I believe your RAM was manufactured by Kingston. Get in touch with their local office and ask which memory to go for. By the way you are posting in the wrong thread.ekkolp likes this.
-
my laptop is saying not charging when plugged in
-
That's normal, between 100% - 95 (90)% depending on the model, less battery wear.
-
it's working now, it was 36% when it stopped charging
-
If you are not aiming at games, the old model seems the better option
Is the GT72 able to take advantage from this kind of memory (DD4 at 2400) ?? -
Prostar Computer Company Representative
No, this generation of the GT72 runs DDR3L RAM, up to 1600.
As a side note, many current mobile CPUs support up to 2133 memory, although 2400 can be installed (but won't run as fast as its rated to). -
Is the first post being updated? I can't read the 376 pages. Is there any interesting update/fix/mod that I may be missing for a gt72/980?
I want to update mine with one of those bios, but it is hard to decide. For the ones who already tried them: which one is better?hmscott likes this. -
I don't do this, FYI, I stick with the stock BIOS / vBIOS for my gaming PC - it's not enough of a gain for me for the risk - so I would recommend not doing it
But, if you want to play and learn, then I would look to direct interaction with Svet for the MSI BIOS recommendation, and for either Svet or Prema for the 980m vBios.
Each laptop model, generation, may have a different BIOS - slightly different enough to not be compatible with other "like" models.
It's easy to get confused and flash the wrong BIOS - ding! => first disaster possibility to be aware of
People brick their laptops / GPU's all the time.
There are usually recovery methods before RMA available, but there is some talent and lots of patience involved - that panic feeling takes away much rational thought - it's best to be patient and wait for yourself to calm down before doing any recovery work
Give Svet the make/model number - the long number with the -xxx number, like mine is an MSI GT80 SLI-263 - then Svet can get the right BIOS for you.
As I recall the package he delivers has everything in it, including recovery instructions.
Read everything a few times over a couple of days to let it all sink in, it will look much different in your eye's after successfully having done it the first time, and even more different if you run into trouble and are trying to recover.
It's fun to do, getting the max power from your hardware, but it's a risk to do the BIOS/vBIOS swap - and run a BIOS / vbios with safety limits removed.
How about normal OC tools?
Did you use XTU / TS for CPU tuning and MSI Afterburner for GPU? That tuning is safe, and can actually help you find on the borderline parts for return / RMA - and I recommend doing this to push the parts early on to find these flaky components.
If you brick your expensive laptop, you may need to pay the vendor for the work to fix it, as they might catch the flash of the non-stock BIOS / vbios.
If they ask don't lie, sheepishly admit you flubbed a BIOS / vbios flash, and hope they have mercy on you and fix it for free
Have fun

Hi there.
I'm trying (for the first time) to cast my screen to my Samsung smart TV.
I can cast without problems from my android phone, but my GT72 2QE (4th gen) running Windows 10 not.
I can see my TV and connect, but some tim elater my TV shows this error : "video format not supported" and the screen stays black.
I have read many topics about mira/screen cast and it seems a Windows 10 issue. Probably driver?
Does anyone here have this working and where should I look to get it working here? -
Yep. I did try, with the original version of Afterburner and without touching the CPU. It estarted to show artifcats on screen after a while, so I got back to stock values and didn´t have time to do more tests. Maybe it would be good to undervolt? don´t know. Will try it allhmscott likes this.
-
You didn't touch the CPU settings, but you did OC the GPU, and then you got artifacts? If so you OC'd too far on the GPU
If you aren't getting artifacts on stock settings, always check that first, then try upping the GPU core first a little at a time and test, then up it again, then test, etc until you experience a problem like you saw with artifacts - or if the benefits of OC like higher scores don't show up anymore at higher GPU settings.
Then set the GPU core back to stock and OC the GPU Vram - until you see artifacts then back off VRAM OC settings until you don't see artifacts.
Then try the GPU OC with both the GPU Core and GPU Vram OC settings set at the same time, if you don't have problems then voila, you have optimized the GPU OC settings
If you do have problems with both GPU Core and GPU Vram OC settings your arrived at independantly, then start tuning again with the GPU Core OC set and reduce the VRAM OC settings a bit until you are stable again.
It's an art, both in patience and tuning.
Have fun

Anyone have a guide on how to take the fans out to clean the dust? The exhausts as well!

