I believe the kind of damage on there would not be visible. A solder or pin has broken in a not visible area and power can't go through. That's why the tip of the cord gets really hot. Mine did exactly the same. If you have the appropriate equipment you could test the motherboard circuit to see if current is going past the DC jack.

In my case I spent £70 and bought a new adapter thinking what you're thinking but unfortunately it didn't help at all. I now have 2 adapters so I guess that's a plus!

Good to hear that it was easy to strip down. I've never had the balls to do that myself, especially under warranty! Good job!

hi, can anyone help, I've got the gt72 2qe, I've got 2 problems

    1. boot hangs on the msi logo after shutdown but works fine when I press the power button and also works after restarts

    2. pc works fine then randomly when I click anything it does nothing for several minutes but mouse still moves then it'll start working like normal, when it stops responding, if I'm online sites won't load and videos freeze until it works again, I reinstalled windows and it didn't help

    Sounds weird.

Check the temperatures and make sure nothing's overheating.

If you're still under warranty maybe it's worth it to save yourself the headache and RMA it.

If you are in the UK no. Assuming you don't break anything while you're in there.

Turn off Fast boot in the Bios should solve this issue. If that helps see if there is a bios update for your system with this issue fixed. The 6QD/QF had the same issue and there was a bios update that fixed the issue.

I just started getting an error from SCM when I try to switch to Intel GPU. It was working just fine before. I re-installed it and no change.

    Anyone else experiencing this?

I hit the button, the dialog comes up, I press restart and then it throws the error and never restarts.

EDIT: Wow, it was Windows Update. It downloaded something and it broke SCM gpu switching. I uninstalled that update and now it's working again. However, I suppose it's just going to break again when it re-updates.

I hope MSI looks into this and sorts it out. It's not looking good...

I haven't tried it but Nvidia put out a hotfix for the Creators Update, it might be worth a shot - or wait for a more complete fix in a WHQL release later... no need to rush into the Creators Update, it's got little of interest.

The nvidia patch is likely not relevant to this problem. It looks like the .NET framework has updated and the apps now crash while trying to use it.

They will have to release new versions of all these apps.

Hi everyone. New member here. I just noticed the GPU switching error today. I tried installing the SCM update from Apr. 19, 2017 from MSI's website but it actually made it worse! It used to be that I would get the Microsoft .NET error when switching the GPU but if I manually restart the machine it will switch. Now, when I hit the GPU button nothing happens, not even the error. Opening the SCM application just gives me an error. I tried doing a system restore but windows gave me errors. What was your fix?

I just installed SCM version 13.017.04187

I am working on one of these wherein the center pin of the power input is shorted (0ohms) to the positive voltage pins. Does there exist a schematic for this board?

Also, am i correct in assuming that these work the same way as the Dell laptops in that the center pin is connected to a Dallas 1-Wire chip inside the power brick? Used to ID the brick to the motherboard.

Ive already removed the jack to make sure it wasn't in internal short on the jack.

I am sure there is but it's not a documentation that is publicly available due to it being a classified information by MSI. Not sure if anyone else has such information though.

Understood. I know sometimes you can find full schematic PDFs and even Boardview files, which greatly helps in tracking down problems.

For the record, the center pin does not function as an ID pin (as in the dells) it is tied to the 19V supply directly. So my measurement was not an indication of a fault.

My repair is done, turned out to be an open resistor on the motherboard. Replaced that and up and running.

That's true, only when it's leaked but seems very rare for MSI NBs. Man, but you are the pro and you were able to fix it. It's hard enough to solder such tiny resistor on a motherboard.

    Hello fellow GT72 users!

Last time I disassembled my GT72 for cleaning I've lost the HDD - Motherboard connector which looks like this:

Do you happen to know where I could get new one? I'm from Europe so I'd prefer to buy from here ;).

    Thanks!

Hello everyone. I would really appreciate anyone's help on this one. I recently got this GT72S 6QE and noticed some bluish tint on the screen.

Was wondering if this is a software thing and if it could be replaced by a reformat? And if it's not, can I replace it with a higher refresh rate screen like the one from the GT73VR like this one? And is the installation easy?

I suppose it's a non-software related issue. I've got the same thing on my screen too.

That looks like the LED panel is depressed by the plastic cover. You press a point elsewhere on the top lid and verify the change of coloration.

