trying to know without opening it.

Does it matter? It's what we have in the device. In practice it's only a small performance boost but at a minimum it adds some flexibility as to the type of device we can use.

There is a GT72VR version which comes with NVME SSD drive, so I guess they share the same MoBo, connections, etc.
So it should be NVME capable, but I'm not sure.

Hey, that's great news, you're a pioneer with these new screens and G-sync.

You're golden, you don't need to worry. The screen won't sync at a frequency it can't support, so if you are sync'd and it literally looks ok - it's ok.

I have run OC'd screens for years and have had no failures. 100hz on several for years, and another at 70hz, and many before those recent ones as well. And, so have lots of other people :)

I also got confirmation from Asus way back when saying as long as the screen sync is stable, it's ok to run at that rate.

Keep the saved custom resolutions, and run them more as you are more comfortable.

I keep a number of choices for screen refresh because not all games will run as high as 100 fps average. Most do on my GT80 980m SLI, but some like Batman AK don't - about 85hz is about right for that game.

You already have G-sync, so I don't need to explain how to use a Frame Limiter like Rivatuner, but I thought I would mention it anyway if someone without G-sync reads this and wants to OC their display.

You just set the Frame Limiter Rivatuner to refresh+1 (61,101,86 etc) to avoid screen tearing. It also limit's CPU/GPU load/heat generation when keeping fps under maximum. Some games will auto set vsync to your screen refresh, otherwise leave vsync off.

Again, the screen is in no danger from damage at 100hz, enjoy :)

So the fastest NVMe is around 2.5 gigabytes per second. This is achieved via gen 3 4x pcie slots that can run up to 4GBps. Based on his screenshots, its going to be either 1GBps or 2GBps maximum depending on if it's PCIE 1x or 2x.

Replacing the M2 SSDs is an easy job - you can see the bracket as soon as you pop off the bottom lid. Look on YouTube for complete disassembly video to do the memory upgrade. You might be able to get away with leaving the heatsinks on but I'm not 100% sure.

Yep, now it works better. Unfortunatelly, after upgrading Dragon Center app now MSI True Color app crashes.
I tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling, but keeps crashing.

    I
The m.2 ssd is simple I know how to do that. I have also seen the low quality video of the GT72 disassembly. I was hoping to find any other info, seems real sparse and by looks of it not many end up swapping out the ddr3 1600 for faster memory but for me it would offer an advantage. I already have 24gb 1866 memory on hand and an extra 16gb of 1600. So for all the hassle , just upgrading to 32gb 1600 is way easier than 24 GB 1866. For me it is more time vs complexity but also the potential of tearing or breaking a connector. Having built many desktops w fully GPU/CPU blocks and custom cooling I know I can do it but I dumped all my desktop gear for one reason, to avoid the amount of time spent tinkering thus the purchase of this laptop. The m.2 ssd upgrade is minimal and I guess it is not end of world if I remained w the 1600 and return the 1866. I just thought there would be a few more posts w ram upgrades available. I guess I could comb through the 368 page thread as well....

not sure that you need it , I didn't have it installed but a some sort of it is embedded in Dragon Center , if you check SYSTEM TUNER then MSI RGB , I think it is now part of DC.

I bought a GT72 6QD (970M).. I am very happy with this baby, I will not use it for gaming (just the normal casual gaming) but for work since I will be far from my desktop for some time...

I am curious about the possible future upgrades... gtx 970M for now is ok for my use.. (I have a 980 on my desktop) but I wish to know more about the space inside for internal upgrades... from AIDA64 I notice that 2 out of 6 SATA channels are used (one for HDD and one for ODD), I know there is another slot for another NVMe SSD..
I wonder if there is space for a second hdd or I have to remove the existing one and put a bigger one.

About mods: as of now I undervolted the cpu by 195mv and overclocked the BCLK by 2 mhz.. I wonder if this limitation is software (microcode) or hardware. Did anybody try a modded bios with a microcode update 0x74 ?!

For the 970M overclocking is not a problem.. also there a modded bios would do.. but I don't need it even if I am able to do it.

There is apparently no way to enable hidden bios features using the known EFI firmware variable (used also by DUFUS utility), the bios resets it.. even if it is present...
Strange behaviour, probably they just changed the way to do it.. I will investigate more about this.

I dumped the ODD fimrware too, I am not able to modify for autoreset or region free, but if someone wants I can provide the dumped firmware files.

Strangely enough I also noticed that the EC firmware inside the GT72 6QD BIOS is not newer in newer bioses.. it seems that MSI rolled back the EC firmware a few times...

BIOS 118 has EC firmware 1.109...

If anyone is interested, again, I extraced all EC firmwares ever released which include versions: 1.106, 1.108 and 1.109

Strange, my GT72 suddenly stops booting after the MSI logo shows.
I can get into the BIOS and see no strange stuff.

But when booting, the MSI logo is displayed, no beeps heard and after a few seconds the machine just switches off.

Any hints to check? Any tips to see what the issue might be or solution?

Have you tried that EC reset button on the bottom. You have to use a paperclip. I think there's an instruction on how long to hold it and whether it's once or twice.

I found the instruction and it only mentions to insert paperclip and reset, no time or sequences.

But unfortunately this does not solve it. The laptop does not go beyond the MSI boot logo and switches off.

Here's the actual e-mail I got from MSI support earlier this year when mine failed to boot.

-- Please see if you can try clearing out the EC you will see on the underside of the laptop. Be sure to unplug AC adapter and any USB device you may have connected the insert a paper clip or pin and insert. Then engage the button for 30sec and remove wait a few sec and again insert and engage button for another 30sec and remove then connect AC power and turn on.

Doing that and loading the optimized defaults in the BIOS fixed it for me.

Thanks for the suggestions. I followed those exact steps but issue persists.
I will now create a bootable USB stick to see what happens.

I guess creating a simple DSL version is ok?
Does it matter which USB port to use to try to boot it?

I created the USB boot stick and see in the BIOS it recognizes it. Set this to primary first boot in sequence, but again, the MSI logo stays a couple of seconds and machine switches off.
I also tried a bootable CD and it does not even spin up to access it.

I'm afraid now I must RMA it.

I do not have any experience with MSI support. I guess I have to contact the local MSI support and let them pick it up?
(it's The Netherlands, and it seems in Eindhoven there is a MSI repair centre).

I have been all the weekend playing at 100hz in my GT72VR 75hz display.
No problems at all. Very nice perform.

    Thank you @hmscott

    Well that's nice.
I requested RMA by phone and got the email with the how-to.

The laptop will be picked up at home, but it will be shipped to.....POLAND.

I wonder what the MSI repair centre in Eindhoven, which is a few kilometers away, is actually repairing...