It's very easy....
Although not GT72 but should be close.

Doesn't show how to take out the fan at all. Takes off the backplate, shows the fan, then next frame he's holding it!!! Is it just a case of unscrewing the fan or do I need to remove heatpipes etc?

Pretty sure fan can just be unscrewed at this stage.

Hello all, was hoping you may be able to help me with issues I've been having with my GT72VR 1070VR. I've had clean installs, updated to newest VBIOS on vendor website but I'm having issues where the GPU randomly locks up during gameplay and boots me out of games with "XX Game could not access graphics hardware." errors. I've had to resort to underclocking the GPU using MSI Afterburner but some games (like The Division) still manage to get past the underclock and hit a core clock of ~1800 before my game breaks and boots me out. Are there any custom VBIOS I can use or anything I can do to alleviate this? Thanks!
It really sucks to play online competitive games like Rainbow Six Siege and then get booted out leaving your team high and dry
Just noticed there's another thread for my actual model! Will try to see there as well..Last edited: Dec 16, 2016 -
Hi, I'very been the happy owner of a MSI GT72 2QE for about one year and a half until last month when the same thing happened to me and now I'm experiencing random shutdowns. It didn't started like a regular thing, I thought it'll be just a few software issues but it got worse, my system is kinda unstable, sometimes I can play for hours, sometimes it crashes every 10 mins. Can you please provide an update on the new charger if it did fixed your problem afterall and did you ever encountered any random crashes while playing? I've looked everywhere, the main reasons seems to be overheating but full load temp is around 65-75°C so I contacted msi support and they sent me a series of links to update the drivers which I did but I'm feeling like I'm wasting the time here. Thank you very much!

Check temperature using XTU or other utilities. Make sure to clean up the fan/heatsink even though you mentioned that you were getting 65-75 Celsius. Additionally, check AC adapter after the system shut off using a volt meter to verify if it still provides any output. -
Hello and happy new year!
Things with the new adapter are a bit better but unfortunately I've still had it happen once or twice again. I finally decided to take the time and open up the laptop and clean the dust off the vents and since then, everything has been fine (at least so far).
My temperatures were not very high either. Maybe 80 degrees under very heavy load (bf1 most settings on ultra), but I thought maybe some other area gets heated up, which might be further away from the temp sensor.
It turned out to be fairly easy to open the back and unscrew the fans, so I'm planning to do this more regularly now.
Regarding crashes and shutdowns, I've had neither. The only problem I've had is switching from ac power to battery for a split second, resulting in major lags during gameplay and screen dimming. -
Hello and a happy new year to everyone!
Thank you very much for the update, I'm sorry to hear that you still got the problem, I'll send mine back to warranty just for them to have a look at it hopefully they will know what to do about it. I thought a clean install of windows might help but I was wrong but mthe laptop is still shutting down whilst being under heavy stress and I switched back to integrated gpu for a second but when I tap the 'gpu' button on the laptop nothing happens so at the moment I'm stuck on the integrated one. Any ideas how to activate my dedicated gpu again? Thank you very much! -
As I said, cleaning the vents seems to have fixed the problem I was having, at least for now.
For the GPU button you need to make sure you have all the MSI software installed. If i recall correctly, it's 'SCM' that controls the GPU switching. -
Well bad news... This problem is really killing my mood...
It came back.
As a matter of fact, the charger isn't getting recognized at all. Which means that once my battery runs out. That's it... Weird thing is that with the new charger it's been working OK (still did the hopping every now and then) for quite a while.
I'm not sure if the new charger is also toast now, which sounds unrealistic, or if there is some other problem.
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=279059.0
This guy on that thread is having exactly the same problem and he managed to take a video of it.
I really wish somebody provides a solution to this. Otherwise sending the laptop in is the only option, with a ridiculous turnaround time and unknown cost
-
Unfortunately I had no other option but to send mine in and couple days ago I've received a text saying "The part(s) required for the repair of your Laptop Computer have been ordered. Kind Regards." So definitely it seems to be something hardware related, they didn't gave me any details yet. I will post an update once I will have it back.DimitrisCSD likes this.