Pressing elsewhere on the top and bottom lids are doing nothing sadly. I wanna try and remove the lid while it's still on but it seems scary. Haha

Just tried and removed the lid the issue is still there. Sigh. [IMG]

Sorry that it didn't help but it is a hardware issue nevertheless (defective panel), please contact MSI to process a RMA.

This was bought 2 years ago and just got it as a hand me down and the previous owner only noticed it now when I showed it to him

Anyway. Planning to buy a replacement panel instead. The current one is a 75hz ips 30 pin panel gsync panel. Will the 120hz TN FHD gsync one from the gt73vr be compatible on this one?

Panel can fit but the connector can be incompatible. Can you check the pin-outs on your current panel?

Can that be done without physically checking for now? Almost got a heart attack when I forced the panel lid too much and heard a cracking sound.

Anyway. Googling them and found out my panel id 30edp pin. I just have to look for 30edp pin compatible panels at 120hz right?

Anyone know where I can get a good quality replacement battery for my GT72 2QE?

The part number is BTY-L77 and I've found some online on some weird looking sites but I'm not sure I should trust them.

    I'm located in the UK.

I also sent the Coventry service center an email but I am not sure they will give me a battery to install myself. I don't want to send it to them and have to pay shipping and installation costs. I found a guide online and the procedure looks straight-forward.

My wife owns a GT72 2QE-695US. As of today it shut off out of nowhere. Long story short.. when you plug in the power supply to the laptop the green power light on the battery block turns off. That power supply works in other laptops. So the only information I can find online points to motherboard being bad.

Is it possible to find out what motherboard is in this laptop, so that I can replace it, without tearing it open first?

This is the link to the same laptop.

The motherboard name is the first few letters of the Bios name. You should also be able to check the product name in the Bios. Figure out that code.
For example: GT63VR/GT73VR use MS 17A1 mainboard.
The Bios name is starts with E17A1, firmware starts with 17A1....

So most likely your mainboard has part of that name in it, preceded by MS or MSI.

Thank you Falkentyne for taking the time to respond! Unfortunately the Laptop itself cannot power up so I can not get into the Bios to check that (assuming I'm understanding you correctly).

Turns out it was a bad GPU. Starts up fine without it. All I need to do is find a PCI-E type 980m correct? Or could I also downgrade to a 970/960m mxm type? Not sure I can/want to spend the money on another 980m at the moment.

How do you guys reset the mobo when it’s bricked? Tweaked with Afterburner and all I could remeber was adjusting the gpu voltage I think after ticking the “unlock gpu power” option in the settings. Also ticked the start afterburner at startup and minimized.

After restarting all I get is a black screen. Did the EC reset and removed the CMOS battery for about 5 minutes but still a black screen.

Have I royally fukced up or can this still be fixed? :(

    Keep the charger plugged in.
I don't know if this works on the GT72 dominator pro. It works on the GT73VR. Not sure about the GT72VR. But there's no loss in trying. I have to clear CMOS *every* time I switch from Command rate 1T to 2T (or I try to load defaults when trying to do stuff (or if I have to deal with the "black screen" MUX switch iGPU to dGPU bug, and can't workaround it and have to load bios defaults--the system just bricks, instead of setting the RAM back to 2T....very annoying). Then I have to do that annoying CMOS clear....

Yet if I have the RAM downclocked to 1866 and then try changing from 1T to 2T...it retrains and doesn't brick...

Tried and still black. Oh dear. Problems just keep stacking up. I hope my gpu wasn’t fried. Haha

Update: Fixed the issue by removing the GPU and letting the system run on the igpu. Once it did boot, I shutdown via start menu and put back the gpu/heatsink in their proper places and it's now working. Ain't gonna touch Afterburner again. I followed this guide: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=265856.0

Has anyone tried to replace the battery on their system? How easy was the removal? Where did you source your battery replacement?

MSI doesn't want to sell me one.

    I'm located in the UK.

You obviously either have a different model or you are confused. Changing the battery isn't as simple as taking just the back cover off. You need to remove one more layer of components to get access to it on a GT72. It's also stuck down with double sided tape and I was wondering how easy it would be to unstick it.

    Have a look here:

You could try MendIT. They have parts available for a lot of gaming laptops.