Thank you for your reply.
Where are you from? How long have they said the repair is going to take?
Mine's packed waiting for picking up arrangements to be made. They quoted 14-21 days for the repiar. That's going to be a horrible long wait...
Assuming they honour the 2 year + 3month warranty, my unit is still under warranty for the next 3 days!!! I hope they pick it up before that!
If you happen to contact them, could you please ask for some details about what was wrong and what was required to be replaced?Last edited: Jan 10, 2017 -
I'm currently living in the UK aswell (originally from Romania) and all I did was to email the MSI Support which I remembered from a previous screen issue that I've had and yeah they mentioned something about 14 days, but hopefully they'll send it back sooner than that. The company that does the repair service is D&J Henry and as far as I know they are located in Birmingham (I live in Kidderminster btw). But don't worry they will provide a sheet of paper explaining what part they had replaced or what needed repairing anyway. I'm sorry I didn't replied earlier as I was working and hope they will collect your laptop as soon as possible
-
Hey man thank you for your reply. I'm originally from the north part of Greece so we're neighbours
I now live in Oxford.
Yes I did speak on the phone with D&J and they sounded like friendly professional people. They're based in Coventry.
They verified that my warranty is still valid so all good in that aspect.
The courier is picking up the box tomorrow so I'm hoping this will get sorted soon. In the meantime I'm trying to use my 10 year old sony vaio AW series at home for browsing and its running at 85 to 90 degrees idle! -
Hi man,
Earlier on today I've received my laptop and now I'm trying to configure it as they reinstalled the Windows and data on both hdd and ssd is gone.
As for the actual repair, they sent me this: https://s23.postimg.org/65c4m38az/20170112_121626.jpg which has been my worst fear at the beginning.
I am also really happy with the fact that they moved pretty quick with the repair and the delivery and I appreciate their warranty policy, even though I voided the warranty sticker to upgrade the ram memory.
Offtopic: I can say you've been lucky, I had to rely on my phone the whole time
I hope you did a backup on all your personal data before you packed your laptop, unfortunately I learned this the hard way lolLast edited: Jan 12, 2017 -
What the hell? Why on earth did they have to reinstall windows and wipe everything? Even the storage HDD? That makes no sense.
The important stuff is all backed up but I haven't saved an image of the raid 0 array because it's split into windows and linux and it is just too hard to backup the whole array onto a single drive.
I did specifically ask them to not wipe data as I do not think there is a reason for it. As this is my work laptop setting everything up again would take a long time.
How long did they take all together for the repair?
UPDATE:
I just called them to specify I did not want them to delete data as it is a hardware issue and they confirmed that there are notes on the case to not do that. Thankfully...
They also updated me that they are replacing the motherboard of the laptop. I suspect our problems were different in the end. Mine looks like a dodgy AC power jack, and MSI just wants to replace the whole motherboard rather than desolder the old one and solder in a replacement. Fair enough since this is warranty work!
I should also note that my experience so far with the D & J Henry repair center has been absolutely fantastic. They seem fast, really helpful on the phone and easy to get hold of. They also send updates via texts and emails at every step of the process.
I only wish that the repair service is just as good as everything else!Last edited: Jan 13, 2017 -
Oh well I presume that I'm at fault on this one I forgot to provide my windows account password but I guess they could've rang me to ask for it anyway. I'm not too bothered I've only lost some old photos and I only use my laptop for gaming as everyday use lol.
Oh well I presume that I'm at fault on this one I forgot to provide my windows account password but I guess they could've rang me to ask for it anyway but I've been warned that they won't take any responsibility for any lost data and fair play to them. I'm not too bothered about it I've only lost some old photos and I use my laptop mainly for gaming as everyday use.
The repair time including picking up and delivery took only a week which I've been really impressed by that and hopefully this is was the last time I've had to contact the repair service lol.
Also if you're on facebook don't hesitate to add me (Alexandru-Daniel Pîrlan) I'd like to think I gained a friend from all this experience lol

A question to whoever might know:
Considering the RMA service will have my motherboard replaced, what happens to the BIOS VBIOS and EC firmware updates that I have done? Do I need to do them again? I am under the impression that they are saved on the board itself somewhere, right?
Maybe not VBIOS since that's for the GPU.
Anyone, please? -
If they are svet's bioses you should still have a copy in an email somewhere, if MSI do remove them.
-
No they are the official versions from the MSI website. They just brought out new versions after I bought my laptop so I had to update them.MiSJAH likes this.

Hey guys,
Just wondering. For those of you who have the GT72 6QD and have installed the new redesigned dragon gaming center, does the Fn + F4 button work anymore?
Every time i press that combination for P1 it never launches the dragon gaming center. it isnt really a huge issue but would be useful if i dont have to take the effort to open it form the tray icon (im seriously a lazy person)

I'm at work now but everything seems to be working fine! Boot order broke but this was expected as there's a new motherboard. Fixed that so now GRUB works again.
I will stress it more at home to see if it's fine under load.
One thing I have to say is that i am 100% pleased with the D&J Henry repair center. What an outstandingly professional company. Communication was great. Getting hold of them was quick and they were really helpful and polite. Total turnaround time door to door was 8 days (days not working days).
If this lasts and it doesn't show any issues I'll be totally happy with the whole experience. Great support.
In fact I will try to find if there's some place where I can give them a positive review as they totally deserve it.
UPDATE: Stressed the PC a bit last night on BF1 and everything seemed fine! I'm hoping this is a permanent fix! Thumbs up MSI support!Last edited: Jan 20, 2017 -
PLEASE HELP! EMERGENCY!!!
I'm starting to feel this laptop is just cursed...
So my previous problem was fixed with the laptop not charging, under warranty. It now charges fine...
However, I just got back from work (where I've been using it just fine all day) and just trying to power it on, all I get is a black screen. Nothing. No MSI logo no loading screens - blank. Screen isn't even on.
The power and GPU lights are on, and if I wait for a while the fans just go full speed. At that point I'm just forced to hold the power button down and shut it down.
Does anyone have the slightest idea what could be going on? Or should I just throw it out of the window. I'm furious!!!
There's a deadline coming for work and I need this laptop. It looks like it has to go back to Coventry now and god knows how long it's going to take again... -

Sorry to hear about your situation, it is bad when you have something urgent to do but the only tool became unusable.
The root cause of failure can be a BIOS issue or GPU issue (more likely), try holding the power button for 4 seconds and then just press on it again, see what happens.
Also, see if you can also get to a backup computer for now to resolve the urgency issue you have, and call MSI to get a 2nd RMA with a return shipping label since you got your NB back within the first month after the repair.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -
How can it be a BIOS issue though? I haven't updated it or messed with it after it came back. Can it just get corrupt on it's own?

Hi Guys,
Fist – thanks for a great resource on a great laptop. Been loving mine since September ’15 with very few problems and no major ones.
That all changed yesterday though, as my GT72 6QE will no longer switch on. Seems to me the battery is not charging as I watched it ticking down whilst plugged in, and was checking around as it was happening so have some solid facts & observations but not enough technical knowledge to reach a conclusion as to what the problem is and what my best steps for solving it are.
Any help greatly appreciated! I’m keen to get massacred trying liberate the Earth from the Alien & ADVENT horde in Long War 2 (using characters from the Alien films I might add) and have a promising colony to manage on a far-off forgotten Rimworld that may soon be able to liberate the immediate region from the local pirate suicide squads. Naturally I feel this work is important for the species!
Problem – Battery drained fully while plugged in before my terrified eyes (watched it from 10% warning down to 5% auto-shutdown) and now it won’t start at all. Charger block green light is still on, though charger block no longer gets hot (at all) when plugged in since laptop has been inert.
Steps taken so far:
– left it for a while and tried again (nothing, but at least I now had coffee)
– tried a different wall socket (nothing)
– checked the charger, jack and power input thoroughly for any signs of damage (no visible damage)
– tried 2 different chargers and several combinations of power cord (ac?) / block (dc?) (nothing)
– tried my charger in my mates Alienware (doesn’t fit)
– watched a woeful Italy Wales rugby game
– drank some Jamesons to keep my spirits up
– read several things online including here (seems it could either be charger / power input into the laptop (loose wire) / perhaps simply the internalised battery)
– Took the pop plate off the back and had a good look at the port where the power jack plugs in from the inside (no visible damage)
– vacuum cleaned the fans and general dust, oh so gently (had not broken the warranty tape previously)
Plan:
– clean out the power jack input with a cotton wool bud (that’s an English q-tip)
– try to find and remove the battery and run it without that
[– Use a multi-meter on the charger if I can get hold of one and work out how to (may have one this eve)]
– drink some Jamesons to keep my spirits up
– not spend money on a battery / charger until I’m sure what’s letting the side down
– kick some alien/pirate/Planetmans arse
– pr0fit?
Observations:
– did not drop, kick, or even move the laptop or cable; was charging fine an hour prior to this all happening and me ****ting myself
– everything else was working absolutely fine when I noticed the battery wasn’t charging and I’ve no reason to be concerned beyond the power issue
– recently the charger block has been getting up to higher temp than it used to, and very often (but stays cold since the laptop won’t charge)
– worse, I noticed the charger jack itself has recently been very HOT, too HOT in fact (too much charge / loose connection indicated?)
– in fast paced / action games the fans have over time become much more noisy, and active for longer than they used to (before hoovering them of course)
– the laptop had no problems charging up to full that I noticed before yesterday and I use it a lot
– the jack is a bit “loose” in the back of the laptop, and I don’t think it used to be
– Jamesons is cheap, very tasty and available bloody everywhere
Questions:
– what do you think the problem is? Battery / charger / dc power input
– what does the power jack (the charger end pin that I plug into the laptop) getting super-hot indicate?
– is the Alienware charger that I tried not working noteworthy? i.e. should it have worked? (has same voltage, 14% more amps total, same looking jack as mine)
– if it is the dc power input inside the laptop can someone not used to digging inside laptops (but tech literate) reasonably expect to disassemble & fix & reassemble?
Thanks for the great community, thanks for reading and Thanks In Advance For Any and All Help
TL;DR battery died when plugged in & recently charger pin end has been extremely hot - what's the problem - battery / charger / dc power input??hmscott likes this. -
Sounds like your power jack (on the laptop side) has died. They have a tendency to break one of the solders and stop charging.
In my case I had noticed the laptop switching from AC power to battery while plugged in under heavy load, for quite a while, until it finally bit the dust and stopped recognizing AC power all together.
I RMA'ed it and they replaced the motherboard. I do believe that the problem was just the power connector socket, but the service center would not take the time to desolder and resolder a new connector under warranty. They'd rather replace the whole motherboard.
Sadly, I have come across a few people with the same problem lately. It looks like it's some kind of design flaw.
My suggestion is to RMA it as soon as possible before your warranty runs out. -
If the warranty was 12 months I'm way too late. Sadly.
Thanks for the quick reply Dimitris, that's as I feared. Have it open now but don't really have much idea what I'm doing or looking at as yet. Will watch the disassembly video again and try to dig into it a bit deeper.
Anyone else have any experience or advice with this? Resouces I can consult? From what I read I may have to resolder the dc power jack. Feels smart to unplug and replug everything internally first.
I have a friend who has limited experience in soldering so I'll call him in once I work out the problem I suppose.
Will post back my experiences for others.

The warranty is 2 years on these laptops and in some cases (like mine) it's 2 years + 3 months due to a promotion.
Go to the MSI website and check the product page (assuming you have registered it on purchase). That should state how long your warranty is.
If for any reason (which I do not recommend if you have valid warranty), you do decide to try to solder it yourself, here's a guide:
It's not the same laptop, but the AC jack should be really really similar, if not the same.
You can find the part on ebay.Last edited: Feb 6, 2017 -
Thanks man.
Two years may be just about good, but couldn't get it registered on my phone so went ahead as planned:
Stripped it down to the mboard - which was a little easier than I thought it would be / the video made it look to a novice - and the DC jack looked ok to me. No solder problems and not loose at all. Will post pics tomorrow.
Sadly that and cleaning / re-plugging everything inside didn't make a difference to it powering up/on/again, but it sure was dirty in there! Also no burning smells when I plugged her in (first no battery connections then with), so I'll call that a win for today.
Will have another think tomorrow but currently leaning towards the adapter being at fault in my case.
Certainly appreciate the help and will keep updating here for future owners to wonder at my ineptitude and antics
Cheers,
Jamie
